Do not try to detect AI phishing by grammar alone. Generative AI lets criminals produce polished, personalized messages, realistic images, cloned voices and convincing video. The reliable defense is layered: verify who is asking, inspect the real destination and sign-in flow, report suspicious messages, block known indicators, investigate identity activity and use phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA). If a lure may have captured credentials or tokens, start your incident process immediately.

What makes AI-powered phishing different?

AI improves the social-engineering part of phishing, but the attack still needs a delivery channel and a victim action. Criminals can use generative tools to write fluent spear-phishing messages, translate them, personalize them from public information, create realistic profile images or identification documents, clone voices and generate video impersonations. The FBI warns that AI can remove the spelling, grammar and formatting mistakes that once helped people recognize fraud.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security similarly assesses that chatbots and phishing-as-a-service tools lower the barrier to launching attacks. Its practical advice is to judge the sender identity, destination, requested action and sign-in process—not the polish of the wording.

A familiar service is not proof of safety. Attackers can abuse legitimate collaboration, file-sharing or web-hosting services, and they can place a lookalike sign-in page behind a trusted link. In a bounded Canadian Centre sample of more than 100 campaigns targeting Microsoft Entra ID accounts from 2023 through early 2025, 91% were categorized as business-email-compromise (BEC) phishing and 59% used “living-off-trusted-sites” techniques. Those percentages describe that observed sample, not global phishing prevalence.

How can I tell if an AI-written email is phishing?

Assume that excellent writing is neutral evidence. A message is suspicious when its identity, destination, requested action or authentication path cannot be independently verified.

1. Stop when the request changes risk

Pause before acting on an unexpected request for passwords, MFA codes, payment changes, gift cards, payroll updates, confidential files or an urgent sign-in. AI can make urgency sound natural, so treat the consequence of the request—not its tone—as the trigger for verification.

2. Verify the person and request out of band

Use a telephone number, service-desk route or work contact method that you already know is genuine. Do not use the phone number, reply address or meeting link in the suspicious message. For family or executive-impersonation scenarios, the FBI advises agreeing on a secret word or phrase that can confirm identity.

3. Inspect the actual destination

Hover over links on a computer or press and hold to preview them on a phone, then read the complete domain and path. A brand name in visible text, a URL shortener or a reputable hosting domain does not establish that the destination is legitimate. Be cautious with redirects, newly opened tabs and pages that ask you to sign in again.

4. Examine the sign-in context

Open the service from a bookmark or a manually typed address instead of the message. Check whether the account, tenant, domain and authentication method are what you normally use. A page that requests a password and then asks for an MFA approval, one-time code or recovery information in an unusual sequence deserves immediate suspicion.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

5. Treat voice, video and documents as unverified

A familiar voice, video call or identification document can be AI-generated. Confirm high-impact instructions through a second channel and require normal business approvals. Do not approve a payment or disclose a secret solely because an audio or video message appears authentic.

What should I do with a suspicious message?

Preserve evidence, report it through the established process and avoid interacting with the content further.

  1. Do not click, open or reply. Do not call a number in the message or download an attachment to “check” it.
  2. Capture the details your security team needs. Keep the original message, headers when available, sender address, recipient, timestamp, links and attachment names. Forward it using your organization’s reporting button or security mailbox rather than altering the original.
  3. Report it promptly. CISA recommends training users to identify and report suspicious activity, marking external email and filtering known malicious indicators at the gateway.
  4. Verify any consequential request separately. Tell the purported sender or manager that you are confirming through a known contact route.
  5. Warn affected colleagues through a trusted channel. Do not forward the lure broadly if doing so could cause more clicks; ask security staff to distribute an advisory.

If you entered a password, approved an unexpected MFA prompt or supplied a code, report that fact immediately. Do not wait to see whether anything happens.

Can AI phishing bypass MFA?

Yes. Ordinary MFA can be defeated when an adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) page relays your login to the real service and captures credentials, MFA secrets or session tokens. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recommends phishing-resistant MFA by default because it is designed to bind authentication to the legitimate site rather than merely accepting a code or approval that an attacker can relay.

What phishing-resistant MFA means

FIDO2 security keys and platform passkeys are possible implementations, but support depends on the account, operating system and service. Check the service’s authentication documentation before buying hardware or changing policy. A security key is not automatically compatible with every account.

What to do after a suspected AiTM login

  1. Use a trusted device and the organization’s incident process.
  2. Reset the affected password and any other account that reused it.
  3. Revoke active sessions, refresh tokens and remembered sign-ins where the service allows it.
  4. Remove unfamiliar MFA methods, app passwords, forwarding rules and recovery addresses.
  5. Review sign-in logs, mailbox access, OAuth grants, file downloads and administrative changes.
  6. Escalate to the identity or security team so they can search for the same indicators across other users.

Do not assume that changing a password alone invalidates a stolen session token; session and token revocation may be required.

How do organizations block AI phishing emails?

Use controls at several points because AI mainly improves content quality. The message still has to arrive, direct the user somewhere and produce an identity or financial action.

Control layer What to configure What it can and cannot do
Awareness and reporting Train users on urgency, unusual requests, external-mail indicators and the reporting route; rehearse executive and vendor impersonation. Improves detection and response. It cannot authenticate every message or prevent a click by itself.
Email gateway Filter known malicious indicators, enforce authentication checks, flag external senders and quarantine suspicious messages. Stops known infrastructure and patterns. Trusted services, compromised accounts and new domains can evade static rules.
URL protection Scan links at delivery and again at click time; follow redirects and reassess changing destinations. Reduces exposure to evolving URLs. No scanner guarantees that every newly created or private page is classified correctly.
Attachment protection Detonate or inspect attachments in a sandbox and block dangerous file types or active content according to risk. Helps with malware-bearing files. A harmless-looking document can still contain social engineering.
Identity security Require phishing-resistant MFA where supported, apply conditional access and monitor unusual sign-ins, token use and consent grants. Limits account takeover and exposes post-click activity. Coverage varies by service and configuration.
Investigation and response Correlate email, URL, endpoint and identity events; preserve reports and define escalation and token-revocation playbooks. Finds the full attack chain. It requires staffing, tuning and timely review.

Microsoft documents anti-phishing policies for spoofing and impersonation, URL scanning and time-of-click verification, attachment detonation and correlation of email and identity signals. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent comparative test results; availability and configuration vary by edition and tenant.

How should security teams investigate a reported lure?

Start with the message, then follow every related identity and endpoint event. A polished message may be only the first step in a longer compromise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Validate the report. Confirm the original sender, authentication results, recipients, timestamps, message identifiers, URLs and attachment hashes.
  2. Scope delivery. Search for matching subjects, sender infrastructure, URLs, domains, attachments and replies across mailboxes and collaboration systems.
  3. Trace user actions. Identify clicks, downloads, form submissions, sign-ins, MFA events, consent grants and mailbox-rule changes.
  4. Check identity telemetry. Look for unfamiliar devices, impossible travel, new locations, token use, unusual user-agent strings and access to sensitive resources.
  5. Contain. Remove messages, block confirmed indicators, disable or reset affected accounts, revoke sessions and isolate compromised endpoints.
  6. Recover and learn. Confirm that persistence mechanisms are gone, notify affected people, preserve evidence and tune controls without blocking legitimate business mail.

Automated triage can reduce the queue. Microsoft describes its Phishing Triage Agent as using large language model analysis to classify user reports as threats or false positives, explain the classification and support analyst workflows. Treat that as a vendor claim: retain analyst review, test it against your own mail and document its error and escalation rates rather than assuming universal accuracy.

Which controls should I prioritize first?

Prioritize controls according to the paths your users and attackers actually use, then measure whether they reduce time to report and contain.

For a small organization

  • Turn on external-sender indicators and gateway filtering for known malicious indicators.
  • Give every user one clearly labeled reporting method and train on payment, password and MFA-request scenarios.
  • Require independent verification for bank-detail changes, payroll changes and urgent secret requests.
  • Enable phishing-resistant MFA for administrative and high-value accounts first.
  • Write a short playbook covering password reset, session revocation, mailbox-rule review and customer notification.

For a larger security program

  • Correlate email, collaboration, endpoint and identity telemetry in one investigation workflow.
  • Recheck URLs at click time and account for redirects and destinations that change after delivery.
  • Use conditional-access policies that restrict risky sign-ins and legacy authentication.
  • Measure report volume, time to triage, false-positive rate, time to revoke sessions and repeat targeting of the same users.
  • Review automated triage decisions with analysts and sample both “threat” and “false positive” outcomes.

How to compare security solutions

Ask vendors and internal teams the same questions:

  • Does coverage include email, collaboration applications, URLs, attachments and identity events?
  • Does protection operate at delivery and click time, including redirects and changing destinations?
  • Which MFA methods resist credential relay, and which of your services support them?
  • What investigation context is retained for a user report, and where is human approval required?
  • How much configuration and tuning is needed to preserve legitimate mail?

Official product documentation can establish that a feature exists, but it is not a neutral performance comparison. Avoid selecting a tool because it claims to “stop AI phishing” without independent evidence, a clear operating model and a recovery plan.

What common detection mistakes make AI phishing worse?

Relying on bad grammar

AI can produce clean prose and accurate translations. Use language anomalies as one clue, never as an allow rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trusting a familiar logo or platform

Attackers can host content on reputable services or compromise a legitimate account. Validate the destination, account context and requested action.

Approving MFA to clear an alert

An unexpected approval may be the attacker completing a relayed login. Deny it, report it and investigate the account.

Blocking only domains

Trusted-site abuse and rapidly changing destinations make domain lists incomplete. Combine URL analysis with identity and behavior signals.

Automating without oversight

False positives can interrupt business, while false negatives can expose accounts. Keep analysts in the loop and track performance on your own traffic.

What should a personal user do after clicking?

Speed matters more than proving whether the page was malicious. Disconnect from an unsafe session, contact your employer or service provider through a known route and explain exactly what you entered or approved.

  • Change the exposed password from a trusted device and change reused passwords elsewhere.
  • Revoke sessions and tokens, remove unknown MFA methods and check recovery settings.
  • Tell your bank or payment provider immediately if financial information or payment instructions were involved.
  • Run the organization’s endpoint-security checks if a file was downloaded or executed.
  • Preserve the message and browser details for investigators instead of deleting the only evidence.

If you only opened a page and entered nothing, still report it. The report can help protect colleagues even when your account was not used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI detector reliably tell whether an email is phishing?

No. A detector may identify suspicious language or patterns, but a legitimate message can be machine-written and a malicious message can look completely human. Use automated scoring to prioritize review, then verify identity, destination and requested action.

Are QR-code phishing messages different from email phishing?

They shift the inspection problem to a phone, where the destination may be harder to preview. Scan only codes from expected sources, inspect the full URL before signing in and open the service from its official app or bookmark when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I delete a phishing email after reporting it?

Follow your organization’s retention instructions. Security teams may need the original headers, URLs and attachment metadata, so deleting or forwarding it in a way that strips those details can hinder investigation.

How often should phishing-resistant MFA be tested?

Test enrollment, recovery and sign-in for each important service after deployment and whenever a service or identity provider changes. Include lost-key and offline-recovery procedures so users do not fall back to weaker methods during an emergency.
