To fix a VPN connection error in Windows 11, first disconnect the VPN and confirm that ordinary internet access works. Then record the exact error code, check the VPN profile under Settings > Network & internet > VPN, and use the code to decide whether to check credentials, the adapter, security settings, or the route to the VPN server. Avoid resetting all network settings until targeted checks have failed: a reset removes installed network adapters and may require VPN software or virtual switches to be set up again.
Why won’t my VPN connect on Windows 11?
A failed VPN connection can come from several different places: the computer may have no working internet connection, the Windows VPN profile may be wrong, authentication may be rejected, a local adapter may be misconfigured, or a firewall, router, or VPN server may be preventing the connection. Start by separating those possibilities rather than changing multiple settings at once.

Disconnect the VPN and open several ordinary websites. If they do not load, troubleshoot Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a captive portal, or the router before changing the VPN profile. If ordinary internet works, the VPN failure is more likely specific to its profile, sign-in, protocol, adapter, or path to the server. A VPN that reports “Connected” but leaves you without internet access is a different symptom: the connection has been made, but traffic is not working as expected through the VPN.
Before making changes, write down the full error number and text. Error codes often identify the fault domain, and that evidence is more useful to an administrator or provider than a general report that the VPN will not connect.

What should I check before changing the VPN settings?
Use a short, controlled sequence. Each check narrows the fault without disrupting unrelated network settings.
- Test the base connection. Disconnect the VPN and load several ordinary websites. If internet access fails without the VPN, resolve the Wi-Fi, Ethernet, captive-portal, or router problem first.
- Check whether another network changes the result. If available, try a different network. A USB Ethernet adapter can also provide a separate wired path for checking whether the Wi-Fi connection or adapter is involved; it is a diagnostic aid, not a fix for a problem at the VPN server.
- Record the failure. Note the exact Windows error number and message, when it occurred, and whether ordinary internet access worked. Avoid repeatedly changing credentials, VPN type, and security options without knowing which one is relevant.
- Inspect the profile. Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN and compare the saved profile with the information from the VPN administrator or provider.
- Use the code to choose a targeted repair. Check the matching error section below before reinstalling adapters or resetting networking.
How do I check a Windows 11 VPN profile?
Windows’ supported profile location is Settings > Network & internet > VPN. Confirm the details against the configuration issued for this specific connection; do not guess at the VPN type or authentication method.

- Server name or address: Check spelling and punctuation against the supplied configuration.
- VPN type: Confirm that the profile uses the type required by the server.
- Sign-in method: Check whether the connection expects a username and password, a certificate, or another configured method.
- Credentials and account status: Re-enter the correct account details where appropriate, and ask the administrator to confirm that the account is active if access is denied.
- One-time password: If the service requires one, confirm that you are entering the current code at the expected sign-in step.
Windows also lets you start a connection from the taskbar’s network controls. After connecting, check that the VPN profile shows Connected. That status confirms the profile’s reported connection state; if applications still cannot reach the internet, troubleshoot the no-internet symptom separately.
What do Windows VPN error codes 691, 720, 800, 809, and 812 mean?
Microsoft’s Windows VPN guidance associates these codes with different failure areas. Treat each as a clue, not proof that every device or server with that code has the same underlying cause.

How do I fix VPN error 691?
Error 691 points first to rejected credentials: Microsoft defines it as access denied because the username and/or password is invalid on the domain. Re-enter the account details associated with this VPN and check for a typing error. If the same error persists, ask the administrator to verify the account’s status and the credentials expected by the VPN; repeatedly changing unrelated network settings will not resolve a server-side rejection.

Error 720 means no PPP control protocols are configured. Microsoft’s Windows Server troubleshooting guidance links common 720 failures to an incorrectly bound WAN Miniport (IP) adapter, so inspect the relevant adapter in Device Manager before resetting the whole network stack.
Open Device Manager and inspect Network adapters, including the WAN Miniport entries. If the symptoms and code point to a local binding or driver issue, update or reinstall the affected adapter. Avoid removing unrelated adapters; if you are unsure which entry is involved, collect the error and adapter details for an administrator rather than experimenting across the list.
How do I fix VPN error 800?
Error 800 indicates that the VPN server may be unreachable or that security parameters may be incorrectly configured for the connection. Check the server name or address, VPN type, and security settings against the configuration provided by the VPN administrator or provider.
If those details match, the next step is to ask the administrator or provider to check server availability and the connection configuration. Error 800 does not, by itself, establish whether the fault is on the PC or at the server, so changing unrelated Windows network settings can make diagnosis harder.

How do I fix VPN error 809?
Error 809 means the remote VPN server is not responding. Microsoft identifies intervening firewalls, NAT, and routers as possible causes. For an IPsec connection, the path may need to allow UDP ports 500 and 4500.
These checks commonly require access to the network equipment or VPN server, which a home user may not have. Ask the provider or network administrator to verify the route, firewall, NAT, and router behavior. Do not treat opening ports as a universal Windows fix: the relevant protocol and network path must be confirmed first.
How do I fix VPN error 812?
Error 812 points to a mismatch between the authentication method in the Windows client profile and the method configured on the RAS/VPN server. Contact the VPN administrator to confirm the required client method and server configuration. Repeatedly switching authentication options without that information can introduce new mismatches rather than correct the original one.
What if Windows says the VPN is connected but I have no internet?
First confirm that ordinary internet works when the VPN is disconnected. If it does, note which sites or applications fail while the VPN is connected and whether the profile continues to show Connected. That distinction helps the administrator determine whether the issue is with the VPN route, server-side access, or the client profile, rather than with the underlying Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.

Check the profile’s server and VPN type against the supplied configuration, and report the no-internet symptom separately from a connection failure. A connected status is useful evidence, but it does not establish that the applications you need can reach their destinations through the VPN. If the VPN is managed by an employer or organization, ask its administrator to check the intended traffic handling and access rules rather than changing settings that may be organization-controlled.

When should I repair a network adapter or VPN client?
Adapter repair is appropriate when the error and symptoms point to a local adapter, binding, or driver problem—not as a routine response to every failed connection. For error 720, inspect the WAN Miniport entries in Device Manager as described above. For other codes, first follow the relevant credential, profile, server, or network-path checks.
If a third-party VPN client installed a virtual adapter, use that client’s vendor instructions to repair or reinstall it. A virtual adapter belongs to the VPN client, so removing or changing it through a generic troubleshooting step may leave the client misconfigured. If you do not know which adapter belongs to the VPN, record its name and ask the provider or administrator before uninstalling it.

Network reset is a last local-stack step, not the first fix for an error code. Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset > Reset now. Microsoft states that the process removes installed network adapters and reinstalls them after restart, returning networking settings to defaults.

Use Network reset only after those targeted checks have failed and you are prepared to restore affected networking software and settings.

What information should I send to VPN support?
A useful support request makes it possible to distinguish a credential problem from a client adapter, certificate, protocol, firewall/NAT, or server-availability issue. Include the facts below rather than only saying that the VPN does not work.
- The exact Windows error number and full text.
- The VPN type and server address shown in the profile.
- The date and time the failure occurred.
- Whether ordinary internet access works with the VPN disconnected.
- Whether the same VPN behaves differently on another network.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries or VPN-client logs, if available.
- Any recent change to the device, account, network, or VPN configuration that may help support narrow the timeline.
Do not send passwords or one-time codes in an ordinary support message. If logs contain account or organization details, use the support channel approved by the VPN administrator or provider.
What should I compare if I need a different personal VPN provider?
If troubleshooting indicates that a personal VPN provider is the source of the problem, compare technical support for Windows 11 rather than assuming a replacement will fix every failure. A different provider may be relevant to a provider-side reliability issue, but it will not repair an incorrectly configured enterprise VPN profile or an account managed by an organization.

Should I disable Windows Firewall to see whether it is blocking my VPN?
Do not turn off a firewall broadly as a first diagnostic step. Error 809 may involve an intervening firewall or router, but the administrator who controls that network should verify the relevant path and protocol instead.
Can I use a work VPN profile after changing my password?
That depends on how the organization provisions and authenticates the VPN account. If the VPN begins returning an access-denied error after an account change, ask the administrator to confirm which credentials and account state the VPN server expects.
