If Fortnite voice chat is not working, first check Epic’s service status, make sure you and the people you want to reach are in the same voice channel, and confirm that chat is allowed for your account. Then check your console party-chat status, audio devices and microphone permissions, or network restrictions. The right fix depends on where the problem is occurring.
Start with the channel, mute controls, and service status
- Check for an outage or known issue. Visit Fortnite Communities for known issues and Epic Games Server Status for service disruptions. Status can change; if voice chat is affected by a system-wide issue, Epic says it may recover once the issue is resolved.
- Choose the channel your group is using. In Fortnite’s Social menu or profile controls, select the appropriate voice channel. Party chat connects members of a party across Fortnite and Epic apps. Game chat connects players in the same island instance when the island creator supports it. If you are trying to reach teammates in an island, Party chat may not be the right channel, and vice versa. - Check mute and volume. Make sure you have not muted or deafened yourself or another player, and raise Fortnite’s voice-chat volume. Epic recommends setting it to at least 50% for audibility; this is guidance, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check which device is handling the voice session. If you recently switched devices, voice may have moved to another device. Opening Fortnite on a second device can prompt you to move the voice session there, and Party Voice can continue in the background on mobile.
Make sure the account is allowed to use chat
A headset or platform setting cannot override an account-level restriction. If the account is cabined because a parent or guardian has not completed Epic’s consent process, voice and text chat remain unavailable until that process is completed. Parental controls can also limit who the player may contact.

Epic’s troubleshooting guidance describes these age-related options, subject to parental permission: under 10, Friends Only; ages 10–12, Friends Only or Friends and Teammates; age 13 or older, Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everyone. Epic’s current communication-settings guide also says chat defaults to Off for users who indicate they are under 18, and that children under 10 have a Friends Only maximum. The account’s current parental controls determine the available choices.
Check the account’s current Epic parental controls and set chat to an allowed option rather than Nobody. A guardian must complete any required consent steps; do not try to bypass family or age restrictions. Epic explains the current chat options in its communication-settings guide.

Fix console voice chat
Xbox
Xbox Party Chat can take priority over Fortnite voice chat. Epic states: “If you want to use Fortnite’s voice chat, you must leave Xbox or PlayStation Party Chat to use Fortnite voice chat, even if nobody else is there.”
- Open Parties & chats and select the active party.
- Press the View button, then choose Switch to game chat.
- If cross-platform chat still fails, review Xbox privacy and online safety settings for cross-network play and voice/text communication.
Epic also lists DNS, cache, and UPnP/NAT checks among Xbox troubleshooting options. Try these after confirming the channel, account permissions, and party-chat setting.

PlayStation 5
Check that Mute Game Voice Chat is disabled under Sound. If it is already disabled, restart Fortnite. Epic notes that voice chat may be temporarily interrupted while the game loads and return after loading finishes.
Nintendo Switch
Epic documents a specific issue path for a 3.5 mm headset used while the Switch is docked. If that describes your setup, try a USB receiver, a USB headset, or a USB-to-3.5 mm adapter. These are troubleshooting options identified by Epic, not guaranteed fixes or endorsements of particular products.

Check microphone and audio settings on PC and Mac
Windows PC
- In Fortnite’s audio settings, confirm voice chat is enabled and check whether Push-to-Talk is on. If it is, use the assigned push-to-talk control when speaking, or change the mode if you want an open microphone.
- In Windows sound settings, select the headset or speakers you are actually using as the default playback device, and select the active microphone as the default recording device.
- Allow Fortnite to access the microphone in Windows privacy settings, then install any available Windows updates.
- If chat options are restricted by parental controls, changing audio settings will not remove that account restriction.
Mac
Grant Fortnite microphone access in macOS privacy settings. If permission is already enabled, return to Fortnite and verify that the intended voice channel and microphone are active.
Mobile: check the voice session and account settings
Epic’s documented mobile-specific detail is that Party Voice can keep running in the background on mobile, and opening Fortnite on another device may prompt you to move the active voice session there. If a player seems to have disappeared from chat after changing devices, check which device is currently handling voice. Also verify the Party or Game channel, mute state, volume, and account chat permissions.

Epic’s troubleshooting guidance does not provide a complete, separate checklist for mobile operating systems, so steps such as changing a specific phone’s microphone-permission menu are not covered here. Use the phone’s current app-permission controls if microphone access appears to be blocked, but menu names and behavior vary by device and operating-system version.
When settings look right, investigate the network
Epic identifies network configuration and possible VoIP restrictions as causes to check when the simpler settings are correct. Its troubleshooting guidance lists XMPP and ports 5222 and 433 for the voice-chat connection. If you manage the network, ask the administrator or internet provider whether the relevant traffic is blocked; do not assume a particular router menu path, since controls vary by model.

- Check whether router SIP-ALG or other network configuration is interfering with voice traffic.
- Review DNS and, on Xbox, UPnP/NAT configuration using guidance for your specific router or console.
- Ask your ISP whether VoIP is restricted on your connection or in your region. Restrictions can vary; verify rather than assuming that the headset or Fortnite is at fault.
