You can reduce dependence on AI stocks without giving up a growth-oriented portfolio. The practical route is to spread equity exposure across industries, company sizes, investment styles and regions, then decide whether bonds or cash fit your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses. Diversification lowers the damage a single holding or theme can cause, but it does not guarantee gains or prevent a broad market decline. Start by examining your portfolio’s underlying holdings, set a risk level based on your goals rather than the latest winning sector, and use a written rebalancing rule.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov guide defines diversification as “The practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” That definition is useful here because the goal is not to predict when artificial-intelligence companies will rise or fall; it is to avoid making one theme responsible for your financial outcome.

What does diversification beyond AI stocks actually mean?
Diversification has two jobs. First, it spreads money among asset classes such as stocks, bonds and cash. Second, it spreads each asset class across different exposures, including sectors, company sizes, investment styles and countries. A portfolio can own several technology funds and still be concentrated if those funds hold the same large companies or depend on the same economic drivers.
A stock-only portfolio can be diversified across many markets and industries, yet it remains exposed to stock-market risk. Adding assets that behave differently can change the size and timing of losses, although bonds and cash introduce their own trade-offs. Diversification reduces reliance on any single holding or segment; it cannot eliminate investment risk, and a broad portfolio can underperform a concentrated winner for long periods.

How do I find out whether my portfolio is too dependent on AI?
Do not begin with fund names or the number of tickers you own. Begin with the securities’ actual holdings and the sectors those holdings represent. A fund marketed as broad may have substantial positions in the same large technology companies that dominate a separate technology or AI fund.
- List every account and holding. Include individual shares, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds and model portfolios. Record each position’s current value so you can see its influence on the whole portfolio.
- Look through each fund. Use the most recent holdings report or prospectus to identify large technology companies, AI-related businesses and positions classified in technology or communication services. Count the exposure that appears in more than one fund rather than treating each fund as independent.
- Group by economic driver. Two companies in different formal sectors can still depend on the same cloud spending, semiconductor demand, advertising cycle or interest-rate environment. Note those shared drivers alongside the official sector labels.
- Separate direct and indirect exposure. An individual AI company is direct exposure; a broad index that owns it is indirect exposure. Both affect concentration, even though the indirect position may be smaller.
- Write down what you do not know. If a fund does not disclose a clear sector breakdown or its holdings change frequently, treat that uncertainty as a reason to investigate before adding more money.
There is no current AI-concentration percentage that can be applied to every investor. Your result depends on the account type, fund selection, market prices and the date of measurement, so calculate it from your own holdings rather than borrowing a headline statistic.
How can I keep growth potential without being concentrated in technology?
Growth is not a synonym for one sector. You can seek long-term equity growth through several independent sources, each with different volatility and sensitivity to the economy.
Broaden across industries
Exposure to health care, industrial companies, financial services, consumer businesses, energy, utilities, materials and real-estate companies can reduce reliance on technology-specific demand. The objective is not to own every sector in equal proportions or to predict which one will lead next. It is to avoid having one industry determine the portfolio’s result.
Mix company sizes
Large companies, midsize companies and smaller companies can respond differently to financing conditions, domestic demand and competitive change. A portfolio that combines sizes has more than one source of potential expansion, but smaller companies can be more volatile and less financially resilient than established businesses.

Use growth and value styles deliberately
Growth-oriented companies are often priced for strong future expansion, while value-oriented companies are priced more modestly relative to measures such as earnings or assets. Their returns can diverge as interest rates, profits and investor expectations change. Adding value exposure is a diversification decision, not a promise that value will outperform growth.
Add international markets
Companies outside your home market provide exposure to different industries, currencies, regulations and economic cycles. International holdings can broaden the opportunity set and reduce dependence on one country’s market, while introducing currency movements, political risk and differences in accounting or investor protections. Decide how much foreign exposure fits your own jurisdiction and spending needs.
Prefer broad exposure over another narrow theme
Replacing an AI fund with a robotics, cloud-computing or semiconductor fund may change the label without changing the underlying concentration. Check the holdings, sector weights and revenue sources before treating a new fund as diversification.
What should I add to a portfolio that is heavy in AI stocks?
There is no universal replacement holding. The appropriate addition depends on whether your concentration problem is mainly one company, one sector, one country, one investment style or excessive stock exposure overall.
| Diversification source | What it can add | Trade-off to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Other equity sectors | Growth drivers that are less dependent on AI and technology spending | Sector cycles can still be volatile and can become concentrated if only a few industries are chosen |
| Different company sizes | Exposure to businesses at different stages of development | Smaller companies may fluctuate more and can be more sensitive to financing conditions |
| Value-oriented equities | A valuation and earnings profile different from high-expectation growth shares | Value can lag growth for extended periods |
| International equities | Different markets, currencies, industries and economic environments | Currency, political, regulatory and market-structure risks |
| High-quality bonds | Potentially lower portfolio volatility and a more stable asset class | Lower expected long-run returns than stocks and exposure to bond-price and credit risks |
| Cash | Liquidity for near-term spending and a reserve that does not track share prices in the same way | Long-term purchasing power can be reduced by inflation, and cash may not keep pace with equities |
These categories are building blocks, not prescriptions. A broad equity fund can still be appropriate for a growth investor, while a bond allocation can be appropriate for someone who cannot tolerate a large drawdown even with a long horizon. The sources do not establish a single percentage for any category.

How much of my portfolio should be in AI stocks?
No regulator or primary source in this material sets an AI-specific percentage. A suitable allocation must reflect your goals, time horizon, ability to withstand losses and willingness to remain invested during a downturn. Treat an AI position as one component of your chosen equity allocation, not as a separate promise of superior returns.
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) gives a general rule of thumb for experienced investors seeking higher potential returns: limit high-risk investments to 10% of a portfolio. The FCA page was last updated 16 May 2025. This is UK consumer guidance, not an AI-specific limit, not individualized advice and not a universal rule for investors in other jurisdictions. Whether a particular AI share or fund meets the FCA’s description of high risk requires an individual assessment.
Instead of asking for a magic AI number, ask whether a severe fall in that theme would force you to sell, miss a goal or abandon your plan. If the answer is yes, reduce the dependence through a planned allocation change rather than waiting for a market shock.
How should I choose an allocation for my goals?
Allocation is a risk decision before it is a product decision. Investor.gov describes allocation changes as decisions driven by goals and circumstances, with rebalancing used to restore the allocation you selected.
1. Identify when the money is needed
Money required soon has less time to recover from a stock-market decline than money intended for a distant goal. Separate near-term spending, medium-term obligations and long-term capital before deciding how much volatility you can accept.

2. Test both ability and willingness to take risk
Your ability to take risk reflects income stability, emergency reserves, debt and the date of the goal. Your willingness is how you actually react when prices fall. A portfolio is unsuitable if either the financial capacity or the emotional capacity is missing.
3. Choose the mix before selecting funds
Decide the broad proportions of equities, bonds and cash, then decide how equities will be spread across sectors, sizes, styles and regions. This prevents a newly popular fund from dictating your risk level.
4. Consider the cost of being wrong
A more diversified portfolio may trail a concentrated AI position during a technology surge. A concentrated portfolio may suffer a larger loss if expectations reverse. Choose the trade-off you can maintain through both outcomes, not the one that looks best in a recent chart.

Evaluate every candidate on the same five questions rather than treating every non-AI investment as interchangeable.
- What is the diversification source? Is it adding a sector, company-size exposure, value or growth style, geography or a different asset class?
- What drives its returns? Does it rely on the same companies, customers, interest-rate assumptions or economic conditions already present in your portfolio?
- How much volatility can it add or remove? Equities generally offer more long-term growth potential and larger short-term swings; bonds may add stability while lowering expected long-run returns.
- What is the scope? A broad fund and a narrow thematic fund can both be ETFs or mutual funds. The wrapper does not tell you how diversified the holdings are.
- What will implementation cost? Check the fund’s scope, overlapping holdings, expenses, trading costs and possible tax consequences. Current product fees and specific fund comparisons are outside the evidence available here, so verify them before investing.
How do I implement the change without creating a new concentration?
- Set a target allocation in writing. Record the intended ranges for asset classes and the equity dimensions you want to cover. Include a maximum exposure you are willing to tolerate for any single company or narrow theme if that is relevant to your plan.
- Direct new contributions first. Sending future contributions to underweighted areas can reduce concentration without immediately selling appreciated holdings. This approach does not remove tax or market risk, but it may reduce trading.
- Make sales deliberately. If selling is necessary, review the account’s tax treatment, unrealized gains, transaction costs and any restrictions. The best sequence differs between taxable and tax-advantaged accounts.
- Check the combined holdings after the trade. Recalculate look-through exposure so a broad fund has not recreated the same large-company or technology concentration.
- Choose a rebalancing trigger. You can review on a calendar schedule or act when an allocation moves beyond a threshold you selected in advance. The rule should be simple enough to follow when markets are stressful.
- Document why you changed course. Record the goal, the target allocation and the reason for the change. Do not rewrite the plan solely because one sector has recently outperformed.
What should I watch for when rebalancing?
Price movements can push a portfolio away from its intended risk level even when you do nothing. Rebalancing restores the chosen mix; it is not a forecast that one asset will outperform the other.
Best Value
Before trading, account for taxes and transaction costs. Selling a winner in a taxable account can create a tax bill, while buying and selling can incur commissions, spreads or other charges depending on the product and broker. Using new contributions to correct an underweight can reduce the number of sales, but it may not be sufficient when the imbalance is large.
Review the underlying holdings after each rebalance. Two funds that look different by name can share many of the same companies, and a narrow sector fund can increase concentration even when it is packaged as a diversified-looking vehicle.
What mistakes undermine diversification beyond AI?
- Counting tickers instead of exposures. Ten funds can still provide one dominant bet when their largest holdings overlap.
- Swapping one theme for another. A new technology label does not necessarily add a new economic driver.
- Chasing the latest leader. Allocation should follow goals and circumstances, not an assumption that the most successful recent sector will continue leading.
- Ignoring the asset-class decision. Broadening stocks across sectors does not provide the same stability as adding bonds or cash.
- Using a rule from the wrong jurisdiction. The FCA’s 10% high-risk guideline is UK consumer guidance and should not be presented as a global portfolio requirement.
- Rebalancing without a tax plan. A mathematically tidy allocation can have an avoidable after-tax cost if sales are made without checking the account.
- Assuming diversification guarantees an outcome. A diversified portfolio can fall, and it can lag a concentrated AI position during a period when that theme leads.
What is the practical way to keep growth while reducing AI concentration?
Map the holdings you already own, identify repeated companies and drivers, set a risk level tied to your goals, then broaden equity exposure across sectors, sizes, styles and regions. Decide separately whether bonds or cash are needed for stability and liquidity. Implement the plan gradually where appropriate, use contributions to help correct underweights, and rebalance according to a written rule that includes taxes and costs. This process preserves access to long-term equity growth without making one narrow theme responsible for the entire portfolio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a diversified portfolio still lose money when AI stocks fall?
Yes. Diversification reduces dependence on a single segment, but stocks across many sectors can decline together during a broad market sell-off. The purpose is to change the concentration and recovery profile, not to create a guaranteed floor under the account value.
Should I sell every AI holding to be properly diversified?
Not necessarily. A broad portfolio may still include profitable AI-related companies as a modest part of its equity exposure. The decision is whether the combined position matches your written risk limit and whether you could maintain it through a severe decline.
How often should I check overlapping fund holdings?
Check when you buy a new fund, when a fund changes its mandate or holdings, and during your planned portfolio review. A calendar date alone is less important than using the same look-through method each time so repeated exposures are visible.

Are international shares automatically less correlated with U.S. technology stocks?
No. International markets can contain large technology companies and can react to the same global interest-rate or economic shocks. Review country, sector and company exposures rather than assuming that a foreign label supplies diversification by itself.
What if reducing AI exposure creates a large taxable gain?
Compare the tax and trading cost of selling with the risk of keeping the concentration. You may be able to redirect new contributions first or spread sales over time, but the appropriate action depends on your account, jurisdiction and tax circumstances.
