Evaluate an AI company by tracing a specific product and paying customer to repeatable revenue, sustainable unit economics, durable advantages, controlled risks and a valuation that does not require heroic assumptions. A high growth rate is useful only when customers keep paying, margins survive compute costs and the business converts sales into cash without unlimited infrastructure spending.
Start with the company’s filings, contracts and cash-flow statements rather than its forecast deck. Separate revenue directly generated by AI from indirect exposure, test renewals and expansion, map dependence on chips and cloud capacity, and model base, upside and downside cases. This process reveals whether “AI growth” is a business engine or a promotional label.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat exactly does the company sell, and who pays for it?
Write a one-sentence description before looking at the share price: “The company sells this product to this customer, charging this pricing unit for this contract term; the AI feature responsible for the purchase is this capability.” If you cannot complete that sentence from public disclosures, classify the investment thesis as low confidence.
Identify the paying unit
AI businesses may bill per seat, API token, inference request, image, completed workflow, device, data set, subscription, usage tier or outcome. A company reporting total users or model calls without identifying the paid unit leaves you unable to calculate retention, price realization or cost per unit. Record whether the charge is recurring, usage-based, a one-time license, a services engagement or a mixture.

Distinguish direct and indirect exposure
Direct exposure means the issuer recognizes revenue from an AI product or an AI-dependent service and describes the customer, pricing and delivery obligation. Indirect exposure includes selling hardware, data-center capacity, consulting or software that may benefit from AI spending but does not itself prove demand for the issuer’s AI feature. Keep these categories separate; indirect beneficiaries can prosper while a particular model or application loses money.
Check the contract and customer relationship
Look for contract length, termination rights, minimum commitments, implementation obligations and whether revenue is recognized over time or at delivery. Backlog and remaining performance obligations can indicate future work, but they are not the same as cash collected or a guaranteed renewal. Note the percentage of revenue from the largest customers and whether one customer can cancel, delay deployment or build an internal alternative.

Reconcile management’s narrative with the latest annual report, quarterly report, earnings release and material filings available through the SEC’s EDGAR system. The SEC, NASAA and FINRA’s 2024 investor alert recommends relying on underlying disclosures and warns that AI-generated summaries are not evidence.
Use a filing-to-claim reconciliation
- Copy the precise growth claim, period and currency from management’s presentation or call.
- Locate the corresponding revenue line, segment note, contract disclosure and accounting policy in the filing.
- Determine whether growth is organic, acquired, currency-driven, price-driven, usage-driven or caused by a change in reporting scope.
- Compare recognized revenue with billings, deferred revenue, backlog and remaining performance obligations where disclosed.
- Read the cash-flow statement: revenue that does not produce operating cash over time requires an explanation such as working-capital timing, long implementation cycles or customer financing.
Look for adoption evidence
Paid production deployments are stronger evidence than pilots, free users, demonstrations or model benchmarks. Seek the number of paying customers, deployment count, renewal rate, net revenue retention, expansion within existing accounts and the share of workloads that reach production. If management discloses only total usage, ask whether usage is subsidized, promotional or concentrated in a few accounts.
Test concentration and quality
A rapidly growing business can still be fragile if one customer, reseller or government contract drives the increase. Track the largest-customer percentages, receivables aging, contract assets and any unusual quarter-end deals. Sudden growth paired with rising receivables, generous payment terms or repeated “one-time” arrangements deserves a lower confidence rating until cash collection is demonstrated.
Which financial metrics matter most for an AI company?
Use the same definitions and periods for every issuer. Report both the company’s stated metric and your normalized calculation; companies often exclude different costs from “adjusted” measures.

| Area | Metric to examine | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue quality | Recurring versus transactional revenue, organic growth, backlog, remaining performance obligations, renewal rate and net revenue retention | Will demand repeat and expand after the initial sale? |
| Gross economics | Gross margin and contribution margin after compute, hosting, data licensing and usage-based fees | Does each additional unit create value after the costs that scale with usage? |
| Sales efficiency | Sales and marketing expense divided by new annualized recurring revenue or gross profit added | How much capital is required to acquire a durable customer? |
| Cash generation | Operating cash flow, free cash flow and conversion of operating income to cash | Can reported profit fund expansion without external financing? |
| Capital intensity | Capital expenditure, equipment purchases, leases and commitments for data-center or network capacity | How much reinvestment is required to support the forecast? |
| Ownership dilution | Stock-based compensation, diluted shares outstanding, option overhang and new issuance | Does per-share value grow, or is growth being shared with an expanding share count? |
| Operating leverage | Research, infrastructure and administrative costs as a percentage of revenue | Can margins improve when growth normalizes? |
Gross margin is not enough
Cloud and model-inference charges may sit in cost of revenue, research expense or a separate line. Recast the economics to include every cost that rises with AI usage, including accelerator rentals, electricity passed through by a hosting partner, data royalties and human review. A high reported gross margin can conceal a weak contribution margin if variable costs are classified elsewhere.

Free cash flow needs context
Free cash flow is commonly operating cash flow minus capital expenditure, but companies differ in presentation. Read the reconciliation and include finance leases or long-term capacity commitments when they function like infrastructure purchases. A temporary working-capital release can make one quarter look cash-generative even while the business is spending heavily on equipment and prepaid capacity.
Account for dilution
Stock-based compensation is a real economic cost to existing owners even when it does not reduce current-period cash. Compare free cash flow per diluted share, not only total free cash flow, and track how the share count changes after acquisitions, employee grants or convertible financing.
How do you measure AI unit economics?
Choose a disclosed paid unit or customer cohort and calculate economics at that level. Total model calls or aggregate tokens do not show efficiency because they can rise while prices fall, usage is subsidized or low-value workloads replace profitable ones.

- Start with the price actually collected per paid unit, net of discounts, credits and refunds.
- Subtract model-inference or compute cost, hosting, bandwidth, data licenses, human quality review and payment fees attributable to that unit.
- Calculate contribution profit and contribution margin before corporate overhead.
- Compare the result across customer tiers, model versions, regions and contract types.
- Track whether optimization, batching, caching or hardware changes reduce cost faster than prices decline.
For subscription products, divide annualized recurring revenue by active paid accounts and compare expansion with support and compute consumption. For usage products, monitor volume, realized price, variable cost and gross profit per unit together. If the issuer does not disclose enough data to perform this calculation, state that the economics are unverified rather than inferring them from company-wide margins.
Test payback and retention
Customer-acquisition payback should be measured in gross profit, not revenue. Pair the payback period with logo retention and net revenue retention: a short payback built on customers that churn after a trial is not durable. Cohort data is especially valuable because it shows whether older customers consume more, less or the same amount over time.
What makes an AI company difficult to displace?
Competitive durability comes from several reinforcing advantages, not from calling a model “proprietary.” Examine each source separately and ask how quickly a well-funded rival or the customer itself could reproduce it.
Switching costs and workflow integration
Deep integration with identity, permissions, records, compliance processes and employee workflows can make replacement costly. Verify that customers actually use these integrations in production and that contracts, data formats or retraining requirements create a practical switching barrier.

Data and feedback loops
Proprietary data matters only when the company has legal rights to use it, can keep it current and converts it into better outcomes. Ask whether customers can export their data, whether privacy restrictions limit training and whether competitors can obtain comparable public or licensed data.
Distribution and ecosystem
Embedded distribution through an existing enterprise channel, developer ecosystem or hardware footprint can lower acquisition costs. Measure the economic share retained by partners and the risk that a platform owner changes ranking, fees or access.
Technology and talent
Patents, specialized infrastructure and scarce engineering talent may help, but advantages decay when open-source models improve. The OECD’s 2026 analysis of AI markets describes improving foundation-model performance alongside declining prices, while noting structural concentration in compute, data, skills, chips and cloud. Treat a technical lead as time-limited unless customers’ workflows and economics reinforce it.
How exposed is the business to concentrated suppliers and customers?
Map every critical dependency: accelerators, networking equipment, cloud capacity, electricity, data licenses, model providers, specialized employees, distributors and a few major customers. Record the supplier’s share, contract term, replacement time, pricing power and whether the company has committed minimum purchases.
Stress supply and pricing
Model a period in which compute prices rise, capacity is rationed or a strategic supplier prioritizes larger buyers. Then model the opposite: cheaper models and abundant capacity push the company to cut prices. A durable business should retain customers and positive contribution economics in both directions.
Consider customer insourcing
Large customers may train or deploy models internally when usage becomes material. Compare the customer’s cost of building, buying and operating an alternative with the vendor’s price, reliability, compliance and speed. A vendor can remain valuable even after customers insource some workloads, but the surviving use case must be identified explicitly.
Include macro and policy shocks
Test a customer capital-expenditure pullback, export restrictions, privacy rules, copyright litigation, cybersecurity incidents and energy constraints. The relevant question is not whether a risk is possible; it is how quickly revenue, margins, cash flow and contract renewals would respond.

What governance and safety evidence should investors demand?
Governance is an economic issue because an incident can halt deployments, trigger claims and destroy trust. The GAO’s 2026 framework organizes AI competitiveness around Science & Technology, Human Capital, Governance and Economy; use those four pillars as a checklist rather than treating model accuracy as the whole risk assessment.
Board and management oversight
- Identify the board committee responsible for AI, cybersecurity, privacy and model risk.
- Check whether management reports testing results, incidents, remediation and escalation thresholds to the board.
- Look for clear accountability when a model is retrained, released, suspended or withdrawn.
Testing and monitoring
Seek documented evaluation for accuracy, bias, robustness, abuse, data leakage and performance drift. Production monitoring should measure failures and near misses, not just average benchmark scores. Ask whether customers can audit logs and whether the company discloses material incidents promptly.
Privacy, security and legal exposure
Review data-use permissions, retention, encryption, access controls, third-party model terms and incident-response procedures. Search filings for litigation, regulatory inquiries, indemnities and limitations of liability. A business that cannot explain who owns prompts, outputs and training data has an unresolved commercial risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you value an AI company without a universal multiple?
No universally valid AI growth threshold, valuation multiple or margin benchmark exists. Calculate what the current price implies about revenue, margins, reinvestment and risk for this issuer, period and scenario.
Build three operating cases
| Case | Demand assumptions | Economics assumptions | Risk questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downside | Slower production adoption, higher churn or customer capex cuts | Lower realized price, compute inflation, delayed operating leverage and sustained dilution | Can the balance sheet fund commitments without emergency issuance? |
| Base | Renewals and expansion follow disclosed cohort evidence | Contribution margin improves at a measured rate while capex remains necessary | Which assumptions are directly supported by filings? |
| Upside | New use cases, stronger expansion and successful distribution | Optimization lowers variable cost faster than prices fall | What evidence would confirm this case, and when? |
For each case, project revenue by product or segment, gross and contribution margin, operating expenses, capital expenditure, operating cash flow, free cash flow and diluted shares. Discount or otherwise compare those cash flows using a risk treatment appropriate to your method, then perform sensitivity tests on price, retention, compute cost, capex and dilution. The objective is not a precise target price; it is to discover which assumptions carry the valuation and whether they are observable.
Write disconfirming evidence before acting
List the facts that would prove your thesis wrong: falling net retention, a failed production deployment, a supplier outage, rising receivables, negative contribution margin, a customer building internally or a governance incident. Set a review trigger and a date for checking each item. This prevents a forecast from becoming an unfalsifiable story.
What is a practical step-by-step diligence workflow?
Use this sequence for each company and preserve the source, date and definition of every figure.

- Normalize economics: include compute, hosting, data, human review, leases, capital expenditure and stock-based compensation.
- Calculate a unit or cohort: use a disclosed workload, subscription or customer cohort; mark unavailable inputs as unverified.
- Map dependencies: document chips, cloud, energy, data, talent, partners and replacement options.
- Test durability: compare cheaper or open models, customer insourcing, switching costs, distribution and legal rights to data.
- Review controls: assess board oversight, testing, monitoring, privacy, cybersecurity, incident disclosure and auditability.
- Model valuation: build downside, base and upside cases and compare their implied assumptions with the current price.
- Record disconfirming evidence: specify what would change your conclusion and when you will recheck it.
How do you avoid AI investment hype and fraud?
The 2024 SEC, NASAA and FINRA investor alert warns that promoters may use AI buzzwords, promises of quick profits, guaranteed returns, fake news, social-media campaigns and deepfakes. “Do not rely solely on AI-generated information in making investment decisions.” Verify the issuer, registration where relevant, filings and the original source of every material claim.
- Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, secret algorithms and urgency to invest.
- Confirm that a named customer, contract or partnership appears in an authoritative filing or in a statement the customer itself made.
- Check whether an “AI revenue” figure is a segment total, an estimate, a bookings figure or recognized revenue.
- Do not treat a chatbot summary, back-tested chart or synthetic endorsement as independent evidence.
- Keep a dated record of assumptions so later promotional material cannot silently rewrite the thesis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a company benefit from AI without reporting an AI segment?
Yes. A software, hardware or services issuer may gain demand from customers’ AI projects without separately identifying that revenue. Treat the exposure as indirect until product-level disclosures, customer evidence and unit economics connect the demand to the issuer.
What does net revenue retention reveal that customer count misses?
Net revenue retention tracks spending by an existing customer cohort after upgrades, downgrades and cancellations. It can expose shrinking usage even when the company is adding many new logos, or expansion that makes renewals economically valuable.
How should I treat an AI company that is still loss-making?
Losses can be rational during infrastructure build-out, but require a credible path from contribution profit to operating cash flow. Examine liquidity, contractual capacity commitments, dilution and the amount of spending needed before the forecast becomes self-funding.
Is open-source competition automatically bad for an AI vendor?
Not necessarily. Falling model prices can expand demand, while a vendor may retain value through workflow integration, reliability, compliance, data rights or distribution. Test whether those services remain differentiated after the underlying model becomes cheaper.
