The reliable way to estimate an AI agent’s microVM cost is to model its lifecycle rather than multiply an hourly VM price by elapsed time. Measure active CPU seconds, active memory seconds, snapshot reads and writes, storage retained while suspended, launcher and control-plane requests, observability and network traffic, and then add model or API charges as a separate line.

Use a representative billing period, report median and 95th-percentile session duration, and include peak concurrency. Averages alone hide burst costs and quota pressure. MicroVMs are usually most economical for bursty agents that spend long periods waiting between turns; continuously busy workloads can be cheaper on always-on containers or hosts.

What should a microVM cost estimate include?

Start with a complete cost equation for one billing period:

Total cost = running CPU + running memory + snapshot I/O + suspended storage + launcher/control plane + logs/network + model/API usage.

The first five terms describe the sandbox infrastructure. Token generation, embedding calls, web-search APIs and other model-provider charges belong in a separate model/API line so that a cheaper sandbox is not mistaken for a cheaper agent. Apply the provider’s regional rate to each measured quantity; do not use a single blended “cost per session” until the underlying meters are visible.

Running CPU and memory

While a session is running, multiply each allocation by the seconds it is actually running. A one-vCPU session that is mostly waiting still reserves memory and may incur the provider’s running memory meter, so measure wall-clock active time and allocation, not only guest CPU utilization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snapshot reads and writes

Suspending a session normally creates or updates a snapshot, and resuming it reads snapshot data. Charge the number of gigabytes written and read at the applicable I/O rates. Frequent suspend/resume cycles can make these operations material even when compute time is low.

Storage retained during suspension

A suspended agent keeps state somewhere. Include the gigabyte-months of image and snapshot data retained during the billing period. Terminated sessions release this storage, but a later launch may need a new snapshot transition.

Control plane, observability and network

Launcher functions, API Gateway requests, parameter or secret lookups, logs, metrics, traces, egress and service-to-service traffic can exceed the sandbox charge for short sessions. Count them as separate meters instead of hiding them inside a per-session assumption.

Which measurements do I need before calculating cost?

Instrument the session lifecycle and export a row per session. The minimum dataset is small enough for a spreadsheet but detailed enough to expose idle and burst behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the billing period

Choose a calendar month, 30-day operational period or another fixed window. Record the region, product edition, currency and rate-card date beside every estimate. Rates, quotas and features are volatile; the AWS figures in this guide were accessed on October 26, 2026 and should be checked against current pricing and service quotas within 30 days.

Capture session-level fields

  • Session identifier and tenant or agent type.
  • Allocated vCPUs and allocated memory in gigabytes.
  • Active seconds, suspended seconds and terminated timestamp.
  • Snapshot gigabytes written on suspend and read on resume.
  • Gigabyte-months of image and suspended-state storage.
  • Launch count, resume count and control-plane requests.
  • Log, metric, trace and network bytes.
  • Model calls, input tokens, output tokens and external API fees.

Export at least the 50th-percentile (p50) and 95th-percentile (p95) session duration, plus peak concurrent sessions. A mean duration can look safe while a long-tail p95 creates the largest bill and consumes the most quota.

Measure idle gaps, not just total duration

Record the time between agent turns, tool calls and user responses. These gaps let you test an idle policy: keep a session running for a short threshold, suspend it after the threshold, or terminate it after a longer period. The right threshold depends on observed gaps and snapshot-transition cost, not on a generic timeout recommendation.

What are the current reference rates for an AWS-style calculation?

AWS Builder Center publishes the following us-east-1 example rates for 2026. They are reference inputs, not a universal price: verify region, product, billing granularity and any minimums before using them in a forecast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Meter Reference rate Unit and qualification
vCPU while running $0.0000276944 per vCPU-second, us-east-1 example
Memory while running $0.0000036667 per GB-second, us-east-1 example
Snapshot write $0.0038 per GB written
Snapshot read $0.00155 per GB read
Suspended/image storage $0.08 per GB-month

These figures cover the example’s MicroVM meters only. AWS separately states that MicroVM runtime is billed per session and that standard charges also apply to API Gateway requests, Parameter Store API calls and Lambda invocations used by the launcher.

How do I calculate running CPU and memory cost?

Calculate CPU and memory independently for every session, then sum the rows:

cpu_cost = allocated_vCPU × active_seconds × cpu_rate

For a batch of sessions, either sum each row or multiply a common shape by its session count. Do not multiply peak concurrency by the entire month unless every slot is continuously occupied; concurrency is a capacity and burst metric, while active seconds are a usage metric.

Worked active-time example

With the reference rates, a 1-vCPU, 2-GB session active for 1,800 seconds costs:

  • CPU: 1 × 1,800 × $0.0000276944 = $0.04984992.
  • Memory: 2 × 1,800 × $0.0000036667 = $0.01320012.
  • Running compute subtotal: $0.06305004.

Keep the full precision in your worksheet and round only the displayed result. Early rounding is significant when thousands of short sessions are summed.

Account for vertical scaling

The cited AWS architecture describes Lambda MicroVM allocations from 0.25 to 4 vCPU and 0.5 to 8 GB, with up to 4× vertical scaling without recreating the environment. A scale-up changes both meters immediately, so record the allocation in each interval rather than assigning the session one average size. Confirm that the range and scaling behavior apply to the product and region you are using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do suspension, snapshots and termination change the bill?

Treat running, suspended and terminated as three different states. Their accounting rules and operational trade-offs are different.

State What remains allocated Cost items to measure Operational implication
Running CPU and memory allocation vCPU-seconds and GB-seconds, plus normal logs and network Fastest response, but idle wall time continues to meter
Suspended Snapshot or image state Snapshot writes, reads and GB-month storage; compute can stop Preserves state and avoids running compute while waiting
Terminated No session resources Future launch, image pull and snapshot transition when restarted Lowest idle cost, with the most work on the next launch

For a session, add:

snapshot_cost = snapshot_write_GB × write_rate + snapshot_read_GB × read_rate

suspended_storage_cost = suspended_GB_month × storage_rate

Then multiply the per-session result by session count, while separately adding shared launcher, logging and networking charges. If several tenants share an image or snapshot, allocate shared storage by a documented rule such as proportional bytes or active tenant-days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set an idle threshold from a break-even calculation

Compute the running burn rate for the current allocation:

running_rate_per_second = (vCPU × cpu_rate) + (GB × memory_rate)

For 1 vCPU and 2 GB at the reference rates, the running burn is $0.0000350278 per second, or about $0.12610008 per hour. If suspending and later resuming a session costs S dollars in snapshot writes, reads and related transition charges, the break-even idle duration is:

break_even_idle_seconds = S ÷ running_rate_per_second

Use measured S, not a guessed snapshot size. Suspend only when the expected idle gap exceeds that threshold and the added resume latency is acceptable. Very short gaps can cost more through repeated snapshot transitions than they save in compute.

What does a complete worked calculation look like?

AWS Builder Center’s published workload shape uses one vCPU and 2 GB, with 30 minutes active and eight hours suspended. Its stated total is $0.0669 per session under the listed us-east-1 assumptions. The always-on equivalent is $1.0719 per session, a stated 93.8% reduction for that particular shape.

Reproduce the active portion

The 30 active minutes equal 1,800 seconds. CPU and memory together total $0.06305004, as shown earlier. The difference between that subtotal and the published $0.0669 total represents the example’s snapshot and suspended-storage assumptions; the source does not itemize those components by gigabyte in the summary, so do not reverse-engineer a snapshot size from the total.

Compare with always-on operation

Thirty active minutes plus eight suspended hours equals 8.5 hours, or 30,600 seconds, if the microVM never suspends. At 1 vCPU and 2 GB, the compute calculation is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • CPU: 30,600 × $0.0000276944 = $0.847? (displayed total should be calculated with full precision).
  • Memory: 2 × 30,600 × $0.0000036667 = $0.224? (displayed total should be calculated with full precision).

Using full-precision arithmetic, the combined always-on result is $1.0719, matching the published figure. The comparison demonstrates the effect of eliminating eight idle hours; it is not a guaranteed percentage for another image size, snapshot pattern, region or concurrency profile.

Scale to a monthly workload

If 10,000 sessions have the same shape, multiply the published per-session infrastructure result by 10,000, then add launcher, API Gateway, Parameter Store, Lambda, logs, network and model/API charges. If only 2,000 sessions run concurrently at the peak, that peak still drives quota and capacity planning even though billing is based on each session’s measured usage.

How should I model p50, p95 and burst concurrency?

Build at least three scenarios instead of one average:

Scenario Inputs Purpose
Typical p50 active time, p50 suspend gap, normal concurrency Budget for an ordinary session
Long-tail p95 active time and p95 snapshot volume Expose expensive or state-heavy sessions
Burst Peak concurrent sessions and launch/resume rate Test quotas, launcher throughput and transient I/O

Add an idle-sensitivity table that varies the percentage of wall time spent suspended. For example, calculate 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 90% suspended time while holding active work constant. This reveals whether a policy change or a traffic spike matters more than a small rate-card change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use weighted traffic mixes when agents differ. A coding agent with large snapshots, a chat agent with short turns and a batch agent with continuous execution should have separate rows and separate p50/p95 distributions before you aggregate them.

Which microVM and container architecture is most economical?

Compare architectures on isolation, utilization, startup and state retention, resource limits and all control-plane charges. The lowest sandbox rate is not automatically the lowest total cost.

Architecture Isolation boundary Active versus idle economics Startup and state Limits and charges to verify
Per-session microVM Hardware-virtualization boundary between guest and host Strong fit for bursty sessions with long idle gaps; suspension can stop compute Snapshot/resume preserves state; transition I/O is billable vCPU, memory, image, disk, lifetime, snapshot and concurrency quotas
Managed AgentCore-style runtime Provider-managed isolated runtime Usage-based session billing can avoid idle compute Managed launch and suspension reduce operations work Documented 2 GB image limit for AgentCore Runtime; verify current duration and regional limits
Fargate task Managed task isolation Good for sustained utilization; stopping tasks avoids idle task compute Task restart is generally a new launch rather than a VM snapshot workflow Task CPU/memory sizes, startup time, storage, logging, networking and request charges
Containers on shared nodes Container boundary on a shared kernel Often cheapest at high continuous utilization; idle reservations can waste node capacity Fast starts when capacity exists; application must persist state Node utilization, autoscaling, bin-packing, kernel risk, storage and operations labor
Self-managed Firecracker Firecracker microVM boundary under your control Can be efficient for high volume, but you own capacity and idle hosts Custom snapshot and scheduler design; operational complexity is higher Host cost, orchestration, patching, monitoring, snapshot storage and network

Firecracker’s current specification reports virtual-machine-manager memory overhead of no more than 5 MiB and guest /sbin/init startup of no more than 125 milliseconds under its stated benchmark configuration. Those are engineering reference points, not a promise that an application, image pull or control-plane launch will complete in that time.

Check service-specific ceilings before extrapolating

The cited AWS documentation lists a maximum total MicroVM lifetime of eight hours, including suspended time. Its compute-options table lists 32 GB of native disk for Lambda MicroVMs, while AgentCore Runtime has a 2 GB image limit. These values belong to different product contexts; do not combine them into one universal MicroVM specification. Confirm the applicable limit for your runtime before designing a session that must survive a long pause.

What common mistakes make estimates unreliable?

Using wall-clock time for every state

Charging suspended hours as running compute overstates savings from suspension in one model and understates them in another. Keep state timestamps and apply the meter that belongs to each state.

Ignoring snapshot churn

A policy that suspends after every short turn may generate many writes and reads. Count transitions and snapshot volume, then test a longer idle threshold when gaps are short.

Confusing allocation with utilization

Providers commonly meter allocated vCPU and memory while a sandbox is running. A guest using 5% CPU does not necessarily cost 5% of the vCPU rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving out launcher and observability costs

Short sessions can create more launches, API requests and log events per compute-second than long sessions. Attribute these shared services to a session or tenant using a documented allocation rule.

Mixing infrastructure and intelligence costs

Model tokens can dominate the bill even when microVM compute is efficient. Present infrastructure, model/API and total landed cost as separate subtotals so an architecture decision remains interpretable.

Extrapolating a single AWS example

The $0.0669 suspended-session result and 93.8% reduction are tied to one 1-vCPU/2-GB workload shape and stated us-east-1 assumptions. Different regions, image sizes, snapshot patterns, limits and concurrency can produce a different result.

How do I choose between suspension and termination?

Choose suspension when preserving in-memory state and reducing resume work has measurable value, and choose termination when idle periods are long enough that retained storage and transition overhead no longer justify keeping the state.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use running state for short, frequent turn gaps where response latency matters more than idle compute.
  • Use suspension for medium gaps when the snapshot is reasonably small and the measured break-even threshold is below the expected gap.
  • Use termination for long gaps, abandoned sessions or state that can be reconstructed cheaply from durable storage.

Revisit the policy after traffic changes. A launch burst can turn a previously harmless termination policy into a control-plane bottleneck, while a rise in user wait time can make always-on capacity worthwhile even if its raw compute bill is higher.

What is the defensible way to report the result?

Publish the assumptions beside every headline number: region, product and edition, allocation, active and suspended durations, snapshot sizes, session count, concurrency, rate-card date and excluded charges. Give a range or scenario table when idle behavior is uncertain, and label one-time promotions or allowances separately from recurring rates.

A defensible estimate therefore has three outputs: infrastructure cost per session, model/API cost per session and total monthly cost under typical, long-tail and burst scenarios. MicroVMs are compelling when they eliminate substantial idle compute without creating excessive snapshot churn or control-plane overhead; continuously utilized workloads should be priced against always-on containers or hosts using the same measured session data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do suspended microVMs still incur charges?

Suspension can stop running CPU and memory meters, but the retained image or snapshot still consumes storage and resume/suspend operations can incur read and write charges. Whether suspension saves money depends on the measured idle gap and snapshot transition cost for your workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I estimate cost when session lengths vary widely?

Export a duration histogram and calculate costs by bucket, then report p50 and p95 results alongside the traffic-weighted monthly total. This prevents a small number of very long sessions from disappearing inside an average.

Should model-token charges be included in the microVM rate?

Keep them as a separate subtotal and show a combined landed cost afterward. Separating the two makes it clear whether an architectural change reduced sandbox expense or merely coincided with a change in model usage.

What limits can invalidate a microVM forecast?

Check maximum lifetime including suspended time, image and disk limits, memory and vCPU quotas, snapshot limits, launch rate and regional availability. A design that exceeds any one of these may require a different runtime or a partitioned workload, regardless of its calculated per-session price.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
