Estimate an LLM app bill by separating input and output tokens, multiplying each by the selected model’s per-million-token rate, then adding caching, tools, retrieval, modalities, cloud charges and your own infrastructure. Build the estimate at three levels—per request, per active user and per month—and publish low, expected and high scenarios. Until production telemetry replaces assumptions, a range is more reliable than one headline number.

What exactly are you estimating?

An “LLM cost” can mean several different things. A useful model distinguishes the variable charge for inference from the operating cost of the whole application.

  • Per request: the cost of one model call, including its prompt, generated answer, cache activity and any tools it invokes.
  • Per active user: the expected number of requests from one user multiplied by the token and feature mix of those requests.
  • Per month: the sum of all model calls during the billing period, plus hosting, databases, retrieval, monitoring, support and fixed platform fees.

Keep these units separate. A low per-request price can still produce a large monthly bill when a user sends many messages, while a high token price may have little impact if the feature is rarely used.

How do token charges work?

Providers normally meter prompt tokens and generated tokens separately. Prompt tokens include system instructions, conversation history, retrieved passages and tool results that you send to the model. Output tokens are the model’s response and may be priced several times higher than input tokens.

Convert each volume to millions before applying the rate:

Monthly model cost = (input_tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input_rate) + (output_tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output_rate) + cache charges + tool and modality charges

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then calculate the application total:

Monthly app cost = monthly model cost + hosting + storage/retrieval + monitoring + other fixed or variable operating costs

Do not combine input and output tokens into one average unless you have already weighted that average by the actual rates. An output-heavy workload can cost much more than a prompt-heavy workload with the same total token count.

Which rates should you put in the calculator?

Record the model name, context-length tier, currency, geography, billing channel and the date you accessed the rate card. Providers change prices, discounts and eligible features; an estimate without those fields is difficult to audit later.

Rate or rule Evidence and qualification How it affects the estimate
GPT-6 Luna standard input $0.05 per 1 million tokens on OpenAI’s 2026 pricing page Multiply uncached prompt tokens by 0.05 when this model and standard tier apply.
GPT-6 Luna standard output $0.25 per 1 million tokens on the same 2026 pricing page Multiply generated tokens by 0.25; output is five times the listed input rate.
GPT-6 Luna cached input $0.005 per 1 million tokens on the 2026 pricing page Apply only to tokens that meet the provider’s cache rules; do not classify every repeated phrase as cached.
Web search $10 per 1,000 calls on OpenAI’s 2026 pricing page Add a call charge independently of the tokens used to formulate the search or answer.
File-search storage $0.10 per GB per day after the stated free allowance on OpenAI’s 2026 pricing page Estimate stored gigabytes and the number of billable days, not just query volume.
Anthropic Batch API Anthropic states that batch input and output tokens receive a 50% discount. Use batch rates only for eligible asynchronous work; interactive requests generally need the standard path.
US-only inference Anthropic documents a 1.1× multiplier for US-only inference on supported newer Claude models. Multiply the applicable model charges by 1.1 when that data-residency option is selected.

The Society of Actuaries’ 2025 illustrative table is useful for historical comparison, not for a current quote. It listed the following per-million-token input/output figures:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Model in the 2025 table Input Output
GPT-4o $5 $15
GPT-4o mini $0.15 $0.60
Claude Opus 3 $15 $75
Claude Sonnet 3.5 $3 $15
Gemini 1.5 Pro $3.50 $10.50
Gemini 1.5 Flash $0.075 $0.30

Those figures describe the market at the time of that 2025 report. Use the current first-party rate card for a purchasing decision, and label any historical table with its date so it is not mistaken for a live price.

How do you calculate a per-request cost?

Start with a representative request rather than a best-case prompt. Include the system message, conversation history, retrieved text and tool responses that are actually sent to the model.

  1. Measure input tokens. Count the full request payload, not just the user’s latest sentence.
  2. Measure output tokens. Use the model’s generated-token count, including structured fields if your API returns them.
  3. Apply separate rates. Divide each token count by 1,000,000 and multiply by its own rate.
  4. Add feature charges. Include cache writes or reads, search calls, file-search storage, containers, image or audio processing and any priority or regional multiplier.
  5. Record the result with its assumptions. Save the model, tier, date and workload category alongside the number.

For an illustrative rate card of $1 per 1 million input tokens and $5 per 1 million output tokens, a request containing 1,800 input tokens and 450 output tokens costs:

(1,800 ÷ 1,000,000 × $1) + (450 ÷ 1,000,000 × $5) = $0.0018 + $0.00225 = $0.00405

This is only the model subtotal. A request that performs a web search, retrieves documents or runs code has additional charges.

How do you turn request cost into a per-user estimate?

Define a workload for each user segment. Power users, casual users and internal staff often have very different request counts and prompt sizes.

  1. Choose the number of requests per user per billing month.
  2. Estimate average input and output tokens for that request type.
  3. Multiply requests by tokens to obtain monthly input and output tokens per user.
  4. Apply the model rates and add the average cost of tools, retrieval and other features used by that segment.

For example, 100 requests per user, each with 3,000 input tokens and 700 output tokens, equals 300,000 input tokens and 70,000 output tokens per user per month. At rates of $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, the model portion is $0.30 + $0.35, or $0.65 per user before infrastructure and feature charges.

Multiply that result by the number of paying or active users, not automatically by registered accounts. If only 20% of registered accounts use the feature in a month, the active-user count is the relevant demand driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you calculate the monthly bill?

Build a volume forecast from product behavior, then replace it with telemetry. A simple monthly worksheet should contain one row for every model or feature path.

Workload Monthly requests Input tokens/request Output tokens/request Input rate Output rate
Chat Use your forecast or measured count Include history and retrieved context Include the complete generated response Selected model’s rate Selected model’s rate
Summarization Documents processed per month Source text and instructions Summary length limit Selected model’s rate Selected model’s rate
Background classification Items in the queue Record plus policy prompt Usually short labels or JSON Batch or standard rate Batch or standard rate

For each row, calculate total input tokens as requests multiplied by input tokens per request, and do the same for output. Sum the rows only after applying their individual rates and feature charges.

The available data’s worked template illustrates the arithmetic: 2,000,000 monthly input tokens at $1 per million cost $2, while 500,000 output tokens at $5 per million cost $2.50. The model subtotal is therefore $4.50. Replace those illustrative rates with the exact model and context tier you plan to use.

How should you model caching, retrieval and tools?

These features can change the effective cost even when the visible answer is short. Keep them as separate line items so a change in feature usage does not disappear inside an average token rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Cost driver What to measure Estimation treatment
Cached input Tokens served from an eligible cached prefix and cache-write tokens Apply the provider’s cached-input and cache-write rates; calculate hit rate from logs rather than assuming every repeated prefix qualifies.
Web search Search calls per request and calls per month Multiply calls by the per-1,000-call price, then include any model tokens generated from the results.
File search or retrieval Stored gigabytes, storage days, queries and retrieved-token volume Include storage after the free allowance, query or tool fees where listed, and the retrieved text sent to the model.
Code containers Container starts, execution time or provider-defined sessions Use the provider’s container meter separately from inference tokens.
Images and audio Images generated or analyzed, audio minutes, transcription tokens or characters Use the modality’s own unit and rate; do not convert it into text-token cost unless the provider explicitly does so.
Regional or priority processing Requests routed to a restricted geography or latency tier Apply the documented multiplier to the affected calls only.

Long retrieved documents are a common hidden cost. Measure the tokens that arrive after chunk selection, not the number of documents in the index. A retrieval system can have inexpensive storage but expensive inference if it routinely sends oversized context.

How do you build low, expected and high scenarios?

Use scenarios instead of one forecast until real usage exists. Change the assumptions that have the greatest uncertainty: active users, requests per user, prompt length, output length, tool-call rate and retry rate.

Scenario Typical assumptions to vary Purpose
Low Fewer active users, shorter conversations, high cache hit rate, limited tools Checks the minimum committed spend and prevents over-provisioning.
Expected Best product forecast, measured token averages from pilots, normal retry and tool behavior Provides the operating budget and unit economics target.
High More active users, long histories, higher output limits, tool loops, retries or regional multipliers Tests cash exposure, rate limits and whether a cost cap is needed.

Show the assumptions next to each total. For example, “high” should state whether it means twice as many users, twice as many requests, or longer prompts; otherwise stakeholders cannot tell which operational change would create the increase.

Which non-model costs belong in the estimate?

Raw token spend is only one part of an LLM product. At low volume, fixed services and engineering operations can exceed inference charges; at high volume, data transfer, storage and support can become material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Application compute: API servers, workers, queues, autoscaling and background jobs.
  • Databases: user data, conversation history, audit records and configuration.
  • Vector storage and retrieval: embeddings, indexes, replicas, refresh jobs and stored source documents.
  • Observability: logs, traces, token metrics, dashboards, alerting and retention.
  • Bandwidth: document uploads, model responses, streaming traffic and downloads.
  • Security and compliance: encryption, key management, data-residency services and required retention.
  • Support and operations: on-call coverage, incident response, evaluations and prompt maintenance.
  • Fixed platform fees: account, workspace, gateway or minimum-commit charges that do not scale with token count.

Allocate shared services consistently. A practical method is to assign direct model and tool charges to the feature that caused them, then distribute shared compute and observability by request count, token volume or measured resource use. State the allocation rule so product margins remain comparable month to month.

How should you compare models and providers?

The lowest advertised input rate is not necessarily the lowest effective cost. Compare the entire workload and the operational requirements around it.

  • Effective input and output rates: calculate them separately for your actual token mix.
  • Cache pricing and eligibility: a cheaper cached prefix can matter when prompts repeat, but only if the cache rules fit your request layout.
  • Batch eligibility: asynchronous classification or summarization may qualify for a 50% Anthropic Batch API discount, while interactive traffic cannot tolerate batch latency.
  • Context-length tier: long-context pricing or tier changes can dominate a retrieval-heavy application.
  • Tool and modality fees: search, file storage, containers, image and audio meters can outweigh token charges for tool-rich features.
  • Geography and data residency: a US-only route may carry a documented 1.1× multiplier on supported newer Claude models.
  • Latency and reliability: a cheaper tier that causes timeouts, retries or duplicate requests may cost more in production.
  • Cloud channel: direct API billing and marketplace billing can have different meters, discounts or reporting, so compare the channel you will actually purchase.

Run the same representative workload through each candidate and compare cost per successful task, not only cost per call. Include retries and the amount of human review required when quality differs.

How do you replace assumptions with production telemetry?

Instrument cost at the request boundary from the first beta. You need enough detail to explain a bill without storing more user content than your privacy policy permits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Capture identifiers: model, provider, API or cloud channel, context tier, region and latency mode.
  2. Capture usage: input tokens, output tokens, cached-input tokens, cache-write tokens and any provider-reported total.
  3. Capture features: tool name, call count, retrieval bytes or tokens, container usage and image or audio units.
  4. Capture outcome: success, timeout, safety refusal, retry, fallback model and user-visible completion.
  5. Tag the business dimension: feature, tenant, plan, environment and request type.
  6. Join the rate card: store the rate version or access date so historical invoices can be reconstructed after a price change.
  7. Review distributions: inspect p50, p95 and p99 token counts and tool calls; averages hide the sessions that create spend spikes.

Track both cost per request and cost per successful outcome. If 8% of calls retry, reporting only the first attempt understates the amount required to serve one completed task.

What are the most effective ways to reduce cost?

Reduce unnecessary tokens

Trim repeated instructions, conversation history and retrieved passages. Set a maximum output length appropriate to the feature, and return structured fields instead of verbose prose when users do not need an explanation.

Use caching deliberately

Place stable system instructions and reusable context in a cacheable prefix when the provider’s rules support it. Measure hit rate, cache-write cost and invalidation behavior; caching that rarely hits adds complexity without reducing spend.

Route by task difficulty

Send simple extraction, classification or formatting requests to a lower-cost model and reserve a more capable model for cases that need reasoning or long context. Define quality thresholds and fallback rules before routing traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Batch asynchronous work

For jobs that do not need an immediate answer, compare standard processing with batch pricing and its latency limits. Anthropic documents a 50% discount on both input and output tokens for eligible Batch API traffic.

Control loops and retries

Set maximum tool iterations, request timeouts and retry budgets. Log the reason for each retry so transient failures are not confused with prompts that consistently trigger loops.

Measure by feature and tenant

Dashboards that show only a global average conceal expensive workflows. Break spend down by model, feature, tenant, plan and request type, then set alerts for sudden changes in output length, retrieval size or tool-call frequency.

What common estimation mistakes should you avoid?

  • Using total tokens instead of separate rates: input and output prices are usually different.
  • Counting only the visible prompt: system messages, history, retrieved text and tool results are billable input when sent to the model.
  • Ignoring failed attempts: timeouts, safety retries and fallback calls can all consume tokens.
  • Leaving out storage and tools: search calls, file-search storage, containers and modalities have their own meters.
  • Assuming a historical price is current: the Society of Actuaries’ 2025 figures are context, not a 2026 quote.
  • Forgetting geography or billing channel: residency multipliers and marketplace metering can change the effective rate.
  • Forecasting from registered users: active users and requests per user determine demand.
  • Publishing a single precise number: before telemetry, show low, expected and high cases with their assumptions.
  • Failing to version the rate card: record the model, date, currency, region and billing mode used for every forecast.

How often should you update the estimate?

Reforecast whenever you change the model, prompt, context strategy, tool policy, region or billing channel. Otherwise, review it at least monthly against the provider invoice and your own usage logs. Investigate any gap by decomposing it into request volume, input tokens, output tokens, cache hit rate, tool calls, retries and non-model infrastructure rather than applying a blanket percentage adjustment.

A durable cost sheet has one row per workload, separate input and output volumes, feature meters, infrastructure allocation, scenario assumptions and a rate-card access date. That structure lets you answer both “What does one request cost?” and “Why did this month’s bill change?” without rebuilding the model from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cached tokens still count toward a model’s context limit?

Usually, yes: caching changes how eligible tokens are billed, not how much context the model receives. The exact cache window, prefix rules and invalidation behavior are provider-specific, so verify them before assuming a large prompt is fully discounted.

Should I budget for tokens generated by a failed request?

Yes. A timeout, client retry or fallback can consume input and output tokens even when the user never sees a completed answer. Track attempted and successful calls separately and include the observed retry rate in the high scenario.

How can I assign a shared LLM bill to different customers?

Tag every call with a tenant or workspace identifier and attribute direct model, retrieval and tool charges to that tenant. Allocate shared compute and monitoring with a documented rule such as request count, token volume or measured resource consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when a provider changes its prices mid-quarter?

Keep the old rate card for historical invoices, apply the new rates only from their effective date, and rerun low, expected and high scenarios. Record currency, geography, model tier and billing channel so the before-and-after comparison is meaningful.

Is a per-user average enough for pricing a subscription?

No. Averages hide heavy users and tool-rich workflows. Model the distribution of usage, set fair-use or quota controls where appropriate, and test whether the high-usage segment remains economically sustainable after infrastructure and support costs.
