To document an architecture project through a website, build a case study that explains the brief, design decisions, process and verified outcome, then pair a dated full-page screenshot with close-up crops that make important details readable. The full-page image shows the page’s hierarchy and sequence; it should support—not replace—the explanation, drawings and process evidence that show how the work was made.
How do I present an architecture project?
Present the project as evidence of your skills and process, not just as a collection of finished images. Syracuse Architecture puts the distinction plainly: “Your portfolio is not about the projects. The portfolio is about YOUR SKILLS and YOUR PROCESS.” That means a reader should be able to understand what the project asked of you, how you responded, what you contributed and what the finished work demonstrates.

Start with a project snapshot
Give readers the basic facts before asking them to interpret images. Include the project name, location or site, client or brief where you have permission to identify them, your role, collaborators, timeline, status and material constraints. Label proposed, in-progress and completed work accurately.
A compact snapshot can work as a fact panel near the beginning of the case study. Distinguish your responsibilities from the team’s: for example, identify whether you led concept development, produced drawings, directed visualization, designed the website, coordinated consultants or edited the final presentation. If a firm, school, photographer or client supplied material, credit that contribution rather than implying that you made it. State constraints that shaped the result, such as a limited site, an inherited identity, a fixed launch date, a restricted content system or an approval requirement. Those facts help a reader judge the decisions fairly.

Explain the design intent
State the problem the project addressed, who it was for and the architectural or content strategy you pursued. Then connect key decisions to those needs: explain what you chose, what alternatives or constraints mattered, and why the resulting design makes sense in context.
Write the intent as a chain of reasoning rather than a slogan. Describe the audience’s need, the condition you observed, the opportunity you identified and the move you made. A website case study might explain why a long-scroll narrative was chosen for a building with a sequential visitor experience, or why a restrained type system was used to let drawings carry the visual emphasis. A physical project might connect circulation, daylight, structure or material decisions to the brief. Keep claims proportional to the evidence: if you have no measured post-occupancy result, describe the intended effect instead of presenting it as a proven outcome.
Show process evidence
Use selected sketches, diagrams, models, iterations, prototypes and screenshots to make the problem-solving visible. The University of Florida’s portfolio guidance describes portfolios as a way to demonstrate technical and creative skills and recommends process documentation supported by high-quality images. Choose evidence that advances the story rather than including every intermediate artifact.
Sequence process material chronologically or by question. A site diagram can establish the initial condition; a set of options can show the alternatives considered; a model photograph can reveal a spatial test; and a later drawing or interface prototype can show how the decision was resolved. Annotate only what helps interpretation: point out the changed axis, removed program, revised hierarchy or tested interaction. Avoid a gallery of nearly identical iterations with no explanation. One strong comparison, accompanied by a sentence about what changed and why, is more persuasive than a dozen unexplained files.
Report outcomes and reflection honestly
Include outcomes only when you can verify them. Explain what changed after launch if you know, and identify what you would improve or investigate next. If results are not available, say so rather than implying an unmeasured impact.
Separate completion from success. A finished render, approved drawing set or launched page proves that a deliverable exists; it does not automatically prove that users understood it, that a building performed as intended or that a client achieved a business result. Identify the evidence you do have, such as an approved milestone, a documented change, a recorded launch date or direct client feedback, and label its source and scope. A short reflection can name a trade-off you would revisit, a test you would run earlier or a detail that deserves further development.
How do I create an architecture portfolio that reads clearly?
Design the portfolio around the reader’s decisions. A reviewer may scan dozens of projects, while a prospective client may want to know whether you can solve a particular problem. Put the project proposition, your role and the strongest evidence near the top, then let the longer process unfold for readers who want depth.
Use a repeatable case-study structure
- Snapshot: identify the project, site, brief, role, collaborators, timeline, status and constraints.
- Question: describe the problem or opportunity and the audience affected by it.
- Approach: explain the strategy and the criteria used to make decisions.
- Evidence: show drawings, models, iterations, prototypes and interface states with captions.
- Resolution: present the completed architecture or website and explain its hierarchy.
- Outcome: report verified changes, then add a concise reflection.
This structure also makes updates easier. If a project moves from proposal to construction or a website receives a later release, you can update the status and outcome without rewriting the entire narrative. Keep the original capture and notes so the earlier state remains identifiable.
Choose evidence for a claim
Before adding an image, write the sentence it is meant to support. A plan may prove organizational logic; a section may prove a relationship in height; a material photograph may prove a texture or junction; a full-page website capture may prove hierarchy and pacing. If an image cannot support a specific claim, remove it or move it to a secondary gallery. This discipline keeps a long case study from becoming a scrapbook.

How do I show a website design case study?
Use one complete page capture to establish the website’s visual hierarchy and flow, then add readable crops of significant sections. The overview gives context; the crops let readers inspect details that would otherwise shrink too far to read.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Set the context. Identify what page the reader is seeing, its purpose and how it relates to the architecture project or portfolio.
- Show the complete page. Use a full-page capture to establish the order of the navigation, hero, content modules and footer.
- Add focused details. Crop important typography, diagrams, architectural drawings, interactions or content modules. Each crop should answer a specific question about the design.
- Write captions that interpret. Tell readers what design decision or evidence to notice, not merely that the image is a screenshot.
- Explain complex visuals in text. A screenshot can show a drawing or interface, but the surrounding case study should supply the context needed to understand it.
Drupal’s case-study guidance likewise recommends a primary screenshot, additional images of significant features, alt text, high resolution and web optimization. Google’s image guidance supports relevant cropping and providing context for images. Use those principles to decide what belongs in the overview, what needs a close-up and what needs prose.
Build a useful image set
Think in levels rather than in a single hero image. The first level is the complete page, showing sequence from navigation through footer. The second level contains crops of the hero, navigation, a representative content module, a drawing or diagram, an interaction state and the footer when those areas carry important decisions. A third level can be a separate drawing, model or process artifact that cannot be understood inside the website frame. Number or label the images so captions and references remain unambiguous.
Keep crop boundaries honest. Do not enlarge a tiny type sample until it becomes soft and misleading, and do not remove surrounding elements when that context is necessary to understand a decision. If a crop omits navigation or a legend, say so in the caption. When a frame shows a responsive change, identify the viewport state instead of presenting it as the universal page.
How can I take a full-page screenshot of a website?
First freeze and record the reference state; then capture the full page at desktop and mobile widths, check whether lazy-loaded content appeared, and preserve both an archival master and web-ready derivatives. A full-page capture is most useful when its source and conditions are documented.
- Confirm permission and privacy. Get approval before showing client or private material. Redact personal information and avoid exposing data visible only because you are logged in unless it is authorized for publication.
- Record the reference state. Save the page URL, capture date, viewport width, browser and whether you were logged in. This context makes it possible to distinguish a dated record from the current live site.
- Capture desktop and mobile states. Capture each separately. Preserve the complete scroll length when page rhythm matters, but do not make one extremely long image the only way to inspect the work.
- Check loading before capture. Confirm that images and other content that load as the page scrolls have appeared. If the capture omits content, revisit the page state or use a capture method that loads lazy images before taking the full-page image.
- Keep two asset levels. Preserve a high-resolution master separately from web-sized derivatives. Drupal recommends pre-scaling uploads and removing unnecessary metadata; Google recommends appropriately sized images and consistent screenshot treatment.
- Pair overview and detail. Use the full image to show sequence, then make crops for anything that becomes unreadable at overview scale.
- Publish with text alternatives and captions. Give meaningful images concise, descriptive alt text and explain complex visuals in surrounding text. Add a caption that tells readers what to notice.
- Review the published result. Test desktop and mobile widths, zoom, keyboard navigation, loading behavior and whether the screenshots remain legible. Keep a dated static capture even when you also link a live page or prototype.
Preserve a useful record
Keep the original capture and compressed derivatives in separate locations, use descriptive filenames and retain the capture date with the asset or its record. Credit collaborators, client organizations, photographers and firms where applicable. A live page can change or disappear, so a dated static record helps preserve the state you actually presented.
A filename should identify the project, page, viewport and date without relying on a folder someone may later reorganize. For example, a pattern such as project-home-desktop-1440px-2026-10-25-master.png distinguishes the archival file from a smaller derivative. Use a matching convention for crops and mobile captures. Keep a small text record with the URL, browser, viewport, login state, permissions and any redactions; this is especially valuable when several people contribute assets.
Capture dynamic pages deliberately
Web pages may change as you scroll. Menus can collapse, videos can begin, animations can settle and images can load only after entering the viewport. Wait for the intended state and capture consistently. If a cookie notice, newsletter prompt or chat widget obscures the design, document whether it was dismissed, hidden or part of the visitor experience. Never remove an element in editing if doing so changes the claim you are making; instead, explain the capture condition. For a logged-in or password-protected page, obtain explicit authorization and avoid including account names, personal data or private project information.
How should I prepare screenshot files for the web?
Start with the high-resolution master, then make derivatives sized for the place where they will appear. Pre-scaling reduces unnecessary download weight, and removing metadata that is not needed for display can further reduce the file. Keep the master untouched so a new crop or higher-resolution export can be made later.

Apply one visual treatment across the set: consistent viewport framing, background, border treatment and labeling. Do not mix a browser-window mockup with a bare page capture unless the difference communicates something meaningful. Check the derivative at its actual display size, not only while zoomed in an image editor. A file that looks sharp at full resolution may still render as an unreadable strip in the article.
Choose the format that preserves the evidence. Use a lossless or high-quality export for fine linework and small type, and a more compressed derivative only when it remains legible. Keep a separate crop for detail instead of forcing one oversized file to carry every label. The goal is an efficient page that still lets readers inspect the decisions you claim to show.
Which presentation format should I use?
Choose by fidelity, readability, explanatory clarity, loading cost, accessibility and maintenance. There is no single format that is best for every case study.
| Format | What it shows well | Trade-off to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Single full-page screenshot | Page rhythm, hierarchy and the sequence of sections in one view. | Small labels and body text may be unreadable, and the image is not interactive. |
| Full-page screenshot plus annotated crops | The overview and readable evidence of important decisions or details. | Requires additional editorial work and asset preparation. |
| Live page or prototype plus dated static capture | Interaction and responsive behavior, alongside a durable record of a specific state. | The live version can change, break or disappear; retain the static capture as evidence. |
For most case studies where visual decisions matter, the overview-plus-crops approach balances page context with legibility. Add a live page or prototype when interaction is part of the work and you can maintain the link.

Match the format to the claim
Use a static overview when the claim concerns hierarchy, pacing or the relationship among sections. Use a crop when the claim concerns typography, a diagram, a drawing label or a small control. Use a live page or prototype when the claim concerns hover behavior, transitions, filtering, scrolling, form feedback or responsive changes. Link the live version with its capture date and, if appropriate, note the version or release represented by the static image.
Do not assume that a PDF is automatically more professional. A PDF can be useful for a submission with fixed limits, while a web page can provide better navigation and updates. The AIA Awards FAQ gives one example of a submission document limited to one PDF file, 20 MB, 15 images and 20 total pages. Those figures belong to that awards context; they are not a universal rule for architecture portfolios.
How should I make architecture screenshots accessible?
Do not treat the image alone as the explanation. Provide text alternatives for meaningful images, enough surrounding context for complex visuals, and a published page that readers can navigate and zoom.
- Alt text: Describe the meaningful purpose or content of the image concisely. Avoid using the caption as a substitute for alt text when the two serve different purposes.
- Complex visuals: Explain the important relationships, labels or design reasoning in nearby text so a reader is not required to infer them from the image alone.
- Contrast and zoom: Check that text and controls are distinguishable and that content remains usable when enlarged.
- Structure and keyboard access: Use meaningful headings and verify that the published page can be navigated by keyboard.
- Testing: Combine manual review with automated checkers. ADA.gov guidance cautions that a clean automated report alone does not establish that a site is accessible.
Squarespace’s portfolio guidance also notes that image descriptions and captions help search engines understand images and support accessibility when publishing an online portfolio.

A caption is visible editorial guidance. It can identify the decision, compare two states or direct attention to a label. Alt text is an equivalent for someone who may not see the image; it should be concise and purposeful, not a transcription of every pixel. For a full-page capture, alt text might identify the page, its major sections and the fact that it is a dated desktop view. The nearby caption can then explain how the sequence supports the project narrative. For a diagram, include the relationship that matters in the text around it. If an image is purely decorative and adds no information, mark it appropriately rather than burdening a screen-reader user with a needless description.

Rights, credits and confidentiality
Confirm that you may show the website, drawings, photographs, fonts, client name and site information. Permission to work on a project does not always grant permission to publish every artifact. Ask the client or firm what may be identified, whether a launch date or address is sensitive and whether collaborators require a specific credit. Keep a private, unredacted master if your agreements allow it, but publish only the approved version.
Redact names, email addresses, account identifiers, unpublished budgets and other personal or confidential information. Check screenshots for browser tabs, notification banners, bookmarks and file paths that can reveal more than intended. If authorization is unavailable, omit the material or describe the project in anonymized terms without exposing protected information.
What should I check before publishing?
- Every project fact, role and outcome is accurate and appropriately authorized.
- Collaborators, organizations, photographers and firms receive credit where applicable.
- Personal or confidential information has been removed or approved for publication.
- The full-page capture has a date and the reference state is documented.
- Important details have readable crops rather than relying on a single long image.
- Images have descriptive filenames, useful alt text and captions that explain what matters.
- Originals and optimized derivatives are kept separately, and the published page has been checked at desktop and mobile widths.
- Headings follow a logical order, links have clear names and the page works with keyboard navigation and zoom.
- Live links, embedded prototypes and videos still load, while the static capture remains available if they fail.
Submission limits are context-specific. For example, the AIA Awards FAQ describes a portfolio document example for that awards submission as one PDF file no larger than 20 MB, with a maximum of 15 images and 20 total pages. Those limits apply to that context; they are not a universal architecture-portfolio specification.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How much time and maintenance should I plan?
Budget effort for selection, captioning, cropping, accessibility review and future updates, not only for the initial screenshot. A single full-page image is quick to insert but often creates follow-up work when readers cannot read it. An overview with focused crops takes longer to prepare, yet it reduces explanatory gaps and gives you reusable assets for presentations, applications and social posts.
Record the capture date and review live links periodically. If a page is redesigned, keep the old static record labeled with its date and update the case-study text so readers know which version they are viewing. When a prototype expires, replace the link or explain that only the dated capture remains. This maintenance practice protects the credibility of a portfolio that may be reviewed months or years after launch.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want to capture a public project page without configuring a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG or WebP, or a PDF. The full-page option loads lazy images, and the service accepts the parameter names other screenshot APIs use.
For a quick cURL capture, replace the example URL with the public project page you are authorized to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a static screenshot prove that a website interaction works?
No. A screenshot records a rendered state, not the behavior that led to it. If an interaction is part of your design claim, pair the image with a live page or prototype when available and explain the interaction in text.
Should I include architectural drawings as well as website screenshots?
Yes, when drawings are relevant evidence of the project or your contribution. A website capture documents how the work is presented online; it does not replace plans, sections, diagrams or other project material needed to understand the architecture.

Best Value
What if my project is still confidential?
Do not publish client, site or project details without authorization. Ask what may be shown; if approval is unavailable, omit the material or use only an anonymized account that does not expose protected information.
How can I make a very long page readable?
Keep the complete capture for hierarchy and sequence, then add crops of the navigation, hero, drawings, content modules and footer. Provide captions and surrounding text so readers do not have to zoom through one enormous image.
Do I need both desktop and mobile screenshots?
Capture both when responsive behavior or layout changes matter. Label each viewport and retain the complete scroll length where page rhythm is important, while using detail crops for small type and diagrams.
How many images should an architecture case study contain?
There is no universal number. Select the fewest images that prove the brief, process, decisions and outcome. Any limits imposed by an award or application belong to that submission, such as the AIA example of 15 images and 20 pages.
What should I do if the live page changes after I publish the case study?
Keep the dated static capture, record the original URL and capture conditions, and label the live link as a current or later version. Update the narrative when the change affects the claim you are making.
Is alt text enough for a complicated drawing or interface screenshot?
No. Use concise alt text for the image’s purpose and provide nearby text explaining important relationships, labels and decisions. Captions can direct attention, but they do not replace an equivalent explanation.
How do I show a page that required login?
Publish it only with explicit authorization. Record that the capture was logged in, remove personal or confidential data, and explain any restricted state that affects interpretation. If permission is unavailable, do not expose the private page.
The Bottom Line
A strong architecture case study combines a clear project narrative with evidence at the right scale. Document the brief, your role and process; capture the website in a dated, authorized desktop and mobile state; preserve a high-resolution master; add readable crops, captions and equivalent text; and test the published page for accessibility and durability. The full-page screenshot then does what it is best at—showing hierarchy and rhythm—while drawings, process artifacts and explanatory prose prove the thinking behind the work.
