To remove an AI assistant’s personal information safely, export a copy first, inspect its memory controls and ask what it remembers, then delete both the saved memory and the conversation, file, app connection, or chat-history data that supplied it. Finally, turn off future personalization and verify again after the provider’s stated deletion window. A memory toggle usually stops new saving or use; it does not erase existing chats or memories by itself.

The exact controls differ among ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot, and may also change by plan, region, device, or work account. The procedures below reflect the interfaces and policies documented on October 26, 2026.

What does an AI assistant’s “memory” actually include?

“Memory” is not always one database. An assistant can keep several related but separate stores, each with its own control and retention behavior:

  • Saved memories: explicit facts or preferences presented as reusable profile information, such as your name, writing style, or dietary preference.
  • Chat history: the original conversations in which you disclosed information. A saved memory can remain after the source chat is deleted, and a chat can remain after its derived memory is removed.
  • Files and libraries: uploaded documents, images, or other attachments that contain personal details.
  • Connected apps: external services that supplied data the assistant used for personalization.
  • Inferences: conclusions derived from previous chats, including personalization based on chat-history analysis rather than a visible, editable memory entry.
  • Workspace or project data: team, school, enterprise, or project-level content subject to an administrator’s retention rules.

A memory page is therefore a control surface, not necessarily a complete inventory of every place your information exists. Removing one visible entry may leave the source conversation, an uploaded file, or an inferred profile signal elsewhere.

What is the safest order for exporting, reviewing, and deleting memory?

Use this order whenever you want a thorough cleanup. It preserves evidence for your own records and reduces the chance that a deleted detail will be recreated from an overlooked source.

  1. Identify the account context. Note whether you are using a consumer account, a Microsoft 365 work or school account, a team workspace, or an enterprise project. Features and retention rules can differ, and an administrator may control some settings.
  2. Export before deleting. Save the provider’s available account archive or memory text to a local computer, and optionally to a USB flash drive. Keep the date, account, and workspace noted beside the file so you can tell which export you are reviewing.
  3. Read the memory view. Open the provider’s memory or personalization page. Record entries you may want to correct, preserve, or remove. A screenshot or copied text gives you a reference if the interface changes.
  4. Ask the assistant directly. Use a plain-language question such as “What do you remember about me?” This can reveal relevant personalization that is not obvious from the settings page, but treat the answer as a check rather than a complete data map.
  5. Trace each detail to its sources. Search chats, archived conversations, uploaded files, project spaces, and connected apps for the same information. Mark every copy that needs action.
  6. Delete the saved memory and its sources. Where the provider separates those actions, perform both. Delete or edit the memory entry, then remove the source chat, file, app connection, or history-derived personalization that can recreate it.
  7. Disable future use if needed. Turn off memory, chat-history reference, chat search, or saved-memory controls according to your goal. A toggle normally changes future behavior; it is not a substitute for deletion.
  8. Verify after propagation. Reopen the memory page, ask what remains, and check the original source locations. If the detail still appears, repeat the source deletion or contact the account administrator. Providers may describe delays, retention for safety or debugging, or re-creation after a setting is re-enabled.

How do I export and delete memory in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT separates saved memories from chats and other account content. For a complete removal, handle the saved memory, the chat where it originated, and any copies in files or connected services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Review the saved-memory controls

Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. The available controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Read the memory summary and, where offered, edit, correct, or delete individual entries. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers about you and compare that answer with the settings page.

2. Export before making changes

Use OpenAI’s account data-export control in Settings to download a copy before deletion. This is an account-wide archive rather than a narrowly labeled memory file, so store it securely and identify the date and account it represents.

3. Remove both the memory and its source

Delete the saved memory entry, then delete the chat in which you shared the detail. Also check regular and archived chats, Library files, and connected apps for duplicate copies. If the information came from an integration, removing only the ChatGPT memory does not remove the original data held by that service.

4. Stop new personalization

Disable Memory if you do not want new saved memories. If you also disable Reference chat history, OpenAI says derived information from chat history is scheduled for deletion within 30 days while the original chats remain. Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Allow for deletion and retention windows

OpenAI says deletion updates can take time. Logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That statement describes a policy window, not a promise that every visible control changes instantly, so perform a later verification pass.

How do I export and delete memory in Claude?

Claude provides a memory-specific view and a text-based way to copy what it remembers. Conversation deletion and memory-topic deletion are separate operations.

1. Open the current memory manager

Go to Settings > Your Claude and select Manage next to Your memory. Older layouts may show the controls under Settings > Memory or Settings > Capabilities. Read the listed topics, edit inaccurate information, or delete topics you no longer want retained.

2. Create a readable backup

Ask Claude in a chat: Write out your memories of me verbatim, exactly as they appear in your memory. Save the response as a text backup before deleting anything. This gives you a memory-focused record that is easier to inspect than a general account archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Delete topics and conversations separately

Remove the relevant memory topics in the manager, then delete the conversations that supplied them. Anthropic documents that deleting a conversation does not automatically remove memory entries generated from it, so doing only one of those actions can leave the other in place.

4. Handle import and migration carefully

Claude offers an import flow for pasted memory from another provider. Anthropic labels memory imports experimental and says the result may not reproduce every detail. Treat the imported text as a starting point: review each topic after import rather than assuming a lossless transfer.

5. Disable related features when appropriate

Turn memory or chat search off in Settings if you do not want those features used going forward. Project and organizational retention rules can impose separate behavior, so a personal setting may not override a workspace policy.

How do I delete saved memories in Microsoft Copilot?

Copilot exposes saved-memory entries and a separate control for personalization derived from chat history. Turning off saved memories alone does not remove entries already stored.

1. Find Personalization

Open Copilot settings and look for Personalization, or Chat settings > Personalization, depending on the account surface. Under Saved memories, review individual entries and delete selected items, or choose Delete all memories.

2. Turn off future saving

Switch off the Saved memories toggle to stop saving new memories. Microsoft states that switching it off by itself does not delete already saved memories, so complete the deletion action separately.

3. Remove chat-history inferences

If the unwanted detail was inferred from previous conversations, use the Chat history personalization control as well. Work or school accounts may show Chat history & work insights and may require an administrator to change the setting.

4. Watch for re-creation

Microsoft warns that if Chat history is turned back on within 30 days, memories inferred from chat history can be added again. Leave the relevant history setting off while you verify the cleanup, then ask Copilot, “What do you know about me?”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Repeat source deletion when necessary

If Copilot still mentions the unwanted detail, locate and remove the originating conversation or work-data source permitted by your account. In an organization, ask the administrator which retention or compliance rule applies before assuming a personal toggle can erase it.

What is different about the three providers?

The main differences are the unit you can export, the separation between a memory and its source, and how each provider describes disablement and delayed deletion.

Provider Visible control Export or migration What deletion must cover Disablement and timing Verification
ChatGPT Memory summary under Settings > Personalization > Memory; availability varies by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Account-wide data export; the documented procedure does not describe it as a memory-only file. Saved memory, the source chat, and relevant archived chats, Library files, and connected apps. Turning off Memory does not delete chats. Turning off Reference chat history schedules derived-information deletion within 30 days; deleted-memory logs may be retained up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Ask what ChatGPT remembers and inspect the Memory page and source locations.
Claude Topics under Settings > Your Claude > Manage; legacy labels may differ. Verbatim memory text can be saved from a chat. Import from another provider is experimental and may omit details. Memory topics and the conversations that generated them; project or organizational stores may have separate rules. Memory and chat search can be toggled off, but the documented material does not state a universal deletion interval. Review topics and ask for a verbatim memory listing after cleanup.
Microsoft Copilot Saved memories under Personalization or Chat settings > Personalization. A memory-specific export or import procedure is not stated in the documented material. Selected or all saved memories, plus chat-history personalization and permitted source chats or work data. Turning off Saved memories does not remove existing entries. Re-enabling Chat history within 30 days can recreate memories inferred from it. Ask “What do you know about me?” and repeat source deletion if the answer still contains the detail.

Can I move memories from one assistant to another?

Migration is possible in a limited, review-heavy form rather than as a guaranteed one-click transfer.

  • Copilot: The documented controls explain review, deletion, and disablement; they do not specify a memory export/import workflow.

For a safer migration, remove accidental secrets and outdated facts from the text before importing it, then inspect the destination assistant’s memory view and ask it to list what it retained. Why can an assistant still mention something after I deleted the memory?

Usually, the visible memory was only one copy or the deletion has not propagated through every system.

The source chat still exists

Delete the conversation where the detail was disclosed, including an archived copy if the provider treats archived chats separately. A new answer may otherwise be generated from the original text even when the saved-memory entry is gone.

A file or connected app supplied the detail

Inspect Library files, project attachments, and connected services. Remove the file or revoke the relevant connection according to that service’s controls; deleting a summary does not erase the underlying source.

Chat-history personalization remains enabled

Disable the provider’s history-reference or history-personalization setting when the unwanted detail is inferred rather than listed as a saved memory. Copilot specifically warns about re-creation if chat history is re-enabled within 30 days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deletion is still propagating

Wait through the provider’s stated window, sign out and back in, then check again. OpenAI documents up to 30 days for certain derived-information deletion and up to 30 days of safety/debugging log retention for deleted saved memories; these are policy limits, not a guarantee of instant interface updates.

An administrator or retention policy applies

Team, school, enterprise, and project accounts can preserve content under organizational rules. If a control is missing or a source cannot be removed, ask the workspace administrator what retention policy governs that data.

How should I verify that the cleanup worked?

Verification should test both the assistant’s response and the storage locations you can control.

  1. Open the memory or personalization manager and confirm the entry is absent or corrected.
  2. Ask the assistant what it remembers about you without repeating the deleted detail in your prompt.
  3. Search regular and archived chats for distinctive words from the original disclosure.
  4. Check uploaded files, project spaces, and connected-app permissions for duplicate sources.
  5. Repeat the check after the provider’s stated propagation period, especially after changing chat-history settings.
  6. Keep a dated note of what you deleted and any administrator or support response, without retaining the sensitive content in an unnecessary new chat.

A clean answer is useful evidence, but it is not a cryptographic proof of backend erasure. Provider policies can permit temporary safety, debugging, legal, or organizational retention that is not exposed in the user interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do before deleting an entire account?

Account deletion is broader than memory cleanup and can remove data you intended to preserve. Export first, identify any work or school administrator, and separate personal chats from files or integrations shared with other people. If your goal is only to stop personalization, targeted deletion plus disabled memory may be sufficient; if your goal is to remove the account itself, follow the provider’s account-deletion process after securing the archive and checking retention terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an AI memory export the same as an account data export?

No. An account export can contain chats and other account records, while a memory-focused text copy is easier to read and migrate. ChatGPT’s documented export is account-wide; Claude also lets you copy its memory topics as plain text.

How can I keep an export from becoming another privacy risk?

Store it locally with access protection, avoid uploading it to a different assistant until you have removed secrets and outdated facts, and label the account and export date. Delete extra copies when you no longer need them.

What if my employer or school manages the assistant account?

A personal memory toggle may not control project, organizational, or compliance-retained data. Ask the administrator which chats, files, and derived information are subject to retention before relying on consumer-account deletion steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can editing a memory be safer than deleting it?

Editing is useful when the fact is harmless but inaccurate, such as an outdated preference. For sensitive information, delete the memory and every known source instead of replacing it with a revised version that still preserves the underlying disclosure.
