The cost of one AI request is the sum of every billable token and metered operation used to complete it. For a token-priced API, multiply input, cached-input and output tokens by the model’s current per-token rates, then add tool or media charges. For a self-hosted model, add the request’s share of servers, hosting, software and operations, allocated across the volume the deployment can actually serve at its required latency. The reliable method is to define what “one request” means, measure real usage, apply the exact rate card and validate the result against production workloads.
What does “cost per AI request” include?
“Request” can describe one API call, one user-visible answer or an entire workflow. Those are different cost units. A chat turn might call a model several times, retrieve documents, invoke a server-side tool and make a final model call. If you are budgeting the user experience, count every call and metered operation in that workflow rather than only the first API request.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Model usage: input, cached input, output and, where billed separately, reasoning tokens.
- Tools and media: search, code execution, image generation, audio processing or other metered operations.
- Infrastructure: relevant when you operate the serving stack yourself, including hardware, hosting, software and operations.
Providers use different billing definitions. Some charge by token, some by compute time and some expose a request-level amount that already includes server-side tools. Read the billing definition before comparing two figures.
How do I calculate a token-priced API request?
Use the provider’s token categories and rates for the exact model. When the rate card is expressed per million tokens, divide each token count by 1,000,000 before multiplying.

Include only categories the provider reports. Add separate terms for tools, images, audio or other charges.
1. Define the unit you are pricing
Write down whether your unit is an API call, a completed user interaction or a complete business task. For a multi-step assistant, sum every model call and metered tool invocation associated with that task. This prevents an apparently cheap first call from hiding the rest of the workflow.
2. Measure each token category
For production estimates, use the usage object returned with real responses. For forecasting, run representative prompts through a tokenizer for the exact model and estimate output from observed tasks. Input and output lengths should reflect the actual system prompt, conversation history, retrieved context and requested answer length.
Token count is not word count. The OpenAI Help Center states: “A token count is not the same as a word count.” Model, encoding, language, code, formatting and punctuation all affect tokenization. A rough English planning heuristic is about four characters per token or three-quarters of a word, but it is not an accounting substitute. Reasoning tokens can also be billable even when they are not visible in the final response.
3. Keep cached input separate
Some services discount a repeated prefix or other cached context. Put cached tokens in their own term rather than applying the regular input price to all input. If the provider does not report cached usage, do not assume a discount.
4. Apply the exact rate card
Use the model name, account type, region and billing unit that apply to your deployment. Preserve whether a figure is a list price, an Enterprise contract rate, a promotion or a negotiated amount. Pricing can change, so record the rate-card date alongside your estimate.

Worked API example
Suppose one completed interaction uses 2,400 regular input tokens, 1,000 cached-input tokens and 600 output tokens. Applying the GPT-6 Sol Enterprise figures listed below gives:
(2,400 × $2.00 + 1,000 × $0.20 + 600 × $10.00) / 1,000,000
= ($4,800 + $200 + $6,000) / 1,000,000
= $0.011
That is $0.011 for the model portion of this example interaction. Any search, code, image or audio charge would be added separately. If the interaction made three model calls, calculate each call and add them; do not multiply a single-call estimate unless the calls truly have the same usage.
What are the current token prices in the cited Enterprise rate card?
The following figures are from the OpenAI Enterprise token-based rate card accessed October 26, 2026. They are not universal API or consumer-plan prices. Check the rate card and your contract before budgeting.
| Model | Input per 1M tokens | Cached input per 1M | Output per 1M |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Sol | $2.00 | $0.20 | $10.00 |
| GPT-6 Pro (GPT-6 Astra) | $10.00 | $1.00 | $50.00 |
| GPT-5.6 Sol | $4.00 | $0.40 | $20.00 |
Because output rates are higher than input rates in this table, long answers can dominate the total even when prompts are large. A model switch can change the result in both directions: a lower token rate may produce more tokens or require additional calls to complete the same task.
How should I price tools, reasoning and complete workflows?
Start with the provider’s own usage and cost fields. xAI’s cost-tracking documentation, for example, describes a response-level cost that can include token usage and server-side tool invocations; its value is converted from ticks to U.S. dollars. A provider-reported amount is useful only when you know exactly what it includes.
- Reasoning: determine whether hidden or reasoning tokens are billed and whether they appear in input, output or a separate category.
- Retrieval and search: include each metered lookup, embedding, reranking or external search call.
- Code execution: include execution time or per-run charges in addition to the model tokens that requested it.
- Images and audio: price generation, transcription or synthesis using the media unit, not a text-token approximation.
- Retries and failures: count tokens consumed by failed, timed-out or retried calls if the provider bills them.
For annual planning, the Association for Computational Linguistics gives the general token-based expression C = (p_i × n_i + p_o × n_o) × R, where input and output prices and tokens per request are multiplied by annual request volume. Extend that expression with cached tokens and tool terms when they apply.

How do I estimate the cost of a self-hosted model?
Self-hosting replaces a provider’s token bill with a combination of variable compute and allocated fixed costs. First size the deployment for peak requests per second, concurrency and a latency target. Then spread annualized costs over the requests the system can realistically serve, not a theoretical maximum.
infrastructure_cost_per_request
= annualized_deployment_cost / annual_requests_served
estimated_total_cost_per_request
= variable_model_or_compute_cost_per_request
+ infrastructure_cost_per_request
Include the full annualized deployment cost
- Server acquisition: amortize the purchase price over its useful life.
- Hosting: colocation, cloud rental, power, networking and storage.
- Software: serving software, support contracts, monitoring and licenses.
- Operations: administration, maintenance, replacements and other costs your organization chooses to allocate.
NVIDIA’s 2025 illustrative example assumes a $320,000 server with eight GPUs, four-year depreciation, $3,000 annual hosting and $4,500 annual software licensing. Those are example assumptions, not current market quotes. Under those assumptions, the annual fixed amount per server is $80,000 depreciation plus $3,000 hosting plus $4,500 software, or $87,500 before variable costs. Divide that amount by the requests actually served by the server during the year. If a hypothetical deployment served 10 million equivalent requests, the fixed allocation would be $0.00875 per request; changing the served volume changes the unit cost without changing the hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse measured throughput, not the GPU specification
Benchmark the exact model, quantization, prompt lengths, output lengths, batching and concurrency you expect. Record time to first token, completion latency and sustained throughput. A server that handles a high rate in a laboratory test may fail your service-level target at peak load, forcing additional instances and raising the cost per request.
Capacity planning should cover the busiest period you must support. A deployment provisioned for peaks but lightly used can have a much higher cost per request than a continuously saturated server. Conversely, an overloaded server may appear cheap on paper while violating latency requirements.
How does compute-time billing differ from token billing?
Some hosted inference services charge for time on a machine rather than for tokens. Hugging Face’s documentation gives an illustrative example in which a request takes 10 seconds on a GPU machine priced at $0.00012 per second, producing a compute charge of $0.0012. The example explains the billing method; it is not a universal rate.
compute_request_cost = seconds_used × price_per_second
With time-based billing, longer generation, queueing rules and hardware selection affect cost even if token counts are similar. With token billing, a request that generates more tokens costs more even if it runs on the same hardware. Compare both on the same completed task and include the latency and throughput conditions.

How should I compare an API with self-hosting?
Compare equivalent useful work rather than headline prices. The right option depends on workload shape, performance requirements, utilization and operational capacity.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Billing basis | Are you paying per input/output category, compute second or a provider-reported request amount that includes tools? |
| Representative workload | What are the typical input and output lengths, cached share, reasoning usage and number of calls per user task? |
| Latency and capacity | What peak requests per second, concurrency, time-to-first-token and completion targets must be met? |
| Utilization | How many requests will actually be served, and how much idle capacity is required for peaks and failures? |
| Task performance | Does one option complete the same task with fewer retries, shorter answers or fewer tool calls? |
| Operations | Who pays for upgrades, monitoring, security, maintenance and incident response? |
Stanford’s 2025 AI Index reports inference-cost prices as a 3:1 weighted average of input and output token prices. That weighting is useful for a broad comparison, but it is not a universal application formula. Your own input/output mix should drive a request estimate.
What is a reliable step-by-step estimation workflow?
- Choose the cost unit. Define one API call, one user interaction or one completed workflow, and list every call and tool inside it.
- Collect representative traces. Sample normal, short, long and peak-load tasks. Capture input, cached-input, output and reasoning usage where available.
- Tokenize forecasts. Use the exact model tokenizer for prompts and retrieved context; estimate output from observed completions rather than word-count guesses.
- Load the rate card. Record model, account, region, currency, date and whether prices are recurring list rates, contract rates or discounts.
- Calculate each call. Apply the token equation, then add media, tool, retry and orchestration charges.
- Model self-hosting separately. Benchmark throughput and latency at required concurrency, annualize servers and software, and divide by realistic served volume.
- Validate in production. Compare forecast and actual usage weekly or monthly, investigate drift and update rates when the provider changes pricing.
What mistakes make AI request estimates inaccurate?
Using words as a proxy for tokens
Different languages, code and formatting can produce very different token counts. Use tokenizer output for the model you will run.
Ignoring conversation history
Many chat APIs resend prior turns and system instructions on every call. Measure the full serialized prompt, not only the newest user message.
Applying one rate to all tokens
Input, cached input and output often have separate prices. Keep those categories distinct and check whether reasoning is billed.
Pricing only the successful final call
Retries, moderation passes, retrieval steps and tool calls can multiply the cost of one user-visible answer. Define the workflow boundary first.
Best Value
Dividing hardware cost by theoretical capacity
Use sustained throughput at your latency target and peak concurrency. Idle capacity, failover and headroom are real costs.
Comparing unlike tasks
A low price per million tokens does not prove a lower cost for the same outcome. Compare the tokens, calls, latency and quality needed to complete an equivalent task.
How do I monitor and update the estimate?
Store request-level usage with a timestamp, model identifier, account or project, latency, status and tool events. Reconcile the calculated amount with any provider-reported cost field and document differences in billing definitions. For self-hosted systems, record GPU or server hours, queue time, throughput and the number of completed tasks.
Set separate dashboards for average, median and high-percentile cost. A small number of long-context or tool-heavy requests can dominate spending while the average looks stable. Recalculate when prompts, retrieval settings, model versions, output limits, traffic mix or pricing change.
What is the practical takeaway?
For an API, count the actual billable categories and multiply them by the current rates; for self-hosting, add an allocation of annual infrastructure to measured variable compute. The estimate is credible only when it represents the complete task, uses realistic tokenization and throughput, and carries the provider’s billing definitions and date with every number.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I estimate AI cost before I have production traffic?
Create a small workload set covering short, typical and worst-case prompts, then run it through the exact model tokenizer and API. Multiply the measured token distributions by the current rate card and report a range or percentile rather than a single average.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should cached tokens be counted as free?
No. Cached input may be discounted, but it is usually still a billable category. Track cached and uncached tokens separately and use the provider’s published cached-input rate.
Does a longer response always cost more than a longer prompt?
Not necessarily. It depends on the model’s input and output rates and the token counts. In the Enterprise figures shown here, output is priced higher, so additional output tokens have a larger effect than the same number of regular input tokens.
How often should an AI request cost model be updated?
Recheck it whenever the provider changes prices, model versions, context handling or tool billing, and whenever your prompts or traffic mix change. A scheduled monthly reconciliation against invoices or provider usage data catches drift early.
