How to Downgrade from an iOS Public Beta to the Latest Stable Release

Apple’s immediate way to remove an installed iOS beta is a computer restore, which erases the iPhone. Check backup compatibility before you begin.

To remove an installed iOS public beta now, Apple’s documented method is to erase and restore your iPhone using a computer. Turning Beta Updates off only stops future beta releases; it does not remove the version already installed. Before you restore, check whether you have an archived backup made on an iOS version compatible with the public release, because a backup created on beta software may not restore to an earlier iOS version.

Choose between stopping future betas and removing the installed beta

Option Removes the beta already installed? Erases the iPhone? Computer required?
Turn off Beta Updates or remove the beta profile No. It stops future beta updates. No. No.
Erase and restore through recovery mode Yes. Apple says this installs the current publicly released, non-beta iOS version. Yes. Yes.
Install an update offered after beta expiration Depends on the update offered to the device. Not stated by Apple for this path. No; use Settings.

Apple does not describe a supported on-device rollback that removes an installed beta immediately without erasing the device. Its guidance is to erase and restore it: Apple’s instructions for uninstalling iOS or iPadOS beta software.

Before restoring, check your backup

A restore erases the iPhone. First look for an archived backup made before you installed beta software, or one made on an iOS version compatible with the public version that will be installed. Apple warns that a backup created while using beta software may not work with an earlier iOS version. If you do not have a compatible backup, you may not be able to restore your latest beta-era backup after the downgrade.

Restore the iPhone to the current public iOS release

  1. Update the computer software. Use a Mac with the latest macOS or a Windows PC with the latest Apple Devices app, as applicable. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible cable. Cable compatibility depends on the ports on both devices; Apple does not specify one universal cable type.
  2. Enter recovery mode. On iPhone 8 and later, quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down. Hold the Side button until the recovery-mode screen appears. For other models, follow the model-specific button instructions on Apple’s support page.
  3. Choose Restore when the computer prompts you. This erases the iPhone and installs the current publicly released, non-beta version of iOS.
  4. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPhone exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode step and choose Restore again.
  5. Complete setup. Wait for the restore to finish. If prompted, sign in to your Apple Account to turn off Activation Lock. Set up the iPhone from a compatible archived backup, if you have one.

Turn off future beta updates without removing the installed beta

iOS 16.4 or later

Open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, then select Off. This stops future beta updates but leaves the currently installed beta in place.

iOS 16.3.1 or earlier

Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, select the beta software profile, then tap Remove Profile. Removing the profile prevents future beta delivery; it does not uninstall the beta already on the iPhone.

If the beta has expired

If your iPhone says an update is available because the beta expired, install the offered update from Settings > General > Software Update. The update offered depends on the device and its current state; this notice is not a guaranteed way to choose any earlier stable iOS version.
