Evaluate an AI tool against a specific creative task—not its demo, reputation, or a generic ranking. Define what a good result looks like, compare candidates on the same work, inspect the outputs and editing they require, and check privacy, security, and rights before using real material. If you cannot verify the output or manage the risks, the tool may not be suitable for that job.
What should I evaluate an AI tool for?
Start with one defined activity and its intended outcome. “Help with my creative work” is too broad: generating mood-board concepts, editing a draft, producing a final illustration, and summarizing research have different standards for quality and different risks.

Write down the job in a sentence, including what the tool will receive and what you expect to use its output for. For example: “Turn this approved product brief into three draft taglines for internal discussion; a person will check every factual claim and choose or rewrite the final line.” That makes it possible to ask whether the tool helps with this step—not whether it is good at creativity in the abstract.
Also consider whether AI is useful at all. Government of Canada guidance cautions against using AI in every case and says its use should be limited to situations where risks can be managed. A manual process, existing software, or a human collaborator may be a better fit when the task depends on sensitive material, requires dependable factual accuracy, or leaves no room for meaningful review.

Describe the task and boundaries
- Input: What will you provide—an outline, reference image, unpublished draft, client brief, personal data, or something else?
- Output: What should the system return, and is it a draft, a source of ideas, or work intended for publication?
- Human role: Who will check, revise, approve, and take responsibility for the result?
- Limits: What must the output not do, such as invent facts, expose confidential material, imitate a restricted style, or change approved wording?
How do I define success before testing?
Choose a small set of criteria before opening a demo or trying candidates. The criteria should reflect the task: a tool for ideation may be judged on useful variety and how well ideas fit a brief, while a research assistant also needs careful fact-checking.
NIST describes holistic evaluation that includes model testing, red teaming, and user testing. UK government guidance recommends tailoring evaluation to the intervention and defining objectives. Neither source establishes a universal creative-work scorecard; the criteria below are a practical way to turn those principles into a comparison you can use.

| Criterion | What to inspect | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| Brief fit | Whether the result follows the audience, purpose, constraints, and requested format | Could I use or develop this for the job I described? |
| Quality and completeness | Whether important elements are present, coherent, and suitable for the intended use | What is missing, confusing, or unusable? |
| Factual reliability | Claims, names, figures, citations, and other details that can be checked | Which statements need verification, and do they hold up? |
| Originality and range | Whether ideas offer useful alternatives rather than near-duplicates or familiar clichés | Does this expand the options I would have considered? |
| Control and revisability | Whether you can reliably direct changes to tone, structure, composition, or other relevant features | Can I make a precise revision without losing what already works? |
| Human editing effort | The corrections, rewrites, checks, and cleanup needed before use | How much work remains after generation? |
| Workflow fit and time | Setup, handoffs, file handling, review time, and any saved time after corrections | Does it improve the whole task, not just produce output quickly? |
| Privacy, security, and rights | Data handling, access, permitted use, and relevant terms | Can I safely and appropriately use this input and output? |
Keep the list short enough to use consistently. Give each criterion a brief written definition so that “good quality” does not mean one thing for one candidate and something else for another. If you use a numerical rating, decide what each end of the scale means before testing. Treat the score as a record of your judgment, not as an official or statistically validated rating.
How can I compare tools fairly?
Give each candidate the same task briefs, source material, constraints, and review criteria. This makes differences easier to interpret and reduces the chance that a more favorable prompt or easier assignment determines the outcome. It is a practical way to operationalize model and user testing guidance, not a protocol mandated by NIST or UK guidance.

- Select representative tasks. Include ordinary work you do often and at least one difficult case: a tightly constrained brief, ambiguous request, unusual format, or input with details that must not be changed.
- Prepare equivalent inputs. Use the same approved brief and reference materials for each candidate. Record any differences in setup or instructions that cannot be made equivalent.
- Run the task and save the result. Keep the prompt, output, date, and relevant settings together so you can assess what happened rather than rely on memory.
- Review against the rubric. Mark what worked, what failed, what required verification, and what you had to change. A polished appearance is not evidence of accuracy or completeness.
- Record the work around the output. Note setup, waiting, checking, editing, and any rework. A fast first response may not save time if corrections are extensive.
- Compare the evidence, not the pitch. Look across the same tasks and criteria. Keep notable failures and edge cases visible rather than letting one impressive result define the decision.
For consequential or recurring uses, test with the people who will actually use or review the tool. NIST includes user testing in holistic evaluation; UK guidance also addresses baselines, changing interventions, differences across user groups, and public attitudes. A tool that suits one person or one type of assignment may not work as well for another.
How do I judge the output, not just the demo?
Inspect the complete result against the brief and the standards of the work it is meant to support. Generated content can sound confident or look finished while being inaccurate, incoherent, incomplete, or simply wrong for the project.
For writing and research
- Check claims, names, dates, numbers, quotations, and references against sources you trust. Do not treat generated material as an authority.
- Check whether the response answered the actual question, followed constraints, and included the important qualifications—not merely whether it reads smoothly.
- Look for invented supporting details, missing counterpoints, repetition, and language that changes the intended meaning.
- Track the edits needed to make the work accurate, appropriate, and recognizably suited to its audience.
For images and other visual work
- Compare the result with the brief and references: composition, subject, style direction, required elements, and details that must remain consistent.
- Inspect the full image, not only a thumbnail or appealing section, for artifacts, omissions, and unintended changes.
- Try a revision request that tests whether you can change one important feature while retaining the others you need.
- Decide whether the output is usable as-is, useful only as a draft, or less helpful than creating or editing it another way.
These are task-based checks, not proof that a tool will behave consistently on every future job. Keep examples of both successful and failed outputs so the decision reflects more than a single showcase result.
What should I check about privacy and security?
Check what happens to prompts and uploads before submitting personal, confidential, client-owned, or unpublished material. Privacy and security are part of a tool’s suitability, not afterthoughts to consider once a workflow is established.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) calls for due diligence on product suitability, testing, human oversight, privacy and security risks, and access to personal information. Government of Canada guidance also identifies privacy and security risks. The practical questions to resolve depend on the material and the provider’s current terms.
- Is the input personal, confidential, unpublished, or subject to an agreement or policy that limits where it can be shared?
- What do the provider’s current terms say about handling prompts, uploaded files, and personal information?
- Who can access the material, and what controls or safeguards are described?
- Can you test with a non-sensitive or approved sample instead of uploading the real work?
- Does your organization, client, or project require review or approval before using an external service?
If you cannot establish that a sensitive input may be used safely, do not upload it. Test the workflow with non-sensitive material, seek appropriate approval, or choose a different method. A promising output does not outweigh an unmanaged data risk.

Check both the tool provider’s terms and the law that applies to your work. A provider’s permission to use a service or output is not the same question as whether a particular work is protected by copyright or whether your intended use is allowed in your jurisdiction.
In a January 2025 summary of its report on copyrightability, the U.S. Copyright Office said copyright may protect AI-assisted outputs when a human author determines sufficient expressive elements, while mere prompting is not sufficient. The Office also said that AI assistance—or including AI-generated material in a larger human-authored work—does not by itself bar copyrightability. Register of Copyrights and Director Shira Perlmutter stated: “Where that creativity is expressed through the use of AI systems, it continues to enjoy protection.” This is the Office’s position in the U.S. context, not a universal legal rule or a substitute for advice about a particular work.

For a practical evaluation, identify how the output is intended to be used, review the provider’s terms for relevant restrictions or permissions, and keep a record of meaningful human decisions and revisions. If the project’s rights or licensing requirements are unclear, resolve that before relying on the output in a client deliverable or publication.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I decide which tool fits my workflow?
Choose based on the work you need done after generation as well as the generated result. A candidate can produce attractive drafts yet be a poor fit if it is difficult to revise, creates extensive checking work, or does not fit the way your project moves from brief to approval.
Compare candidates across the same criteria and tasks. Pay attention to trade-offs: a tool may provide more useful variety but require more selection and editing; another may offer tighter control but contribute less to early ideation. There is no defensible universal “best” tool without a current, task-specific comparison.
Use the findings to make a decision
- Adopt for a defined use when outputs meet your task’s requirements, review is manageable, workflow fit is acceptable, and relevant risks are controlled.
- Limit the use when the tool is helpful for one stage, such as brainstorming, but not dependable enough for final or fact-sensitive work.
- Run a narrower test when you have not yet tested a key edge case, checked a term that matters, or included the people who will use the output.
- Do not use it for that task when you cannot verify the result, cannot manage privacy or security risks, or the correction burden outweighs the benefit.
Write down the decision, intended use, known limitations, and who is responsible for review. That gives collaborators a practical boundary to follow and makes it easier to notice when the real workflow has drifted beyond what you evaluated.
Best Value
When should I evaluate the tool again?
Revisit the decision when the tool, its terms, your workflow, or the consequences of an error change. An earlier evaluation is evidence about the conditions you tested—not permanent proof of current suitability.
For recurring or higher-impact use, keep a baseline: representative tasks and examples that show what acceptable performance looks like. Recheck a sample of work over time, include relevant user groups, and watch for changes in output quality, editing effort, and the way the system handles edge cases. UK guidance specifically highlights baselines, evolving interventions, group differences, and public attitudes as evaluation considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AI-generated work commercially?
That depends on the provider’s current terms, the work, and the law that applies where you are using it. Check those terms and jurisdiction-specific requirements for the exact use; neither a tool’s output nor a general copyright summary settles every licensing or commercial-use question.
Should I use the same AI tool for writing and image generation?
Not necessarily. Each capability should be judged against its own task, inputs, quality requirements, review burden, and risks; success on one kind of work does not establish suitability for another.
What should I do if my team disagrees about whether an output is good enough?
Translate the disagreement into observable criteria tied to the brief, then have reviewers apply those criteria to the same examples. If an important standard remains subjective, document who has approval authority and what level of human revision is required before use.
