You can complete and sign a PDF without buying software. Use the free Acrobat Reader app on Windows or Mac, the free Acrobat app on iPhone, iPad, or Android, or Acrobat’s browser-based Fill & Sign tool. Click or tap interactive fields, place text on documents that have no fields, add a signature by typing, drawing, or inserting an image, then save and check the finished copy. Choose the installed desktop or mobile app when you do not want a sensitive file uploaded; the browser workflow stores uploads in Adobe cloud storage.
Which free PDF method should you use?
All three official Acrobat routes handle the basic job of entering information and adding a signature. The best choice depends on your device, whether you want to install an app, and whether the document can be uploaded to a cloud service.

For a routine, non-sensitive form, any route is suitable. For tax, medical, identity, employment, or confidential business documents, use the desktop or mobile app if possible so you can avoid the browser service’s documented upload step.
What do you need before you start?
You need the PDF file, the information requested by the form, and a way to create your signature. A mouse, trackpad, finger, or stylus is enough; a printer and scanner are not required for an electronic workflow.

- Keep the original PDF unchanged so you can start over if an entry is misplaced.
- Have dates, addresses, identification numbers, and other answers ready before opening the file.
- Check the recipient’s instructions for accepted file type, naming, signature format, and return method.
- Do not assume that a typed, drawn, or image signature has the same legal effect everywhere. Signature requirements vary by document and jurisdiction.
How do you fill and sign a PDF on Windows or Mac?
Acrobat Reader is free desktop software for Windows and Mac and supports opening, filling, signing, and saving forms. It works with both interactive forms and ordinary PDFs that were created without fillable fields.
1. Open the file in Acrobat Reader
- Install and open Acrobat Reader, then choose File > Open and select the PDF. You can also open the file from your operating system and choose Acrobat Reader when prompted.
- Save a working copy with a different filename before entering information. This preserves the blank original.
2. Enter information in interactive fields
Click a highlighted text box, check box, radio button, date field, or other control and type or select the requested value. Use the Tab key to move through fields when the form’s tab order is set up correctly. If a field is too small, reduce the text size using the field’s formatting controls rather than allowing text to overlap nearby labels.
3. Add text to a PDF with no fields
Some PDFs are only page images or fixed layouts. They do not have clickable form controls, but you can still complete them by choosing the fill-and-sign text tool, clicking where an answer belongs, and typing over the page. This places a new text object on top of the PDF; it does not rewrite the document’s original text or redesign its layout.
Use separate text objects for separate answers. Move an object by dragging it, and resize it so it stays inside the intended line or box. Zoom in before placing small entries, then zoom out to check their alignment with the surrounding form.
4. Create and place the signature
Choose the signature tool and select one of the available input methods:
- Type: enter your name and select a displayed handwriting style.
- Draw: use a mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, or stylus to draw the signature.
- Image: insert an image of a handwritten signature that you already have permission to use.
Place the signature in the designated area and adjust its size so it does not cover instructions, dates, or other fields. Add a separate date or initials object if the form requests them; a signature alone does not automatically complete those fields.

5. Save and inspect the completed copy
- Choose File > Save As and give the completed document a clear name, such as
application-completed.pdf. - Close the file and open the saved copy again. Check every page for missing text, clipped characters, misplaced check marks, and a signature that appears at the correct size.
- Send the saved PDF using the recipient’s requested method. Keep a copy until the recipient confirms receipt.
How do you fill and sign a PDF on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device?
The free Acrobat mobile app supports filling and signing on iOS and Android; Adobe states that no subscription is required for these basic features. The exact buttons can move between app versions, but the workflow is the same: open the file, choose the fill-and-sign function, place entries, add a signature, and save or share the result.

1. Open the PDF in the Acrobat app
- Install or open Acrobat, then choose the PDF from device storage, a file provider, an email attachment, or another app’s share menu.
- Make a duplicate first if you need to preserve an untouched original.
2. Fill existing fields
Tap an interactive field and enter the requested value. Acroforms expose fields that were built into the PDF. Fill & Sign forms let you place text, check marks, and other elements from the toolbar even when the original file does not contain conventional form fields.
3. Place text on a simple PDF
If tapping the printed line does nothing, select the text tool from the toolbar, tap the page at the answer location, and type. Drag the text box into position and use the size controls to fit it within the printed area. Repeat for each answer rather than trying to alter the underlying page artwork.
4. Add a signature
Tap the signature icon and choose to type, draw, or insert an image. On a touchscreen, drawing with a finger or stylus is usually easiest; typed and image signatures are alternatives when precision is difficult. Resize and position the result, then add initials or a date separately if requested.

5. Save, export, and verify
Use the app’s save or share command to create the completed PDF in a location you can find again. Reopen that exported copy—not only the in-app preview—and inspect each page before sending it. If a cloud drive or messaging app is used for sharing, verify that the recipient receives the PDF rather than a temporary app link.
How do you use Acrobat Fill & Sign in a browser?
Acrobat online services provide a browser-based Fill & Sign workflow. It is convenient when you cannot install software, but the service uploads the selected file to Adobe cloud storage, so it is not the privacy-first option for sensitive documents.
1. Confirm your browser and operating system
The Acrobat online FAQ lists these supported combinations on the page reviewed: Windows 10 and 11 with Edge, Firefox, or Chrome; macOS 11.7.10 (Big Sur) or later with Safari 15.2 or later, Firefox, or Chrome; Safari on iOS; and Chrome on Android. Browser support can change, so an updated browser is preferable if the page behaves unexpectedly.
2. Open Fill & Sign and upload the PDF
- Open Acrobat online services and choose Fill & Sign.
- Select the PDF from your device. Wait for the upload and processing step to finish before closing the browser tab.
Adobe says most online tools allow one free transaction and one download without signing in. If you sign in, Adobe says you can fill, sign, and comment on PDFs for free. These limits and policies apply to the online service, not to the installed Reader workflow.

3. Add entries and a signature
Click a detected field to type into it. For a non-interactive page, choose the text tool and click where the answer should appear. Use the signature control to type, draw, or insert an image, then place and resize it in the signature area.
4. Download and handle the cloud copy
Choose the download or save command when finished, then open the downloaded PDF to check it. Adobe says that when you do not sign in, it soon deletes uploaded files from its servers; “soon” is not a guarantee that deletion is immediate, so do not upload a file when your organization prohibits cloud processing. Delete the local download and any browser or shared-device copies when your retention policy requires it.
What is the difference between an interactive form and a simple PDF?
An interactive form contains fields designed for data entry. A simple PDF contains fixed text, lines, or a scanned page, so filling it means placing new text and marks over the existing page.
Interactive Acroforms
Acroforms expose controls such as text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons, drop-down lists, and date fields. Selecting a field generally preserves the document’s intended alignment and makes keyboard navigation possible. If a field is locked, read-only, or missing, do not force text into an unrelated box; contact the form issuer for a corrected file.
Fill & Sign forms
Fill & Sign tools allow you to add form elements from a toolbar even when the PDF does not have conventional fields. This is useful for applications, waivers, and printed forms that were converted to PDF without interactive controls.
Scanned or fixed-layout PDFs
A scan may be a single image. The free fill-and-sign workflow can overlay text, check marks, and signatures, but it does not turn the scan into a fully editable form. If the issuer requires changes to the form’s field structure—such as adding, changing, or removing fields—Adobe documents that capability as a desktop Acrobat function rather than a mobile feature.
Can you change the original wording in a PDF for free?
Basic free Reader and mobile fill-and-sign features are designed to add entries on top of a page, not to rewrite arbitrary existing paragraphs, replace logos, or reflow the document. If a printed name or instruction is wrong, ask the sender for a corrected PDF instead of covering it with a white box and replacement text. Structural field editing is a different task from completing a form and is not supported in the mobile workflow described here.

How should you choose between desktop, mobile, and browser filling?

- No installation permitted: use online Fill & Sign if the file may be uploaded under your organization’s policy.
- Working on a phone or tablet: use Acrobat mobile for both interactive and simple PDFs.
- Need to redesign fields: a completed-form workflow is insufficient; Adobe identifies desktop Acrobat, not mobile, for editing the form structure.
- Need only a basic signature: all three Acrobat routes support typed, drawn, or image signatures.
What should you do if the form will not accept your typing?
The page has no clickable fields
Switch to the text tool and place an entry manually. A lack of field highlighting does not necessarily mean the PDF cannot be completed; it may simply be a fixed layout.
The text is misaligned or clipped
Zoom in, move the text object, and reduce its size. Check the result at normal page size as well, because an entry that looks correct at high zoom can still overlap a border or label.
The signature covers other information
Drag it to the printed signature line and resize it before saving. If the form has separate date and initials lines, create separate objects rather than squeezing everything into one signature mark.
The mobile app lacks a field-editing command
That is expected for mobile: Adobe’s mobile documentation distinguishes filling forms from editing their underlying structure. Complete the existing fields on mobile, or use desktop Acrobat when the form itself must be changed.
The browser upload or download fails
Check the supported browser and operating-system combinations, disable extensions that block uploads, and try a current supported browser. If the file is confidential or the browser route remains unreliable, switch to the installed desktop or mobile app and keep the document local.
Are built-in device tools an alternative?
Some platform guides and secondary how-to pages mention Preview on Mac, Files/Markup on iOS, and Google Drive on Android as possible ways to annotate or sign PDFs. Their buttons, export behavior, and support for interactive fields vary by operating-system release, and the primary platform documentation for those alternatives was not established here. Treat them as options to verify on your particular device rather than assuming they provide the same form compatibility as Acrobat.
How do you protect a completed PDF?
Use the least exposed workflow that meets the task. Local desktop and mobile apps avoid the browser service’s upload, while online Fill & Sign sends the selected file to Adobe cloud storage. On a shared computer or phone, sign out of the device account if appropriate, remove temporary downloads, and avoid leaving the completed PDF in an unsecured downloads folder.
- Keep the blank original and the completed copy clearly separated.
- Open the final PDF after saving to confirm that the signature and all entries render correctly.
- Send only the requested pages and format; do not attach drafts or unrelated identity documents.
- Follow the recipient’s retention, encryption, and naming requirements.
- Ask the recipient whether an electronic signature is acceptable before relying on a typed or drawn mark.
What are the practical limits of free fill-and-sign workflows?
Free tools are enough for entering information, checking boxes, and adding a signature, but they do not make every PDF editable. The main limits are the difference between overlaying content and changing original text, the mobile restriction on editing field structure, and the browser service’s upload and free-transaction rules. A form issuer may also require a particular signature method or a digitally certified signature; product support for placing a signature does not establish that a recipient or jurisdiction will accept it.

Can I fill out a PDF without printing it?
Yes. Acrobat Reader, Acrobat mobile, and Acrobat online Fill & Sign let you enter text, select controls, and place a signature electronically. You can save and send the resulting PDF without scanning a paper copy.
Does a typed signature count as a legal signature?
That depends on the document, recipient, and jurisdiction. A typed, drawn, or image signature is a product feature, not a universal legal determination, so follow the signing instructions supplied by the organization requesting the form.
Can I edit a PDF’s existing paragraphs with the free Reader app?
The fill-and-sign workflow adds text and marks over the page; it is not a general-purpose rewrite tool for arbitrary existing content. If the original wording or field layout is wrong, request a corrected document or use a desktop tool that specifically supports structural editing.
What happens to a PDF uploaded to Acrobat online without signing in?
Adobe says online files are uploaded to its cloud storage and that unauthenticated files are soon deleted from its servers. Because deletion is described as occurring soon rather than at a guaranteed instant, avoid the online route when your policy forbids cloud uploads.
Do I need a stylus, printer, or scanner to sign electronically?
