You cannot make a take-home assignment permanently “AI-proof.” You can, however, make it much harder for a generic chatbot to substitute for the learning you intend to assess. Start with the skill, set an explicit AI boundary, anchor the work in course-specific or firsthand material, collect a few meaningful stages of the student’s process, and add a fair opportunity to defend or transfer the reasoning. That approach produces better evidence of learning than a polished final answer or an AI-detector score alone.
The goal is not surveillance or a contest with software. It is valid, accessible evidence that the student can perform the target skill when AI is available.

Can you make homework assignments completely AI-proof?
No. A student can give an AI system the assigned readings, field notes, class discussion, personal details or a dataset and ask it to produce a plausible response. The University of Chicago’s teaching guidance puts the limit plainly: “Given the ubiquity and allure of AI tools across technological platforms, it is difficult to craft a completely “AI-proof” assessment.” See its AI-aware assignment guidance.
Design instead for AI resilience: the assignment should make the student do the reasoning, observation, source evaluation, communication or practice that the course promises. Local or personal material raises the value of firsthand engagement, but it is not an authentication system. A chatbot can still imitate a reflection if the prompt asks only for a generic reflection.

Harvard’s Bok Center recommends combining several measures: put essential skills into an in-class setting when appropriate, use short post-submission checks, stage the work, ground prompts in class or firsthand material, and provide supported opportunities for AI-free practice. Its assignment-resilience guidance also recommends asking students to defend, extend, reflect on or transfer their choices.
Use those measures proportionately. Extra forms, logs and oral exams are not automatically better; they must serve the learning outcome and remain accessible.

What learning outcome should the homework measure?
Write the outcome before adding any anti-AI feature. An assignment is stronger when every required step gives you evidence of the skill you actually grade.
Separate the shortcut from the skill
List what a generic chatbot can produce quickly, then identify what the student must practice independently. A conventional “write a 1,000-word essay explaining this chapter” may mostly measure the ability to request, edit and format fluent prose. If the outcome is evaluating evidence, the prompt must require source selection, comparison and justification. If the outcome is observation, the student must make and interpret an observation rather than merely describe a concept.
- Reasoning: require an initial claim, assumptions, evidence and a response to a changed condition.
- Writing: assess choices about audience, structure, evidence and revision, not just grammatical polish.
- Recall: use a brief, accessible check for the specific knowledge students need before applying it.
- Observation or collection: ask for a documented observation, measurement or artifact and an interpretation tied to course concepts.
- Source evaluation: require students to explain why a source is relevant, credible and limited.
State the assignment’s purpose and grading criteria in student-facing language. Avoid adding elaborate paperwork that does not make the target skill more visible.
How should I set the AI boundary for each task?
Tell students exactly what AI may do, what it may not do, what must be disclosed, and what they must verify. “AI allowed” and “AI banned” are too vague for a multi-stage assignment.

Choose a level deliberately
The University of Iowa’s AI Assessment Scale describes five levels, from no AI to open exploration. Iowa also cautions that “No level of the AIAS is considered ideal for all situations.” Select the level that fits the outcome rather than treating one level as universally safest.
| Permission level | What the student may do | What the assignment must still show |
|---|---|---|
| No AI | Complete the specified step without generative AI. | Unaided practice of a central skill, with an accessible way to complete it. |
| AI for support | Use AI for brainstorming, questions or explanations within stated limits. | The student’s source choices, reasoning and final decisions. |
| AI with documentation | Use AI and submit prompts or outputs that are relevant to the task. | Verification, critique and an explanation of revisions. |
| AI for evaluation | Audit an AI-generated argument, solution or code against course materials. | Accurate corrections and justified judgments. |
| Open exploration | Use AI as one tool in an integrated workflow. | Transparent process evidence and demonstrated transfer of the skill. |
For each level, state whether students should disclose the tool, retain prompts or outputs, cite AI assistance, and verify factual claims. Tell them which part is graded as independent work.
How do I give homework a meaningful anchor?
Attach the task to a particular object, discussion, dataset, observation or other material that matters to the course. Yale and Harvard guidance describe authentic work in real-world or novel contexts; Harvard examples include collections, interviews and class-created material.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse course-specific material
Ask students to analyze a passage discussed in class, compare two interpretations raised in seminar, interpret a class-created dataset or apply a method to an assigned object. Provide the material to everyone so success does not depend on private subscriptions, travel or specialized equipment.
Plan an equitable alternative
If a site visit, interview, device or software is a barrier, offer an equivalent object, transcript, dataset or supervised option. A location-based prompt is not fair merely because it is difficult for a chatbot. Explain accommodations and alternatives before students begin.
Do not confuse specificity with security
A prompt about a student’s neighborhood, family or private experience can still be generated from supplied details and may pressure students to disclose sensitive information. Invite, rather than require, personal material and grade the reasoning, not the intimacy of the story.
How can I stage evidence of the student’s process?
Collect a short sequence that shows decisions changing over time, not a pile of documents. Harvard and RIT guidance recommend proposals, drafts, annotated bibliographies, assignment-specific sources and reflection; the value is in the feedback and revision, not the number of uploads.

- Initial approach: submit a question, claim, method or plan and identify what evidence is needed.
- Working evidence: annotate a passage, show calculations, record assumptions, or explain source selection.
- Draft or prototype: produce a partial answer that can receive useful peer or instructor feedback.
- Revision: respond to named feedback and mark a substantive change.
- Decision note: explain one important choice, one rejected alternative and what evidence settled the issue.
- Final submission: present the finished work with the required AI disclosure and citations.
Keep checkpoints small enough to give feedback. A folder of AI-generatable artifacts is not proof by itself; each stage should reveal the target reasoning.
A practical schedule
| Stage | Student submits | Instructor checks |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Question, claim or method plus assumptions | Whether the plan addresses the outcome |
| Evidence | Annotated source, observation or working | Whether evidence is relevant and interpreted |
| Draft | Partial answer or prototype | One actionable point of feedback |
| Revision | Changed passage, calculation, design or code | Whether feedback produced a reasoned change |
| Reflection | Brief explanation of a decision and a rejected alternative | Whether the student can articulate the reasoning |
What follow-up check shows that students understand their own homework?
Use a short opportunity to defend, extend, reflect on or transfer the work. Ask students to apply the same reasoning to a fresh case or explain how a changed assumption would alter the answer. This is more informative than a memorization ambush designed only to catch AI use.
Useful prompts
- “Which assumption matters most, and what would change if it were false?”
- “Why did you reject the strongest alternative interpretation?”
- “Apply your method to this new example; identify the first step that no longer works.”
- “Show one correction you made after checking a source or test, and explain why it was necessary.”
Offer accessible modes
A discussion, brief presentation, written response, recorded explanation or in-class application can serve the same purpose. Do not assume a timed oral or handwritten test is equitable. Berkeley guidance notes that handwriting and time pressure can disadvantage students who use assistive technology, need extra time or process language differently. Publish the format, rubric and accommodations in advance.
What assignment designs make AI substitution less useful?
The following patterns connect a take-home product to observable reasoning. They are adaptable examples, not guarantees that a particular prompt prevents misconduct.
Literature or history
Instead of “summarize the reading,” ask students to compare two interpretations using a passage discussed in class. Require an initial claim, an annotated passage, one revision after feedback and a short explanation of why they rejected another interpretation. Grade the interpretation and evidence, not only the prose.
Science or social science
Provide a course-specific observation or dataset. Students record assumptions and an initial analysis, then explain how their interpretation changes when a new observation or constraint is introduced. The point is transferable reasoning; do not claim that an AI system could not analyze the data if given access.
Math or coding
Require the method, a meaningful test or alternative approach and an independent application to a changed example. If AI-generated code or explanations are allowed, students must identify, test and justify corrections. A working program without an explanation of its tests provides weak evidence of understanding.

AI-integrated critique
Give students an AI-generated argument or solution to audit against assigned sources. Require a documented correction and an explanation of each consequential decision. This assesses evaluation and verification rather than pretending AI is absent.
How should I choose among homework, oral checks and AI-integrated work?
Compare formats on alignment, evidence, workload, access, privacy and the feasibility of a meaningful check-in. No format wins on every dimension.
| Format | Strongest evidence | Main trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Staged authentic project | Reasoning, revision and application to a specific context | Preparation and feedback time; provide equivalent contexts for access |
| Short oral or written follow-up | Ability to explain, extend and transfer a completed approach | Needs accessible alternatives, accommodations and a published rubric |
| AI-integrated critique | Source evaluation, verification and judgment | Does not by itself demonstrate unaided competence in the underlying skill |
| Controlled no-AI step | Independent practice of a narrowly defined skill | Must be accessible and limited to outcomes that genuinely require it |
| Process record | Development of a claim, method or design over time | Privacy and trust concerns if tracking becomes surveillance |
Chicago describes learning logs and document-history tools but warns that process tracking can feel intrusive and affect trust. Prefer a proportionate, learning-centered record. Give feedback on reasoning quality, not artifact volume.
Are AI detectors reliable proof of cheating?
No. A detector score is not proof that a student used AI or that misconduct occurred. Harvard calls AI checkers unreliable evidence, and Arizona’s K–12 guidance rejects using them as the sole basis for a plagiarism finding. Treat a score, if your institution permits seeing one at all, as a prompt for a fair conversation about the work and the published policy.
RIT removed its Turnitin AI-detection feature on May 13, 2024; that was RIT’s institutional decision and does not mean every Turnitin feature disappeared. Follow your own institution’s academic-integrity process, preserve relevant evidence, and allow the student to respond. A mismatch between a final answer and the student’s explanation is a reason to ask an academic question, not a reason to infer guilt automatically.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What does the 87.5% generative-AI figure actually show?
A 2024 survey report commissioned by the Harvard Undergraduate Association says 87.5% of respondents reported ever using generative AI. The authors received 326 undergraduate responses and retained 273 after a reading-comprehension check. The report explicitly says it was student-written, commissioned by the association and not otherwise affiliated with Harvard University. Read the published report for its methods and limits.
That figure is not a Harvard University institutional survey, not a prevalence estimate for all students and not a 2026 usage rate. It does illustrate why assignment design should assume that AI is available rather than treating access as exceptional.

How do I implement a redesign without overwhelming students or staff?
Start with one assignment and make the purpose visible. A compact redesign can be more effective than adding several new forms.
- Write the learning outcome and the evidence that would demonstrate it.
- Mark the shortcut a generic chatbot could supply and the reasoning the student must practice.
- Choose an AI permission level for each task and publish disclosure and verification rules.
- Select a shared course object, observation or dataset, with an equivalent accessible alternative.
- Add two or three checkpoints that lead to feedback and a meaningful revision.
- Plan a short defense, extension, reflection or transfer prompt in an accessible format.
- Publish the rubric, privacy expectations, accommodations and academic-integrity process.
- After the cycle, remove any artifact that did not improve evidence of the outcome.
A student-facing checklist
- I know the skill this assignment is intended to develop.
- I know where AI is prohibited, permitted or required.
- I know what use to disclose and how to verify claims.
- I have access to the required materials or an equivalent alternative.
- I know which drafts, annotations or explanations I must submit.
- I know how the follow-up check works and how to request an accommodation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can students still use AI on an assignment with personal or local details?
Yes. If students provide the model with their notes, observations or background, it can still draft a plausible response. Treat local material as a reason to engage with the course, not as proof of authorship, and assess the student’s interpretation and decisions.
Should I require students to submit every AI prompt and chat transcript?
Only when that record serves a stated learning purpose. A short disclosure, selected excerpts and a verification note may be enough; collecting complete transcripts can create privacy, workload and trust problems.
What is a fair alternative to an in-person oral defense?
Offer an equivalent accessible mode, such as a brief written response, recorded explanation or supervised application to a new case. Keep the same reasoning criteria and provide approved accommodations rather than assuming one delivery format fits everyone.
How can I tell whether a process checkpoint is worth grading?
Ask whether it reveals a decision tied to the learning outcome or enables useful feedback. If a form merely proves that a file was uploaded and does not show reasoning, remove it or make it ungraded.
