To deploy a self-hosted project-management app with Docker Compose, first choose the app and follow its current official installation guide, then install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin, configure that app’s supplied environment file and Compose YAML, create unique secrets, start the documented services, and verify persistence, health checks, HTTPS, and backups. Compose manages the stack; it does not make different project-management apps interchangeable.

The exact database version, ports, service count, environment variables, storage paths, and production requirements depend on the app. Orangescrum Community Edition, Nosdesk, and TaskView demonstrate materially different Compose layouts, so copying one project’s YAML into another project is unsafe. This guide gives you a repeatable workflow while keeping every app-specific decision tied to its vendor documentation.

What does Docker Compose do in a self-hosted project-management deployment?

Docker describes Compose as “a tool for defining and running multi-container applications.” A Compose file declares services, networks, volumes, images, ports, environment variables, and startup relationships in one YAML document. You can then start, stop, rebuild, inspect, and update the stack with the docker compose command. See the Docker Compose documentation for the current command and file-format behavior.

For a project-management app, the stack commonly includes an application container plus a database, and sometimes a cache, migration runner, API service, or web frontend. The arrangement is app-specific:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Orangescrum Community Edition documents a Compose path that starts the application, PostgreSQL, and a web server.
  • Nosdesk documents an application container alongside PostgreSQL and Redis.
  • TaskView documents a database, migration runner, API server, and web app.

Those examples are different architectures, not interchangeable templates. A container can be recreated, but data kept only in its writable layer can disappear when the container is removed. Named volumes or documented bind mounts preserve data beyond a container’s lifetime; they do not constitute a backup.

How do I choose the project-management app before writing Compose YAML?

Pick the application first, then use its supported Compose instructions. Compare its license, included features, service dependencies, documented host requirements, storage paths, and production authentication before creating a directory or editing YAML.

App and documentation License or edition information Documented Compose services Notable requirements or operational notes
Orangescrum Community Edition AGPL-3.0 Community Edition; the product page separates community features from paid cloud and enterprise features. Application, PostgreSQL, and web server. Use the edition’s supplied Compose procedure and configuration; the page does not establish a universal CPU or RAM minimum.
Nosdesk License details are not stated on the cited installation page. Application, PostgreSQL, and Redis. Docker Engine 24 or newer; the guide gives 2 vCPUs and 2 GB RAM as a starting point. Production browser login requires HTTPS because the app uses Secure cookies.
TaskView License details are not stated on the cited installation page. Database, migration runner, API server, and web app. Follow its documented installation sequence, health-conditioned dependencies, secrets, and storage paths rather than adapting another app’s file.
Truetask License details are not stated on the cited installation page. Service layout is not stated in the cited requirements page. The listed requirement is 1 GB RAM minimum and 2 GB recommended for production; these figures apply to Truetask, not Docker Compose generally.

Feature and pricing boundaries matter as much as container count. For example, Orangescrum’s page identifies which capabilities belong to its community edition and which are paid cloud or enterprise features. Treat that split as part of your selection decision rather than assuming a self-hosted edition includes every hosted feature.

What host does the selected app need?

Use a local computer, home server, or VPS only when it meets the selected app’s operating-system, Docker, CPU, memory, storage, and networking requirements. There is no industry-wide resource minimum for Compose applications.

Documented figure Scope and qualification
2 vCPUs and 2 GB RAM Nosdesk’s installation guide, accessed in 2026, calls this enough to start Nosdesk. It is not a recommendation for every Compose app.
1 GB RAM minimum; 2 GB recommended for production Truetask’s installation documentation, accessed in 2026, lists these values for Truetask only.

Also check disk capacity for database growth, uploaded files, logs, image layers, and backups. A removable drive can be one destination for backups on a home server, but it is optional, is not needed for a VPS, and does not replace an independent copy or a tested restore.

How do I install Docker Engine and Compose?

Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin using Docker’s current instructions for the host operating system. Confirm both components before touching the application:

  1. Install Docker Engine from the official package instructions for your Linux distribution, macOS, or Windows environment.
  2. Install or enable the Compose plugin as described in Docker’s documentation.
  3. Run docker --version and docker compose version. Record the versions so an upgrade can be correlated with a change in behavior.
  4. On a shared host, decide which account will run Compose and how that account will access the Docker socket. Avoid granting broader host access than your operations model requires.

Nosdesk specifically requires Docker Engine 24 or newer. Other applications may pin a different Docker, Compose, database, or image version; their installation pages take precedence over a generic host checklist.

How do I prepare the application directory and secrets?

Work in a dedicated directory containing only the selected app’s official Compose file, environment template, and any documented configuration. Do not combine files from two products.

  1. Create a directory with an unambiguous name, such as project-app/, and restrict its permissions to the operators who need it.
  2. Download or copy the Compose file and example environment file from the app’s official installation page. Check the page’s revision or release notes before using it.
  3. Read every required variable: database name, database user, database password, application secret, public URL, mail settings, port, and any cache or worker settings.
  4. Replace sample credentials with long, unique values. Generate mandatory application secrets rather than reusing a password from another service.
  5. Keep the real .env file out of source control. Add it to the repository’s ignore rules and limit filesystem permissions.
  6. Review the build context and add a suitable .dockerignore. Docker’s quickstart warns that secrets placed in a build context can accidentally be baked into an image unless excluded.

Compose reads .env values for interpolation; that convenience does not make the file safe to publish. A secret in a Compose file, Dockerfile, shell history, image layer, or backup archive should be treated as exposed and rotated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I configure the official Compose file without breaking the app?

Change only values the selected app documents: hostnames, externally mapped ports, secrets, storage locations, and explicitly supported image tags. Do not substitute another app’s database version, service name, health check, or volume path.

Ports and public URLs

Map the documented internal service to a host port that is available on your machine. If a reverse proxy will terminate TLS, set the app’s public URL to the externally visible HTTPS address, not an internal container name. Keep database and cache ports private unless the vendor explicitly requires external access.

Databases and caches

Use the database engine and version named by the app guide. Nosdesk’s documented stack includes PostgreSQL and Redis; Orangescrum’s Compose path includes PostgreSQL; TaskView’s layout includes a database and a separate migration runner. A PostgreSQL service from one product is not automatically compatible with another product’s schema or initialization scripts.

Health checks and ordering

Read the app’s health-check definitions and dependency conditions. Docker’s tutorial demonstrates depends_on with condition: service_healthy; Nosdesk and TaskView also document health-conditioned dependencies. A dependency condition can prevent an early connection attempt, but it does not replace database backups or application-level migration checks.

Image tags and updates

Use an explicit image version when the app documents a supported pinning method. Okapi’s installation page distinguishes its downloaded Compose file, which follows its current published image, from editing the image tag to deploy a specific version. Decide whether you will track the vendor’s current file or pin a tested tag, and record that decision before upgrading.

What commands launch and validate the stack?

Run the exact command in the selected app’s guide. The following sequence is a safe validation pattern; the app’s documented command and one-off migration steps override it.

  1. From the application directory, render and validate the merged configuration with docker compose config. Check that interpolated values are present and that no sample credential remains.
  2. Pull or build the images as directed. Orangescrum’s documented example uses docker compose up -d --build; Okapi’s installation example uses docker compose up -d after required secrets are created.
  3. Check container state with docker compose ps. A container that is “running” can still be unready, so read health status where the file defines it.
  4. Inspect startup output with docker compose logs --tail=200 or docker compose logs -f service-name. Look for failed migrations, refused database connections, missing variables, permission errors, and port collisions.
  5. Run any documented one-off migration, administrator-creation, or setup command. Do not invent a migration command from another project.
  6. Open the configured URL and complete the app’s first-run setup. Confirm that a test project, task, comment, attachment, and user login survive a container restart.

If a service repeatedly restarts, stop and correct the first configuration error in its logs rather than repeatedly rebuilding. Rebuilding does not fix an invalid secret, an unsupported database version, or a host port already in use.

How do I expose the app safely in production?

Use the application’s recommended TLS and reverse-proxy arrangement, firewall only the ports you need, and keep database and cache services off the public interface. Nosdesk explicitly requires HTTPS for production browser login because it uses Secure cookies; a plain HTTP test on a private network is not an acceptable production configuration for that app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Point DNS to the host only after the service answers locally.
  • Issue a certificate through the TLS method documented for your proxy and renew it automatically where supported.
  • Set the application’s canonical URL and trusted-host or origin settings to the HTTPS hostname.
  • Use a non-default administrator password and enable any documented multi-factor authentication or session controls.
  • Send logs to a protected location and decide how long to retain them; logs can contain email addresses, task names, or tokens.
  • Apply host security updates and review the app’s release and migration notes before changing images.

Which data must I persist and back up?

Persist every stateful path named by the app, including the database directory and user-upload or attachment directory. A named volume or documented bind mount keeps data when a container is replaced; a backup is a separate, restorable copy.

Identify the state

  • Database content: tasks, users, permissions, comments, and configuration stored in the database.
  • User files: attachments, avatars, exports, and any uploads stored outside the database.
  • Application secrets and configuration: the environment file, reverse-proxy configuration, and any encryption keys required to decrypt stored data.
  • Operational definitions: the Compose file, image tags, migration notes, and scheduled-job settings needed to recreate the deployment.

Make and test a backup

  1. Read the app’s backup instructions and stop writes or place the app in its recommended maintenance mode if consistency requires it.
  2. Create a database dump using the vendor’s documented engine and flags, and copy every documented upload or file volume.
  3. Encrypt the backup and store it separately from the host. A removable external SSD can serve as one local destination; it is not a substitute for another independent copy.
  4. Record the Compose file, image tags, environment-variable names, and secret-recovery process without publishing secret values.
  5. Restore into an isolated test deployment on a schedule. Verify that users can log in, projects open, attachments download, and background jobs run.

Docker’s quickstart shows that docker compose down removes containers and their writable-layer data, while docker compose down -v also removes named volumes. The latter permanently removes the volume data in that example, so never use it as a routine “reset” command when application data must survive.

Okapi directs operators to back up its database before every upgrade. Doska’s installer says it backs up existing database and file volumes before redeployment, but that behavior belongs to Doska’s installer and should not be assumed for another app.

How do I update the deployment without losing work?

Plan an update as a reversible change: read the app’s release notes, back up the database and files, record the current image tags, and identify the rollback path before pulling new images.

  1. Announce maintenance and stop or drain new writes if the app requires it.
  2. Take and verify a fresh database and file backup.
  3. Review required database migrations, environment-variable changes, and minimum Docker or database versions.
  4. Save the current Compose file and image references.
  5. Pull the documented new images or download the vendor’s updated Compose file, then run the app’s migration procedure.
  6. Start the stack and watch health checks and logs until migrations finish.
  7. Test login, permissions, a representative project, an attachment, notifications, and any scheduled workers.
  8. If the release fails, follow the vendor’s rollback instructions and restore the backup when required. Do not downgrade a migrated database unless the vendor explicitly supports it.

What are the most common deployment failures?

The database container is running but the app cannot connect

Check the hostname in the app configuration: inside Compose it is normally the service name, not localhost. Confirm the database user, password, database name, required version, and health condition, then inspect both service logs.

The host port is already in use

Find the process or container occupying the mapped port, then either stop it or choose a documented alternative host port and update the public URL or reverse proxy. Do not expose an internal database port merely to work around a web-port conflict.

Login works locally but fails through the proxy

Verify HTTPS termination, forwarded-protocol headers, the canonical URL, trusted origins, and cookie settings. For Nosdesk, production HTTPS is mandatory for browser login because Secure cookies will not be sent over plain HTTP.

Uploaded files disappear after a restart

Inspect the app’s documented upload path and the Compose volume mapping. Copying only the database is insufficient when attachments live in a separate directory; restore both database and file data in a test environment.

A rebuild keeps repeating the same error

Read the first failing log line and validate the rendered configuration. Rebuilding cannot correct a missing environment variable, invalid secret, unsupported image tag, wrong file permission, or a volume mounted at the wrong path.

What should I verify before calling the deployment complete?

  • The selected app’s official installation guide and supported versions are saved with the deployment notes.
  • Docker Engine and Compose versions satisfy the app’s requirements.
  • All sample credentials have been replaced with unique secrets kept outside tracked files and build contexts.
  • Database, cache, migration, API, web, and worker services show the expected healthy state.
  • Only intended web or proxy ports are reachable from the network.
  • HTTPS, canonical URL, cookies, and trusted-origin settings work from a normal browser.
  • Database and upload paths are backed by named volumes or documented bind mounts.
  • A database dump and file backup have been created, stored separately, and restored successfully in a test deployment.
  • The current Compose file, image tags, migration notes, and rollback procedure are documented.
  • Future upgrades have an owner, maintenance window, and review step for image and database changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a self-hosted project-management app on a home server without a public domain?

Yes, for private-network use you can open the app through the server’s local address if the application supports that mode. Public access, reliable browser cookies, certificate issuance, and inbound firewall rules generally require a domain and the app’s documented HTTPS setup.

Will a named Docker volume protect my data if the disk fails?

No. A volume protects data from ordinary container replacement, not host, filesystem, ransomware, or operator failure. Keep independent database and file backups and periodically prove that they restore.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I move the deployment to a different VPS?

Recreate the same app version and Compose configuration on the new host, restore the database and file volumes, copy required secrets securely, and test before changing DNS. A container-image copy alone does not include application data.

Should I expose PostgreSQL or Redis so another tool can connect?

Normally no: keep those services on the private Compose network and expose only the web entry point. If an integration truly needs database access, follow the app’s security guidance, restrict source addresses, require encryption and authentication, and document the exception.
