To fix missing, duplicated, or out-of-order gold ticks, treat the provider’s sequence number or offset as a continuity contract: validate each update before applying it, stop changing the affected local state when continuity breaks, and recover through documented replay, backfill, or a fresh snapshot. Resume live updates only after the recovered state and the live stream meet at a verified cursor. Gold streams also require separate handling for market-closed stale prices and heartbeats, which do not necessarily indicate a missing tick.

Why do gold market-data ticks appear to be missing or out of order?

A live feed is a sequence of messages delivered over a connection; it is not automatically a complete, correctly ordered history in your application. A disconnect, reconnect, processing delay, duplicate delivery, or a provider-defined range of updates can make what your program observes differ from the sequence it expects. If your code applies a later update before identifying a gap, its local view may no longer represent the provider’s current state.

The practical signal is the feed’s documented cursor: a sequence number, offset, or equivalent value that lets the consumer establish which update came before another. Do not infer continuity from arrival time alone. A message timestamp can help with diagnosis, but the protocol’s cursor rules—not a guessed timestamp interval—must determine whether the next update is valid.

Feed scope matters. Bitvavo’s WebSocket Market Data Pro documentation says its nonce values are not shared with REST or standard WebSocket APIs. Vike documents sequence behavior scoped to a feed. Treat a cursor as meaningful only within the stream, symbol, and connection or session context defined by its provider; do not compare unrelated counters or carry one into a different feed without documentation that permits it.

How can I tell whether an update is a real sequence gap?

Start with the provider’s cursor format and continuity rule. For a single-number cursor, a common check is that the next number equals the previous number plus one, but only use that rule if the provider documents it. For a range cursor, validate the start of the new range against the end of the last accepted range.

Validate ranges as ranges

Bitvavo’s Market Data Pro provides a concrete example: one message can cover sequence numbers 101–102, and the next should begin at 103. Comparing only one endpoint, or assuming every message represents exactly one update, can produce false alarms or conceal a discontinuity. Apply the provider’s exact range semantics, including any documented behavior for snapshots and resets.

Classify what you observed

  • Gap: the cursor jumps forward beyond the next permitted value or range.
  • Duplicate: a frame repeats a cursor or range that was already accepted. Do not apply it twice unless the provider explicitly defines duplicate handling otherwise.
  • Backward cursor: an update arrives with a cursor older than the accepted position. It may be delayed, duplicated, or associated with a different session; do not silently rewind live state.
  • Malformed or mismatched frame: a missing or invalid cursor, or a symbol that does not match the subscribed state, is not safe to apply.

These checks should happen before a frame mutates a local order book or tick-derived state. Record the last accepted cursor and the first observed cursor that fails validation. That makes the discontinuity auditable and gives a recovery request a precise starting point.

What should the application do immediately after detecting a gap?

Quarantine the affected state: stop applying updates to that symbol or feed until it has been rebuilt or reconciled. Continuing to apply later deltas can make recovery harder because the local state then combines an unknown hole with newer changes.

  1. Mark the stream state as unsafe. Move it out of the live/apply state and prevent downstream consumers from treating its book or derived price state as current.
  2. Record the discontinuity. Capture the provider, symbol, feed scope, connection ID or session, last accepted cursor, first observed cursor after the break, and the time the application detected it.
  3. Preserve evidence where permitted. Keep raw frames and recovery responses if your data-handling policy allows it. They can help distinguish transport behavior from an application bug and support replay or incident review.
  4. Choose the strongest recovery method the provider actually supports. Prefer cursor-based replay when documented; use a matching historical endpoint for backfill when available; otherwise rebuild from a fresh snapshot and resume from its documented handoff point.
  5. Verify before returning to live processing. Apply recovered data in order and establish continuity through the point where the live stream resumes. If the cursors do not reconcile, keep the state quarantined and retry or fail closed.

Failing closed may temporarily mean the application cannot publish a trusted value for that feed. That is safer than presenting a seemingly live value whose update history is known to be incomplete.

Which recovery method should I use?

Use provider replay or offset recovery when the feed exposes it, because it is designed to resume from an acknowledged position. If replay is unavailable, a time-window backfill may help; if neither can restore the missing interval, rebuild from a snapshot and be explicit that intermediate events were not recovered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Recovery method When it fits Strength Limitation
Provider replay or offset recovery The API documents a replay cursor or offset. Can preserve available updates between the accepted position and the live handoff. Retention rules and cursor scope depend on the provider.
REST time-window backfill A historical endpoint covers the same series and missed time interval. Provides a requestable, auditable interval for reconstruction. Time-based reconstruction may not preserve every individual tick.
Fresh snapshot plus live deltas Replay is unavailable or the gap is too old to replay. Restores a known baseline from which to resume. Events between the old state and the snapshot may be unrecoverable.
FIX session recovery Your integration uses a provider’s enterprise FIX session. Uses explicit session recovery semantics, including gap-fill behavior. Market-data messages may be treated as perishable rather than replayed individually.

Documented provider examples

Indodax documents offset recovery: resubscribe with recover=true and the last offset, then consume the returned publications and updated offset. Use the provider’s response as the new recovery sequence; do not assume that reconnecting alone restores the missed publications.

Vike documents a REST backfill approach for sequence gaps using the same series and the missed time window. The key operational point is to request the interval that bridges the last accepted event and the first event you can safely rejoin—not an arbitrary broad range that may mix unrelated data.

SiftingIO’s FIX documentation describes persistent sequence numbers, ResendRequest recovery, and SequenceReset-GapFill for perishable market-data messages; it also describes a fresh snapshot on reconnect. A gap-fill is a session-level recovery action, not proof that every old market-data tick was replayed. Rebuild the market-data state from the snapshot when the session’s documented behavior requires it.

How do I resume without corrupting local state?

Recover into a separate working state rather than patching the production state while it is already known to be incomplete. Once replayed or backfilled updates have been applied in order, compare the recovery endpoint with the live stream’s handoff cursor. Swap the rebuilt state into use atomically only after continuity is established.

  1. Bootstrap. Open the stream, authenticate, subscribe, and obtain the provider’s initial snapshot or first valid cursor. Store that cursor with the symbol and feed identity, along with a connection or session epoch.
  2. Validate each frame. Check symbol identity and cursor continuity before applying any update. Use only the continuity rule documented for that provider and feed.
  3. Quarantine on any violation. On a jump, duplicate, backward cursor, malformed frame, or symbol mismatch, stop mutating the affected state and record the evidence.
  4. Recover from a known point. Request replay or offset recovery from the last accepted cursor, backfill the exact missing interval, or obtain a fresh snapshot if the provider offers no usable replay path.
  5. Reconcile the handoff. Apply recovered events in order and verify that the rebuilt state reaches the cursor at which live processing can safely continue.
  6. Resume atomically. Replace the quarantined state with the verified state, then continue validating every live frame.

A provider-neutral outline is:

state = SNAPSHOT_REQUIRED
last_cursor = null

on_snapshot(snapshot, cursor):
    local_state = snapshot
    last_cursor = cursor
    state = LIVE

on_update(frame):
    if state != LIVE:
        buffer_or_drop(frame)
        return
    if not contiguous(last_cursor, frame.cursor):
        state = GAP
        record_gap(last_cursor, frame.cursor, frame.symbol, frame.connection_id)
        request_replay_or_backfill(last_cursor, frame.cursor)
        return
    apply(frame)
    last_cursor = frame.cursor

on_recovery(replayed_frames, terminal_cursor):
    rebuild_from_snapshot_or_checkpoint(replayed_frames)
    assert contiguous_through(terminal_cursor)
    last_cursor = terminal_cursor
    state = LIVE

This is an implementation sketch, not a provider’s literal API. The definitions of contiguous, recovery handoff, and snapshot coverage must come from the relevant protocol. If the terminal cursor cannot be verified, do not silently skip the gap; repeat recovery or keep the feed unavailable to consumers that require trustworthy continuity.

What is different about gold streams when the market is closed?

A gold stream is not necessarily a 24/7 feed. goldprice.dev documents an XAU-USD-SPOT stream with available, unavailable, and closed state messages. When closed, it can return a last price marked is_stale, include a next_open field, and send heartbeats until reopening.

Represent connection health and price freshness separately. A heartbeat indicates that the connection is alive; it is not itself a price update and does not establish that a new market price exists. A closed-market stale value should not be presented as a fresh live tick. When the feed reopens, resume price updates according to the provider’s state and cursor rules rather than treating heartbeats as missing price messages.

Also distinguish a provider-reported unavailable state from an ordinary quiet period. The documented state message is more meaningful than assuming that silence always means a transport failure. Your application can still monitor heartbeat timing for connection health, but the threshold for declaring a timeout is an implementation choice; the cited provider material does not establish a universal timeout value.

What should I log to make a gap diagnosable?

Capture enough context to reconstruct what the consumer believed and what it received. A cursor without its feed identity or connection context may be impossible to interpret later.

  • Provider, symbol, feed scope, transport, connection ID, and connection epoch.
  • Last accepted cursor and first observed cursor after the discontinuity.
  • Estimated missing sequence units when the protocol permits that calculation.
  • Recovery method, request ID, returned cursor or offset, and snapshot timestamp.
  • Final reconciled cursor and whether the state was atomically restored.
  • Counters for gaps, duplicates, out-of-order frames, stale-state transitions, heartbeat timeouts, reconnects, and unrecoverable gaps.

These are operational recommendations based on the cursor, state, heartbeat, and recovery contracts described by the providers, not a provider-mandated logging format. Avoid recording credentials or other secrets in raw-frame logs.

Does a faster feed prevent sequence gaps?

No. Lower reported delivery delay and higher message throughput do not replace sequence validation or recovery. Bitvavo reports approximately 52.5 ms average delay for Market Data Pro versus approximately 100 ms for its standard WebSocket, and about 9.1 messages per 100 ms versus 1 message per 100 ms. Those are figures reported by Bitvavo in its 2026-crawled documentation, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for a particular client, network, or gold feed.

Bitvavo describes Market Data Pro as non-conflated Level 2 market data with sequence numbering intended to let consumers track book changes. That makes the feed’s sequencing useful for detecting continuity problems; it does not establish that all providers expose the same cursor model, nor does it prove that a client will never disconnect or mishandle frames. An independent gold tick-gap frequency, packet-loss rate, or recovery success rate is not established by the cited provider material.

How do I choose a safe operating policy?

Set policy around the consequence of a bad local state. A display that can label a value stale may tolerate a temporary interruption differently from an automated system that depends on a continuously reconciled book. In either case, make the state visible to downstream users: distinguish live, recovering, stale/closed, and unavailable rather than collapsing them into one “connected” flag.

  • Define which downstream actions are blocked while state is quarantined.
  • Set retry and timeout behavior according to the provider’s documented limits and your service requirements, not an assumed universal market-data interval.
  • Decide whether raw frames can be retained for diagnosis under your privacy and storage policies.
  • Alert on repeated or unrecoverable gaps, not just socket disconnects; a socket can remain open while the application’s state is invalid.

The central correctness boundary is simple: a connected socket is not synonymous with a complete feed, and a successful reconnect is not synonymous with a reconciled state.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a provider replay missed market data?

That depends on the provider’s retention policy and is not established as a shared duration across the documented APIs. Check the specific feed’s replay or backfill documentation and design for snapshot recovery when the missing interval is no longer available.

Should I deduplicate market-data messages by timestamp?

A timestamp is not a substitute for a documented cursor or event identity; multiple legitimate updates can share close or identical times. Prefer the provider’s sequence, offset, or documented deduplication key, and avoid inventing a timestamp rule.

Can I use a REST sequence number to continue a WebSocket stream?

Not unless the provider explicitly documents that the counters share a scope. Bitvavo specifically says its Market Data Pro nonce values are not shared with REST or standard WebSocket APIs.

What does a FIX gap fill mean for market data?

It can advance or reset session sequencing without replaying every perishable market-data message. Check the FIX provider’s recovery behavior and rebuild from a fresh snapshot where its instructions call for one.
