The safest alternative to Cloudflare Tunnel depends on who must reach the service. If access is limited to you, your household, or a known team, keep the application private and require a VPN or private mesh connection. If anonymous or general Internet users must connect without joining your network, put a reverse proxy in front of the application, publish a hostname, and terminate HTTPS at the proxy. A VPS can provide that public proxy when the application remains at home, but it adds another host and tunnel to maintain. Directly forwarding the application port is an option you may encounter, yet it is not the default secure design.

This guide explains the architectures, prerequisites, deployment sequence, authentication requirements, and failure checks so you can choose a pattern that matches your users and your ability to operate it.

What does it mean to expose a self-hosted service securely?

Exposure means making an application reachable from outside the network where it runs. Security is not one setting; it is the combination of an access boundary, encrypted transport, application authentication, authorization, patching, and monitoring. A VPN can make a private service reachable without publishing it to everyone. A reverse proxy can publish a website or API while keeping the application behind a separate front end.

Start by deciding whether the service is private or public:

  • Private service: only identified people or devices need access. A VPN or private mesh network is usually the smaller attack surface.
  • Public service: users cannot be required to join your private network. Use a reverse proxy with a public hostname and HTTPS, then enforce authentication and authorization in the application or at an additional access layer.

Home Assistant documents VPN and SSH-tunnel approaches for remote access, while its VPN example requires the client to connect to the VPN before using the service. See Home Assistant’s security guidance and its remote-access documentation.

Which architecture should you choose?

Use the access requirement, not the software brand, as the deciding factor. The following patterns cover most self-hosted deployments.

Pattern Best fit What the user must do Main operational responsibility
VPN or private mesh network Owner, household, small team, or another known group Join the VPN or private network before opening the service Manage device enrollment, revocation, VPN updates, and application security
Public reverse proxy Website, API, or service for people who cannot join a private network Open a normal public hostname; no VPN enrollment is required Operate DNS, ports, certificates, proxy rules, authentication, and rate controls
VPS reverse proxy to a home service Home-hosted application that needs a public endpoint or cannot accept direct inbound traffic Connect the VPS securely to the home network and proxy requests over that connection Maintain the VPS, tunnel, proxy, home host, monitoring, and two sets of firewall rules
Direct port forwarding Only as a considered, application-specific choice Reach the application directly on a forwarded router port Secure the application itself against Internet traffic and provide TLS, updates, and abuse controls

Jellyfin lists direct forwarding, reverse proxies, VPN access, and a VPS that proxies to a home network as possible designs, but explicitly marks direct port forwarding as not recommended. Its networking documentation is a useful example of the trade-offs, not a universal ranking for every application.

Compare each design on six questions:

  • Who needs access, and can those people or devices join a private network?
  • Should the endpoint be discoverable and reachable by the general Internet?
  • Where will identity, authorization, and brute-force protection be enforced?
  • Can your DNS and router deliver the required traffic to the proxy?
  • Who obtains, renews, and monitors TLS certificates?
  • Can you patch and monitor every host, proxy, tunnel, and application involved?

When is a VPN or private mesh network the right answer?

Choose a private access method when the service is for a limited, known audience. The application can remain on a private address; an enrolled device reaches it through the VPN, and strangers never receive a public application endpoint.

What the user experience looks like

  1. Install or enable the VPN client on each approved phone, laptop, or workstation.
  2. Enroll the device or user and record how you will revoke access when a device is lost or a person leaves the group.
  3. Connect the VPN before opening the service’s private hostname or address.
  4. Keep the application’s own login, MFA, and authorization enabled; VPN membership is an additional network gate, not a replacement for identity inside the application.

Home Assistant describes this order explicitly: the remote client first establishes the VPN connection and then uses the private service. Its securing guide also calls for unique passwords, multifactor authentication, and regular updates. Follow the product’s current instructions at securing Home Assistant and remote access to Home Assistant.

Advantages and limits

  • Advantages: no public application port, a clear list of enrolled devices, and a natural fit for administration tools, dashboards, storage, and household services.
  • Limits: every user must install and operate a client, access must be provisioned and revoked, and a VPN outage affects all remote users.
  • Important boundary: a VPN does not repair a vulnerable application. Keep patches, strong credentials, MFA where available, and least-privilege accounts in place.

An SSH tunnel is another private pattern for an individual administrator. It can be useful for occasional maintenance, but it is less convenient for a household or a public audience because each client needs a tunnel setup and an account that can create it.

How do you publish a service with a reverse proxy and HTTPS?

A public reverse proxy receives Internet requests, handles TLS, applies access controls, and forwards only the intended traffic to the application. The application can listen on a private address while the proxy owns the public hostname.

Prerequisites

  • A domain or subdomain you control.
  • DNS that resolves the public hostname to the machine running the proxy, or to the VPS that will run it.
  • Network routing that delivers the required web traffic to the proxy. The Caddy quick-start documents ports 80 and 443 for its standard public setup.
  • An application that has a stable private address and a known listening port.
  • A plan for authentication, authorization, logging, updates, certificate renewal, and abuse controls.

Caddy’s reverse-proxy quick-start explains that a public hostname, correct DNS, and ports 80 and 443 reaching Caddy allow it to obtain a publicly trusted certificate. For a production self-hosted Supabase deployment, the project’s reverse-proxy and HTTPS guide requires HTTPS and documents Caddy or Nginx with Let’s Encrypt. That requirement is specific to that application; do not generalize it to every self-hosted service without checking its documentation.

Deployment sequence

  1. Inventory the application. Record its private IP or hostname, listening port, login method, callback URLs, WebSocket needs, file-upload limits, and whether it supports forwarded headers. Do not expose unrelated administrative interfaces.
  2. Create the public DNS record. Point the chosen hostname to the public IP of the proxy host. Check both the record and the address returned from an external network; an internal DNS override can hide a mistake.
  3. Route only the proxy traffic. On a home router, forward the web ports required by the proxy to the proxy host, not to every application server. On a VPS, allow the proxy’s public listener and keep the backend reachable only through the private connection.
  4. Define one proxy route per service. The route should accept the intended hostname and forward to the application’s private address. Keep a default-deny posture for unknown hostnames and unused paths.
  5. Enable TLS and verify renewal. Let the proxy obtain a publicly trusted certificate, then test both initial issuance and renewal. Do not treat a certificate that works once as proof that renewal will work later.
  6. Configure the application for a proxy. Set its trusted-proxy or forwarded-header option only to the proxy’s address or network. This lets the application identify the original client safely without trusting arbitrary Internet-supplied headers.
  7. Add access controls. Require the application’s login and MFA where available. If the service is not meant for everyone, add an authentication gateway or IP/device allowlist at the proxy layer.
  8. Test from outside your home network. Use a cellular connection or another independent network. Check the certificate name, redirects, login, API calls, WebSockets, uploads, logs, and blocked paths.

Home Assistant’s trusted-proxy requirement

When Home Assistant is placed behind a reverse proxy, its remote-access documentation says the proxy must be configured as trusted; otherwise requests are blocked by design. Set that trust narrowly to the actual proxy and preserve Home Assistant’s own authentication. Do not mark an entire untrusted network as a proxy simply to make an error disappear.

When does a VPS reverse proxy to a home network make sense?

A VPS can supply the public IP, DNS endpoint, TLS termination, and reverse proxy while the application stays on a home server. Jellyfin lists this as one networking pattern. It is useful when the home network cannot conveniently accept inbound connections or when you want to separate the public edge from the residential network.

How the traffic path works

  1. The user’s browser or client connects to the VPS hostname over HTTPS.
  2. The proxy on the VPS authenticates or filters the request and sends only the selected route through an encrypted connection to the home network.
  3. The home-side endpoint forwards the request to the private application.
  4. Responses return through the same path; the application is never given a direct public listener.

What you must operate

  • The VPS operating system, firewall, accounts, patches, backups, and monitoring.
  • The public proxy configuration and certificate renewal.
  • The encrypted VPS-to-home tunnel, including keys, rotation, reconnect behavior, and logging.
  • Home router and server firewall rules that permit only the tunnel path and required backend traffic.
  • Application authentication and updates at home.

The VPS is not a magic security boundary. It adds a second Internet-facing machine and a second failure domain. Choose it when that separation solves a real routing or availability problem, not merely because it sounds more advanced. The cited Jellyfin documentation does not establish universal performance, price, or security superiority for this design.

Why is direct port forwarding usually a poor default?

Direct forwarding sends Internet traffic straight to the application. Jellyfin explicitly labels direct port forwarding as not recommended. The practical concern is concentration of responsibility: the application must provide safe TLS, robust authentication, request filtering, logging, rate limiting, and resistance to malformed or abusive traffic without a separate edge layer.

If you still evaluate it for a particular application, verify all of the following in that application’s documentation:

  • It supports HTTPS with a certificate that can be renewed reliably.
  • It has current authentication, MFA where available, account lockout or throttling, and secure session handling.
  • It binds only to the intended interface and does not expose an administrator port or database.
  • It records failed logins and unusual requests, and you have a process to review those logs.
  • You can patch it quickly and restore it from a tested backup.

For a web service, a reverse proxy normally provides a cleaner place for TLS and request policy. For a private service, a VPN normally avoids public exposure altogether.

How should authentication and hardening be layered?

Use several independent controls so that a mistake in one layer does not publish the whole service.

Application layer

  • Use a unique, long password for every account and remove defaults.
  • Enable MFA when the application supports it.
  • Create separate administrator and everyday accounts.
  • Disable registration, guest access, debug mode, and unused integrations unless you need them.
  • Apply updates and review security advisories for the application and its dependencies.

Proxy and network layer

  • Allow only the hostnames and paths you intend to publish.
  • Use authentication at the proxy for services that should not be openly reachable.
  • Use IP allowlists only when the allowed addresses are stable; an allowlist is not a substitute for user identity.
  • Apply rate limiting and brute-force prevention at the proxy or network layer. Open WebUI’s hardening guidance recommends network-layer controls and identifies VPN, a zero-trust access proxy, or an authenticated reverse proxy with IP restrictions as possible approaches.
  • Keep databases, SSH, dashboards, router administration, and internal APIs off the public route.

Transport and secrets

  • Use HTTPS for every public web session, including login and API traffic.
  • Store proxy keys, VPN keys, and application secrets with restricted permissions; do not paste them into public repositories or chat logs.
  • Separate certificate-management permissions from application data where practical.

What should you test before declaring the service secure?

  1. Confirm the public DNS record resolves to the intended proxy or VPS, not an old address.
  2. Open the HTTPS URL and verify the certificate covers the exact hostname and is not expired.
  3. Try HTTP and confirm it follows the policy you chose, normally redirecting to HTTPS or being rejected.
  4. Sign in with a normal account, then verify that administrator functions are unavailable to it.
  5. Check that an unauthenticated request cannot read data, invoke an API, or reach a management path.
  6. Test mobile access, uploads, long-running requests, WebSockets, and API clients if the service uses them.
  7. Inspect proxy and application logs for the real client address, failed logins, unexpected paths, and rate-limit events.
  8. Temporarily stop the backend and confirm the proxy returns a controlled error without revealing internal addresses or stack traces.
  9. Verify certificate renewal, VPN reconnect behavior, backup restoration, and account revocation using a written procedure.

How do you troubleshoot common failures?

Symptom Likely cause Useful check
Certificate issuance fails DNS points elsewhere, the proxy is not reachable, or the required public ports are blocked Verify the public DNS answer and that ports 80 and 443 reach the proxy host, as required by the documented Caddy setup
Proxy returns a gateway or upstream error Wrong private address or port, backend stopped, or firewall blocks the proxy Test the backend from the proxy host and inspect both proxy and application logs
Application rejects every request behind the proxy Trusted-proxy or forwarded-header settings are missing or too broad Configure trust for the actual proxy address only; Home Assistant documents this requirement explicitly
VPN connects but the service is unreachable The client has not received a route, the service listens on the wrong interface, or a host firewall blocks the VPN subnet Check the VPN-assigned address, route table, listening socket, and firewall rule separately
Users can reach a private administrator page A broad proxy rule exposes more paths than intended Remove the route, restrict hostnames and paths, and keep administrative services on the private network
Login attacks continue despite HTTPS TLS encrypts traffic but does not enforce identity or throttling Keep application authentication and add proxy or network-layer rate limiting and brute-force controls

What does each option cost and what maintenance does it add?

The software patterns themselves can be self-managed, but none is maintenance-free. A private VPN requires time for enrollment, key rotation, client support, and updates. A public reverse proxy requires a domain, a reachable host, DNS administration, certificate renewal, firewall rules, logging, and abuse response. A VPS adds a recurring hosting bill and a second operating system to patch, plus the home-to-VPS tunnel. A direct port forward may avoid a separate proxy host, but it places more security and operational work on the application.

There is no universal price or availability result for these designs. Budget for the resources you actually choose: domain registration, hosting, backup storage, monitoring, and staff or personal time. Recheck vendor documentation before deployment because product-specific setup details and hosted-service availability change.

Which design fits common real-world cases?

Only you need a home dashboard

Use a VPN or private mesh network. Keep the dashboard private, require the client connection first, and retain the dashboard’s own login and MFA. A public reverse proxy adds exposure without solving a user-access problem.

A small remote team needs an internal tool

Start with a private network if every member can enroll an approved device. If enrollment is impractical, publish only the tool through an authenticated HTTPS reverse proxy and keep administration, databases, and monitoring private.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A public website or API must serve unknown users

Use a public reverse proxy with HTTPS, application authentication where appropriate, strict routing, rate limiting, and continuous patching. A VPN is unsuitable when ordinary users cannot be required to install a client.

The application is at home but the public endpoint should be elsewhere

Use a VPS reverse proxy and an encrypted connection back home. Document the additional failure points and ensure the home firewall accepts only the tunnel traffic needed for the selected service.

How do you choose without overexposing the network?

Choose the least-public pattern that satisfies the users. Private users generally need a VPN, while public users generally need a reverse proxy with HTTPS. Add a VPS only when separating the public edge from the home network solves a concrete routing or operational constraint. Whichever path you choose, preserve application authentication, MFA, updates, and access controls; a tunnel or certificate is a transport and routing mechanism, not a complete security program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make Home Assistant reachable remotely without opening its application port?

Yes. A VPN or SSH tunnel can keep Home Assistant on a private address, with the remote device connecting to the private network first. If you place it behind a reverse proxy instead, configure Home Assistant to trust that specific proxy or it will reject forwarded requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if some users cannot install a VPN client?

Publish only the required service through an HTTPS reverse proxy and add an authentication layer that those users can use in a browser or standard client. Keep administrator interfaces and unrelated internal services private rather than broadening the proxy route.

Does HTTPS remove the need for multifactor authentication?

No. HTTPS protects data in transit and proves the proxy’s hostname, but it does not decide which account may use the service or stop password attacks. Retain application authentication and MFA, then add rate limiting or brute-force controls at the proxy or network layer.

Can a VPS forward traffic to a server in my home?

Yes. The VPS can terminate HTTPS and forward selected requests through an encrypted connection to the home server. This design requires patching and monitoring the VPS, proxy, tunnel, home host, and both sets of firewall rules, so it is worthwhile mainly when the separate public endpoint solves a real connectivity or isolation problem.
