To move your ChatGPT history into Gemini, request a ChatGPT data export, keep the resulting ZIP file intact, and upload it in Gemini through Settings & help → Import memory to Gemini → Import chats → Add. Google supports ZIP files up to 5 GB and allows up to five ZIP uploads per day. Gemini imports the text of your conversations so you can search and continue them, but ChatGPT-generated images, generated files, project attachments, memories, custom instructions, GPTs, subscriptions, and workspace membership do not migrate.
The process is a transfer copy, not a reconstruction of your old ChatGPT account. Your original conversations remain in ChatGPT, while Gemini creates imported-chat entries that you can manage or delete separately.

The migration has four stages: ChatGPT prepares a downloadable data archive, you preserve the original ZIP, Gemini receives that ZIP through its memory-import tool, and Google processes the archive into searchable imported chats. The ZIP is the input Gemini’s native importer expects; do not replace it with a pasted transcript or an extracted JSON file unless you are handling the archive for another purpose.
Google says processing can take up to one day. Imported conversations appear in Gemini’s Chats list with an imported-chat marker. If processing is interrupted and conversations are incomplete, delete the affected import entry and submit the ZIP again.

Google does not state that the importer recreates ChatGPT’s sidebar, folders, projects, or every account-level setting. Treat the result as a searchable copy of chat text rather than a full account migration.
What do I need before exporting my ChatGPT history?
You need access to the ChatGPT account containing the conversations, a personal Google Account that meets Gemini’s age and region requirements, and enough local storage for the ZIP plus a backup copy. Check eligibility first; the import controls may not appear on a restricted account or in an unsupported country.
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account whose conversations you want to export.
- Sign in to the personal Google Account you will use with Gemini.
- Have a stable connection and local disk space for a potentially large archive.
- Decide where the original ZIP will be stored before uploading it.
- If the archive contains sensitive conversations, use a private, access-controlled location and avoid sharing the file casually.
Exports are tied to the account that requested them. If you are moving material from a different ChatGPT account, request the export while signed in to that account; do not assume that an export from one account contains another account’s history.
How do I request a ChatGPT data export?
OpenAI’s documented path is in ChatGPT’s account settings. The export arrives as a ZIP download after the request is completed.
- Open ChatGPT and open the profile menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Select Export data and confirm the request.
- Remain signed in to the same account until the export is ready, then download the ZIP when ChatGPT provides it.
Keep the downloaded archive unchanged. Make a second backup before uploading if the conversations are important. The export is a data package, not a live connection between the two services, so requesting it does not give Gemini continuing access to future ChatGPT chats.
Should I extract the ZIP before importing it?
No. Gemini’s native chat importer expects the ZIP itself. Preserve one untouched copy and upload another copy if you want an additional safety margin.

When extraction is useful
Extraction can help you inspect or reuse the archive outside Gemini. OpenAI says that extracting an export exposes conversations.json or, in some exports, numbered conversation JSON files. Those files can be useful when you need to locate a particular conversation, archive the data independently, or work with another ChatGPT account’s export.
Do not confuse inspection with Gemini’s import requirement: for the native Gemini flow, select the original ZIP in the file picker. Uploading a single extracted JSON file is not the documented path.
How to handle the archive safely
- Keep the original ZIP until you have verified that Gemini shows the imported conversations you need.
- Use a clear filename that identifies the source account and export date, but do not put sensitive conversation content in the filename.
- Do not email the archive or place it in a publicly shared folder; it may contain years of private prompts and responses.
- If you inspect files, close them afterward and retain the untouched ZIP as your recovery copy.
Where is Gemini’s “Import chats” setting?
In Gemini on the web, open Settings & help, choose Import memory to Gemini, then use the Import chats section. Select Add to choose your ChatGPT ZIP.
- Go to Gemini at
gemini.google.comand sign in to an eligible personal Google Account. - Open Settings & help.
- Select Import memory to Gemini.
- Find Import chats and click Add.
- Select the ChatGPT export ZIP from your device.
- Start the import and leave the process to complete on Google’s servers.
If you cannot find Import memory to Gemini, check the account type, age requirement, and regional availability first. The feature is not documented for work, school, or supervised accounts, and Google currently lists the EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom as unavailable regions.

Google says processing may take up to one day, so a successful upload does not mean that every chat will appear immediately. Avoid deleting the ZIP or assuming that an empty Chats list means the export failed while processing is still underway.
If the import completes normally
Look in Gemini’s Chats list for entries carrying an imported-chat marker. Open several conversations from different dates to confirm that the text you care about is present, rather than checking only one recent chat.

If conversations are partial or missing
Google’s guidance for an interrupted import is to delete the import entry and try again. Retain the original ZIP, remove the incomplete import from Gemini, and submit the same archive again. If the retry still fails, verify that the file is a ZIP, that it is no larger than 5 GB, and that you have not exceeded the five-file daily allowance.
What transfers from ChatGPT, and what does not?
The most important distinction is between conversation text and everything attached to or configured around that text. Gemini imports the text of chats, but the migration does not reproduce the complete ChatGPT account environment.

For a conversation that depends on a spreadsheet, PDF, image, code archive, or other attachment, the imported text may refer to material Gemini has not received. Upload the required file separately and explain its role in the conversation so Gemini has the missing context.
Is native ZIP import better than copying chats manually?
For a large history, native ZIP import is usually the practical choice because it handles many text conversations in one operation. Manual copy and paste remains useful for a small number of priority chats or when you need to rebuild context around attachments, but it does not offer the same bulk coverage.

When manual transfer makes more sense
- You need only a handful of active conversations.
- A chat depends heavily on files or images that you intend to reattach immediately.
- You want to rewrite the opening prompt so Gemini receives a cleaner, shorter context.
- Your Google Account or region cannot use the native importer.
How do I find, delete, or retry imported chats?
Imported conversations are listed with an imported-chat marker in Gemini’s Chats list. You can manage an individual imported chat or remove an entire import batch, according to Google’s guidance.
Delete one imported conversation
Open the imported chat in Gemini and use the chat’s delete control. This removes that Gemini copy; it does not turn the conversation back into a ChatGPT chat.

Delete an entire import
Use Gemini’s controls for the import entry or batch when you want to remove all chats brought in by that upload. This is the relevant recovery action when a batch is partial and you need to retry it.
Retry without losing your backup
Keep the ZIP outside Gemini, delete the incomplete import, and upload the preserved archive again. Do not create a new ChatGPT export for every retry unless you have a specific reason; the original archive is the file Google instructs you to reuse.

The import option is missing
Confirm that you are using a personal Google Account, are at least 18, and are not in a region Google currently excludes. Work, school, and supervised accounts are not supported for this feature.
The file is rejected
Check that you selected the ChatGPT export ZIP rather than an extracted JSON file and that the archive does not exceed 5 GB. If you have already submitted five ZIP files that day, wait for the daily allowance to reset before trying another upload.

Allow the full processing window Google describes, which can be up to one day. If the eventual result is partial, delete the import entry and retry with the original ZIP.
Text appears but an answer lacks context
That usually indicates a missing attachment, generated image, project file, or other non-text item. Locate the original file in your local backup and upload it to Gemini separately before asking it to continue the work.
You exported the wrong ChatGPT account
Exports belong to the signed-in account that requested them. Request a new export from the correct account, then import that ZIP; changing Gemini accounts cannot add conversations that were never present in the archive.
Does this export move your entire ChatGPT account?
No. OpenAI describes a data export as an archive of account data, not a full account migration. It does not recreate the old ChatGPT sidebar or transfer subscriptions, memories, custom instructions, GPTs, files, or workspace membership. Gemini’s importer adds conversation text to Gemini; it does not merge the two services’ settings, billing, or identity systems.
Plan the migration in two layers: import the text history in bulk, then manually recreate the small set of preferences and re-upload the files that your ongoing work actually requires. This avoids treating a successful ZIP upload as proof that every part of a ChatGPT workspace is available in Gemini.
What should I verify after migration?
Use a short acceptance checklist rather than assuming that the presence of an imported marker means every conversation is complete.
- Open an old, a recent, and a long conversation.
- Search for a distinctive phrase you know appears in the history.
- Check whether conversations that depended on attachments need those files uploaded again.
- Confirm that important images and generated files exist in your separate backup.
- Record any preferences or instructions that must be recreated manually.
- Keep the original ZIP until the imported set has passed your checks.

Can I import a ChatGPT export into Gemini from my phone?
Google’s documented flow is presented for Gemini on the web at gemini.google.com. If the mobile app does not show the import controls, use a desktop browser or the web interface with the eligible Google Account.
Will a second import create duplicate Gemini chats?
Google documents deletion of an import entry and retrying an interrupted batch, but it does not promise automatic deduplication for repeated successful uploads. Before submitting the same archive again, remove the earlier import if it is incomplete or unnecessary.

Can I keep using ChatGPT while Gemini processes the archive?
Yes. The export is a downloaded snapshot requested from ChatGPT, and Gemini processes that ZIP separately. Conversations created after the export request are not part of that particular archive.
Does Gemini preserve ChatGPT conversation names and dates exactly?
