Split-screen multitasking lets you use two apps at the same time—useful for replies while watching, referencing notes while browsing, or comparing two pages without constant switching.
On Android 13, the feature is usually built into the multitasking experience. The exact buttons and gestures can vary a bit by brand, but the core workflow is consistent.

Split-screen shows two apps side-by-side (or one above the other, depending on orientation and device UI). Android 13 requires apps to support “resizable” or “multi-window” behavior; many modern apps do, but some won’t.

If an app doesn’t support split screen, Android will either open it in the main pane only, refuse to launch the secondary pane, or fall back to normal fullscreen behavior.
Prerequisites and quick checks
Before you start, confirm a few basics so you’re not fighting settings that block multitasking.
- OS: You’re actually on Android 13. Go to Settings → About phone → Android version (or Software information).
- App support: Choose two apps that are known to resize (e.g., YouTube, Gmail, Chrome, Maps, Google Docs).
- Orientation: Rotate if needed. Some devices default to vertical split in portrait and horizontal in landscape.
- Accessibility modes: Some accessibility settings can reduce multi-window behavior. If split screen fails repeatedly, check accessibility settings after you try the standard methods.
Method 1: Start split screen from Recents
This is the most reliable approach on Android 13. It uses the multitasking menu (Recents) to place one app on top and then select a second app.

- Open Recents (multitasking view).
- Look for the app window in Recents, then tap the split-screen icon or choose an option labeled Split screen / Split top and bottom / Open in split screen (naming varies by brand).
- When the first app shrinks to one side, choose the second app from the home screen, app list, or suggested apps.
- Repeat if you selected the wrong second app—swap using the window selection method in the split-screen controls section.
If you don’t see a split-screen option on the Recents card, use Method 2 or check the device differences section for how your OEM implements the control.
Method 2: Start split screen from the app switcher via drag
On many Android 13 devices, you can start split screen by dragging the app card from Recents into position.
- Open Recents.
- Find the app you want in one pane.
- Press and hold the app’s card/window.
- Drag it to the side or top area where Android indicates a split-screen target.
- Release to “dock” the app. The second pane should prompt you to pick another app.
- Select the second app and confirm.
Drag-to-dock is especially common on devices with gesture navigation. If it doesn’t work, Method 1 usually still does—or your OEM may require a dedicated multitasking button.
Method 3: Use the app’s split-screen action (when available)
Some apps and OEM launchers provide a dedicated entry point, often from the app’s own menu or from multitasking controls attached to the app.

- Open the app you want to place in the first pane.
- Open Recents.
- Look for a small menu button on the app card (often three dots or a toolbar icon).
- Select an option like Split screen, Multi-window, or Open in split view.
- Pick the second app when the docked pane is ready.
If you only see fullscreen and no split-screen option, that usually means your device UI or that specific app isn’t exposing multi-window controls.
Control split-screen while you’re in it
Once split-screen is active, you can make it feel natural instead of awkward.
Switch focus between panes
Tap inside a pane. The active pane usually shows a subtle highlight and receives input, keyboard focus, and gestures.
Adjust the divider
Drag the divider bar to resize the two apps. Not all apps handle resizing equally—some will reflow text more smoothly than others.
Swap apps
Many Android 13 skins include a quick action in the split view controls to swap left/right. If you don’t see it, open Recents and repeat the split process with the desired app placement.
Open one app full screen
Look for a control like Full screen or a divider handle action to remove the second pane.
Close split screen
Either choose the exit/fullscreen option from the split view controls or drag one pane back to the divider until it expands.

Adjust behavior and pairing rules
Android and OEMs can apply rules that affect which app combinations work. This is normal.
| Behavior | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Second app opens fullscreen | The second app may not support multi-window resizing | Try a different app (Chrome, Messages, Gmail often work) |
| Split icon is missing in Recents | Your OEM may hide split mode behind a gesture or different menu | Use drag-to-dock (Method 2) or check OEM section |
| Black screen or frozen pane | Resource-heavy apps can stall when resized | Restart the app in that pane or reduce background apps |
| Divider won’t move | The current app pair may have fixed layout constraints | Try swapping apps or choose another app for one pane |
Device differences you’ll actually notice
Android 13 provides the foundation, but the UI layer (gesture navigation, Recents card layout, and split controls) differs between brands.
Pixel / stock Android 13
On Pixel devices running Android 13, split screen is typically accessed from Recents with a visible “split” control on supported app cards.
- Open the first app.
- Open Recents (swipe up and pause, or use the navigation button depending on your setup).
- Tap the split-screen icon on the app card.
- Pick the second app from the app grid or suggestions.
If you don’t see the icon, drag-to-dock from Recents is often the fallback.
Samsung One UI (Android 13-based)
Samsung typically labels the feature under split-screen options in multitasking, and it may also surface in the app’s menu actions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Recents.
- On the first app card, select the Multi window or Split screen option (wording varies).
- Select the second app to complete the split view.
Samsung also offers configuration around split view behavior; if your phone is using a specific multitasking mode, it can change what icons appear in Recents.
OnePlus / OxygenOS (Android 13-based)
OnePlus devices usually expose split-screen from the multitasking/app switcher UI. Some models also offer different gestures for multi-window.

- Open the first app.
- Open the app switcher/Recents.
- Choose the option that mentions Split screen or Multi-window.
- Select the second app from the remaining app list.
If the option isn’t visible on the card, verify you aren’t using a navigation mode or accessibility setting that changes multitasking behavior.
Other OEM skins
Most OEMs offer the feature through one of three places: Recents card actions, a drag-to-dock target, or an app switcher menu item.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Look in Recents for a split-screen or multi-window icon.
- If missing, try pressing and holding the app card and dragging to the split target.
- If you still can’t find it, search your Settings app for terms like multi-window, split screen, or multitasking.
Troubleshooting: split screen won’t start
If split-screen isn’t available at all, work through these checks in order.
- Try two different apps. Use stable resizable apps like Chrome + Messages or YouTube + Maps. If split works with one pair but not another, it’s app support—not your phone.
- Restart the first app. Close the app from Recents and reopen it, then attempt split again.
- Confirm your navigation mode. Some gesture configurations on Android 13 can hide or change multitasking interactions. Switch between gesture and button navigation if your phone supports it.
- Check Accessibility. Temporary accessibility settings can interfere with multi-window. Open Settings → Accessibility and look for modes related to magnification, interaction control, or simplified UI. Disable them briefly to test.
- Check developer/overlay tools. If you use screen overlays (ad blockers, task managers, or custom launchers), try uninstalling or disabling them temporarily.
- Update apps. Outdated apps sometimes don’t report resizable capabilities correctly. Update both apps via Google Play.
- Restart the phone. This clears stuck multitasking state after an OS or app crash.
Troubleshooting: split screen starts but one side fails
When split view starts but the second pane is blank, frozen, or switches to fullscreen, it usually comes down to app behavior under resizing.
- Switch the secondary app. Pick a known-resizable app for the second pane to confirm the split view itself works.
- Reduce the app’s load. For example, stop heavy playback or sign-in flows while testing.
- Rotate the screen. Some apps only behave correctly in one orientation. Test both portrait and landscape.
- Kill background memory pressure. Close other apps in Recents to free RAM. Resource-heavy apps are more likely to freeze when resized.
- Try a different start method. If drag-to-dock fails, use the Recents split icon path. If the icon path fails, try the drag-to-dock target.
Best practices for smoother multitasking
- Pair “input” apps with “reference” apps. Examples: Messages + browser, Notes + YouTube, Calendar + email.
- Use the keyboard intentionally. When text fields are in both panes, the focused pane gets the keyboard. Tap the pane you want before typing.
- Resize before interacting. Some apps reflow more cleanly if you set the divider first, then scroll or tap.
- Avoid constant app switching inside each pane. If you keep re-launching screens, the device may lag when you resize again.
Security and privacy considerations
Split screen can increase exposure because both apps are visible at once. Be careful when using sensitive screens.
- Financial apps and password managers may block screenshots or obscure content in split mode.
- If you’re in a meeting, double-check that notification content from one pane isn’t visible on your lock screen notifications.

FAQs
Why doesn’t the split-screen option show up in Recents on Android 13?
Either your device UI hides the split icon behind another multitasking control, or the app you’re trying to split doesn’t support multi-window. Test with Chrome + Messages to isolate the cause.
Can I use split screen with any two apps?
No. Android 13 requires the apps to be resizable or multi-window compatible. If one app refuses, try a different app pair or use fullscreen for that specific app.
How do I exit split screen?
Use the split view controls to select fullscreen for one pane, or drag one pane back to merge them. The exact label varies by OEM, but the exit action is usually near the divider controls.
Does split screen work with gesture navigation?
Usually yes, but gesture behavior can affect how you access Recents. If you can’t find the split option, switch briefly to button navigation (or vice versa) and try again.
Is there a setting to turn split screen on or off in Android 13?
On many phones, it’s automatic. Some OEMs include settings under multitasking or multi-window. If your split icon is missing, it’s more likely app support or UI differences than a single Android 13 toggle.
Bottom Line
On Android 13, split-screen multitasking is typically enabled through Recents: open one app, tap (or drag) it into split-screen mode, then select a second app for the other pane.
If split-screen doesn’t start, test with resizable apps first, then use drag-to-dock and check accessibility or OEM multitasking differences.
