On Mac, use File > Export as > PDF or File > Print. On iPhone or iPad, use Share > Markup to save a PDF, or Share > Print to print. Apple documents these options but does not promise that every Notes feature will look or work identically after conversion.
Which option keeps the note’s layout?
PDF is generally the best choice when you want a fixed-looking, shareable visual copy. Printing from Notes is the direct route to a physical copy. Markdown is better suited to reusing note text in a Markdown-compatible workflow; it is not a guarantee that the original page layout will be reproduced.
Apple’s guides describe export and print workflows rather than a universal formatting guarantee. If a note’s appearance matters, open the saved PDF or inspect a print preview before sharing or printing it.
Export or print a note on Mac
- Export as PDF: In Notes, select the note, then choose File > Export as > PDF and save the file.
- Export as Markdown: Select the note and choose File > Export as > Markdown. Use this for a text-oriented workflow rather than a page-faithful copy.
- Print: Select the note and choose File > Print, then use the print dialog to select the printer and options.
Apple documents these as actions for an individual note in its Mac Notes guide. That guide does not establish a built-in batch-export workflow for an entire Notes library.

Export or print a note on iPhone or iPad
- Save a PDF: Open the note, tap Share > Markup, then save the PDF. If Markup is not shown, check View More.
- Export Markdown: Open the note, tap Share > Export as Markdown, then choose where to send or save it. If the option is not visible, check View More.
- Print: Open the note, tap Share > Print, choose a printer and options, then print. The Print control may be under View More.
Apple says the iPhone and iPad PDF uses the note’s current view settings for attachments. There is an important exception: if the note contains an embedded multipage PDF or scanned document, the exported note PDF includes only the first page of that document. Export the original attachment separately if you need its remaining pages.
See Apple’s iPhone instructions for exporting or printing notes for the documented steps.

What happens to attachments and interactive features?
PDF and print are visual-copy options, not a promise that every element remains interactive. Check complex notes before relying on the result, especially if they contain attachments, tables, lists, drawings, or interactive items.
- Embedded scans and PDFs on iPhone or iPad: The note PDF contains only the first page of a multipage embedded document.
- Pages handoff on iPhone: With a note open, choose Share > Open in Pages. Unlock a locked note first. Apple documents that drawings cannot be edited in Pages, while scanned documents and PDFs appear as thumbnail images. Tags, mentions, checklists, and links to notes are not active items, and a Pages document created from a shared note is not itself shared.
Those documented limits mean that opening a note in Pages can be useful for continuing word-processing work, but it is not a lossless archive of the Notes note.

When should you use Markdown?
Choose Markdown when you need note content for a compatible text-based workflow and are prepared to work with a text-oriented format. Do not choose it on the assumption that it will preserve the exact visual layout of the Notes page.
Apple’s import guidance says that macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and later can convert Markdown syntax to rich text when importing into Notes. That describes the import direction; it does not guarantee a lossless round trip from Notes to Markdown and back. Apple lists TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML, ENEX, and MD as Mac import types, and notes that unsupported Evernote features or attachments are not imported. See Apple’s Notes import and sharing guidance.

Check the result before relying on it
- Open the exported PDF and check page breaks, images, and other visual elements.
- For print, review the preview and pagination before sending the job to the printer.
- If the note has an embedded multipage scan or PDF and you are exporting from iPhone or iPad, confirm that you have the full attachment separately.
- If you hand off to Pages, verify the features you need there; Apple documents specific limitations for drawings, attachments, and interactive Notes items.
Apple’s Notes guide for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch describes Notes features and use. Its export guidance does not establish that every feature renders identically in every output format.
