No single detector can prove that an image or video is AI-generated—or prove that it is authentic. The dependable approach is layered: preserve the highest-quality original, inspect signed Content Credentials and provider watermarks, run a checker that covers the suspected generator, reverse-search the image or key video frames, examine surviving metadata, look for visual and audio inconsistencies, and corroborate the event with independent sources. Each layer answers a different question. A valid provenance record can describe how a file was created or edited, while reverse search and reporting can test whether its caption and context are true.
What is the most reliable way to check whether an image or video is AI-generated?
Use the checks in sequence rather than trusting a single “AI detector.” Start with the original file, because screenshots, social-media recompression, cropping and format conversion can remove evidence. Then inspect provenance, test for provider-specific signals, search for earlier copies, review metadata, examine the media for inconsistencies, and verify the claimed event independently.

- File history: How was this particular file created, edited and exported?
- Claim and context: Did the depicted event happen as described, in the stated place and at the stated time?
A file can have a genuine creation history and still carry a false caption. Conversely, an authentic photograph may lose all provenance data during reposting. Your conclusion should therefore describe the evidence you actually found, not label the media “real” or “fake” on the basis of one test.

How should I preserve an image or video before checking it?
Preserve the best available copy before opening it in an editor, downloading a social-media preview or taking a screenshot. Every transformation can remove the very signals you need to inspect.
- Request the original export. Ask the sender for the camera file or the file exported directly by the creation tool, not a screenshot, screen recording or messaging-app preview. Keep the original filename and extension.
- Make a working copy. Store the untouched file as read-only and perform metadata inspection, frame extraction and image enhancement on duplicates. Record when and where you obtained it.
- Capture the surrounding post. Save the URL, account name, caption, upload date and visible replies. A later caption change can be as important as a pixel-level clue.
- Hash the file for a case record. A cryptographic hash such as SHA-256 lets others confirm that the file you examined has not changed. A hash does not establish authenticity; it preserves chain of custody.
- Do not “clean up” first. Sharpening, denoising, re-encoding or cropping can create artifacts that look like generation errors and can destroy embedded credentials.
OpenAI warns that Content Credentials can be lost through everyday actions such as taking a screenshot or converting a file. A missing credential after reposting therefore tells you little about who created the underlying media.
What are Content Credentials and C2PA provenance?
Content Credentials are signed, tamper-evident records associated with a file. Under the C2PA standard, a credential can record an origin, creator assertion and sequence of edits. A viewer can display that history and indicate whether the signature still validates.
What a valid credential can establish
- The file carries a cryptographically signed history from a participating camera, application or service.
- The record may identify the tool that created or edited the asset and list subsequent actions.
- A valid signature supports a claim about that file’s recorded provenance, assuming the signing organization and account are trustworthy.
What a credential cannot establish
- It does not prove that the scene depicted actually happened.
- It does not prove that the person who made the file legally owned every input or had permission to publish it.
- It does not guarantee that the caption, date, location or surrounding narrative is correct.
- It cannot describe transformations that occurred after the credential was stripped or the file was replaced.
The U.S. Office of Research Integrity describes a C2PA Viewer as a way to display origin, creator and edit history. Use a viewer on the untouched file and save a copy of the result. If no credential appears, treat that as “no credential found,” not as evidence of human creation; the Office of Research Integrity specifically notes that the absence of an indicator does not prove authenticity.
How do provider-specific AI checks work?
Provider checks look for signals that only a particular ecosystem can create, such as a signed C2PA assertion or an embedded watermark. They are useful when you have a reason to suspect that provider, but they are not universal detectors.
| Check | Signal it can inspect | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Verify | Supported OpenAI C2PA and SynthID signals | Testing files suspected to have been created or edited with supported OpenAI systems | A negative result does not exclude another generator, an unsupported format or a signal removed by editing |
| Google Gemini verification | Google SynthID and Content Credentials | Checking supported images and videos for Google-origin signals and a credentials summary | Availability and quotas change; the check is scoped to supported signals rather than all AI systems |
| General C2PA viewer | Signed provenance manifests from participating tools | Reading origin and edit history independent of a single provider | Only files that still contain a valid manifest can return a history |
Google’s Gemini help documentation describes an approximate rolling allowance of 10 image checks and 10 video checks, with video totaling up to five minutes, per 24 hours. Quotas and regional availability can change, so treat that figure as a current approximation rather than a guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
Record the exact wording returned by a checker. “A supported OpenAI signal was detected” is precise. “No supported signal was found” is also precise. Do not convert either result into “proven real” or “proven fake.” OpenAI’s API guidance says to treat not_detected as an absence of detected evidence, not proof that content was human-created or was not generated with OpenAI.

How can reverse image search reveal where a file came from?
Reverse search tests publication history rather than pixels alone. It can locate an earlier upload, a higher-resolution original, a stock photograph that was given a false caption, or reporting that explains a cropped frame.
For still images
- Search the complete image first, preserving its composition.
- Search a crop containing the distinctive face, object, sign or landmark if the full-image search returns noise.
- Try a second crop that excludes overlaid text or logos; text can dominate matching.
- Compare dates and captions on the earliest credible results. An older copy does not automatically prove the image is authentic, but it can disprove a claimed date or location.
- Open the original publication rather than relying on a thumbnail. Check whether the image was labeled illustrative, digitally altered or generated.
Google recommends Lens and related search features for origin investigations. Search results are leads, not verdicts: scraped pages can repeat one another, and search engines may not index private or newly posted material.
For videos
Video search works best when you reduce the clip to distinctive evidence. Extract several frames at the beginning, middle and end, then search each frame separately. Also search an unusual spoken phrase, a visible sign, a landmark and any on-screen caption. If all search paths point to the same earlier upload, compare the audio and frame sequence to determine whether the circulating clip is an edited excerpt.

Which metadata fields are worth examining?
Metadata is supporting evidence, not a certificate. When it survives, it can reveal whether a file’s technical history fits the claimed capture conditions.
- EXIF date and time: Compare the capture time with the alleged event. Check the time zone and whether the camera clock could have been wrong.
- Device and lens fields: A camera model, focal length and orientation can be compared with visible perspective, but fields are editable and may be removed by export.
- Software and processing fields: An editor, mobile app or generative tool named in the file can explain an alteration. It does not by itself prove deception; ordinary photographs are routinely edited.
- Codec and container details: Video codec, frame rate, keyframe pattern and export software can reveal a re-encoded copy or a frame interpolation workflow.
- Dimensions and color profile: Unusual dimensions or a mismatch between the claimed camera and the file’s export profile can prompt further questions.
Compare the technical record with the story. A file claiming to be a direct camera original but showing only an editing export deserves scrutiny. Missing EXIF is common after social-media uploads and messaging, so absence is not proof of fabrication.
What visual clues suggest AI generation?
Visual inspection is useful for triage. It tells you where to investigate next, not what the final verdict must be.
Common image clues
- Garbled or inconsistent lettering on signs, labels and screens.
- Malformed hands, teeth, jewelry, eyeglass arms or other repeated small structures.
- Textures that repeat unnaturally across hair, fabric, foliage, brick or skin.
- Shadows pointing in incompatible directions or having softness inconsistent with the light source.
- Reflections that omit objects, show the wrong geometry or contain a different face.
- Edges around hair, ears, fingers and objects that warp into the background.
- Uneven resolution or noise patterns between the subject and its surroundings.
Common video and audio clues
- Lip movements that lag behind or lead the spoken words.
- Teeth, earrings, hairlines or facial edges that change shape between frames.
- Backgrounds that ripple, melt or jump while the foreground remains stable.
- Lighting, reflections or shadows that change without a corresponding movement of the light source.
- Audio room tone, reverberation or microphone quality that changes abruptly between words.
- Unnatural pauses, clipped consonants or a voice that lacks expected breath and distance cues.
Compression, low light, motion blur and ordinary video stabilization can create similar defects. Use a frame-by-frame view and compare suspicious regions with adjacent frames before treating an artifact as meaningful.

How do I verify the event and caption, not just the file?
Context verification is the step that provenance systems cannot replace. Test the claim against sources that did not copy the original post.
- Identify the claimed time and place. Write down the date, location, people, organization and event described in the caption.
- Check independent reporting. Look for contemporaneous coverage from multiple outlets with their own photographs, video or named witnesses.
- Compare environmental details. Weather records, shadows, maps, street layouts, construction status and event schedules can confirm or contradict the scene.
- Find first-hand context. Contact the original photographer, venue, emergency service or eyewitness when appropriate. Ask for the unedited file and capture circumstances.
- Track caption changes. Save earlier versions of the post if available. A real file can be paired with a misleading date, location or description.
- Assess the publisher. Check whether the account has a consistent history, transparent identity and corrections policy. Account credibility changes the weight of the claim but never substitutes for evidence.
NIST’s 20 November 2024 overview treats provenance, watermarking, detection, labeling, testing and auditing as related but distinct approaches. Microsoft Research’s 19 February 2026 review likewise presents provenance, watermarking and fingerprinting as complementary methods. In practice, independent context is the complement that tests what the media purports to show.
How should I fact-check a suspicious video from start to finish?
Use this repeatable workflow when a clip may influence a news report, investigation or personal safety decision.
- Acquire the highest-quality file. Download the original post if permitted and request the sender’s export. Preserve the URL and timestamp.
- Separate the streams. Save the video, extract audio and export representative frames without overwriting the original.
- Inspect provenance. Open any C2PA manifest and run provider checks that match the suspected ecosystem. Record whether a signal was detected, not detected or unavailable.
- Search frames and phrases. Reverse-search distinctive frames and search exact captions, landmarks and spoken phrases in quotation marks. Note the earliest credible appearance.
- Inspect technical details. Review container, codec, frame rate, export software and surviving creation dates. Look for abrupt changes that indicate splicing or multiple generations of encoding.
- Review motion and sound. Step through faces, hands, text, reflections and background edges. Listen for lip-sync, room-tone and continuity changes.
- Test the real-world claim. Check maps, weather, schedules, official statements and independent witnesses for the stated place and date.
- Document uncertainty. Separate confirmed observations from inferences, preserve copies of search results and have another reviewer repeat the key checks.
How should I compare verification methods?
| Method | Coverage | Evidence type | Survives cropping or compression? | Provides event context? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C2PA Content Credentials | Participating cameras and applications | Signed origin and edit history | Often lost when the file is transformed; validity depends on the intact manifest | No |
| Provider watermark check | One provider’s supported watermark, such as SynthID | Embedded or detectable provider signal | Depends on the watermark design and the amount of editing | No |
| Visual or audio detector | Potentially many generators, depending on the model and training | Statistical or artifact inference | Performance can change with resizing, compression, noise and new generators | No |
| Reverse search | Indexed copies and publications | Publication history and similarity | Can work on crops or frames, but fails for new or private media | Sometimes; results must be evaluated |
| Metadata inspection | Whatever fields remain in the file | Technical capture and export details | Frequently stripped by platforms and editors | No |
| Independent corroboration | Sources, records and witnesses outside the file | Event, date and location evidence | Unaffected by the media file’s encoding | Yes |
The strongest assessment combines methods that fail in different ways. A provider watermark and a C2PA record can support a file-history conclusion; neither can establish that a staged scene or false caption is true. Reverse search and independent reporting address that separate question.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What wording is safe when reporting the result?
Describe observations and scope instead of assigning an absolute label. Suitable formulations include:
- “A valid C2PA history records creation in [tool] and an edit in [tool]; the credential does not verify the event described by the caption.”
- “A supported provider signal was detected.”
- “No supported signal was found in this copy; the file may have lost metadata or may have come from another generator.”
- “Reverse search found an earlier publication with a different date and location.”
- “Frame-by-frame review shows repeated background warping and lip-sync discrepancies; independent confirmation is still required.”
Avoid “proven real,” “proven fake,” and “the detector says.” OpenAI’s guidance states that provenance signals do not guarantee accuracy, lack of editing, legal ownership or correct context. In high-stakes work, pair automated results with documented human review, preserve the original evidence and record who made the final judgment.
What are the most common mistakes, and how can I recover?
Checking a screenshot instead of the source file
Problem: A screenshot may remove credentials, alter dimensions and introduce display artifacts.
Recovery: Request the original export, then compare it with the screenshot. If the original is unavailable, report that the analysis is limited to a transformed copy.

Treating a negative detector result as authentication
Problem: Provider tools only recognize supported signals, and signals can disappear after editing.
Recovery: Write “no supported signal detected” and continue with search, metadata, artifact review and corroboration.
Assuming metadata is immutable
Problem: EXIF and software fields can be edited or stripped during export.
Recovery: Use metadata to generate questions, then seek independent evidence and the original camera or application file.
Using visual artifacts as a verdict
Problem: Blur, compression and stabilization can mimic AI defects.
Recovery: Check adjacent frames, compare multiple regions and obtain a second reviewer’s assessment.
Stopping after finding an earlier copy
Problem: An older upload may still be synthetic or staged.
Recovery: Verify who made it, when and where, and whether reliable witnesses or records support the event.
Letting the caption drive the investigation
Problem: You may search only for confirming evidence.
Recovery: Write the claim as separate testable statements—identity, date, place and action—and seek disconfirming evidence for each.
What should an evidence log contain?
A short log makes your conclusion reproducible and protects against accidental overstatement. Include:
- Original filename, file size, hash and acquisition time.
- Source URL, account, caption and any visible edits or repost markers.
- Credential and provider-check results, including the exact status text.
- Metadata fields inspected and fields that were absent.
- Reverse-search queries, earliest credible matches and date discrepancies.
- Specific frames, regions or audio timestamps that contain suspected inconsistencies.
- Independent sources consulted and what each source confirms or contradicts.
- The final confidence level, unresolved questions and reviewer names.
For consequential decisions, retain the original and the working copies separately. A later reviewer should be able to reproduce the checks without relying on your memory or a disappearing social-media post.

How have official guidance documents framed synthetic-media verification?
The guidance has converged on layered verification rather than a universal detector. Singapore’s Government published “Tips to Spot Real and Digitally-Altered Content” on 17 October 2024, emphasizing observable inconsistencies and corroboration. The Australian Cyber Security Centre published and reviewed “Content Credentials: Strengthening multimedia integrity in the generative AI era” on 30 January 2025, explaining how provenance helps while warning that it is not a truth guarantee. NIST’s 20 November 2024 overview separates provenance, watermarking, detection, labeling, testing and auditing, and Microsoft Research’s 19 February 2026 review describes provenance, watermarking and fingerprinting as complementary. These distinctions matter because no method covers every provider, file transformation or real-world claim.
What is the practical decision rule?
Escalate the investigation when the stakes are high or the signals conflict. A low-stakes personal post may justify recording the uncertainty and declining to share it. A clip that could affect public safety, an election, a court case, employment or someone’s reputation warrants preservation of the original, independent corroboration and a second human review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot prove that an image is AI-generated?
No. A screenshot can remove Content Credentials, alter the pixel structure and introduce display or compression artifacts. Use it only as a lead, and state explicitly that conclusions are limited when the original export cannot be obtained.
Does Google Lens prove that a photograph is authentic?
Lens can locate earlier copies, related pages and visually similar material, but search results do not authenticate the scene. An earlier publication with a consistent date and named photographer is useful context; it still needs corroboration from independent records or witnesses.
What should I do if an AI checker says “not detected”?
Record the exact status and the file tested, then continue with provenance, reverse search, metadata and context checks. The result means only that the tool found no supported signal in that copy; it does not establish human creation or rule out another generator.
How many video frames should I reverse-search?
There is no universal quota for search engines. Choose several distinctive frames from different moments, plus crops of signs, faces or landmarks, and search unusual spoken phrases separately. This samples the clip’s timeline instead of relying on one potentially duplicated frame.
When is human review mandatory?
Use documented human review whenever a conclusion could affect safety, legal rights, employment, financial decisions or public trust. Automated checks are narrow and can fail after ordinary editing, so a second reviewer should inspect the preserved evidence and the independent corroboration.
