To export your ChatGPT history, sign in and open Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export, then select Confirm export. OpenAI sends a download notice by email or SMS; its guidance says exports can take up to seven days to arrive. Download the ZIP while signed in to the same account, check that the conversations and files you need are present, and keep the original ZIP plus a second copy on separate local storage. You can also submit the request through the OpenAI Privacy Portal. The steps differ for personal accounts and managed workspaces, and an export is a data archive—not a complete migration to another ChatGPT account.
What is the quickest way to export ChatGPT data?

OpenAI then prepares an archive of your account data. When the notice arrives, use the download button while signed in to the same account that made the request. Keep the ZIP unchanged as your original record, verify its contents, and make a second protected copy.
Which ChatGPT accounts are eligible for a self-service export?
Self-service export is available to signed-in users on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, and to eligible ChatGPT Edu users. Edu availability can depend on administrator configuration and, in some cases, data-residency settings.

Self-service export is not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. If you use one of those workspaces, ask the workspace owner or administrator about the organization’s data-access process rather than expecting the personal-account button to appear.

How do I export ChatGPT data from the web?
Use the exact labels below so you do not confuse an export request with deletion or model-improvement controls.
- Sign in to the account you want to preserve. If you use more than one login, check the account identity before starting.
- Open the profile menu. Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls. This area contains the export command along with other privacy settings.
- Choose Export under Export data. This submits a request for an archive rather than downloading an instant file.
- Select Confirm export. The request is now queued for preparation.
Do not close the account or assume the request has failed simply because a file does not appear immediately. OpenAI says the preparation period can last up to seven days, and the notice may arrive by email or SMS.
How do I export from the ChatGPT iPhone or Android app?
In the mobile app, open your account settings and select Data controls > Export data, then confirm the request. The app may offer Open ChatGPT on web instead. If it does, use the web procedure while signed in to the same account.
Mobile and web requests lead to the same type of account archive. Starting a request on a phone does not change which account receives the export; the account currently signed in is the one tied to the request.
What should I do if the Export option is missing?
First identify whether you are in a personal account or a managed workspace. Business, Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces do not provide the personal self-service export control, so the workspace owner must handle the request. Edu accounts can also have administrator or residency restrictions.

- Open the OpenAI Privacy Portal.
- Choose Make a Privacy Request.
- Select I have a consumer ChatGPT account.
- Choose Download my data.
- Follow the identity and request prompts.
Keep the account details consistent across the portal request and the eventual download. The archive is associated with the account that made the request, not with whichever account happens to be open in another browser tab.
How long does a ChatGPT export take, and how long is the download available?
OpenAI’s current Help Center guidance states: “Exports can take up to 7 days to arrive.” The notification can be delivered by email or SMS. This is a maximum stated preparation window, not a promise that every request will take exactly seven days.
After the notice arrives, select Download data export while signed in to the same account that requested it. OpenAI says the download link expires 24 hours after receipt. Treat the notice as time-sensitive: download it promptly, then copy the ZIP to your own storage rather than relying on the message as a permanent backup.
How do I download and verify the ZIP safely?
- Confirm the account. Before selecting the download control, verify that the signed-in account matches the one that submitted the request.
- Download the ZIP. Save the original archive without renaming its internal files or editing its contents.
- Check the archive opens. Use your operating system’s archive tool to open it and confirm that files are readable.
- Look for the conversations you expect. Review the conversation data and any files or assets that matter to you.
- Keep the original. Make a working copy if you plan to sort or convert files; retain the untouched ZIP as the reference copy.
- Protect access. OpenAI warns that an export can contain sensitive account information. Do not forward the download notice, publish the ZIP, or leave it in an unprotected shared folder.
Verification is important because receiving a ZIP does not by itself prove that every item you expected is represented. Open the archive, inspect its top-level folders and files, and note anything that is intentionally outside the export scope.
What files can be inside a ChatGPT export?
The exact layout can vary with account type and export size. OpenAI’s guidance describes the following possible contents:

Scheduled tasks, shared scheduled-task links and their saved snapshots are not currently included in personal account exports, according to OpenAI’s guidance. If those items are important, record them separately instead of assuming they will appear in the ZIP.
How large will the export be?
OpenAI does not publish a general export-size or chat-count statistic in its current guidance. The archive size depends on the data associated with your account, so choose storage based on the ZIP you actually receive rather than on a guessed limit. Check available space before copying the archive and leave room for an extracted working copy if you need to inspect individual files.

How should I keep a personal backup of the export?
A useful personal copy has three characteristics: the original archive remains unchanged, at least one copy is on a different device, and access is restricted because the data may be sensitive.
Use a clear, date-based folder
Create a folder such as ChatGPT-export-2026-10-26. Put the untouched ZIP inside it and keep any extracted or converted files in a separate subfolder. The date makes it easier to identify the newest archive when you make another export.
Keep two local copies
Store one copy on your computer and another on separate local storage, such as a USB flash drive or an external SSD. A second device protects you if the first computer fails or is replaced. Keep the original ZIP on both devices before making edits to extracted files.
Protect the storage
Use the operating system’s account and disk-security features, and choose encrypted storage when your device supports it. Keep removable media somewhere physically secure. Do not upload the archive to a shared folder unless every person with access is authorized to see the account data.

Exports are snapshots, not a live backup. If you need a current record, submit a new export and give it a new date-based folder. Do not overwrite the previous ZIP until you have opened and checked the new one.
Should I use a USB flash drive or an external SSD?
Neither device is required by OpenAI. They are optional ways to retain the downloaded ZIP, and the right choice depends on whether you need a small, occasional copy or repeated, larger archives.

For a single export, a USB flash drive may be sufficient if it has enough free space and you keep another copy elsewhere. An external SSD is a practical higher-capacity option when you expect repeated exports or want room for extracted files. These are storage decisions, not requirements of the export process.

Is exporting the same as deleting chats or changing model-improvement settings?
No. Exporting creates a copy of available account data. Deleting chats is a separate action, and the Improve the model for everyone setting is a separate privacy control.
Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete or hide saved chats. It changes whether new conversations are used to improve OpenAI models. If you want a copy, export it; if you want to remove chats, use the deletion controls; if you want to change model-improvement use, adjust that setting independently.

You can upload conversations.json, or the numbered conversation files in a larger export, to a new conversation in another personal ChatGPT account so ChatGPT can use the exported data as reference. That does not create a full account migration.
The upload does not merge the accounts, rebuild the old sidebar, or transfer subscriptions, memories, custom GPTs, files or workspace access. Treat it as a reference package inside a new conversation, and keep the original ZIP in your personal archive.
How do I fix common export problems?
No email or SMS notice arrives
Check the contact channels associated with the account and confirm that you are checking the same account that submitted the request. Remember that OpenAI allows up to seven days for delivery. If the Settings route is unavailable for your account type, use the Privacy Portal process or ask your workspace administrator.

The link is time-limited. Submit a fresh export request and download the new archive promptly when its notice arrives; do not rely on an old message.
The archive appears to be missing conversations
Open the ZIP rather than judging it by the download name. Check for conversations.json or numbered conversation files, inspect the relevant folders and remember that scheduled tasks and their saved snapshots are outside the current personal export scope.

The archive is too large to work with comfortably
Keep the original ZIP intact, then make a separate working copy and extract only what you need for review. Because no general export-size limit is published, use the actual archive size to select storage and leave additional space for extraction.
You downloaded while signed in to the wrong account
Stop and verify the account identity before opening or distributing the file. Request and download an export for each account separately if you maintain more than one personal login.

What is the safest export-and-backup checklist?
- Confirm that the account is personal, eligible Edu, or a managed workspace with an administrator-approved process.

Can I request an export for more than one ChatGPT account?
Yes, but each request is tied to the account that submits it. Sign in to each personal account separately, request its archive, and label the resulting folders so you do not mix data between accounts.
Does the export preserve the ChatGPT sidebar exactly as I see it?
No. The archive contains conversation data and related records, but using the files in another account does not recreate the old sidebar or merge the original account structure.
Are scheduled tasks included in a personal data export?
OpenAI’s current guidance says scheduled tasks, shared scheduled-task links and their saved snapshots are not currently included. Save any task instructions or results you need through a separate method.
How often should I make a personal ChatGPT export?
There is no universal schedule. Make one before deleting important chats, changing accounts or devices, or reaching a project milestone, then create additional dated snapshots whenever the value of the new conversations justifies another archive.
