Meta generated $115.800 billion of operating cash flow in 2025 and reported $43.585 billion of free cash flow (FCF) after $69.691 billion of property-and-equipment purchases and $2.524 billion of finance-lease principal payments. That cash conversion was substantial, but it does not mean all remaining cash was available for discretionary spending: Meta defines FCF as a non-GAAP measure and explicitly says it is not residual cash flow. The right evaluation therefore combines the GAAP cash-flow statement with lease-adjusted FCF, total infrastructure spending, other investments, liquidity, debt and forward returns from AI-enabled products. Meta does not disclose a standalone AI-capex amount, so any percentage assigned to AI would be an inference rather than a reported fact.
What did Meta report for cash flow and capital spending in 2025?
Meta’s 2026 Form 10-K provides the cleanest starting point because it shows the GAAP operating-cash figure and the components used in the company’s FCF reconciliation. The figures below are for the year ended December 31, 2025.

| 2025 item | Amount | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Net cash provided by operating activities | $115.800 billion | GAAP cash generated by operations; the starting point for an independent FCF calculation. |
| Purchases of property and equipment | $69.691 billion | Cash spent on owned servers, data centers, network infrastructure and related equipment. |
| Principal payments on finance leases | $2.524 billion | Lease-related principal cash outflow included in Meta’s FCF reconciliation. |
| Free cash flow | $43.585 billion | Meta’s non-GAAP measure after the two deductions above. |
| Capital expenditures including finance-lease principal | $72.22 billion | Rounded figure in Meta’s earnings release; it combines property-and-equipment purchases with finance-lease principal. |
The arithmetic is straightforward: $115.800 billion minus $69.691 billion minus $2.524 billion equals $43.585 billion. The earnings release rounds the combined capital-expenditure figure to $72.22 billion and FCF to $43.59 billion, so a small difference between the two presentations is rounding, not a different economic result.
How should you calculate Meta’s free cash flow?
Use both the company’s presentation and an independently reproducible reconciliation. Start with GAAP net cash provided by operating activities, then subtract the cash costs of building owned infrastructure and repaying finance-lease principal.

- Take operating cash flow: use $115.800 billion for 2025 from the consolidated statement of cash flows.
- Subtract property-and-equipment purchases: deduct $69.691 billion.
- Subtract finance-lease principal: deduct $2.524 billion when measuring cash left after the lease-funded portion of capital investment.
- Check the result against the reported measure: the reconciliation produces $43.585 billion, matching Meta’s disclosed FCF. The earnings release presents the same result as $43.59 billion after rounding.
This approach avoids treating depreciation, stock-based compensation or changes in working capital as if they were capital expenditures. Those items affect operating cash flow through GAAP accounting, while the capital-spending deduction captures the cash actually paid for property and equipment and finance-lease principal during the period.
Why show two capex views?
Meta’s 10-K shows property-and-equipment purchases and finance-lease principal separately, which makes the reconciliation transparent. The earnings release labels $72.22 billion as capital expenditures including finance-lease principal. Use the 10-K view when you need to reproduce FCF and the combined release figure when comparing management’s headline capex guidance with the amount that includes lease-funded equipment.
Is Meta’s free cash flow the same as cash available for any purpose?
No. Meta states in its filing that “FCF is not intended to represent our residual cash flow available for discretionary expenses.” It also warns that other companies may calculate FCF differently. The measure is useful for trend analysis, but it is not a GAAP subtotal and should not be treated as a promise that the entire balance can be returned to shareholders or spent on new projects.
Three checks keep the measure honest:
- Reconcile to GAAP operating cash flow. If a presentation cannot be bridged to the cash-flow statement, investigate the difference before relying on it.
- Keep lease treatment consistent. Comparing a period that excludes finance-lease principal with one that includes it will overstate the apparent change in cash generation.
- Read the investing and financing sections as well. FCF does not capture every cash decision. Equity investments, marketable-securities purchases, debt changes, repurchases and lease commitments can materially change liquidity even when FCF is positive.
How much of Meta’s capex is going to AI?
Meta identifies servers, data centers and network infrastructure as the main uses of property-and-equipment spending, and management says the 2026 program supports both AI efforts and the core business. The filings do not provide a standalone dollar amount or percentage for AI-only capex. Therefore, it is not possible to state, from the reported numbers, that a specific share of the $69.691 billion spent in 2025—or of the 2026 guidance—is exclusively for AI.

A disciplined analysis uses total infrastructure capex as the observable cash outflow and treats the AI allocation as an unreported mix. The investment case must then be tested through results that management does report: revenue growth, operating income, margins, cash conversion and the performance of products that use AI. A larger server or data-center budget is an input, not proof that AI spending is earning an adequate return.
What can be inferred without inventing an AI percentage?
- Higher capex increases the physical capacity available for training, inference, networking and other workloads, but the same facilities can support non-AI services.
- Management’s stated purpose—AI efforts and the core business—establishes direction, not a precise allocation.
- Returns should be judged over time by incremental revenue, operating-income contribution and the resulting cash flow, while allowing for depreciation and lease costs that arrive after the equipment is placed in service.
- Any article, model or spreadsheet that assigns an exact AI share should label it as an assumption and show sensitivity to that assumption.
What other investments consume Meta’s cash besides capex?
In 2025, Meta also used $18.33 billion for non-marketable equity investments and spent $10.05 billion on net purchases of marketable securities. These are cash uses, but they are economically different from building owned data-center capacity.
| Cash use | 2025 amount | Why it matters in analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Property-and-equipment purchases | $69.691 billion | Infrastructure and equipment spending deducted in the FCF calculation. |
| Finance-lease principal | $2.524 billion | Lease-funded capital cash outflow deducted in Meta’s FCF reconciliation. |
| Non-marketable equity investments | $18.33 billion | Investing cash use that is not included in the capex deduction. |
| Net marketable-securities purchases | $10.05 billion | Cash moved into liquid investments; this changes the composition of assets rather than creating operating capacity. |
Do not add the $18.33 billion and $10.05 billion mechanically to capex and call the sum “AI spending.” The filing does not say those investments were AI infrastructure, and their risk, liquidity and potential returns differ from servers or data centers. Include them in a broader uses-of-cash schedule instead.
Can Meta fund more than $100 billion of annual capex without taking on debt?
Meta’s reported resources provide substantial funding capacity, but the answer depends on the timing of cash generation, capital commitments and shareholder distributions. At December 31, 2025, Meta had $81.59 billion of cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities and $58.74 billion of long-term debt. The 10-K also disclosed approximately $103.77 billion of leases not yet commenced, mostly for data centers, colocations and network infrastructure, with starts scheduled from 2026 through 2030.

Those figures show why a simple “cash minus capex” calculation is incomplete. Cash and marketable securities can fund spending, while operating cash flow replenishes liquidity; debt and future lease starts represent claims on that liquidity. The disclosed lease commitments are not all 2026 cash payments, but they are economically relevant obligations that can become cash outflows as facilities begin.
| Funding factor | Reported position | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities | $81.59 billion at December 31, 2025 | Liquid resources available before considering future operating cash flow and uses. |
| Long-term debt | $58.74 billion at December 31, 2025 | Existing debt claim; do not treat gross liquidity as unencumbered cash. |
| Leases not yet commenced | Approximately $103.77 billion | Future lease commitments, mostly for data centers, colocations and network infrastructure, beginning from 2026 through 2030. |
| 2025 operating cash flow | $115.800 billion | Historical cash generation, not a guarantee of the next year’s result. |
Whether Meta can avoid additional borrowing is therefore a scenario question, not a conclusion established by the 2025 balance sheet. A model should project operating cash flow, capex, lease principal, other investing outflows, debt maturities and repurchases in the same periods. It should also test what happens if cash conversion weakens while data-center commitments proceed.

Meta initially said it expected approximately $115 billion to $135 billion of 2026 capital expenditures to support its AI efforts and core business. The company said available funds, operating cash flow and financing would cover its commitments, and its year-end release said operating income was expected to exceed 2025 despite the infrastructure step-up.
Associated Press later reported that Meta raised the range to $125 billion-$145 billion after the first quarter of 2026, citing component pricing and added data-center costs. Treat that later range as reported guidance, not as an achieved spending total. Guidance can change again as equipment prices, construction schedules and demand change.

| Scenario reference | Capex range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Initial 2026 company guidance | $115 billion-$135 billion | Base range announced for AI and core-business infrastructure. |
| Range reported after Q1 2026 | $125 billion-$145 billion | Higher scenario reported by Associated Press; attributed to component pricing and added data-center costs. |
For a planning model, run at least three cases: the lower end, midpoint and upper end of the current range. Keep finance-lease principal visible rather than silently folding it into owned-asset purchases. Then compare each case with operating cash flow and include the effect on FCF, liquidity and debt capacity.

| Operating cash-flow growth versus capex growth | Is cash generated by operations keeping pace with infrastructure spending? | Capex accelerates while operating cash flow is flat or declining. |
| FCF after finance-lease principal | How much cash remains after the lease-adjusted capital burden? | FCF compresses sharply even when reported revenue rises. |
| Revenue and operating-income growth from AI-enabled products | Are products using the new capacity contributing measurable economics? | Infrastructure costs rise without corresponding revenue or operating-income improvement. |
| Depreciation and lease obligations | How will newly deployed assets affect future expenses and fixed commitments? | Depreciation and lease charges rise faster than operating profit. |
| Liquidity, debt and repurchases | Is the company preserving funding flexibility? | Cash falls, debt rises or repurchases compete with infrastructure commitments. |
| Downside sensitivity | What happens if ad pricing, regulation or AI monetization disappoints? | The plan works only under uninterrupted growth and unchanged financing conditions. |
A quarterly update matters because a single annual number can hide a rapid change in spending or cash conversion. Associated Press reported second-quarter 2026 FCF of $784 million, down 91% from $8.55 billion a year earlier. That comparison demonstrates why an annual 2025 result should not be carried forward unchanged; refresh the model after each release.
How can you test whether Meta’s infrastructure spending is affordable?
Build a cash-bridge model that makes every major outflow explicit. The objective is not to forecast a precise share price; it is to identify the conditions under which the infrastructure plan remains self-funded or requires more financing.
Best Value
- Set the opening liquidity: enter cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities at the period start.
- Project operating cash flow: create conservative, base and optimistic cases rather than assuming the 2025 $115.800 billion repeats automatically.
- Enter owned-asset capex: model property-and-equipment purchases separately from finance-lease principal.
- Layer in other investing uses: include non-marketable equity investments and marketable-securities purchases when they are planned or observed.
- Add financing and shareholder returns: show debt issuance or repayment, lease starts and principal payments, and repurchases if disclosed for the period.
- Stress the drivers: reduce ad pricing or demand, delay AI monetization, raise component costs and increase data-center spending to the upper guidance case.
- Read the ending balance: evaluate liquidity, debt and lease obligations together. A positive FCF number does not by itself prove that every commitment is comfortably covered.
Keep assumptions visibly separate from reported facts. The reported capex ranges are scenarios supplied by management or reported by the Associated Press; an assumed AI revenue contribution or AI-capex percentage is an analyst input and should never be presented as a disclosed figure.
What are the most common mistakes when evaluating Meta’s FCF and AI spending?
- Using net income instead of operating cash flow: FCF should begin with GAAP net cash provided by operating activities, not an earnings figure.
- Omitting finance-lease principal: that omission makes the cash cost of infrastructure look smaller than Meta’s lease-adjusted presentation.
- Calling all capex “AI capex”: Meta says the program supports AI and the core business, and does not publish a standalone AI allocation.
- Ignoring non-capex investing outflows: the $18.33 billion of non-marketable equity investments and $10.05 billion of net marketable-securities purchases also changed cash in 2025.
- Subtracting debt from cash without timing: long-term debt and uncommenced leases are obligations, but their payment dates and terms matter to a period-by-period funding test.
- Treating guidance as actual spending: the 2026 ranges are plans that can move as component prices and data-center costs change.
- Relying on one quarter: the reported Q2 2026 FCF decline shows how quickly quarterly cash conversion can change.
What is the practical conclusion for investors?
Meta entered 2026 with strong historical cash generation and substantial liquid resources, but its infrastructure program is large enough that cash conversion must be monitored continuously. The reproducible 2025 measure is $43.585 billion of FCF after property-and-equipment purchases and finance-lease principal. The more important forward question is whether operating cash flow, revenue and operating income grow fast enough to absorb a capex range that was first stated at $115 billion-$135 billion and later reported at $125 billion-$145 billion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Meta’s earnings release show $72.22 billion of capex while the 10-K lists $69.691 billion of property-and-equipment purchases?
The earnings-release figure includes $2.524 billion of finance-lease principal, while the 10-K displays that lease payment separately from property-and-equipment purchases. The two presentations therefore describe the same lease-adjusted capital burden at different levels of detail, with rounding in the release.
Should finance leases be treated like debt when analyzing Meta’s AI build-out?
Treat them as contractual funding obligations in the cash model, even though they are not identical to a bond. Show lease principal, future lease starts and interest or other lease costs separately so the timing of the commitment remains visible.
How often should an investor refresh a Meta FCF model?
Refresh it after every earnings release because quarterly FCF, capex guidance, expenses, debt and lease commitments can move materially. Keep the prior guidance range beside the new one so you can see whether assumptions changed or only the timing did.
What would make Meta’s AI investment thesis look weaker?
The thesis weakens if infrastructure spending and lease commitments continue rising while operating cash flow, operating income or revenue from AI-enabled products fail to keep pace. Greater sensitivity to ad-pricing pressure, regulation or delayed AI monetization would also reduce funding flexibility.
