To find out whether zram is contributing to high CPU usage or a slowdown, compare CPU and memory-pressure measurements with zram’s per-device counters while the problem is happening, then compare them with a normal period. zram compresses pages in memory, so its work can coincide with CPU activity—but a counter snapshot or high CPU reading alone cannot show that zram is the cause.
What zram can—and cannot—tell you about a slowdown
zram is a Linux kernel feature that presents a RAM-based block device. As the Linux kernel zram documentation puts it, “Pages written to these disks are compressed and stored in memory itself.” Compression and decompression take system work, so zram is one possible factor to investigate when CPU use rises.

The kernel documentation does not set a universal CPU percentage, compression ratio, or latency threshold that identifies zram as the culprit. The useful question is whether zram activity changes during the same interval as the slowdown, and whether other processes or overall memory pressure offer a better explanation.

First identify the zram device your system is using; its sysfs directory is named `/sys/block/zram<id>/`, such as `/sys/block/zram0/`. Record your distribution and kernel versions, and note whether the symptom is steady or intermittent. The setup and available controls vary by system and kernel build.

Use your system’s existing monitoring tools to observe CPU activity and memory or swap pressure during the affected interval. At roughly the same time, inspect the device’s counters:
/sys/block/zram<id>/mm_stat— memory and page statistics./sys/block/zram<id>/io_stat— I/O error and freed-page counters./sys/block/zram<id>/stat— block-layer statistics./sys/block/zram<id>/bd_stat— backing-device statistics, if that optional feature is configured and the file is present.
Take another set of observations after the slowdown ends or during a comparable normal interval. This comparison is more informative than a single reading. The kernel documentation describes these interfaces and the zramctl utility; zramctl is maintained by util-linux, so check the help or manual installed on your system for supported options.

Interpret the counters together
Memory allocation and compression
mm_stat reports original data size, compressed data size, and total memory used, along with memory limits and other page counters. Total memory used is not simply the compressed payload: it also includes allocator fragmentation and metadata. Compare the values over time, and do not treat a large configured zram disk size as evidence that all of that capacity is currently consuming RAM.

If a memory limit is configured, compare it with mem_used_total and the other relevant mm_stat fields. A high allocation or rising stored-data value shows what the device is using or handling; by itself, it does not establish why CPU use rose.

I/O and device activity
io_stat includes failed reads, failed writes, invalid I/O, and freed-page notifications. The device’s stat file provides block-layer statistics. Compare these counters across the affected and normal intervals rather than reading an isolated number as a diagnosis. A counter that rises alongside the symptom is a lead to investigate, not proof of causation.
Compression algorithm
Inspect comp_algorithm to see which compression algorithms are available and which one is selected. Availability depends on kernel support, and algorithm parameters are specific to the algorithm. The kernel documentation does not name a best algorithm for every workload; changing one blindly may trade CPU work against memory savings in a way that is unhelpful for your system.

Check whether backing-device writeback is configured
zram can use a backing device for writeback only when the relevant kernel support and system configuration are present. Do not assume your machine is using it. If writeback is configured, inspect bd_stat and the applicable writeback settings to see whether pages are being sent to storage. The kernel documentation describes writeback of idle or incompressible pages and cautions that substantial writes to flash can raise wear concerns; it also documents writeback limits. Availability and controls vary with the kernel and setup.

Before changing a setting, compare the same CPU, memory-pressure, and zram measurements across the slowdown and a normal interval. Consider other busy processes and system pressure as well. If the evidence points to a plausible configuration issue, change one setting at a time, confirm that the control exists for your kernel, and repeat the comparison under a similar workload. Do not assume that switching algorithms, disabling zram, or adding hardware will fix the problem without evidence from the affected system.

Why resetting zram is not a first diagnostic step
Resetting a zram device frees all memory allocated to it and sets its disk size to zero. The disk size must be configured again before the device can be reused. Preserve your observations first, and follow your distribution’s service or configuration procedure if a reset is necessary; it is a disruptive operation, not routine cleanup.
