You can shape Apple Music recommendations by choosing genres and artists, favoriting music you like, and using Suggest Less on items you want fewer similar recommendations for. You can also turn off Use Listening History when a listening session should not influence new recommendations. Apple’s current support instructions do not document a way to manually rearrange, pin, or hide sections on the Home tab.
How do Apple Music recommendations work?
Apple Music uses several signals to personalize what it recommends. Your initial genre and artist choices provide a starting profile. Favorites provide positive feedback about songs, albums, artists, and playlists. Listening history supplies another signal about what you actually play. These controls adjust the information Apple Music uses; they are not a manual editor for the Home tab’s layout.

That distinction matters. You can influence the kinds of music that appear, but Apple does not document switches for dragging a section higher, permanently removing a row, or pinning one playlist to the top of Home. Recommendation changes are signals that Apple Music evaluates over time, not a guaranteed instant replacement of every card currently shown.
Home is the personalized starting point, with tailored recommendations, recently played music, and personal playlists. Within it, Made For You surfaces playlists based on your listening profile and history. New is a separate destination for new releases, mood-based discovery, charts, and other new music, rather than a way to alter your personalized recommendations. Apple describes these surfaces in its guide to recommended songs on Apple Music on the web.

Think of the tabs as serving different jobs: Home adapts to you, Made For You packages that profile into playlists, and New is an editorial and release-focused discovery area. If you want unfamiliar music that still reflects your taste, Discovery Station is another option on iPhone.
How do I set or update my taste preferences?
When Home first prompts you to choose genres and artists, use those choices to give Apple Music a clear starting point. Apple documents a three-level choice for genres: a normal tap for music you like, a double-tap for genres you love, and a touch-and-hold gesture for genres you do not care for. You then make the same kind of choices among the artists displayed.

- Tap genres you like. Double-tap genres you love, and touch and hold genres you do not care for.
- Tap Next, then make the same selections for the artists shown.
Apple says these selections inform recommendations, so be deliberate if another person is helping set up the account. Choosing a broad genre as “love” can send the profile in a different direction from merely marking it as something you like.
Apple’s documented setup is an initial prompt; it does not describe a separate, always-available editor for repeating the process later. If the prompt is no longer displayed, use the item-level feedback controls below to guide what Apple Music recommends. Do not expect a hidden “reset taste profile” button based on the documented controls.
If your first choices were too broad or no longer fit, reinforce the profile with several accurate favorites and use Suggest Less on recurring mistakes. That gives Apple Music current, specific examples without claiming that one action immediately erases older signals.
How do I get more recommendations like a song or album?
Mark music that fits your taste as a favorite. Apple says favoriting songs, albums, artists, and playlists can improve Home recommendations, while favorites can also help organize your Library. A favorite is therefore useful for two purposes: it tells Apple Music what you want more of and gives you a way to find the item again.

Apple’s cross-platform instructions cover iPhone, iPad, and Android. If the Favorite option is missing, Apple recommends updating the relevant operating system or Android app. Availability can vary by country or region, so an absent control is not necessarily evidence that your account is misconfigured. See Apple’s instructions for adding and finding favorites.
Favoriting an album, artist, or playlist adds it to your Library. Whether a favorited song is added to the Library depends on the Add & Delete Favourite Songs setting described by Apple. That means a favorite can serve as a recommendation signal without necessarily putting every song in your Library. If you want both outcomes for songs, check that setting rather than assuming every favorite will appear among saved tracks.
How do I ask Apple Music to recommend less similar music?
Use Suggest Less on a song, album, or playlist that does not suit you. Apple says this feedback leads to fewer suggestions for similar music and helps improve future recommendations. It is more explicit than simply skipping a track, because it tells Apple Music that the item or its musical neighborhood is a poor fit.
Recommended Free Tools
- On iPhone, touch and hold the song, album, or playlist.
- Choose Suggest Less.
- Alternatively, open the item in the Now Playing screen, tap More, and choose the applicable feedback option.
Use the control on the most representative item. If an entire album or playlist is sending recommendations in the wrong direction, apply Suggest Less to that album or playlist instead of repeatedly dismissing individual songs. If only one track is unsuitable but the artist is generally a good fit, apply feedback to the song so you do not imply that you want less of the whole artist.
Choose the item-level option that matches what you want to tell Apple Music: Favorite for music you want to signal positively, or Suggest Less for music you want fewer similar suggestions for. Apple’s iPhone guide to music feedback documents both controls.
How can I keep a listening session out of my recommendations?
Turn off Use Listening History before a session you do not want Apple Music to use as a recommendation signal. This is useful when a child, friend, or guest uses your account, or when you are exploring a style that should not redefine your normal profile.
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Go to Apps > Music.
- Turn off Use Listening History.
- Turn it back on when you want Apple Music to use listening habits again.
Apple says disabling the setting makes Apple Music ignore listening habits when adjusting new recommendations and the contents of Replay playlists. This is broader than excluding one song. Apple also says all music played while listening history is disabled is hidden from your followers, so the setting has a social and privacy effect as well as a recommendation effect.

Remember to restore the setting after the guest session if you want your own listening to shape future recommendations. Apple suggests creating a custom Focus to switch the setting off during another person’s listening session, such as a child’s. A Focus can make the change easier to remember, but it does not create a separate recommendation profile.
Where is the equivalent setting on Mac?
On Mac, open the Music app and choose Music > Settings > General, then change Use Listening History. The Mac guide also documents Favorite and Suggest Less from an item’s More menu. Ratings sync among devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so the account and Sync Library status matter when you expect a change made on one device to appear elsewhere. See Apple’s Mac guide to rating and personalizing music.
The iPhone setting and the Mac setting serve the same documented purpose: keep listening habits from being used for new recommendations while disabled. Apple’s instructions do not describe a per-device recommendation profile, so check the device on which the setting is active when troubleshooting unexpected changes.
Can I rearrange or remove sections from the Home tab?
Apple’s reviewed instructions explain how to influence recommendations, but do not document controls to reorder, hide, or pin Home sections. Treat Home’s recommendation sections as personalized content rather than a layout you can customize directly. You can change the inputs that populate those sections, not their permanent order.

If the goal is to browse a different kind of music, use the discovery destination that fits it instead of looking for a Home layout switch:
- Made For You: personalized playlists based on your listening profile and history. On the web, Apple says these playlists appear there when you add them to your Library.
- Discovery Station: on iPhone, a station of music you have never played, recommended using your listening history and taste profile. Find it under Home > Stations for You. Details are in Apple’s guide to finding new music.
- New: new releases and editorial discovery, including mood-based selections and charts, rather than a personalized Home-section arrangement.
Practical setups for common goals
Improving a stale or inaccurate Home feed
Start by favoriting several songs that genuinely represent your current taste, then favorite a relevant album, artist, or playlist when the broader direction is right. Use Suggest Less on repeated mismatches. This combination supplies both positive and negative signals instead of relying on skips alone. Allow time for the service to incorporate those signals; Apple documents that they improve future recommendations, not that they replace Home instantly.

Letting someone else use your account
Before the other person starts, turn off Use Listening History in Settings > Apps > Music, or use a custom Focus that performs that change for the session. Turn it back on afterward if you want your own plays to influence recommendations and Replay. While it is off, Apple says played music is hidden from followers.

Apple describes these options as inputs that influence recommendations, not as an immediate reset or guaranteed one-action replacement of Home’s contents. Give the service clear positive or negative feedback on relevant items, and check that listening history is enabled if you want your own listening to inform future suggestions.
- A recommendation feels wrong: use Suggest Less on a relevant song, album, or playlist instead of only skipping it.
- Good-fit music is missing: use Favorite on songs, albums, artists, or playlists you want to signal positively.
- Someone else used your account: turn off Use Listening History for that listening session; Apple’s documented control affects future recommendation inputs, Replay contents, and follower visibility.
- A control is missing: check that the app or operating system is up to date; Apple recommends this when Favorite is unavailable. Interfaces and labels can change between versions.
- Changes appear on one device only: verify that devices use the same Apple Account and that Sync Library is enabled where Apple requires it for synchronized ratings.
- You want an entirely different discovery mode: browse New for new and editorial selections, or use Discovery Station for personalized unfamiliar music on iPhone.
Apple’s cited iPhone guidance is versioned for iOS 27 and its Mac personalization guide for macOS 27; its cross-platform favorites article was also recently refreshed. Apple Music availability varies by country or region, so a feature or control may not appear everywhere. Labels and menu locations can change as Apple updates the app, but the documented principles remain the same: provide positive feedback with Favorite, negative feedback with Suggest Less, and pause listening-history input when a session should stay out of your profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Star Ratings to improve Apple Music recommendations?
Apple’s iPhone guide only shows Show Star Ratings when a song already has a rating in a Mac or Windows library and Sync Library is enabled. Ratings apply to songs in your Library and sync across devices signed in to the same Apple Account; Apple does not present them as a general recommendation slider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes favoriting a song always add it to my Apple Music Library?
No. Apple says album, artist, and playlist favorites are added to the Library, but favorite songs depend on the Add & Delete Favourite Songs setting. The cross-platform favorite instructions cover iPhone, iPad, and Android, though availability can differ by region.
Does turning off listening history erase listening data Apple Music has already used?
Apple’s instructions describe stopping use of listening habits for new recommendations and Replay contents while the setting is off; they do not describe deleting previously used listening data. For the documented privacy effect, Apple says music played is hidden from followers while listening history is disabled.
Best Value
Can I reopen the genre-and-artist setup screen later?
Apple documents the choices when Home first prompts you, but the reviewed iPhone instructions do not provide a separate route for reopening that initial setup. If the prompt is gone, use Favorite and Suggest Less on specific music to guide future recommendations.
What is the difference between Favorite and Suggest Less?
Favorite is positive feedback for music you want Apple Music to recognize as a good fit, while Suggest Less asks for fewer recommendations similar to a selected song, album, or playlist. Both are item-level controls documented by Apple.
Will turning off Use Listening History hide my music from followers?
Yes. Apple says all music played while Use Listening History is disabled is hidden from followers. The setting also stops Apple Music from using listening habits for new recommendations and changes Replay contents while it is off.
Can I customize the order of sections on Home?
Apple’s documented controls influence recommendation inputs but do not describe a way to reorder, hide, or pin Home sections. Use New, Made For You, or Discovery Station when you want a different discovery surface.
Why can’t I find Favorite on my device?
Apple recommends updating the relevant operating system or Android app when Favorite is unavailable. Menu placement can vary by item and version, and Apple Music features may vary by country or region.
The Bottom Line
Use genre and artist choices, Favorite, and Suggest Less to steer Apple Music’s recommendations. Turn off Use Listening History for sessions you want excluded from recommendations, Replay, and follower activity. You can change recommendation signals, but Apple does not document a manual editor for rearranging or hiding Home sections.
