Do not try to prove that a pull request was written by AI. Treat every AI-assisted change as untrusted third-party code: establish its provenance, read the complete diff in context, verify every dependency and license, run the project’s build, lint, tests and security checks, then remove code the contributor cannot explain. Style clues and automated AI detectors can justify closer scrutiny, but they are not reliable merge gates.
How can maintainers detect AI-generated code without relying on a detector?
The dependable method is a risk-based review, not an authorship verdict. Ask the contributor whether an AI system materially generated or refactored the change, then evaluate the patch as you would code from an unknown third party. The goal is to establish accountability and software quality, not to label a person from writing style.

What clues justify a closer look?
- A sudden, unusually large diff that is unrelated to the issue’s narrow scope.
- Verbose comments, repetitive structure or naming that differs sharply from the surrounding project.
- Duplicated helpers, unused branches, impossible fallback logic or error paths that disappear silently.
- Comments that describe behavior the implementation does not actually provide.
- New packages or APIs that seem plausible but are absent from the project’s normal ecosystem.
These are review heuristics only. Human code can have the same characteristics, and generated code can look idiomatic. A disclosure statement is stronger provenance evidence than stylistic inference. Automated scanners are risk detectors with false positives and limited coverage; they cannot prove authorship.
Why is an authorship detector a poor merge gate?
Detectors can misclassify edited human code, miss generated sections and encourage contributors to hide tool use. A merge decision based on a score does not tell you whether a parser handles malformed input, whether a dependency is licensed correctly or whether a fallback leaks secrets. Require evidence that the code works and is understood instead.

How should a project establish provenance and disclosure?
Start before detailed review. Check the pull-request description, commit messages and the repository’s contribution policy. Ask a neutral question such as: “Did an AI tool materially generate or refactor any part of this change? If so, which tool and version, and which files or commits were affected?” Record the answer in the durable location required by the project.
Disclosure patterns used by established projects
| Project or policy pattern | What it requires | What a maintainer should verify |
|---|---|---|
| LLVM AI Tool Use Policy | The contributor must read and review all LLM-generated code or text before requesting review; the contributor remains the author and fully accountable. | Ask the contributor to explain design decisions, edge cases and any generated documentation or tests. |
| Kubeflow guidance | Substantially AI-generated or refactored contributions must be disclosed, and code must be locally built, linted and tested before a pull request is opened. | Look for the disclosure and evidence that the local quality gates were run. |
| OSRF guidance | Name the tools and versions in commit messages and pull-request descriptions; a searchable trailer such as Generated-by: is described as a durable record. |
Preserve the record when commits are rebased or squashed, according to project policy. |
"Contributors must read and review all LLM-generated code or text before they ask other project members to review it."

Disclosure is not a substitute for testing, security analysis, dependency verification, license review or human understanding. A contributor who discloses tool use still has to meet the same technical and legal standards as every other contributor.
How do you review an AI-assisted diff in context?
Read the patch together with the code it calls, the tests that exercise it, configuration, documentation and failure paths. Generated patches often look coherent line by line while violating an invariant elsewhere.

Use a context-first pass
- Restate the intended behavior. Compare the issue, design discussion and acceptance criteria with what the patch actually changes. Flag unrelated formatting, refactors or generated files that increase review surface.
- Trace callers and data flow. Follow inputs from the public interface to storage, network calls and output. Check null, empty, malformed, oversized and unexpected values, not just the happy path.
- Inspect every error path. Look for swallowed exceptions, broad catches, retries without limits, contradictory fallback branches and logs that expose credentials or personal data.
- Compare local conventions. Match naming, error types, lifecycle management, concurrency rules and configuration defaults already used in the repository.
- Read tests as specifications. Confirm that assertions would fail for the bug being fixed and that mocks do not bypass the behavior under review. Add tests for edge cases uncovered during review.
- Ask the contributor to explain it. Request a short explanation of non-obvious algorithms, invariants, trade-offs and why each new abstraction or package is needed.
If the author cannot explain a line, a generated test or a dependency, pause the merge. Ask for a rewrite or remove the unexplained portion rather than approving code on trust.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do you verify every new dependency and its license?
Dependency review is mandatory even when the code itself appears correct. AI systems can invent package names, select a similarly named package with different behavior or add a real package that is abandoned or incompatible with the project’s license.
| Check | Questions to answer | Action when the answer is unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Existence and identity | Does the package exist in the intended registry, and is it the exact library the code imports? | Ask for the canonical package reference and remove the import until identity is confirmed. |
| Maintenance | Is it maintained, compatible with the supported runtime and appropriate for the project’s threat model? | Prefer an established internal or standard-library solution, or document an explicit exception. |
| Necessity | Does the change need a dependency, or could a small local implementation use existing code? | Delete speculative abstractions and unnecessary packages. |
| License | Is the license present, compatible with the project and recorded in the normal notices or bill of materials? | Stop until legal or maintainer review resolves the conflict. |
| Supply-chain risk | Does the package introduce install scripts, transitive dependencies, native code or access to secrets and networks? | Run software-composition analysis and apply the project’s approval process. |
Use dependency and license scanning as an additional control, not as proof that a package is safe. Pin versions when the project’s policy calls for reproducible builds, and remove a package that is not actually used.
Which parts of an AI-generated pull request need elevated review?
Assign an experienced reviewer, a second approval or a specialized security review for changes that can cross a trust boundary. The same requirement should apply to human-written code; AI assistance increases the need for disciplined review but does not create a separate security standard.
| Area | Review focus |
|---|---|
| Authentication and authorization | Identity proof, session lifetime, role checks, privilege boundaries, token storage and failure behavior. |
| Parsing and input validation | Malformed, nested, oversized and ambiguous input; canonicalization; parser differentials; denial-of-service limits. |
| Cryptography | Approved primitives, nonce and key handling, randomness, verification order and migration compatibility. Do not accept invented algorithms or defaults. |
| Deserialization | Type restrictions, gadget exposure, untrusted object boundaries and safe failure behavior. |
| Filesystem and process execution | Path traversal, symlink handling, permissions, race conditions, shell injection and temporary-file cleanup. |
| Network code | TLS and certificate validation, timeouts, redirects, SSRF protections, DNS rebinding and response-size limits. |
| CI and release configuration | Workflow permissions, secrets exposure, unpinned actions, artifact integrity and whether pull requests from forks can execute privileged jobs. |
What build, lint and test gates should run before merge?
Run the project’s normal gates rather than inventing an “AI test.” A passing test suite is necessary evidence of behavior, but it does not establish license compliance, secure defaults or contributor understanding.

- Build the supported targets. Use the documented toolchain and configurations, including release or production-like builds when they differ from development builds. Record warnings and generated artifacts.
- Run formatters and linters. Treat new warnings, static-analysis findings and policy violations as review items instead of suppressing them automatically.
- Run focused tests. Exercise the changed behavior, boundary conditions and regression cases identified during review.
- Run the full regression suite where practical. Generated changes can alter shared utilities, defaults or serialization formats far from the edited file.
- Reproduce the contributor’s claim. If the pull request says a command, benchmark or migration works, run that command in a clean environment and compare the expected result.
Kubeflow’s policy pattern is a useful baseline: AI-generated code is locally built, linted and tested before the pull request is opened. Maintainers can require the same evidence for every contribution without attempting to measure how much of it was machine-generated.
Which security automation should run, and what can it prove?
Apply the repository’s existing security controls to all code, regardless of origin. Use static application security testing or the project’s CodeQL configuration, dependency and license scanning, and secret scanning. Review findings rather than treating a clean dashboard as a guarantee.
GitHub scanning distinctions
GitHub AI Scan can add advisory findings to eligible pull requests; its findings are not currently merge-blocking ruleset enforcement. A separate public-preview AI-applications scanning capability targets risks such as indirect prompt injection, sensitive-information disclosure and excessive agency. Those features address different risk classes and their availability, licensing and coverage can change, so verify the current documentation and repository eligibility before making them policy requirements.
Security automation should also cover generated tests, workflow files, documentation examples that are copied into production and configuration changes. A secret scanner may identify a token, while only a human reviewer notices that a “temporary” debug endpoint is reachable in the release build.
How do you clean up an AI-generated patch before merging?
Cleanup is more than reformatting. The final patch should be smaller, internally consistent and explainable by its maintainer.

- Delete speculative code. Remove unused helpers, future-proofing abstractions, duplicated implementations and comments that do not correspond to behavior.
- Replace hallucinated APIs. Confirm method names, parameters, return values and version compatibility against the actual dependency or project code. Rewrite calls that only appeared plausible.
- Align conventions. Use the repository’s established naming, error types, logging fields, configuration locations and lifecycle patterns.
- Make defaults safe. Require explicit opt-in for insecure modes, constrain resource use, set network timeouts and avoid logging secrets or personal data.
- Pin or remove dependencies. Keep only packages that passed identity, maintenance, license and necessity checks.
- Add regression coverage. For each defect found, add a test that would fail on the old behavior and pass on the corrected behavior.
- Separate unrelated changes. Split generated formatting, documentation or refactors into independent commits, or drop them if they do not serve the issue.
- Re-review the resulting diff. The maintainer should be able to explain the final patch line by line, including generated files and configuration.
Do not preserve a questionable line merely because removing it makes the contribution look less complete. A narrow, understandable patch is safer than a broad one that happens to pass today’s tests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should an open-source project merge, request changes or close the pull request?
Use explicit evidence and policy, not suspicion about the contributor’s tools.
| Decision | Minimum evidence | Typical maintainer action |
|---|---|---|
| Merge | Scope matches the issue; provenance and required disclosure are recorded; code is understood; dependencies and licenses are acceptable; build, lint, tests and security checks pass; elevated review is complete where needed. | Approve and preserve the disclosure and review record according to project policy. |
| Request changes | The idea may be sound, but tests, explanations, dependency checks, security fixes or policy disclosures are incomplete. | List concrete missing evidence and ask for a smaller rewrite or additional review. |
| Close or reject | The contributor cannot explain or test the code, a dependency or license is unacceptable, security risk remains, or the patch is unrelated and cannot be reduced. | Give a specific technical reason and invite a new patch that meets the project’s requirements. |
Never reject solely because a diff “looks like AI.” Reject when the contribution fails a stated quality, security, licensing or accountability requirement. That distinction keeps enforcement fair and makes the policy defensible.

How should maintainers write an AI-use policy?
A useful policy defines responsibilities and evidence rather than banning a tool by name. State whether disclosure is required, where it must be recorded, what counts as substantial generation or refactoring, and which ordinary gates apply.
Policy clauses worth including
- The contributor remains responsible for correctness, security, licensing, intellectual-property compliance and the project’s developer certificate or sign-off requirements.
- Contributors must read and understand generated code before requesting review.
- Substantial generation or refactoring must identify the tool and version in the durable record required by the project.
- Build, lint, focused tests, regression tests and security checks must pass before review is requested.
- Reviewers may require a rewrite, dependency removal or specialist approval for high-risk areas.
- Generated text, tests, workflows and configuration receive the same scrutiny as production code.
- Maintainers should document how disclosures, scanner findings and exceptions are retained for later audits.
Questions to ask when comparing scanning or policy options
| Axis | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Language and framework coverage | A detector or scanner that ignores the project’s main language creates false confidence. |
| Scope | Pull-request-only analysis differs from repository-wide history and branch scanning. |
| Enforcement | Distinguish advisory findings from checks that can actually block a merge. |
| Dependency, secret and license coverage | Authorship signals do not replace supply-chain and credential controls. |
| Fork and Dependabot behavior | Permissions, token exposure and event handling can change what a scanner is allowed to inspect. |
| Data handling and retention | Review where source code and findings are processed, stored and deleted. |
| Cost and licensing | Ensure the control is available to public forks and volunteer maintainers under the project’s terms. |
| False-positive handling and auditability | Reviewers need explanations, suppressions with reasons and a durable record of decisions. |
| Fit with contributor policy | The tool should reinforce disclosure and accountability rules, not silently replace them. |
What can this process establish about AI authorship?
It can establish what the contributor disclosed, what the patch does, which checks it passed and whether a maintainer can explain it. It cannot reliably reconstruct which lines came from a model, identify the exact prompt or prove that a human wrote every unchanged line. Keep the merge decision tied to observable engineering evidence.
Best Value
No credible prevalence or detector-accuracy statistic is established by the authoritative guidance used for this workflow. Do not publish a percentage to make a detector appear more precise than it is. A well-documented review trail is more useful than an unsupported confidence score.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a maintainer reject a pull request because it looks AI-written?
A stylistic suspicion alone is not a sound reason. Request changes or reject when the patch fails a published requirement—for example, the contributor cannot explain its behavior, a dependency has an unacceptable license, or required tests and security checks are missing.
What details should an AI-use disclosure contain?
At minimum, identify the tool and version, state whether it generated or substantially refactored the contribution, and point to the affected commits or files. Put the record where future maintainers can search it, especially when a rebase or squash would otherwise erase a pull-request comment.
Does a passing test suite make AI-generated code safe to merge?
No. Tests primarily provide behavioral evidence for the cases they cover. Dependency identity and licensing, secret exposure, workflow permissions, unsafe defaults and unexplained logic still require separate checks.
How should scanners handle pull requests from forks or automated dependency updates?
Define the event and permission model before enabling enforcement. Confirm that analysis can run without exposing privileged tokens or untrusted code to secrets, and document whether findings are advisory or capable of blocking the update.
