To stop a chatbot from using new conversations to train its models, you must change that provider’s own privacy setting. In ChatGPT, switch off Improve the model for everyone; in Gemini, turn off Keep Activity; in Microsoft Copilot, disable Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations; and on X, deselect the Grok training option under Grok & Third-party Collaborators. These are generally forward-looking controls: they do not automatically erase old chats, memories, feedback, safety records, advertising data or information held by a connected app. The steps below cover the current consumer interfaces, explain what each switch does not cover, and show how to handle deletion and business accounts separately.
What does turning off AI training actually change?
A training opt-out tells a provider not to add eligible future conversations to model-training datasets. It is not the same as deleting a conversation, removing a saved memory, stopping the service from processing a prompt, or opting out of advertising and safety operations.

- Training exclusion: prevents the provider from using covered future content to improve or fine-tune models.
- Service processing: still lets the chatbot receive, analyze and return an answer. Providers may also process data for abuse prevention, security, reliability and legal compliance.
- History and deletion: controls whether a conversation remains in your account and when it is erased. A training switch normally leaves existing history intact.
- Memory and personalization: saved facts, profile preferences and recommendation settings have their own controls.
- Feedback: sending a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or other explicit feedback can create an exception. Some providers may use the attached conversation to investigate or improve the system even after a general opt-out.
- Connected services: an extension, custom bot, business workspace or third-party integration may apply separate retention and training terms.
Menu names and availability can vary by country, age, subscription, signed-in state and workspace administrator. If a setting is absent, do not assume that private browsing or deleting the app changes server-side use.

How do I stop ChatGPT from training on my chats?
For a personal ChatGPT account, turn off Improve the model for everyone. The setting follows your signed-in account across the web and mobile apps.

Web instructions
- Open ChatGPT and select your account menu.
- Choose Settings, then Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone and select Done if prompted.
iPhone and Android instructions
- Open the sidebar and tap your profile icon.
- Open Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
New conversations are excluded from OpenAI model training after the switch is off, but regular and archived chats remain in your history. Deleting those chats requires a separate history action. If you later submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, OpenAI says the conversation associated with that feedback may still be used for training.
Use Temporary Chat for a one-off private session
Start a new Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation in history or memory. OpenAI states that Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not create memories and are not used to improve models. OpenAI also says it retains them for up to 30 days for safety purposes before deletion, so this mode is not an instant-erasure guarantee.

Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API offerings have different defaults from personal accounts. OpenAI says inputs and outputs from those offerings are not used to train models by default, but an organization’s administrator, contract and retention settings still govern access and deletion.
How do I turn off Gemini activity and training?
Gemini uses Keep Activity as the main control for saved activity and model-improvement use. Turning it off stops future chats from appearing in Gemini Activity and from being used to train Google’s AI models unless you choose to send Google feedback.
- Go to
gemini.google.comwhile signed in. - Open Settings & help.
- Select Activity, then tap or click On.
- Choose Turn off to preserve existing activity, or Turn off and delete activity to remove the saved activity shown in that control.
What remains after Keep Activity is off?
Google can retain Gemini conversations for up to 72 hours so the service can answer requests, process feedback and protect Google, users and the public. The training switch therefore does not prevent the short-term processing required to operate Gemini or investigate abuse.

Gemini Apps Activity is set to auto-delete after 18 months by default. Google provides options for three months, 18 months, 36 months or no auto-delete, so choose the period that matches your retention needs rather than treating the training switch as a deletion setting.
Audio, video and screen sharing
Audio and Gemini Live video or screen-share data have a separate improvement control. The available policy describes that control as off by default; check it independently if you use voice, camera or screen-sharing features.
How do I opt out of Microsoft Copilot conversation training?
Consumer Copilot exposes separate switches for typed conversations and voice conversations. Disable both if you use both modes.
Signed-in web
- Select your profile icon, then your profile name.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations.
Windows and macOS
- Select the profile icon.
- Choose Settings, then Privacy.
- Disable both training switches.
Mobile apps
- Open the menu and tap the profile icon.
- Choose Account, then Privacy.
- Disable Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations.
Microsoft describes this opt-out as excluding future conversation activities from training. It does not exclude other general product or system improvement, advertising, digital-safety, security or compliance uses, so do not interpret it as a complete data-processing opt-out.
History, memory and personalization are separate
Copilot conversation history is retained for 18 months by default, and Microsoft provides controls to delete individual items or all history. You can disable personalization or delete all saved memory without deleting conversation history; perform those actions separately if you want a clean account profile.

Microsoft 365 Copilot
Copilot inside Microsoft 365 with an organizational account follows enterprise data-protection terms and can differ substantially from consumer Copilot. Your organization’s administrator may control retention, logging, eDiscovery and whether the consumer privacy panel is available.
How do I stop Grok from using my X data?
Grok’s X setting covers more than chats typed into the bot. It includes public X data and your interactions, inputs and results with Grok and xAI, so changing only a chatbot-local preference would not cover the full dataset.
- On X, open Privacy and safety.
- Choose Data sharing and personalization.
- Open Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Deselect Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
X says opting out means the data will not be used for training and that you can continue using Grok normally. Review this setting again after major X account or privacy-interface changes because it governs public-post data as well as direct prompts.
Can I disable training in Claude?
A comparison dated October 17, 2026 reports a Settings → Privacy → Help improve Claude control for consumer Free, Pro and Max accounts. According to that report, turning it off excludes future chats from training, while safety-classifier exceptions may still apply.
Anthropic’s live policy and account interface should be treated as authoritative because the reported setting is not confirmed here by an official help page. If the control is missing, use the current privacy documentation for your country and plan rather than assuming that deleting a chat changes training eligibility.

Does Meta AI offer a training opt-out?
There is no single, universal consumer switch documented for Meta AI. In the United States, users generally do not see a simple control covering all Meta AI training or ad-targeting use, while account and regional rules can differ.
Open the privacy controls available in your Meta account and inspect the notices for the specific product, country and age category. Treat any setting that mentions suggestions, ads, activity or connected services as distinct from model-training exclusion; a control in one Meta app may not govern another.
How are deletion, memory, personalization and training different?

Deleting an old chat can remove it from your visible account without changing how a provider handled a previously eligible training record. Conversely, turning off training can leave the chat visible until you delete it. Check both controls when you need both outcomes.

- The service must process the prompt to generate a reply and may keep limited records for fraud prevention, security, debugging or legal obligations.
- A feedback submission can attach the conversation to a quality-review or training workflow, depending on the provider.
- Safety classifiers and abuse investigators may inspect content under separate rules.
- Advertising, personalization and recommendation systems can use other account signals unless their own settings are changed.
- Files sent through a plug-in, custom assistant, enterprise connector or third-party app can be governed by that service’s terms.
For highly sensitive material, remove names and identifiers before sending it, avoid uploading unnecessary files, and use the provider’s temporary mode where available. An opt-out reduces one use of the data; it does not make the service an offline or zero-retention tool.

What should I do if the privacy switch is missing or ineffective?
- Confirm the account: sign out and back in to the account that owns the chats. A personal account and a work or school account can expose different controls.
- Check the platform: look on the web and in the latest mobile app. Providers sometimes place privacy controls in different menus.
- Check administrator restrictions: organizational administrators can hide or replace consumer settings.
- Update the app and reload: stale app versions and cached sessions can show an old menu.
- Look for a second control: voice, images, live video, memory, advertising and feedback may each have independent switches.
- Delete separately: if old chats are the concern, use the history or activity deletion tool after changing the training setting.
- Record the change: note the date and take a confirmation screenshot so you can detect an account reset or policy change later.
If a provider changes the wording, match the function rather than the exact label: look for phrases such as improve the model, activity, conversation training, voice training, data sharing or third-party collaborators.
How can I audit all of my chatbot accounts?
- List every account and sign-in method, including personal, work, school and API accounts.
- For each service, turn off the provider-specific training control before sending new sensitive prompts.
- Delete existing chats or activity that you no longer need.
- Clear memory and disable personalization if you do not want profile facts reused.
- Review voice, image, live-video and file-upload improvement settings independently.
- Disconnect extensions, custom bots and third-party connectors that receive conversation content.
- Read the retention notice for your region and plan, especially when an administrator manages the account.
- Repeat the audit after an app redesign, account migration or policy update.
The practical rule is simple: opt out first for future activity, then handle deletion, memory, advertising and connected services as separate privacy jobs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does private or incognito browser mode stop a chatbot from training on my prompts?
No. Private browsing mainly prevents local history and cookies from being retained on that device; it does not change the provider’s server-side training or retention policy. Use the account-level privacy control or a temporary-chat feature instead.
Will the setting follow me if I sign in with another account?
Usually not. These controls are attached to the account, workspace or organization that owns the session, so a second personal account, school account or employer-managed workspace may have different defaults and menus.
Can a plug-in or custom chatbot use my conversation after I opt out?
It may, under its own terms. A provider’s training switch generally governs that provider’s systems, while a connected extension, custom bot or external API can copy prompts and files to another service with separate retention and model-improvement rules.
What is the safest way to share a sensitive document with an AI assistant?
Remove names, account numbers and unnecessary metadata before upload, share only the relevant excerpt, and use a temporary or enterprise-controlled environment when available. Confirm the recipient service’s retention and administrator-access rules before sending the original file.
