To evaluate an IT services company’s AI revenue claim, keep the statement in its original words, identify who made it and for which period, determine what customers actually paid for, then trace the figure to formal financial reporting. “AI revenue” may mean recognized revenue, bookings, annual recurring revenue, pipeline, usage, a run-rate estimate, or even internal cost savings—measures that are not interchangeable. Test the definition, calculation, scope, consistency and controls; compare it with the relevant segment and consolidated results; and keep forecasts separate from realized results. A disciplined review can show what a claim establishes, what remains unproven and which documents you need next.
What can “AI revenue” mean in an IT services company?
There is no universal, standardized AI-revenue definition for IT services companies. The label is useful only after the company explains the underlying activity, accounting treatment and measurement period. Preserve the company’s wording until its disclosures establish a more precise meaning.

| Label used by a company | What it may measure | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Amounts recorded for delivered goods or services under the company’s accounting policies. | That every dollar came from an AI product, or that the figure is comparable with another company’s differently defined revenue. |
| Bookings or new contract value | Signed orders or contract commitments, sometimes including work to be delivered in future periods. | Revenue recognized in the current quarter, cash collected, profitability or cancellation risk. |
| Remaining performance obligations | Contracted obligations that have not yet been recognized as revenue. | Current-period AI sales or the timing and margin of future recognition. |
| Pipeline | Potential opportunities at various stages of a sales process. | Signed contracts, customer payment or any realized revenue. |
| Annual recurring revenue (ARR) | A point-in-time annualized run rate for recurring contracts, if the company defines it that way. | GAAP or statutory revenue for a year, one-time services, usage variability or future retention. |
| Usage, adoption or customer counts | How many users, workloads, transactions or customers interact with an AI feature. | The price paid, contract value, recognized revenue or margin. |
| Run-rate estimate | Management’s extrapolation of current activity into a longer period. | A historical result; the assumptions may not hold. |
| Cost savings or productivity | Lower labor or delivery costs from internal automation. | Customer-paid revenue. Savings may affect margins or operating expenses without creating sales. |
When a speaker says “AI revenue,” record the exact noun and any qualifier. Replacing “pipeline” with “sales,” or “run rate” with “annual revenue,” upgrades the claim beyond the evidence.
How should you capture the original claim?
Start with an evidence record before interpreting the number. Copy the sentence exactly and attach the surrounding presentation, call transcript or release so qualifiers are not lost.

- Identify the speaker. Record the executive’s name, role, date and venue. A chief executive’s conference remark, an investor-slide footnote and a filing carry different levels of formal detail.
- Record the period and scope. Note the fiscal quarter or year, point-in-time date, currency, unit (thousands, millions or billions), segment, geography and denominator. A global annual figure cannot be compared directly with a regional quarterly figure.
- Mark the claim type. Classify the wording as revenue, bookings, ARR, remaining performance obligations, pipeline, usage, adoption, cost reduction or a forecast. Keep “historical,” “current run rate” and “expected” distinct.
- List the product or service named. Capture whether the statement refers to a separately sold AI offering, an AI feature in a broader contract, consulting work, cloud or infrastructure resale, or internal automation.
- Preserve definitions and omissions. If the company gives no definition, write “company-defined measure; methodology not stated” rather than inferring one. Note whether the statement excludes acquisitions, certain geographies, nonrecurring work or bundled contracts.
This record prevents a later summary from turning a qualified operating indicator into a claim of recognized customer revenue.
What business activity sits behind the AI label?
An AI claim becomes economically meaningful only when you can identify a customer-facing offering and the payment mechanism attached to it. Separate three situations that are often blended in presentations.
Separately sold AI service
Ask what the customer buys: a model-hosting service, implementation project, managed workflow, software subscription, usage-based API or another defined deliverable. Identify the contract price, billing trigger and delivery obligation. Determine whether the amount is reported in a distinct product line or folded into a broader services category.
AI feature bundled into a larger contract
A services agreement may include automation or model capabilities without a separate AI price. Ask how the company attributes any portion to AI, whether attribution is based on standalone prices or an internal allocation, and whether the same contract would have been sold without the feature. If no allocation method is disclosed, do not treat the entire contract as AI revenue.
Internal automation
Using models to write code, support employees or reduce delivery hours can lower costs or increase capacity. It is not customer revenue unless customers pay for a resulting product or service and the amount is recognized under the company’s accounting framework. A productivity percentage, head-count avoidance claim or internal pilot does not quantify AI-attributable sales.

The SEC Corporation Finance staff’s June 24, 2024 statement, “The State of Disclosure Review,” highlights the need to define AI, tailor discussion to actual or proposed uses and business impact, and have a reasonable basis for claims about AI prospects. Those are disclosure-review considerations, not a separate AI-revenue accounting rule.
Where can you verify an AI figure in company reporting?
For a U.S. public issuer, use primary documents in a consistent order. The absence of a figure from a filing is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the statement is false.
- Read the latest Form 10-K or Form 10-Q. Search for the exact KPI name, product name, “artificial intelligence,” “machine learning,” “generative,” “bookings,” “recurring” and “run rate.” Check the business description, revenue notes, segment footnotes, management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), risk factors and cash-flow statement.
- Check the earnings release and investor presentation. These may introduce a company-defined measure before a filing does. Capture footnotes, reconciliations and the page or slide where the definition appears.
- Review the earnings-call statement. Compare the spoken wording with the written materials. If a number appears only on a call or in promotional material, flag that difference and request the calculation and basis.
- Trace to segment and consolidated totals. Determine whether the claimed amount is included in a reported segment, eliminated between segments or outside the company’s revenue categories. Reconcile units, currency and period.
- Inspect costs and cash flow. Read gross and operating margin discussion, operating cash flow, capital spending and material delivery or infrastructure costs. Revenue growth without a path to cash generation may represent an expensive or low-margin service.
C3.ai’s Form 10-K for the year ended April 30, 2026 illustrates the kind of issuer document to inspect for business descriptions and revenue categories. It is an example of a source to examine, not evidence that another company’s claim is accurate.
How do you test a company-defined KPI?
A KPI is useful only when a reader can reproduce its boundary and understand why management uses it. Apply the same questions every time.
- Definition: What is included and excluded? Does “AI” require a separately priced product, any use of a model, a customer designation or management judgment?
- Formula: Is the amount a period total, average, point-in-time balance, annualized run rate, percentage or count? What data sources feed the calculation?
- Attribution: How is value assigned when AI is bundled with consulting, infrastructure, support or a larger software license?
- Scope: Which customers, geographies, currencies, segments, contracts and acquisitions are included?
- Usefulness: Why does management use the measure to run the business, allocate resources or assess performance?
- Consistency: Has the method changed because of an acquisition, new product, customer eligibility rule, foreign-exchange treatment or revised counting method? Restated history may be needed for a fair comparison.
- Controls: What systems, reconciliations, approvals or audit procedures support the data? A precise-looking number without control information deserves caution.
SEC guidance on MD&A metrics addresses definitions, calculation, usefulness, management use, changes and controls. Do not automatically call every operating KPI “non-GAAP”: classification depends on the measure’s nature and calculation. Regulation G and related SEC guidance become relevant when a measure is a covered non-GAAP financial measure.

How can you compare the claim with the company’s financial context?
Align like with like before calculating a growth rate or contribution percentage. Then test whether the AI activity is material to the business it purports to describe.
- Align the periods. Compare a quarterly claim with the same quarter’s reported revenue, not a full-year total. For a point-in-time ARR balance, use the comparable prior-date balance.
- Align the scope. Match segment, geography, currency and acquisition perimeter. Identify divestitures, one-time projects and changes in customer eligibility.
- Calculate contribution carefully. If an AI figure is recognized revenue, divide it only by the corresponding segment or consolidated revenue for the same period and definition. If it is bookings, do not present the ratio as a revenue share.
- Examine economics. Compare gross and operating margins where reported, operating cash flow, model or infrastructure spending, delivery labor and other material costs. A fast-growing narrow metric may still be immaterial or loss-making.
- Check conversion. Ask whether pilots become paid contracts, whether usage is billable, and whether pricing is subscription, usage-based, license or professional services. Customer counts alone do not answer those questions.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue status | Recognized revenue or another operating measure? | Determines whether the amount belongs in current-period financial results. |
| AI boundary | What products, features and allocations count? | Prevents unlike definitions from being ranked as if identical. |
| Payment model | Subscription, usage, license, project or bundled service? | Shows how adoption could convert—or fail to convert—into cash. |
| Period and scope | Which dates, segments, customers and geographies? | Controls the denominator and historical comparability. |
| Growth base | Growth against what aligned prior period? | Avoids impressive percentages from a tiny or changed base. |
| Profit and cash | What margins, operating cash flow and investment are associated? | Tests economic contribution rather than activity alone. |
| Disclosure quality | Is the definition specific, stable and reconciled? | Indicates how confidently an outside reader can reproduce the claim. |
When comparing two companies, disclose definition differences instead of producing a league table of unlike numbers. The sources do not establish a universal AI-revenue standard for IT services companies.
How should you evaluate an AI revenue forecast?
Treat every projection as a separate question from historical revenue. Record its horizon, assumptions and dependencies before judging plausibility.
Capture the forecast mechanics
- Time horizon: next quarter, fiscal year, multi-year target or an annualized current run rate.
- Customer adoption: number of customers, conversion from pilots, expansion and retention assumptions.
- Pricing: subscription rates, usage volumes, minimum commitments, discounts and expected mix.
- Delivery capacity: skilled staff, model availability, data access, implementation throughput and support.
- Technology and infrastructure: model performance, compute costs, suppliers and scaling requirements.
- External constraints: regulation, security approvals, procurement cycles and contract terms.
Test contrary evidence
Read risk factors, customer-concentration disclosures, cancellation or termination terms, delivery constraints, supplier dependencies, margin commentary and cash requirements. Compare optimistic statements with the company’s own uncertainty language. A forecast can have a reasonable basis without becoming a result; it should remain labeled as an expectation until the period closes and the company reports the outcome.
The SEC staff’s 2024 AI disclosure considerations specifically support asking whether claims about AI prospects have a reasonable basis and whether the company distinguishes actual use from proposed use. They do not validate an individual forecast.

What red flags indicate that an AI claim needs more evidence?
None of these signals proves misconduct. Each tells you to request a definition, reconciliation or underlying document.
- The headline says “AI revenue,” while the footnote says bookings, pipeline, ARR or run rate.
- The company gives a percentage but no numerator, denominator, period or currency.
- A customer or user count is presented as revenue without pricing or contract information.
- The AI boundary expands to include every project that uses a general software tool.
- The definition changes after an acquisition or a new product launch, with no comparable history.
- The figure appears in a conference presentation but not in the latest filing or release, and no methodology is provided.
- Management cites internal productivity or avoided hiring as if it were customer sales.
- Forecasts are stated as achievements, or a current run rate is described as a completed year.
- Growth is emphasized while segment revenue, margins, cash flow or delivery costs are omitted.
- Positive adoption claims are not accompanied by cancellation, concentration, capacity or regulatory risks.
What should you do when the company will not define the number?
Classify the statement as an unverified company-defined claim and narrow your conclusion. You can report that management stated a figure of a specified type on a specified date, but you cannot convert it into recognized AI revenue or compare it reliably with another issuer.
- Ask investor relations for the written definition, formula, source systems, period and scope.
- Request a bridge from the claimed measure to reported segment or consolidated revenue, including bundled-contract allocation.
- Ask whether prior periods were recalculated after any methodology change.
- Seek the related contract, pricing or customer information in a form the company is permitted to disclose.
- Recheck the next filing for reconciliation, controls and realized results.
If the company provides no answer, preserve the uncertainty in your description. Lack of disclosure is not proof that the claim is false, but it limits what a reader can independently verify.

Can a repeatable worksheet keep evaluations consistent?
Use one row for each claim and do not fill a cell with an assumption.
| Worksheet field | Entry to make |
|---|---|
| Exact statement | Verbatim wording, including qualifiers. |
| Speaker and source | Name, role, date, venue and document. |
| Claim category | Recognized revenue, bookings, ARR, pipeline, usage, savings or forecast. |
| Amount and units | Number, currency, scale and whether recurring or one-time. |
| Period and scope | Quarter, year or point-in-time; segment, geography and customer set. |
| Offering and payer | Customer-facing product, delivery obligation and who pays. |
| Attribution method | Separate price, allocation rule or not stated. |
| Primary reporting location | Filing section, note, release or presentation page. |
| Calculation and controls | Formula, inputs, reconciliations and control description. |
| Comparable base | Prior period and matching segment or consolidated denominator. |
| Economics | Margins, cash flow, delivery costs and investment. |
| Uncertainty | Assumptions, dependencies, risks and unresolved questions. |
| Conclusion | What the evidence establishes—and what it does not. |
How should the framework be adapted outside the United States?
The SEC materials are U.S.-focused. For an issuer governed by another jurisdiction, use the local filing regime, accounting standards, exchange rules and regulator guidance, while retaining the same logic: define the metric, identify the customer payment, trace it to formal reporting, test consistency and separate results from forecasts. Terminology such as “revenue,” “contract liability” or “non-GAAP” may have jurisdiction-specific meanings, so state the applicable framework and do not assume a U.S. disclosure requirement applies elsewhere.

Does the wider AI-return evidence change how you judge one company?
No single industry statistic can validate or disprove an issuer’s claim. The SEC Investor Advisory Committee’s December 4, 2025 recommendation attributed a result from MIT NANDA’s July 2025 report, The GenAI Divide: State of AI in Business in 2025, that 95% of organizations were getting zero return. That is a study-specific reported finding, not a universal conclusion about IT services companies and not evidence about any particular issuer. Use company-specific contracts, filings, economics and realized results instead.
What conclusion can the evidence support?
A strong evaluation does not force a yes-or-no verdict when the number is undefined. It states whether the company has shown recognized customer revenue, another clearly defined operating measure, internal savings or a forecast; identifies the products, customers, periods and geographies included; explains the bridge to reported financials; and records the assumptions and gaps that remain. That level of precision lets readers compare claims without mistaking marketing language for accounting results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Can a pilot or proof of concept be counted as AI revenue?
A pilot can contribute to revenue only if it is a paid customer deliverable recognized under the company’s accounting policies. An unpaid trial, announced deployment or user count is evidence of activity, not evidence of recognized revenue; ask for the contract, billing basis and reporting location.
Is annual recurring revenue the same as annual AI revenue?
No. ARR is generally a point-in-time annualized view of recurring commitments, while annual revenue is the amount recognized during a completed year. A company must state its ARR definition, treatment of usage and one-time work, and retention assumptions before the figure can be interpreted.
What should investors do if an AI metric appears only in a presentation?
Record it as a company-stated operating measure and look for a definition, calculation and reconciliation in filings or an earnings release. Until those are available, report the claim with its original label and avoid presenting it as audited or recognized revenue.
Does the 95% zero-return statistic show that an IT services company’s AI claim is false?
No. The figure is an attributed result from a specific MIT NANDA study and population, cited by a 2025 SEC Investor Advisory Committee recommendation. It cannot test an individual issuer; that requires company-specific contracts, financial reporting and realized performance.
