Start by auditing what you own—not by choosing a supposedly safe percentage for AI. Count your direct AI-related holdings, then look through each mutual fund and ETF to identify repeated companies and sector exposure. Several funds can own the same large technology companies, while AI-related risk can also reach infrastructure, energy, real estate and financial assets.
Next, set an allocation that fits your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and tax situation. Diversify across asset classes and within them, then use a defined schedule or drift bands to review and rebalance. There is no universal AI allocation threshold supported by the cited investor guidance.

Why can an AI-heavy portfolio be less diversified than it looks?
Owning several funds does not necessarily mean owning several independent sources of risk. Funds may hold many of the same large technology companies, so a portfolio spread across multiple fund names can still depend heavily on a small group of businesses and on the same investment cycle.
Direct holdings are only part of the picture. The Pensions Regulator cautions that AI’s influence can extend through the infrastructure needed to build and operate AI systems, as well as energy, real estate and financial assets. A company or fund does not need “AI” in its name to be affected by the spending, financing or economic changes associated with AI.

This matters because diversification is about how the whole portfolio may respond to different conditions, not how many positions appear on a statement. The SEC describes diversification as spreading money among different investments to reduce risk. It can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot eliminate market losses.
How do I audit my portfolio’s AI exposure?
Build a look-through inventory of your investments before deciding what to change. The aim is to identify direct exposure, repeated fund holdings and broader dependencies—not to label every technology company as an AI investment.

- List every account and holding. Include individual stocks, mutual funds, ETFs, bonds, cash and any other investments you are assessing. Record each position’s current value and the percentage of the portfolio it represents.
- Separate direct holdings from fund holdings. Mark investments you selected specifically for exposure to AI-related companies or businesses. For each fund, find its current top holdings and sector weights in the fund’s published materials; weights can change, so check the latest available information.
- Look for repeated names. Compare the top holdings across funds. If the same large technology companies appear in several funds, count that exposure together rather than treating each fund as a separate source of diversification. Investor.gov specifically advises investors to compare top holdings when checking fund overlap.
- Review the sectors and business dependencies. Consider whether holdings are concentrated in technology or may rely on related infrastructure, energy, real estate or financing. The Pensions Regulator’s warning is a reminder to consider these indirect links as well as an investment’s label.
- Summarize the result at portfolio level. Note which exposures are direct, which come through funds, and which are potential indirect dependencies. Avoid adding an indirect exposure to a precise percentage unless you have a defensible way to measure it; the official guidance cited here does not provide a universal calculation method.
Your inventory is a decision aid, not a forecast. It can show overlap and concentration, but it cannot tell you exactly how a holding will perform if expectations for AI investment or earnings change.
How do I decide whether my AI exposure is too high?
There is no official, universally appropriate AI percentage in the guidance cited here. Whether an exposure is too high depends on your financial goal, when you will need the money, your ability and willingness to bear losses, and your tax circumstances.

The SEC’s investor guidance treats asset allocation as personal to those factors. Use them to choose an overall mix first, then assess whether the portfolio’s combined AI-related exposure sits comfortably within that plan. A large position can be especially consequential if it is money you expect to use soon or if other parts of your finances are exposed to the same risks.
Ask yourself:
- When will I need this money? A shorter time horizon may leave less room to recover from a sharp decline before a planned withdrawal.
- How much loss can I tolerate financially and emotionally? These are related but different questions. An allocation that looks acceptable on paper may be difficult to maintain during a market drop.
- What is the portfolio meant to fund? Retirement, a near-term purchase and long-term growth can call for different levels of risk.
- What else affects my finances? Tax constraints and existing exposure outside the portfolio can change the practical choices available to you.
If you cannot explain why the combined exposure fits your plan, treat that as a prompt to review the allocation—not as proof that a particular percentage is automatically unsafe. Individual tax, retirement or risk constraints may warrant advice from a suitably qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
What should I hold to diversify beyond AI-heavy stocks?
Build breadth across asset classes and within each class. The SEC recommends diversification both between asset categories and within them; FINRA likewise recommends spreading investments across and within major asset classes, sectors, bond issuers and maturities.
A portfolio may include a mix of broad domestic and international equities, high-quality bonds, cash or cash equivalents, and other suitable diversifiers. Those are categories to evaluate, not a prescribed allocation or a guarantee that any one holding will offset technology losses.

Equities: broaden geography, sector, size and style
For stock exposure, check whether your investments add meaningful breadth beyond the same large U.S. technology companies. Geography, sector, company size and investment style are useful dimensions to inspect. A fund can hold many stocks and still be narrowly focused, so review its mandate and actual holdings rather than relying on the number of positions alone.
Bonds: check issuer, type and maturity
For bond exposure, examine who issued the bonds, what types they are and when they mature. Diversifying among issuers and maturities can avoid relying on one issuer or one narrow part of the bond market. FINRA identifies these as important dimensions of bond diversification.
Cash and other possible diversifiers: fit them to the job
Cash or cash equivalents may be relevant to money needed for nearer-term purposes, while other diversifiers should be assessed for their risks and how they may behave relative to the rest of the portfolio. Do not assume an asset is a useful counterweight merely because it is different from a technology stock; consider its underlying drivers, liquidity and role in your plan.
How should I compare diversification options?
Compare what an investment adds to the portfolio, not just its label or the number of securities it contains. These questions help expose overlap and trade-offs before you buy, sell or redirect contributions.

| What to assess | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure to the AI cycle | Does this investment rely on the same AI investment and earnings drivers as holdings I already own? | Different names can still share important economic dependencies. |
| Asset-class behavior | How might it behave relative to equities during market stress? | A different asset class may change the portfolio’s mix of risks, but does not guarantee protection from losses. |
| Geographic and sector breadth | Does it add exposure outside U.S. mega-cap technology? | More breadth can reduce reliance on a narrow group of companies or sectors. |
| Overlap | Do the proposed funds repeat top holdings I already own? | Repeated holdings can make the portfolio more concentrated than the fund count suggests. |
| Liquidity and implementation cost | What are the spread, fees, tax effects and trading implications? | Costs and constraints affect the practical result of making a change. |
| Risk capacity and horizon | Does this allocation fit when I will need the money? | An investment’s risk should be considered in relation to the goal it serves. |
Broad mutual funds and ETFs can spread exposure efficiently, but a narrowly focused fund may not diversify a portfolio. Investor.gov recommends checking fund holdings for overlap. Compare the underlying holdings and sector exposure of a proposed fund with what you already own before treating it as a new source of diversification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I rebalance without making a rushed market call?
Rebalancing brings your portfolio back toward a target allocation after market movements cause it to drift. It is a way to maintain the risk mix you chose, not a reliable method for predicting which investment will do best next.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Write down target allocations. Set them in the context of your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance and tax situation. The cited authorities do not establish one target or AI quota suitable for everyone.
- Choose a review rule. The SEC discusses periodically rebalancing, and Investor.gov notes that investors commonly use either calendar reviews or preset percentage bands. A calendar rule checks at chosen intervals; a band rule prompts a review when an allocation moves sufficiently far from its target.
- Compare current allocations with targets. Use your portfolio inventory to see which categories are overweight or underweight, including repeated exposure across funds.
- Decide how to correct drift. The SEC identifies three approaches: sell from overweight categories, buy underweight categories, or direct new contributions to underweight areas. Choose an approach that fits your circumstances rather than acting solely on a market headline.
- Check taxes and trading costs before placing trades. The SEC specifically advises considering tax consequences and transaction fees. The effect depends on your jurisdiction and account, so check the rules and costs that apply to you.
A review schedule or drift band makes the process more deliberate, but the appropriate interval or band is not specified by the cited guidance. Avoid treating a routine portfolio check as a reason to trade when the allocation remains consistent with your plan.
What mistakes should I avoid when reducing concentration?
- Counting funds instead of exposures. Multiple funds may repeat the same holdings. Inspect underlying positions and sector weights.
- Using fund names as a complete risk assessment. A fund’s label does not show every indirect link to AI-related investment and infrastructure. Consider the portfolio’s broader dependencies.
- Applying a fixed AI quota. The cited official guidance supports personalized allocation, not one threshold that defines a safe or excessive AI exposure for everyone.
- Assuming diversification prevents losses. It is intended to reduce concentration risk; it does not eliminate the risk of market declines.
- Trading without checking consequences. Taxes and transaction fees can affect the cost of rebalancing. Review them before implementing a change.
- Changing the plan in response to a single forecast. The exposure audit and allocation should serve your financial goals and risk capacity, rather than rely on certainty about how the AI cycle will unfold.
The FCA describes diversification as choosing different kinds of investments across markets that do not rely on the same things to do well at the same time. That principle is a useful test for any proposed addition: ask whether it genuinely adds a different source of exposure, rather than simply another route to the same one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I sell all my AI-related investments to diversify?
Not necessarily. Diversification is about the portfolio’s overall mix, and the cited guidance does not call for eliminating any one sector. Consider how a change fits your goals and review applicable tax consequences and trading costs before acting.
Can a portfolio tracker tell me exactly how much AI exposure I have?
A tracker may help organize holdings and reveal overlap, but an exact figure depends on how it classifies companies and indirect dependencies. Review its categories and underlying data rather than treating a single AI-exposure number as definitive.

Does diversification mean my portfolio will avoid losses if AI stocks fall?
No. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot eliminate market losses. Investments that appear different may also share economic dependencies, so consider what drives each holding.
