To destroy the yellow or golden-cracked blocks in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, first unlock Rose’s Smash ability by defeating The Builder (Talos) in the Clock Tower. Then jump directly above the marked block or floor and press Down + Jump while Rose is airborne. PlayStation uses Down + Cross; the PC control is S + Space. A short hop may not break a thick floor, so use a higher starting point for a stronger impact.
What ability breaks the golden-cracked blocks?
Smash is the required movement ability. Golden cracks identify objects that can be destroyed by Rose’s downward impact; ordinary attacks and the Arcane Whip do not replace Smash.

The in-game tutorial wording reproduced by AllThingsHow explains that pressing Down + Jump in mid-air sends Rose crashing to the ground. The impact breaks destructible objects recognizable by golden cracks and can also damage enemies. This is different from weapon-breakable cracked walls described in some guides, so a cracked appearance alone does not tell you which attack to use.

- Locate the yellow block covering the floor.
- Reposition the movable platforms above the obstruction so the giant fist has a clear route.
- Allow the giant fist to destroy that obstruction.
- Drop through the opening, ride the elevator and enter the Builder’s throne area.
- Defeat The Builder/Talos. The victory reward is Smash.
The giant fist used during this route is part of the puzzle progression. It should not be confused with the ability you receive after the boss fight.
How do I perform Smash on PlayStation or PC?
Stand over the target, jump, and activate the downward move before Rose lands. The input must be made while she is airborne.

Rose dives vertically, damaging enemies beneath her and breaking objects marked with the golden-crack pattern. Aim for the center of the block or floor rather than jumping beside it.
Why does Down + Jump not break the cracked floor?
The most common reason is insufficient fall distance. Smash has several impact strengths, and thicker destructible floors require a more powerful landing than a low hop provides.

Use a higher launch point
Climb to a platform, ledge or upper section, then jump or drop so Rose travels farther before the impact. The Heavy Stomp tutorial states that its power level depends on the distance traveled during the fall and that a high enough jump can break thicker objects.
Check the marking and timing
- Confirm that the surface has the golden-crack marking associated with Smash.
- Press Down plus Jump after Rose leaves the ground, not before the jump begins.
- Try again from a greater height if the surface remains intact.
- Do not assume a normal cracked wall uses the same mechanic; some walls are intended for weapon attacks instead.
Is Smash the same as Fist of Talos?
No. Smash is Rose’s airborne, downward movement used to break golden-cracked obstacles. Fist of Talos is a separate spell that summons a giant fist and is primarily a combat effect. The fist puzzle in the Clock Tower and Rose’s Smash input therefore represent different systems.

Return to earlier areas and inspect floors and barriers with the same golden cracks. Guides identify optional rooms and rewards behind these obstacles, including relic and weapon chests, Brave Heart and Wise Heart fragments, stat-enhancement books, shortcuts and routes such as Brauner’s atelier.
Earlier locations specifically cited for golden-cracked floors include the Paris Streets and the cemetery. AllThingsHow’s 2026 accounting of 257 secret areas identifies six Smash floors: five thick floors and one golden-crack floor. That count is a guide’s classification, not an official in-game total, and room labels can differ by map.

What should I check when a Smash target still will not break?
- Ability status: Make sure The Builder/Talos has been defeated and Smash has been awarded.
- Target type: Look for the golden-crack pattern rather than a generic cracked wall.
- Airborne input: The command is Down + Jump during the jump, not a grounded Down input.
- Fall height: Increase the distance Rose travels before impact for thick floors.
- Position: Start directly above the marked section so the vertical dive lands on it.
Does Smash damage enemies as well as objects?
Yes. The tutorial describes the impact as both a destructive-object attack and a way to damage enemies beneath Rose. Its primary exploration purpose is opening the golden-cracked blocks and floors, but enemies positioned under the landing point can also be hit.
