A secure API key combines a readable prefix with a separately generated, uniformly random secret. The prefix can identify the product, credential class, version, and environment—such as Stripe’s sk_test_ and sk_live_—but it contributes essentially no secrecy because it is predictable. Security comes from the random body, cryptographically secure generation, least-privilege authorization, protected storage, detection, revocation, and rotation. A 32-byte random body provides 256 bits of entropy; 128 bits is a practical lower bound for many bearer credentials when the threat model permits it.
What makes an API key secure?
The dependable design is a two-layer credential: metadata that humans and tools can recognize, followed by a secret value generated from a cryptographically secure random-number generator (CSPRNG). Treat the prefix as routing and identification data, never as part of the secret.

The readable layer
A prefix can identify the issuing product, credential type, environment, and sometimes a format version. A pattern such as acme_live_ tells an operator that the token belongs to Acme and is intended for production. It also gives automated scanners a stable string to search for. Because an attacker can predict or copy the prefix, it adds effectively zero secret entropy.
The secret layer
The body must be independent, uniformly random bytes. Authorization should be based on that body (or on a secure representation of it), while the metadata is used for routing, display, and policy checks. A leaked prefix is harmless by itself; a leaked body is a credential compromise.

Entropy in one formula
For an alphabet with A possible characters and n independent, uniformly random characters, ideal entropy is n × log2(A) bits. Random bytes are usually the clearest design target: 32 random bytes contain 256 bits of entropy. Encoding those bytes as base64url changes the representation, not the underlying uncertainty; padding or separators do not create additional entropy.
How much entropy should an API key have?
Choose the secret-body size from the consequences of compromise, lifetime, rate limits, and the quality of your controls. A 128-bit body is a practical lower bound for many bearer credentials; 256 bits gives a substantially larger margin and is straightforward to generate and store.

128 bits versus 256 bits
- 128 bits: a reasonable engineering floor for many long-lived or rate-limited API credentials. The exact character count depends on the encoding alphabet.
- 256 bits: the result of 32 uniformly random bytes. It is useful when keys are high impact, long lived, broadly distributed, or exposed to uncertain future computing conditions.
- More characters are not automatically more entropy: a longer string made from biased randomness, timestamps, usernames, or a conventional pseudorandom generator can be weaker than a shorter CSPRNG output.
Generate the body with a CSPRNG
Generation must use an operating-system-backed cryptographic source, not a timestamp, counter, user identifier, or ordinary application pseudorandom function. For example, Python’s standard-library secrets module is intended for security-sensitive random values:
import secrets
secret_body = secrets.token_urlsafe(32) # 32 random bytes, base64url representation
api_key = "acme_live_" + secret_body
The 32-byte input is the security parameter. The printable output may be longer or shorter depending on encoding, but it still represents those same 256 bits. Generate keys on a trusted server or provisioning system, return the plaintext only when policy allows, and do not write it to application logs.
Why does sk_live_ work so well?
The string works because it communicates useful metadata without pretending to be secret. Stripe’s authentication documentation states: “Test mode secret keys have the prefix sk_test_ and live mode secret keys have the prefix sk_live_.” It also warns: “Your API keys carry many privileges, so be sure to keep them secure! Do not share your secret API keys in publicly accessible areas such as GitHub, client-side code, and so forth.”
Each component has an operational job
sksignals a secret-key credential rather than a publishable or public identifier.livedistinguishes production from test mode.- The trailing underscore creates a stable boundary for humans, parsers, and scanners.
An operator can spot a production credential in a log review, and a policy engine can reject a test credential presented to a production endpoint. Neither benefit depends on the prefix being difficult to guess.

Prefix readability is not authorization
Never grant access because a string starts with sk_live_. An attacker can manufacture that text. The server must validate the secret body, confirm that the key is active, enforce its permissions, and check that the key is valid for the target environment.
Should an API key include the environment in its prefix?
Yes, visibly separating test and production credentials reduces accidental mix-ups and improves detection. Use documented, reserved prefixes for each environment and reject a credential when its environment does not match the endpoint or account policy.
Make the distinction unambiguous
Use a consistent grammar such as product_test_ and product_live_, rather than relying on an operator to remember which opaque token belongs where. Keep environment labels out of the random-body calculation; they are metadata. Provision separate keys for test, staging, and production instead of moving one key between them.
Prevent cross-environment use
Environment checks should be enforced server-side. A production API should reject a test-class key even if the secret happens to be valid for another service. This turns a naming convention into a real containment control and makes deployment errors fail early.

What prefix format should a provider choose?
Reserve a collision-resistant product marker and document every key class. A useful format can be assembled from product, environment, credential class, and version fields, followed by the random body.
Recommended design elements
- Product marker: choose a distinctive string that is unlikely to overlap with another provider’s tokens.
- Environment: encode values such as
testandliveexplicitly. - Credential class: distinguish secret, publishable, restricted, or other documented classes.
- Version: include a version when you expect formats or validation rules to evolve.
- Random body: generate independently with a CSPRNG and size it for the threat model.
For example, acme_live_v1_ can precede the secret body. Keep delimiters stable so scanners and parsers do not need a collection of ambiguous regular expressions.

Use an identifier separate from the bearer secret
A non-secret key identifier lets databases, audit records, and support tools refer to a credential without copying the bearer value. Store and display the identifier; reveal the secret body only where it is required. This separation reduces the chance that an index, log, or ticket becomes an accidental credential store.
When are checksums or authenticated encodings useful?
A checksum can catch a transcription or copy-and-paste error before a request is sent. It does not make a stolen key secret and does not replace authorization. If you need tamper-evident, offline syntax validation, use a documented versioned checksum or authenticated encoding while keeping the actual secret body generated randomly.
How do secret scanners recognize leaked API keys?
Scanners look for distinctive provider-specific patterns, often combining a known prefix with a plausible secret-body shape. A marker such as sk_live_ is valuable because it narrows the search and tells responders which environment may be affected.
Provider patterns beat “anything called token” rules
Generic expressions that match every long string produce false positives, including placeholders and test fixtures. Provider-specific patterns improve targeting by requiring the product marker, environment label, and expected body format. OWASP’s playbook lists patterns for sk_live_, pk_live_, and rk_live_; Safeguard’s design guidance likewise describes product markers as useful for both discovery and operator recognition.
Build detection into development and CI
- Scan local changes and pull requests before code is merged.
- Enable repository push protection or equivalent blocking where available.
- Register your provider’s pattern with repository-host secret-scanning programs when they accept external detectors.
- Keep test fixtures and documentation examples clearly nonfunctional so scanners can distinguish them from live material.
- Send detections to an incident workflow that can revoke the credential, notify an owner, and preserve enough metadata for investigation without exposing the secret.
Where should production API keys be stored?
Use a secrets vault or equivalent managed secret store whenever available, with access limited to the service and operators that need the key. Store separate credentials for separate environments and services, and give each key only the permissions required for its job.
Places a production key must not appear
- Browser bundles, client-side JavaScript, or mobile application binaries.
- Public repositories, issue trackers, documentation examples, or paste sites.
- Application logs, analytics events, crash reports, and error messages.
- Framework variables that are compiled into client assets rather than kept server-side.
A server-side environment variable can be appropriate when it is injected securely at runtime and protected by the host, but the variable name itself does not make a value safe. Audit who can read the deployment configuration and prevent diagnostic tooling from echoing it.

Apply least privilege from issuance onward
Create restricted keys for narrowly defined operations instead of one universal credential. A read-only reporting service should not receive write access, and a deployment job should not inherit an administrator key merely because it is convenient. Scope limits reduce the damage window when any one secret is exposed.
What is the correct issuance, rotation, and revocation workflow?
Key syntax is only one part of the design. Treat a credential as a lifecycle object with an owner, scope, environment, status, and replacement path.
- Define the class and scope. Record the service, environment, permissions, owner, and intended lifetime before generating anything.
- Generate random material. Use a CSPRNG for the secret body and construct the documented prefix and version around it.
- Show the plaintext once when practical. Deliver it through a protected channel, then retain only the identifier and a secure verification representation according to your platform’s design.
- Activate with policy checks. Bind the key to its environment, permissions, rate limits, and expiration or review date.
- Monitor usage without logging the secret. Record the key identifier, caller, operation, and outcome, not the bearer value.
- Rotate proactively. Create a replacement, deploy it, verify traffic, then disable the old key after overlap testing. Rotate immediately when personnel with access depart or when exposure is suspected.
- Revoke on detection. Treat a compromised key as exposed, disable it, issue a replacement, investigate where it appeared, and remove copies from repositories, logs, and artifacts.
Design the revocation API and notification path before an incident. A scanner that can identify a leak but cannot trigger a fast disable-and-replace process leaves the most important control to manual improvisation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do common API-key designs compare?
The following comparison separates properties that are often conflated. Readability and scanner detection are operational advantages; only the random body supplies brute-force resistance.
| Design choice | Secret-body entropy | Prefix readability | Scanner detectability | Environment safety | Offline validation | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opaque random token with no prefix | Can be high if generated correctly | Low | Harder to target; more false positives | Mix-ups are easier | Usually limited | Simple appearance, weaker handling signals |
| Product and environment prefix plus random body | Determined by the body | High | Strong provider-specific pattern | Test/live mistakes are easier to catch | Possible with version or checksum | Best balance for most provider-issued keys |
| Long token made from timestamps or counters | Low and predictable | Optional | Possible, but detection does not fix weak secrecy | Depends on naming | May parse cleanly | Not acceptable for bearer authentication |
| One universal administrator key | May be high mathematically | Can be high | Detectable if prefixed | Poor containment | Possible | High blast radius; violates least privilege |
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
A key appears in a public repository
Do not merely delete the commit or rename the variable. Revoke the key, issue a replacement, inspect logs for use, remove exposed copies where possible, and document the incident. Assume the original value is compromised even if the repository was private for part of its history.
A scanner reports a harmless placeholder
Improve the detector rather than disabling scanning. Require the provider prefix and expected body shape, exclude clearly marked test fixtures, and use allowlists narrowly so that a real credential cannot hide behind a broad exception.

A production request carries a test key
Reject it based on the environment metadata, return a diagnostic that does not echo the credential, and fix the deployment’s secret binding. Separate names, vault paths, and access policies for each environment to prevent recurrence.
Operators cannot tell which key to revoke
Introduce a non-secret key identifier and include it in audit events. This lets responders disable one credential without searching logs for the bearer value or revoking every key owned by a service.

What is a practical reference format?
A provider could document a grammar such as product_environment_class_version_random-body, for example acme_live_secret_v1_ followed by 32 CSPRNG-generated bytes encoded with base64url. The exact labels are provider-specific; the non-negotiable properties are independent randomness, clear environment separation, explicit scope, protected storage, scanner coverage, and a tested revoke-and-rotate path.
Before shipping a new key class, verify that a reviewer can identify its environment without decoding it, that a scanner can recognize it without matching every long string, that the wrong environment is rejected, and that an owner can disable and replace one key without taking an entire service offline.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many base64url characters represent 128 bits of entropy?
Base64url carries six bits per character. Twenty-two random characters encode 132 bits, so they provide at least 128 bits when generated uniformly; the exact output length and any padding rules should be documented by the provider.
Recommended Free Tools
Can someone forge a valid API key by copying the prefix?
No. A copied prefix only reproduces metadata. The server must still validate the unpredictable secret body, key status, environment, and permissions.
Should the same API key be shared by several services?
Avoid it when separate credentials are practical. Per-service keys make least-privilege policies, usage attribution, rotation, and incident containment much more precise.
What should happen immediately after a secret-scanning alert?
Treat the credential as exposed, disable it, issue a replacement, and inspect access records for misuse. Then remove the leaked value from repositories, logs, and build artifacts without placing the replacement in the same location.
