The strongest way to evaluate the AI power trade is to separate real, financeable electricity demand from announcements, then follow the money from a data-center project to the companies that earn on generation, grids, transformers, electrical distribution, cooling, and backup power. Compare each company’s demand certainty, bottleneck position, contract economics, backlog quality, capital needs, regulation, and valuation. The opportunity is substantial: the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects global data-center electricity use to rise from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030, while the U.S. Department of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (DOE/LBNL) estimate U.S. data centers could consume 11.8% of national electricity in 2030, with a 9.5%-15.3% scenario range. Those figures are scenarios, not guaranteed earnings. The investment decision depends on which projects get energized, who pays for infrastructure, and whether suppliers can convert backlogs into profitable cash flow.
What does the AI data-center power trade include?
It is a supply-chain investment theme, not a single stock category. AI training and inference require dense computing, and dense computing requires more electricity, substations, transformers, switchgear, power electronics, cooling, generation, transmission, and backup systems. A useful screen therefore includes several business models rather than only electric utilities.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Regulated utilities: earn returns on approved rate-base investment in generation, transmission, distribution, and related infrastructure.
- Merchant generators: sell electricity or capacity at market prices, under power-purchase agreements (PPAs), or through bilateral contracts.
- Grid contractors and distributors: build substations, transmission and distribution systems, install equipment, and manage commissioning.
- Electrical-equipment manufacturers: supply transformers, switchgear, breakers, busways, power-management systems, and related controls.
- Data-center infrastructure suppliers: provide power conditioning, uninterruptible power systems, thermal management, and monitoring.
- Backup-power companies: sell generator sets, engines, fuel systems, batteries, and microgrid controls.
Wesco International’s 2025 project presentation illustrates the chain: a site moves from land and utility substations through generator sets, transformers, electrical distribution, and commissioning. The practical question is not whether AI needs power; it is which link has pricing power, a durable backlog, and acceptable risk at the price you pay.
How much electricity will data centers use, and how reliable are the forecasts?
Demand is growing quickly, but the range of outcomes is wide. Use the forecast interval and the project pipeline’s quality instead of treating one headline number as a certainty.

| Measure | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Global data-center electricity | 485 TWh in 2025 rising to 950 TWh in 2030 | IEA projection; the buildout remains sensitive to financing, market sentiment, grid access, and equipment availability. |
| Global growth in 2025 | 17% for all data centers; 50% for AI-focused centers | IEA reported these growth rates in its 2026 energy-and-AI update. They describe electricity demand, not supplier profit. |
| AI-server power density | 11-times higher in 2025 than in 2020; potentially another fourfold increase by 2027 | Higher density increases the amount of electrical and cooling equipment per data-center hall, but efficiency gains can reduce electricity per unit of compute. |
| U.S. data-center share of electricity in 2030 | 11.8% central DOE/LBNL estimate; 9.5%-15.3% scenario range | The range is more useful for stress-testing a utility plan than the midpoint alone. |
The IEA says global data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, in line with its projections, while AI-focused centers grew 50%. That is evidence that the trend is occurring, not proof that every announced campus will be built. Forecast quality is a risk factor: the Associated Press reported in 2025 that utilities and lawmakers were questioning whether some requests were financially committed or speculative and whether ratepayers could fund unnecessary infrastructure.
How do I distinguish committed data-center demand from speculation?
Build a project ladder. A hyperscaler announcement is the starting point, not the finish line. The closer a project is to construction, energization, and a binding payment obligation, the more weight it should receive in an earnings model.
- Announcement: record the customer, proposed location, power size, target date, and whether the statement is a memorandum, media release, or binding contract.
- Land and permits: verify site control, zoning, environmental approvals, building permits, water arrangements, and evidence of construction activity.
- Interconnection study: identify the utility’s queue position, required transmission upgrades, estimated connection date, and whether studies are complete or conditional.
- Financing and equipment: look for debt commitments, equity funding, long-lead transformer or turbine orders, and contractors mobilized at the site.
- Power contract: distinguish a signed PPA, tariff election, minimum-take obligation, customer deposit, letter of credit, or other credit support from a nonbinding forecast.
- Construction milestones: track foundations, substation delivery, generator installation, energization, and the first operating load.
When reviewing a utility, search its filings for customer deposits, minimum-take commitments, termination payments, credit support, and cost-recovery treatment. A project with a deposit and a payment obligation has a different risk profile from a request for preliminary capacity. Treat a “pipeline” number as uncommitted until construction and energization milestones appear.
Which parts of the supply chain can capture the spending?
AI raises power density, so the opportunity extends beyond megawatt-hours. Each segment has a different way of earning money and a different failure mode.
Regulated utilities
A utility may earn an allowed return on generation, transmission, distribution, substations, and sometimes customer-specific facilities. The key variables are the size and timing of rate-base additions, construction-work-in-progress rules, allowed return on equity, fuel and purchased-power exposure, and whether regulators assign dedicated data-center costs to the customer rather than to ordinary ratepayers.
Merchant generators
Generators benefit when contracted power prices, capacity payments, or scarcity pricing rise. Analyze contracted versus merchant megawatts, PPA duration and credit quality, fuel-price sensitivity, heat-rate performance, capacity-market exposure, and the age and reliability of the fleet. A large load forecast can increase prices, but a merchant owner also bears downside if projects are delayed or supply expands.

Transmission and distribution contractors
Contractors and electrical distributors can receive orders before a utility earns a regulated return. Examine backlog conversion, labor availability, bonding capacity, working-capital needs, fixed-price versus cost-plus terms, cancellation provisions, and customer concentration. A full backlog is not automatically valuable if it is low-margin, unfinanced, or vulnerable to delay.
Transformers, switchgear, and power-management equipment
These products sit at recognized bottlenecks. Manufacturers can benefit from long lead times and pricing power, but investors must test whether capacity expansion, input costs, warranty claims, and a customer’s ability to cancel will erode margins. Service, replacement, and monitoring revenue can make earnings less dependent on one construction cycle.
Cooling, power electronics, and data-center systems
Higher rack density increases the need for thermal management, power conditioning, and controls. Vertiv reported 35% year-over-year sales growth, approximately 15% organic order growth, and an $8.5 billion backlog in the second quarter of 2025, citing robust data-center demand. Those figures show exposure and momentum; they do not establish how much of the backlog will ship at current margins.
Backup generation and storage
Generator sets, batteries, and microgrids provide resilience while grid connections are delayed or during outages. Their economics depend on utilization, emissions rules, fuel logistics, maintenance contracts, and whether temporary generation becomes a long-term asset. Backup equipment can be ordered early, but revenue recognition may precede the customer’s final operating load.

How does the earnings transmission differ between utilities, generators, and suppliers?
Start with the contract that converts AI demand into cash flow. The same data-center megawatt can create regulated rate base, a fixed-price equipment order, or volatile merchant revenue.
| Company type | Primary earnings bridge | Metrics to inspect | Principal downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulated utility | Approved capex becomes rate base and earns an allowed return | Rate-base growth, construction-work-in-progress, regulatory lag, customer cost allocation, fuel exposure, credit quality | Regulator disallows costs, delays recovery, or shifts infrastructure costs to shareholders |
| Merchant generator | Energy, capacity, and ancillary-service prices or contracted PPAs | Contracted/merchant mix, PPA tenor, counterparty credit, fuel sensitivity, capacity-market exposure | Project delay, lower power prices, fuel inflation, or contract rollover |
| Equipment manufacturer | Orders convert to shipments, gross profit, and service revenue | Book-to-bill, backlog age, lead times, pricing, capacity, warranty reserves, customer concentration | Cancellation, cost overruns, quality claims, or a demand pause |
| Contractor or distributor | Backlog converts through project execution and working-capital cycles | Backlog margin, labor, bonding, receivables, change orders, cancellation terms | Execution delay, labor shortage, fixed-price losses, or customer insolvency |
Use company disclosures as evidence of exposure, not as a guarantee. Eaton reported 7% rolling order acceleration in Electrical Americas and 18% electrical-sector backlog growth in 2025, driven by data-center momentum. GE Vernova reported a backlog above $150 billion and an Electrification equipment backlog above $35 billion in its 2025 annual report. The relevant follow-up is how much of each backlog is scheduled, cancellable, profitable, and tied to data centers rather than other end markets.

What common axes should I use to compare stocks?
A consistent scorecard prevents a compelling growth story from hiding weak economics. Rate each candidate on the following axes, then investigate any score that depends on an unsupported assumption.
- Demand certainty: signed contracts and credit support rank above interconnection requests and public announcements.
- Bottleneck position: scarce transformers, switchgear, turbines, grid connections, and specialized cooling can have more pricing power than commoditized capacity.
- Contract economics: separate regulated rate base, fixed-price, cost-plus, take-or-pay, and merchant exposure.
- Backlog quality: review customer concentration, cancellation rights, delivery timing, margin, escalation clauses, and whether deposits have been collected.
- Capital intensity and financing: model capex, working capital, leverage, refinancing needs, interest rates, and the effect of construction delays.
- Regulatory and social risk: include ratepayer allocation, permitting, emissions, water use, land, noise, and local opposition.
- Valuation: compare the price paid for AI-linked growth with base-business cash flow and a slower-buildout case.
How should I model bottlenecks, policy, and timing?
Assume that demand can be real and still arrive later than the market expects. The IEA identifies constrained grid connections, transformers, gas turbines, planning approvals, and capital as bottlenecks. It estimates that meeting data-center demand could require $170 billion of new generation investment by 2030. Those constraints affect suppliers through lead times and utilities through project schedules and regulatory filings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGrid connection risk
Check the interconnection queue, required network upgrades, transmission ownership, and the date at which the customer must begin paying. A delayed connection can leave equipment suppliers with inventory and utilities with construction-work-in-progress that earns little or no return until placed in service.
Equipment scarcity
Long lead times can support pricing, but they can also prevent revenue conversion. Ask whether the company has secured materials, expanded factories responsibly, and included escalation clauses. Compare the age of backlog with current delivery windows; an old backlog may signal deferrals rather than demand strength.
Permitting and community acceptance
Large facilities may face reviews involving emissions, water, noise, land, and transmission corridors. A project that lacks permits should not be treated like one with an energized substation. Local opposition can change route, schedule, or cost even when the customer remains committed.
Ratepayer allocation
Regulators may require data-center customers to pay dedicated infrastructure, minimum bills, or exit fees. That protects other customers but can reduce the utility’s volume opportunity. Conversely, social pressure may lead regulators to reject spending that appears oversized for an uncertain load.

What downside cases belong in an AI power-stock model?
Use a scenario table rather than a single growth rate. The IEA says data-center construction is sensitive to market sentiment and financing conditions, and that bottlenecks reduce the likelihood of aggressive near-term scenarios.
| Downside case | What changes | Companies most exposed |
|---|---|---|
| Slower AI adoption | Fewer servers and delayed campus phases reduce load growth | Merchant generators, equipment makers with concentrated backlogs, highly valued specialists |
| Efficiency gains | More compute per kilowatt lowers electricity per task | Utilities and generation owners relying on uninterrupted volume growth |
| Project cancellation | Announcements fail to reach financing or construction | Contractors, distributors, and suppliers with cancellable orders |
| Interconnection delay | Equipment arrives before the facility can draw power | Utilities, contractors, and working-capital-heavy manufacturers |
| Transformer or turbine shortage | Schedules slip and costs rise | Fixed-price contractors and customers funding their own infrastructure |
| Higher interest rates | Capital-intensive projects become less attractive or require more equity | Leveraged utilities, developers, and merchant generators |
| Regulatory rejection | Costs are disallowed or shifted away from general rate base | Utilities with speculative network expansion |
| Cost overrun | Margins fall or completion requires additional capital | Fixed-price contractors and equipment suppliers with weak escalation clauses |
For each company, calculate revenue, operating income, free cash flow, leverage, and valuation under a base case, a slower-buildout case, and a severe delay case. Do not allow a higher megawatt forecast to improve the model unless the company has a credible contract and a timetable for converting it into earnings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I look for in filings and investor presentations?
Read the footnotes and definitions, not only the headline backlog. A practical review sequence is:
- Identify the company’s reporting segments and isolate the segment that actually sells power, grid equipment, or data-center systems.
- Reconcile reported backlog with orders, shipments, cancellations, book-to-bill, and revenue recognized during the period.
- Check whether management defines data-center exposure by end customer, product, geography, or an estimate based on project type.
- Review concentration: one hyperscaler, utility, distributor, or contractor can represent a large share of future sales.
- Read warranty, indemnity, liquidated-damages, and customer-termination disclosures for projects with unusual scale.
- Compare capital spending and hiring with the claimed opportunity. Capacity expansion funded by debt deserves a different valuation from expansion funded by operating cash flow.
- Track guidance changes. A reduction in timing, margin, or cash-flow guidance can reveal execution pressure before backlog falls.
Management commentary can establish exposure but cannot prove incremental profit. Eaton’s order and backlog data, Vertiv’s 2025 sales, organic orders, and backlog, and GE Vernova’s reported backlogs are useful starting points; they still require segment-level margin, timing, and customer analysis.
What mistakes make investors overestimate the AI power opportunity?
- Counting every announced megawatt: announcements mix exploratory requests, permitted projects, and funded construction.
- Confusing electricity demand with shareholder returns: a utility may spend heavily while earning a regulated return only after approval and placement in service.
- Ignoring who pays: dedicated customer facilities may not enter ordinary rate base, and a customer can negotiate exit protections.
- Using backlog as revenue: backlog can be cancellable, delayed, low-margin, or dependent on a single customer.
- Overlooking efficiency: better chips, software, and cooling can reduce electricity per computation even as total computing expands.
- Ignoring financing: high rates and tight credit can stop a project after equipment orders but before energization.
- Assuming bottlenecks always help suppliers: shortages can delay shipments, raise warranty risk, and force expensive capacity additions.
- Paying any price for exposure: a strong business can still be a poor investment when valuation already assumes the high end of the DOE/LBNL range.
How can I build a repeatable stock-screening process?
Use the following workflow quarterly or whenever a company updates guidance.
- Set the demand range: anchor the model to the DOE/LBNL 9.5%-15.3% U.S. scenario range and the IEA global outlook rather than a single promotional estimate.
- Create a project ledger: classify each customer project as announced, permitted, financed, under construction, energized, or operating.
- Map the company’s position: mark whether it earns from generation, transmission, transformers, switchgear, cooling, backup power, or services.
- Identify the contract: label revenue as regulated, fixed-price, cost-plus, take-or-pay, PPA-based, or merchant.
- Test conversion: estimate when orders become shipments, when shipments become cash, and what working capital is required.
- Stress execution: add delays, cancellations, shortages, cost overruns, and higher interest rates.
- Stress policy: model rejected rate recovery, customer-specific cost allocation, permitting delays, emissions limits, and water constraints.
- Value the base business: calculate what the company is worth without incremental AI demand, then value the exposure separately.
- Set monitoring triggers: track deposits, interconnection approvals, equipment deliveries, backlog aging, margin guidance, and customer concentration.
- Require a margin of safety: buy only when the valuation compensates for forecast error and the company’s balance sheet can survive a delayed buildout.
Is the AI power trade investable despite forecast uncertainty?
Yes, but it is not one trade and it is not a guaranteed straight-line boom. The most defensible candidates combine visible customer commitments, a scarce product or regulated asset, strong contract protections, manageable capital requirements, and a valuation that still works if the buildout lands near the low end of published scenarios. Utilities offer potential rate-base compounding but face approval and cost-allocation risk. Equipment and infrastructure suppliers can grow faster but carry backlog, execution, concentration, and cyclicality risk. Merchant generators offer direct power-price exposure with the greatest volatility.
Best Value
The IEA’s statement that the world’s data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, and its projection from 485 TWh to 950 TWh by 2030, establish a material demand direction. DOE/LBNL’s 9.5%-15.3% U.S. range establishes uncertainty. The investment work is deciding which projects are committed, which bottleneck the company controls, and how much of the expected cash flow is already reflected in the share price.
GE Vernova’s 2025 annual-report letter captures the broad thesis: “The world needs more energy, and a larger portion must be electric power for people and communities around the world to thrive.” It also identifies industrialization, advanced manufacturing, AI data centers, and electrification of buildings and transport as drivers. Those statements describe a large market opportunity; disciplined analysis still requires project-level evidence, contract review, downside cases, and valuation.

Do data centers always increase a utility’s profits?
No. A utility may need to spend first and wait for regulatory approval, and dedicated facilities may be paid for directly by the customer rather than included in general rate base. Delays, cost disallowances, or customer departures can leave shareholders carrying the investment.
What is book-to-bill, and why does it matter for power-equipment stocks?
Book-to-bill compares new orders with revenue recognized over a period. A ratio above one can indicate expanding demand, but it is meaningful only when orders are collectible, profitable, and deliverable within the stated lead times.
How can I tell whether a backlog is concentrated?
Read customer-concentration disclosures, segment notes, and major-contract language, then compare named customers with total backlog. A backlog dependent on one developer, hyperscaler, or distributor deserves a larger haircut than a diversified backlog with deposits and firm delivery dates.
Can energy efficiency reduce the AI power investment opportunity?
Yes. More efficient chips, software, and cooling can reduce electricity per computation. Total demand can still rise if usage expands faster, so model both electricity intensity and the number of computing tasks rather than assuming either one is constant.

What regulatory documents are most useful for utility investors?
Integrated-resource plans, rate-case filings, transmission proceedings, interconnection rules, and commission orders reveal how spending will be approved and recovered. They often provide more reliable cost-allocation and timing information than a company presentation.
