Do not connect an AI agent to an account until you know exactly what it can read, what actions it can take, and how you will cut off access. Treat it as a new actor with its own identity, permissions, and ability to affect the outside world. Start with the narrowest read-only access that can do the job; add write or send privileges only when necessary, and require fresh approval for consequential actions.

This approach helps answer the practical questions behind “Is it safe to give an AI agent access to my email or bank account?” and “Can an AI agent be tricked by a web page or email?” Safety depends less on a promise that the agent will behave and more on whether its access is limited, observable, and revocable when it does not.

What can go wrong when an AI agent connects to an account?

An AI agent may read information, call tools, and take actions on your behalf. That combination creates risks beyond ordinary software access: the agent can misinterpret instructions, be influenced by hostile content, misuse a tool, or expose data through an output or integration.

Prompt and goal hijacking

An agent may encounter instructions inside a web page, email, document, issue, tool description, or API response. Those instructions might tell it to ignore its task, reveal information, or take an unrelated action. This is often called direct or indirect prompt injection, or goal hijacking. Microsoft’s guidance is to treat external inputs—including retrieved content and tool outputs—as untrusted by default. A useful design keeps instructions, data, memory, and tool parameters separate rather than treating everything the model reads as equally authoritative.

Tool misuse and privilege escalation

A set of individually ordinary tools can produce a high-impact result when combined. For example, access to read records plus a tool that can send messages may let an agent disclose information even if neither tool looks dangerous in isolation. An excessively broad OAuth or API scope increases the damage a mistaken or manipulated call can do. OWASP recommends granting an agent only the tools needed for its specific task and scoping permissions per tool.

Credential confusion and data leakage

If an agent uses a person’s credentials, its activity can be difficult to distinguish from that person’s activity, and it may inherit permissions unrelated to the task. OpenID Foundation guidance says agents should have distinct identities rather than borrowed credentials. Sensitive data can also escape through prompts, tool calls, logs, memory, or generated outputs. Minimize the context the agent receives, redact secrets, restrict where it can send data, and avoid logging credentials or unnecessary personal content.

Excessive autonomy and changing components

Sending a message, deleting a record, making a purchase, deploying code, changing permissions, or exposing sensitive data can be difficult or impossible to undo. These actions warrant a fresh human confirmation. Risk can also change when a model, plugin, MCP server, retrieval source, or tool description changes or is compromised. Keep an inventory of these components, review changes, isolate them where possible, and repeat security tests after updates.

How should I decide whether an agent needs account access?

Start with the task, not the permission screen. If you cannot describe the work precisely, the records it needs, and the actions it must take, you do not yet have enough information to authorize the connection.

  1. Write the task in one sentence. For example: “Find messages from the last month about the project deadline and summarize them without replying.” Keep the instruction specific enough to distinguish the intended work from adjacent tasks.
  2. Name the exact account and resources. Identify the mailbox, folder, files, records, endpoints, or other data the agent must access. Avoid granting access to an entire account when a smaller collection will do.
  3. List the operations. Separate reading, searching, drafting, editing, sending, deleting, purchasing, and permission changes. “Manage my inbox” is not a useful permission boundary; “search these messages and prepare drafts, but do not send or delete” is much clearer.
  4. Define the limits. Specify which tools and destinations are allowed, how long access is needed, what requires approval, and how you will revoke access. Government guidance emphasizes limiting entitlements to the exact resources, operations, and timeframes required.
  5. Check the provider’s data handling. Do not connect an account if the provider cannot explain what data it retains, where it is processed, how long it is kept, and how you can revoke access.

When comparing the agent’s requested permissions with this list, treat any unexplained extra scope as a reason to stop. A feature being convenient does not make it necessary for the task.

What permissions should I give an AI assistant?

Give it the smallest permission set that can complete the task, and begin with read-only access. Add a write, send, or administrative capability only when the task genuinely requires it and you can put an effective approval and recovery process around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer narrow, read-only access

Choose scopes that limit both the data available and the operations allowed. If the job is to find and summarize records, the agent usually does not need permission to edit or delete them. If it must prepare a message, drafting is safer than sending. Where a service offers resource-level permissions, constrain access to the relevant folders, files, or endpoints rather than the whole account.

Separate reading from writing

Where the system supports it, use distinct identities or credentials for read access and write access. This prevents a task that only needs retrieval from inheriting the ability to change records. Keep elevated access temporary: use just-in-time elevation for a specific operation rather than leaving broad permission in place.

Require fresh approval for consequential actions

Set an approval gate immediately before an action that sends, deletes, buys, deploys, changes permissions, or exposes sensitive data. The confirmation should identify what the agent intends to do and the target. A general permission prompt at setup is not equivalent to approval of a specific later action. Permission prompts are also not a complete security boundary: a manipulated agent may persuade someone to approve an unsafe action. Approval should sit alongside narrow scopes, tool restrictions, and monitoring.

How can I keep an AI agent from sending or deleting things?

Do not rely only on the agent’s promise to refrain. Remove send and delete capabilities when they are unnecessary; when they are required, separate preparation from execution and require a fresh, informed approval before the action occurs.

  • Disable unnecessary write tools. If the task is search or summarization, do not enable tools that send, delete, purchase, deploy, or change permissions.
  • Use an allowlist. Define which tools and domains the agent may contact. Check each tool’s parameters and target against the initiating user’s authorization and the current session, rather than trusting a destination supplied by retrieved content.
  • Separate planning and execution. Let the agent propose a draft or action first. A person should review the exact content, recipient or target, and consequence before execution.
  • Make the approval specific and current. A confirmation for one message or deletion should not silently authorize a different target or later operation. Do not approve a vague request that conceals what will happen.
  • Limit the impact of mistakes. Apply rate limits, token and retry limits, and resource restrictions. These controls can reduce the scale of an error or loop, even if they do not prevent every bad decision.

If the platform cannot enforce these boundaries, consider whether the task is worth connecting at all. An interface that offers a confirmation button but lets the agent act with unrestricted permissions has not contained the underlying capability.

How do I evaluate an agent before connecting my email, bank, or other account?

Use a repeatable review rather than relying on a single security claim or a polished permission dialog. The checks below focus on whether access can be narrowly granted, monitored, and revoked.

What to evaluate Questions to ask Safer evidence
Default permission scope What is enabled before I change anything? Can I grant access only to the needed resources and operations? Narrow access is the default, and broad scopes are not bundled in without a task-related reason.
Read versus write Can I authorize reading without enabling editing, sending, or deletion? Read and write capabilities can be separated and independently limited.
Agent identity Can the agent use a distinct, auditable identity rather than my personal login? Actions can be attributed to a dedicated non-human identity.
Credentials and revocation How long do tokens last? Can I revoke them promptly and confirm that access ended? Credentials are short-lived where possible, revocation is clear, and the provider explains the process.
Approval gates Can I require confirmation for specific high-impact actions? Approval occurs before the operation and identifies its target and intended effect.
Sandbox and network controls Can execution be isolated and network destinations restricted? Filesystem and network access can be limited to what the task requires.
Logs and audit export Can I see which identity invoked which tool, on what target, with what approval and result? Security-relevant activity is recorded without unnecessarily retaining secrets or personal content.
Retention and training use What account data is retained, where is it processed, and how long is it kept? The provider gives a clear, reviewable explanation that answers these questions.
Tools and supply chain Can I inventory, review, and control plugins, MCP servers, retrieval sources, and tool-description changes? Components are isolated where possible, changes are reviewable, and updates trigger retesting.
Incident response and recovery What happens if access is abused or a credential is exposed? Can I revoke access and recover the account? There is an actionable revocation path and a process you can rehearse.

Compare two agents by what they enforce, not merely what they let an administrator configure. The stronger choice makes narrow scopes, independent identity, action approvals, useful logging, and revocation practical and enforceable.

How should I test whether an agent can be manipulated?

Test the agent with hostile inputs before connecting important accounts, then rerun the same cases whenever its prompts, tools, memory, retrieval sources, model provider, or policies change. A successful ordinary task is not evidence that the agent will resist hostile instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prompt override: give it content that tells it to ignore its task or reveal hidden instructions. Check whether it treats that content as untrusted data.
  2. Malicious retrieved content: include a page, email, or document that tries to redirect the agent to another action or destination. Verify that the agent follows the user’s task rather than the embedded instruction.
  3. Tool misuse: test whether it attempts an unrelated tool call, uses parameters outside the task, or targets an unapproved destination.
  4. Privilege escalation: see whether it can reach data or operations beyond the approved scope, including by combining multiple available tools.
  5. Memory poisoning: add content that attempts to change what the agent remembers or how it behaves on a later task. Check whether untrusted content can become a lasting instruction.
  6. Data exfiltration: test whether the agent can transmit sensitive information through a tool, output, or other configured channel to an unauthorized destination.
  7. Loops and high-impact actions: test recursive retries, repeated requests, and attempts to send, delete, buy, deploy, change permissions, or expose data without the required approval.

Record the expected safe behavior and the observed result for each case. If the agent crosses a boundary, do not compensate by trusting it more or writing a stronger prompt alone. Remove the unnecessary capability, tighten the tool or network boundary, or decline the connection. Retest after changing the configuration.

How should I store credentials and contain an agent?

Use a distinct, auditable identity and keep credentials out of prompts, ordinary configuration files, environment variables, and shell history where possible. Prefer short-lived credentials, a managed secret store, and just-in-time elevation; avoid handing an agent a personal administrator token or a long-lived secret.

  • Use a dedicated identity. It should have only the permissions required for its assigned task, so its actions can be distinguished from yours and its access can be removed separately.
  • Keep secrets out of agent-visible text. Do not paste a password or token into a prompt or a document the model can retrieve. Restrict access to secrets to the component that needs them.
  • Sandbox execution. Isolate the agent’s environment and limit filesystem access to necessary files. Restrict network egress to approved destinations rather than allowing unrestricted outbound connections.
  • Set operational limits. Use encryption, input sanitization, rate limits, and token and retry limits appropriate to the task. These reduce exposure and runaway behavior; they do not replace authorization controls.
  • Plan emergency revocation. Know how to revoke the agent’s credential and account grant, and how to reach the account provider if recovery is needed. Rehearse the process before relying on it.

A FIDO2 security key can strengthen authentication for the human account that administers access. It is one layer of defense: it does not restrict the agent’s OAuth scopes, tool calls, or access to data after authorization.

What should I log and monitor after granting access?

Record enough to reconstruct security-relevant activity without turning the audit log into another store of sensitive information. A useful record identifies which identity invoked which tool, the target and parameters, whether approval was given, and the result—while excluding credentials and unnecessary personal content.

Watch for meaningful changes

  • Unusual destinations or attempts to contact domains outside the allowlist.
  • Repeated denied operations, failed approval attempts, or retries that continue after a refusal.
  • Changes to granted scopes, identity, tools, plugins, or network rules.
  • Unexpected spikes in data volume or activity outside the task’s normal pattern.

Review access periodically and after material changes to the agent or its integrations. If you detect suspicious activity, revoke the relevant credentials and account grant, investigate the affected records and logs, and use the account provider’s recovery process. A response plan is useful only if you know who can carry it out and have tested the revocation path.

Is there a reliable way to know whether an AI agent is safe?

No checklist can establish that an agent will never make a mistake or be manipulated. The practical goal is to limit what it can reach and do, make consequential actions visible and interruptible, and ensure you can revoke access and respond if a boundary fails. Guidance from organizations including CISA, OWASP, OpenID Foundation, and Microsoft emphasizes controls such as least privilege, distinct identities, untrusted-input handling, and constrained autonomy—not a universal numerical estimate of risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does deleting an AI agent account automatically revoke its access to my connected accounts?

Not necessarily. The account grant or token may be managed separately from the agent’s profile, so check the connected-app or authorized-access controls at the account provider and revoke the grant there as well. If you cannot verify access has ended, contact the provider and rotate any credential the agent could have seen.

Will logging out of the agent revoke its access?

Logging out usually ends a user session, but it may not remove an authorization grant or invalidate every token. Treat session logout and permission revocation as separate actions, and verify the provider’s access-control page reflects the revocation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a separate email address for an AI agent?

A separate identity can improve attribution and limit the impact of mistakes, but an extra mailbox is not automatically a secure boundary. It still needs its own narrowly scoped permissions, credential protections, monitoring, and a revocation path.

Is a FIDO2 key enough to protect my account when an agent is connected?

No. It can make it harder for someone to authenticate as you, but it does not limit what an already-authorized agent can read or do. Review the agent’s permissions and action controls separately.
