To remove a ChatGPT conversation, open its ••• menu, select Delete, and confirm. It vanishes from your account view immediately, then OpenAI schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification and security or legal exceptions. Deletion cannot be undone. If you only want to hide a conversation, choose Archive instead. Chat history and saved memories are separate: deleting a chat does not necessarily remove a memory created from it. For future conversations that should not enter history or create memories, start a Temporary Chat before sending your first message.
What is the difference between deleting, archiving, and using Temporary Chat?
Delete is an irreversible cleanup action for an existing conversation. Archive only removes an existing conversation from the normal sidebar. Temporary Chat is a mode for new conversations; it is not a way to retroactively clean up chats already in your history.

How do I delete one ChatGPT conversation?
Deleting one chat takes only a few clicks, but the confirmation is final. Use this when you want the conversation removed rather than merely hidden.
#1 Best Overall
- Open ChatGPT and display the chat history/sidebar.
- Find the conversation you want to remove.
- Open that conversation’s ••• more-options menu.
- Choose Delete.
- Read the confirmation prompt and confirm the deletion.
The chat disappears from the account view immediately. OpenAI’s 2026 Help Center guidance says permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days, with exceptions for chats that have already been de-identified or disassociated and for retention required by security or legal obligations. The 30-day period is a systems-retention policy, not a recovery window: once you confirm, the chat cannot be restored through the interface.
How do I archive a ChatGPT chat instead of deleting it?
Choose Archive when you want a cleaner sidebar but may need the conversation later. Archiving removes the chat from the regular sidebar without deleting it, and archived chats remain searchable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- In the chat history, locate the conversation.
- Open its ••• menu.
- Select Archive.
To manage archived conversations, open Settings > Data controls > Archived chats. Depending on the interface, the destination may be labeled View archived chats or include a Manage control. From there you can choose Unarchive to return a chat to the normal history or Delete to remove it permanently.
Archive is a visibility change, not a privacy deletion. The conversation remains saved in the account and searchable, and archiving does not remove any saved memory that was created from its contents.
How do I delete or archive all ChatGPT chats?
Bulk controls are in Data controls and can apply to the current account or workspace, including chats associated with projects. Review the scope carefully before confirming.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
- Select Archive all chats if you want to hide everything while keeping it stored, or Delete all chats if you want to remove the conversations.
- Review the confirmation screen and continue.
Delete all chats cannot be undone. Bulk deletion follows the same documented deletion process as an individual chat: chats leave the account view immediately and are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification and security or legal exceptions. Because project chats can be included, check project-specific conversations before using the account-wide control.

How do I find and delete a saved ChatGPT memory?
Saved memories are managed separately from chat history. Deleting a source conversation alone may leave the memory intact, so use Personalization controls when you want ChatGPT to stop retaining a particular fact about you.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Memory.
- Look for the memory-management control. Depending on the account, it may be labeled Manage, Saved memories, or Memory summary.
- Review the listed memories and delete the item you no longer want retained.
Accounts can also show separate switches such as Memory, Reference saved memories, or Reference chat history. Turning a switch off changes future use of that feature; it does not delete past chats, and it is not the same as removing an individual saved memory.
OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That limited retention does not make the memory available as a normal personalization item in your account.
How do I completely remove information ChatGPT remembered about me?
For the strongest removal, delete both the saved memory and the conversation in which you first shared the information. Then check other places where a copy may exist.
- Saved memories or memory summary: remove the specific item through Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Source chat: delete the conversation rather than archiving it.
- Library files: if the information came from an uploaded file that is still in your Library, remove that file separately where the interface provides the option.
- Connected apps: review connected services for copies or permissions that could supply the same information again.
Deleting only the chat does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it. Conversely, deleting a memory does not erase the original conversation. Treat these as two independent records and remove each one that contains the information.
How do I stop ChatGPT from saving future conversations?
Start a Temporary Chat before you send the first message. Temporary Chat is the forward-looking privacy option: it stays out of normal history unless you save it and does not create or update memories while it is temporary.
Rank #3
- Start a new chat.
- Choose Temporary Chat.
- When prompted, select Personalized or Unpersonalized, according to whether you want the temporary session to use existing personalization.
- Send your messages only after the temporary mode is visibly active.
While temporary, the conversation is not used to improve OpenAI models, according to OpenAI’s 2026 guidance, and it does not appear in normal history unless you save it. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat and normal personalization and model-improvement settings apply, so saving defeats the no-history behavior.
Temporary Chat does not clean up older conversations or erase memories already stored. Use the deletion and memory-management procedures above for information that is already in the account.
What should I do before deleting a chat?
Deletion is permanent, so a short check prevents accidental loss or an incomplete privacy cleanup.
- Export anything you need: copy important text or download information before confirming.
- Check for files: note whether the conversation references an uploaded document that is stored separately in a Library.
- Check memories: if the chat contains personal preferences, names, health details, work context, or other facts ChatGPT may have saved, inspect Personalization > Memory as well.
- Check shared or connected sources: remove duplicate copies from connected apps or other people’s systems; deleting your chat cannot erase a copy outside your account.
- Choose archive when uncertain: archive preserves the chat and keeps it searchable, giving you time to decide.
Why can I still find information after deleting a chat?
The most common reason is that you deleted the conversation but not a separate saved memory, Library file, or connected-app copy. Chat history, saved memories, and uploaded or externally connected data are managed through different controls.
The memory still influences replies
Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and remove the relevant saved-memory entry. Turning Memory off alone does not delete old chats or necessarily remove the stored entry.
The chat is still visible
Confirm that you used Delete, not Archive. An archived chat is intentionally retained and can remain searchable under the archived-chat manager.
Rank #4
You expected a deleted chat to disappear from every system immediately
Account-view removal is immediate, while backend deletion is scheduled within 30 days under OpenAI’s policy. De-identification and security or legal retention exceptions can affect what remains in systems.
A temporary conversation appears after you saved it
Saving a Temporary Chat converts it to a regular chat. Its history, personalization, and model-improvement treatment then follow the normal settings rather than temporary-chat behavior.
Which option should I use for common privacy goals?
| Your goal | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Remove one conversation and accept that it cannot return | Delete | Removes it from view immediately and starts the permanent-deletion process. |
| Clean up the sidebar while preserving access | Archive | Hides the chat from the regular sidebar but keeps it searchable and recoverable. |
| Clear the account’s existing history in one operation | Delete all chats | Bulk deletion covers the account or workspace scope shown in Data controls and cannot be undone. |
| Keep a conversation out of history from the start | Temporary Chat | New temporary conversations do not appear in history unless saved and do not create or update memories. |
| Stop a known personal fact from being used for personalization | Delete the saved memory | Memory records are separate from the chat that supplied them. |
| Remove a fact everywhere ChatGPT may retain it | Delete the memory and source chat, then check files and connected apps | No single control covers every possible copy. |
What varies by account, device, or workspace?
OpenAI does not present identical labels and controls to every user. Plan, region, platform, and workspace configuration can change whether you see Memory, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, Saved memories, or a particular archived-chat label.
The underlying distinctions remain the same: Delete removes a chat and cannot be reversed; Archive keeps it stored but moves it out of the normal sidebar; Memory controls govern saved facts separately; and Temporary Chat applies only to new conversations. In a managed workspace, administrators or retention rules may also affect what you can remove or how long systems retain data.
How long does OpenAI retain deleted chats, memories, and Temporary Chats?
OpenAI’s 2026 Help Center documentation describes three different retention statements:
- Deleted saved chats: permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days, except when data was already de-identified or when security or legal obligations require retention.
- Deleted saved memories: logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
- Temporary Chats: a copy may be retained for up to 30 days for safety.
These periods describe backend handling, not continued availability in your account interface. A deleted chat or memory is no longer presented as an ordinary item for you to reopen or use, and a deleted chat cannot be restored.

What is the safest workflow for a full privacy cleanup?
Use a staged process so you do not confuse hiding, deletion, and memory controls.
- Inventory: search chat history and archived chats for the conversations containing the information.
- Preserve essentials: copy anything you need before deleting.
- Remove saved memories: use Settings > Personalization > Memory and delete each related entry.
- Delete source chats: delete individual chats or use Delete all chats after checking its account or workspace scope.
- Review separate storage: remove relevant Library files and disconnect or clean connected-app copies where applicable.
- Prevent recurrence: use Temporary Chat for future conversations that should not enter history or affect memories.
This sequence handles the separate records deliberately: memory, chat history, files, and future sessions. It also avoids the common mistake of archiving a chat when the goal is actual deletion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover a ChatGPT chat after I delete it?
No. OpenAI describes deletion as permanent, and the interface provides no restore function. If you might need the content, copy or export it before confirming deletion, or archive the chat instead.
Does turning off ChatGPT Memory erase information already saved?
No. Disabling the feature changes whether memory is used or updated, but it does not itself remove past chats or existing saved-memory entries. Open the memory manager and delete the specific entries you want gone.
Can an administrator recover a deleted chat in a work or school workspace?
Workspace governance and legal-retention rules can differ from a personal account, and an administrator may control retention or access policies. Check your organization’s policy before assuming that account-level deletion removes every retained copy.
Will deleting a chat remove an uploaded file from ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. A file may be stored separately from the conversation, such as in a Library, so review and delete the file through its own control. Copies supplied by connected apps or downloaded elsewhere also require separate cleanup.
