Estimate AI-fabric fiber capacity in layers, not from GPU count alone. First separate compute east–west, storage, in-band management and out-of-band management traffic. Then model the busiest simultaneous training, checkpoint, inference and migration flows; convert that demand into line rate, wavelength and fiber requirements; check reach, optical budget, connectors and route diversity; reserve explicit capacity for bursts, maintenance, failures and growth; and validate the complete path with representative collective-communication workloads. Published guidance places representative AI tiers at 400G–800G for compute, 200G–400G for storage, 100G for in-band management and below 10G for out-of-band management. The resulting design depends on your traffic matrix, topology and optical architecture rather than one universal multiplier.

What traffic must the capacity estimate include?

Build separate demand estimates for every traffic class that can contend for the same fiber plant. AI clusters create synchronized east–west bursts, while storage and management flows have different timing and tolerance for congestion.

Traffic class Representative rate in published guidance What to count Planning implication
Compute east–west 400G progressing to 800G GPU-to-GPU collectives, parameter exchange and accelerator-to-accelerator traffic Usually the dominant peak; model synchronized all-reduce, all-to-all and pipeline phases.
Storage 200G progressing to 400G Checkpoint writes and reads, dataset streaming and migration Checkpoint windows can overlap with training and create a second peak.
In-band management 100G Control traffic using the production fabric Keep it in the matrix even when its average rate is small; it shares failure domains with data traffic.
Out-of-band management Below 10G Device administration, telemetry and recovery access on a separate network Size for the actual management design and failover needs, not for accelerator throughput.

The Ethernet Alliance and Panduit report that fiber density in AI-oriented facilities can be up to eight times higher than in traditional data centers. That density affects pathway fill, patching, bend-radius compliance, connector access and the number of spare fibers you can realistically maintain.

How do I calculate peak demand?

Use a traffic matrix for the worst credible overlap, then document every concurrency and oversubscription assumption. Average utilization is not a safe substitute for the synchronized bursts produced by collective operations.

  1. Define the population and direction. Record the number of servers, switches, storage endpoints and management devices. State whether each figure is per direction, bidirectional full duplex or an aggregate of both directions.
  2. List operating scenarios. At minimum, model the busiest steady-state training phase, checkpoint creation or restore, inference serving, data migration and a maintenance or failure event. If two scenarios cannot occur together, keep them as separate cases rather than adding them.
  3. Set concurrency explicitly. Write down how many links or flows are active at the same time, the expected oversubscription between tiers and whether traffic arrives in microbursts. No universal oversubscription or burst factor is established by the cited guidance.
  4. Sum each class. Multiply the number of simultaneous flows by the line rate assigned to that class, then add the classes that share a path or optical system. Keep ingress and egress totals separate until the topology shows that they share the same capacity.
  5. Identify the constraining cut. Calculate demand across every spine, leaf uplink, inter-building route, storage pod and wavelength group. The required capacity is set by the busiest cut, not by the cluster-wide average.

Illustrative peak calculation

The following arithmetic is an example of the method, not a universal cluster profile. Suppose a design review identifies 24 simultaneous compute flows at 800G, eight storage flows at 400G, four in-band management flows at 100G and an upper-bound 10G for two out-of-band flows:

Class Simultaneous flows Rate per flow Gross demand
Compute 24 800G 19.2Tb/s
Storage 8 400G 3.2Tb/s
In-band management 4 100G 0.4Tb/s
Out-of-band management 2 10G upper bound 0.02Tb/s
Combined one-direction peak 22.82Tb/s

If the engineering review reserves 25% for the selected growth and failure cases, the planning target becomes 28.525Tb/s. That percentage is an explicit example; choose and justify your own reserve from measured burst behavior, maintenance policy, route redundancy and the date of the next expansion.

How do line rate, wavelengths and fibers translate into usable capacity?

Optical capacity is the product of the usable rate on each wavelength, the number of active wavelengths and the usable fibers, reduced by protocol and system overhead. A practical planning expression is:

usable capacity = line rate × active wavelengths × usable fibers × protocol efficiency

ITU-T describes line capacity in the same terms: single-wavelength rate, multiplexed channel count and spectral efficiency. Its 2025 guidance identifies 400G and 800G-plus per-wavelength rates for AI data-center interconnection and discusses research and roadmaps toward 1.6T. It also gives illustrative aggregate targets of 48Tb/s, 64Tb/s and 96Tb/s under different band and wavelength assumptions; those are design illustrations, not a promise that every transceiver or fiber plant will deliver them.

Converting the example demand

For the illustrative 28.525Tb/s target, an 800G wavelength with a 90% planning efficiency contributes 0.72Tb/s. The minimum is therefore ceil(28.525 ÷ 0.72) = 40 active wavelengths on the constraining cut. This result does not by itself tell you the fiber count: fiber count depends on whether the architecture uses parallel-fiber optics, wavelength-division multiplexing, duplex pairs, breakout assemblies or a combination. Document that mapping separately and add physically diverse spare paths for failures.

Which physical constraints can invalidate the arithmetic?

A mathematically sufficient wavelength total can still fail when the installed plant cannot carry the chosen optics, reach or connector arrangement. Check these constraints before ordering transceivers or cabling.

Reach and optical budget

NVIDIA’s current LinkX documentation lists 800G OSFP options with 500m DR and 2km FR optical reaches, alongside 1.6T/800G OSFP options. Treat those distances as the specified reach for the relevant optic, not as a guarantee for every patching arrangement. Add connector loss, splice loss, aging margin, temperature effects and any intermediate panel or mux loss, then verify that the link budget remains positive.

Connector and cabling density

The Ethernet Alliance/Panduit guidance describes an eight-fiber MPO optical cable as a matching cabling accessory for 800G links. Confirm polarity, pinout, fiber type, breakout geometry and the switch’s port specification; an MPO that fits mechanically can still be incompatible optically or electrically. Leave enough working space to clean, inspect and replace high-density connectors without disturbing adjacent links.

Protocol and port compatibility

The NVIDIA specification covers InfiniBand and Ethernet variants and 200G PAM4 modulation in the listed LinkX options. Match the optic to the switch, NIC, protocol mode, firmware, FEC and management interface. A port that is advertised as 800G may require a particular OSFP form factor, lane configuration or software setting.

Route diversity and failure domains

Count fibers by physically diverse route, not only by the number in a tray. A single overloaded duct, patch panel or cross-connect can remove every wavelength in a supposedly redundant bundle. Map primary and secondary routes, shared chambers, building entrances and power dependencies before declaring the design fault tolerant.

How should I compare 400G, 800G and 1.6T designs?

Compare complete systems rather than headline port speed. The right choice balances usable aggregate throughput, density, reach, failure headroom, latency behavior, power and the ability to test and upgrade the plant.

Design point Capacity and density Reach and optics Trade-offs to examine Upgrade implication
400G links Lower rate per port; more ports, lanes or wavelengths are needed for the same aggregate target. Depends on the selected optic and installed plant; do not infer reach from the rate alone. May fit an existing 400G fleet and allow incremental deployment, but can consume more rack, patch-panel and fiber positions. Reserve space, power and route capacity for a later move to 800G.
800G links Representative compute tier in the Ethernet Alliance/Panduit guidance; fewer links can deliver a given aggregate target. NVIDIA documents 500m DR and 2km FR 800G OSFP options for applicable platforms. Higher density reduces port count but increases connector cleanliness, thermal, optical-budget and compatibility demands. Provides a practical bridge to higher-rate optics if the cabling and switch architecture are modular.
1.6T links Potentially halves the port count for a fixed aggregate rate compared with 800G, subject to actual system efficiency. Availability, reach and interface details depend on the platform; ITU-T characterizes 1.6T as a research and roadmap direction, while NVIDIA lists 1.6T/800G OSFP options in current documentation. Requires ecosystem maturity, thermal capacity, validated cabling and acceptable power per bit. A higher headline rate does not remove congestion at an undersized spine. Design pathways, panels, power and test access now so the optical upgrade does not require a civil-works project.

For each candidate, record peak usable Tb/s, per-wavelength rate, wavelength and fiber count, reach and optical margin, oversubscription, failure headroom, latency and packet-loss behavior, connector density, 1.6T migration steps, power per bit and testability. A design that wins on port count can lose on route diversity or maintenance access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much engineering headroom should I reserve?

There is no single published factor that covers every AI fabric. Reserve capacity as named allowances so reviewers can see what happens when traffic bursts, a link is removed, a route is under maintenance or the cluster grows.

  • Burst allowance: derive it from packet captures or workload replay during collective phases, not from a generic average-utilization target.
  • Failure allowance: recalculate the busiest surviving path after losing one link, one port group, one fiber pair or one route, according to your failure policy.
  • Maintenance allowance: ensure planned work can drain a link without pushing neighboring links beyond their congestion or loss target.
  • Growth allowance: tie the reserve to a stated horizon, such as the next server pod or optical refresh, and convert it into ports, wavelengths, fibers, rack units and power.
  • Protocol allowance: include FEC, framing, encoding and any traffic-class reservation in the usable-rate calculation.

Keep these allowances separate in the worksheet. A single hidden multiplier makes it impossible to tell whether a shortfall comes from growth, a failure scenario or protocol overhead.

How do I plan for a 1.6T upgrade?

Prepare the physical plant and operating model before the first 1.6T optic is available. The objective is to avoid replacing pathways and panels when the transceivers change.

  1. Reserve pathway and panel space. Size trays, cabinets, patch fields and bend-radius zones for the higher-density option and its service loops.
  2. Preserve fiber and route diversity. Install or reserve physically separate fibers where the 1.6T design will need parallel paths; label dark fibers and their termination points now.
  3. Choose modular connectivity. Use a connector and breakout strategy that can be reconfigured without replacing every trunk. Verify that polarity and lane mapping remain unambiguous after migration.
  4. Budget power and cooling. Record transceiver, switch-port and panel power, then check rack-level cooling at the planned port count. Fewer ports do not automatically mean lower rack power.
  5. Define an interoperability gate. Require proof of switch, NIC, protocol, firmware, FEC and optical-budget compatibility before approving a production cutover.
  6. Stage test capacity. Keep spare ports, loopbacks, optical meters and traffic-generation access so a new rate can be qualified without borrowing a live production path.

How do I validate the estimate end to end?

Validate the complete path with the same traffic patterns that drove the estimate. Keysight’s AI-network guidance treats confidence as an end-to-end problem spanning physical links, transport response, topology and workload timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Physical layer: inspect and clean connectors; verify wavelength, power, polarity, FEC status, bit-error counters and optical margin at the far end.
  • Transport: measure throughput, congestion response, retransmissions, queue depth, packet loss and recovery after a link or route is removed.
  • Topology: test every spine, leaf, storage path and inter-building route, including the path that remains after a planned failure.
  • Workload timing: replay representative all-reduce, all-to-all, checkpoint and restore phases. Record iteration time, synchronization stalls and tail latency, not just line-rate counters.
  • Operations: verify telemetry, alert thresholds, drain procedures, wavelength identification and the time required to replace an optic or clean a connector.

Compare measured usable throughput with the worksheet’s peak and headroom values. If a link passes an optical test but jobs slow down, investigate congestion, topology imbalance, packet loss, retries and transport settings rather than immediately adding more fiber.

What planning failures cause AI fabrics to run out of capacity?

Symptom Likely planning error Corrective action
Training slows only during checkpoints Storage traffic was averaged separately from compute traffic. Model checkpoint overlap explicitly and size the shared cut for the combined peak.
One spine is congested while cluster average is low Oversubscription and topology were reduced to a single cluster-wide number. Recalculate every spine, leaf and route, including flow placement and hashing behavior.
Optical links show errors after a patch change Connector polarity, lane mapping or optical budget was assumed from mechanical fit. Validate the exact MPO pinout, breakout, cleaning process and end-to-end loss.
A “redundant” route fails with its primary Both routes share a duct, panel, chamber or building entrance. Document physical dependencies and move the secondary path to a genuinely diverse route.
Planned 1.6T migration needs new trays Only switch ports were reserved; pathway, panel, power and service space were not. Update the physical design and bill of materials before the next expansion.
Optical counters are clean but collective jobs stall Validation stopped at the physical layer. Run workload-timed tests and inspect congestion, packet loss, transport response and topology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I estimate fiber capacity from the number of GPUs alone?

No. GPU count does not reveal collective-operation patterns, oversubscription, storage overlap, topology or the number of simultaneous flows. Start with measured or modeled traffic per scenario and use GPU count only to build the endpoint inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I light every planned wavelength when the network is installed?

Not necessarily. Dark wavelengths can defer transceiver spending, but the muxing system, optical power plan, patch panels and route documentation must support the eventual count. Test an expansion wavelength before relying on it for production headroom.

What does a 1.6T roadmap mean for a purchase decision today?

It signals a direction for higher per-wavelength rates, not a universal delivery date or interoperability guarantee. Buy the current rate that meets the validated workload, while reserving pathway, panel, power and route capacity for the upgrade.

Why can packet loss hurt AI training even when average utilization is low?

Collective operations synchronize many endpoints, so a short burst or a single congested queue can delay the entire group. Measure tail behavior, retries and iteration-time impact during workload replay instead of judging the fabric by long-term average throughput alone.
