To give an AI agent a wallet it can use for payments, create or open a Base smart wallet in the Base app (Coinbase Wallet), copy its address, and fund it with USDC on the Base network. You can buy USDC through Coinbase Onramp, transfer it from a Coinbase account, or send it from another wallet. Keep some ETH on Base when an ERC-20 transfer will need gas. For autonomous software, use a dedicated wallet and configure spending limits before enabling transfers; Coinbase Agentic Wallets, AgentKit and Base MCP provide different ways to connect an agent to wallet operations.
What is an AI-agent wallet on Base, and why does the setup matter?
An AI-agent wallet is a blockchain account whose signing and payment actions are available to software. On Base, that software can hold USDC, send transactions and, where the service supports it, pay for online resources such as inference, data or search. The wallet is still an on-chain account: a mistaken network, address or amount can send funds somewhere they cannot be recovered.

The simplest arrangement is a Base smart wallet used by a person or a small automation. Production systems may instead use managed Coinbase Agentic Wallets, the framework- and wallet-agnostic AgentKit toolkit, or Base MCP to connect an AI tool with Base protocols. These choices affect who controls keys, where policy checks run and how much transaction review your team must perform.
Start with the smallest balance that can complete the job. Keep personal holdings separate from an agent wallet, and do not give an agent unrestricted access merely because a payment flow works in a test.

Which wallet option should I choose for an AI agent?
Choose the Base app smart wallet for a straightforward, human-operated setup. Choose managed Agentic Wallets when you need productized agent operations and advertised guardrails. Choose AgentKit when your developers need flexibility across frameworks and wallet providers. Choose Base MCP when prompt-driven access to Base protocols is the useful interface; in every case, define transaction policy before funding.
| Option | Best for | Funding path | Main control or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base app/Coinbase Wallet smart wallet | A person who wants a simple wallet and onramp | Buy USDC on Base or receive a transfer | Simple interface; network and fee checks remain necessary. |
| Coinbase Agentic Wallets | Production agents needing managed wallet operations | Fund through the chosen Coinbase or Base flow and agent skills | Guardrails, enclave isolation and KYT are advertised; verify product access and terms. |
| AgentKit | Developers who want framework- and wallet-agnostic tooling | Developer-controlled wallet setup and funding | Flexible, but the developer remains responsible for prompt-injection and transfer safety. |
| Base MCP | Prompt-driven interaction with Base protocols | Connected Base Account and funded wallet | Convenient workflows; review every transaction and policy boundary. |
Coinbase describes Agentic Wallets as infrastructure that lets agents “spend, earn, and trade,” with skills for Authenticate, Fund, Send, Trade and Earn. Its product page advertises per-session and per-transaction spend caps, enclave isolation for private keys and know-your-transaction (KYT) screening. Availability, eligibility and terms can change, so confirm them before building around the service.

The repository specifically warns that direct or indirect prompt injection can influence transfers when a funded wallet and a fund-moving action provider are available.
How do I create or access a Base smart wallet?
Use the Base app’s wallet switcher to select the smart wallet, then copy its address. The address is the destination you will provide to Coinbase or another wallet; the network selection must still be Base when you send funds.
- Open the Base app. Sign in using the account method the app presents and open the wallet switcher.
- Select the smart wallet. Confirm that the wallet shown is the one intended for the agent rather than another account.
- Copy the wallet address. Coinbase’s documented flow uses the copy icon. Paste the address into a temporary note or directly into the sending screen; avoid retyping it.
- Record the network. Treat the displayed address as network-specific for this workflow. When a sender asks for a network, choose Base, not a similarly named network.
- Test with a controlled amount. Before a larger transfer, check the destination, asset, network and amount in the preview supplied by the sending service.
A wallet address alone does not tell an agent what it is allowed to do. Keep the address in configuration only where needed, and put policy controls around any signing or sending function. If a developer is managing the wallet, document who can change the agent’s credentials and spending rules.
How can I fund the wallet with USDC on Base?
There are three documented routes: buy USDC on Base in Coinbase Wallet, transfer crypto from Coinbase, or send crypto from another wallet. The first is usually easiest for a new user; the other two are useful when funds already exist elsewhere.
Route A: buy USDC on the Base network
Coinbase Help’s flow is to open Coinbase Wallet, choose Buy, select USDC on Base network, enter an amount, choose an available payment method and confirm. Payment methods vary by country, and network fees may still apply.

- Open Coinbase Wallet and choose Buy.
- Select USDC on Base network, not a USDC listing on another network.
- Enter the amount needed for the agent’s defined task or test.
- Select a payment method offered for your country.
- Review the asset, network, amount and displayed fees, then confirm.
After the purchase, verify that the USDC balance appears in the Base smart wallet before connecting an agent. A successful card or bank authorization is not a substitute for checking the on-chain wallet balance.
Route B: transfer from a Coinbase account
Coinbase documents this path in the Coinbase app as Transfer → Send crypto. The transfer is on-chain and is not instant, so allow time for the balance to arrive before a time-sensitive agent run.
- Open the Coinbase app and choose Transfer, then Send crypto.
- Select the asset you intend to send.
- Choose Base from the network list.
- Select or paste the smart-wallet address.
- Preview the transaction and verify the destination, network, asset and amount.
- Confirm the send and wait for the wallet balance to update.
Do not assume that selecting USDC automatically selects Base. The network choice is an explicit part of Coinbase’s instructions and should be checked every time.

Route C: send from another wallet
In the Base app, select the smart wallet and copy its address. In the sending wallet, paste that address into the To field, select the Base network and complete the sender’s preview and confirmation steps.
- Copy the recipient address from the Base smart wallet.
- Open the sending wallet and start a send transaction.
- Paste the address into To; do not type it manually.
- Select the asset and explicitly select Base as the network.
- Compare the sender’s preview with your intended asset and amount.
- Confirm only after the address and network match.
Sending on a different network, even to a visually identical address, can make the funds unavailable in the intended wallet. Coinbase’s guidance is to identify and select the correct network before confirming.
Do I need ETH if the agent pays in USDC?
Often, yes. Coinbase says ERC-20 transfers require ETH in the wallet to cover the network fee. USDC can be the payment asset while ETH supplies gas for the transaction that moves it.
Keep a small ETH balance on Base when your workflow or transfer requires an ERC-20 transaction. The exact amount depends on network conditions and the actions your agent performs; the documented guidance does not promise a fixed fee or minimum balance. Check the wallet’s displayed fee before sending and replenish ETH before an automated run can stall.

USDC is described by Coinbase as a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar and redeemable one-for-one, backed by dollar-denominated assets in segregated accounts. That description explains its intended value stability; it does not remove network fees, transaction risk or the need to use the correct USDC network.
How do AI agents actually make payments on Base?
Base describes x402 as an HTTP payment protocol with native payment semantics: an API can require payment and an agent can pay as part of a request. In practice, an agent discovers a payable endpoint, receives the payment requirement, signs a transaction with its permitted wallet and retries or completes the request after payment is accepted.
Base’s agent materials describe agents paying USDC for x402-enabled inference, data, search and other services. This is not a claim that every API accepts USDC or x402; the service must implement the protocol and support the network and asset your wallet uses.
Where do Base MCP and agentic.market fit?
Base MCP is presented as a way to connect an AI tool to a Base Account for wallet operations and protocol interactions. It can make a prompt-driven workflow convenient, but the convenience does not replace transaction review. Define which tools may read balances, prepare transactions or actually submit them.
Base also describes agentic.market as a place to discover services. Treat listings and prompts as untrusted input until your application verifies the service, payment request, destination and limits. Discovery should not grant a newly found service authority to move funds.
What does Coinbase Agentic Wallets add?
Coinbase markets Agentic Wallets for autonomous DeFi, machine-economy payments for API keys, compute and data, and agentic commerce. Its page lists spend caps per session and transaction, enclave isolation for private keys and KYT screening. Use those controls where available, and confirm the exact implementation and access terms for your account.
The same page says the x402 standard has been “battle-tested with over 50M transactions.” That is an undated Coinbase vendor claim, not a dated independent statistic; treat it as product marketing context rather than a guarantee of service reliability or safety.

How do I secure an AI-agent wallet before enabling payments?
Security is primarily a permissions problem. A funded wallet plus a tool that can move funds gives an agent a path from text input to an irreversible transaction, so separate the wallet, limit the balance and inspect every policy boundary.
- Use a dedicated wallet. Hold only the funds needed for the task, not personal or long-term assets.
- Set spending caps. Use per-transaction and per-session limits when the chosen infrastructure supports them. A cap should cover the largest legitimate payment, not an unlimited monthly budget.
- Limit action providers. Expose only the wallet operations the agent needs. A read-only balance tool should not also have a send function.
- Assume external text is hostile. AgentKit warns that direct or indirect prompt injection can influence transfers when a funded wallet and fund-moving action provider are both present. Do not let web pages, retrieved documents or user-supplied instructions silently rewrite payment policy.
- Verify every transaction. Check network, asset, destination and amount in the preview before approval. For autonomous submissions, make those checks machine-enforced rather than relying only on a model response.
- Separate test and production funds. Start with a small test balance and a restricted service set. Move to production only after the intended payment path and error handling are confirmed.
- Keep an audit trail. Record purchases, transfers and agent-generated payments. Coinbase notes that tax reporting rules differ by country, so retain records needed for your jurisdiction.
What is a practical setup sequence for a first agent payment?
The following sequence keeps wallet creation, funding and agent permissions separate so a mistake in one stage does not expose a larger balance.
- Create the wallet boundary. Open the Base app, select a dedicated smart wallet and copy its address.
- Fund a test amount. Buy or transfer USDC on Base using one of the documented routes. Add ETH if the planned ERC-20 transfer needs gas.
- Confirm receipt. Check the wallet’s USDC and ETH balances; do not proceed on the basis of a sender confirmation alone.
- Select the software layer. Use the smart wallet directly for a human-reviewed flow, Agentic Wallets for managed agent operations, AgentKit for developer-controlled integrations, or Base MCP for prompt-driven Base interactions.
- Define policy. Specify allowed assets, networks, destinations, maximum amount per transaction and maximum amount per session. Put these limits outside the model’s editable prompt where possible.
- Connect one service. Test a single x402-enabled service or other approved endpoint with the smallest useful payment.
- Review the transaction record. Confirm that the payment went to the expected destination and that the service returned the expected result.
- Expand gradually. Add services or increase limits only after monitoring shows that requests, fees and approvals behave as intended.
What are the most common funding and payment mistakes?
Choosing the wrong network
USDC exists on multiple networks. Selecting an asset named USDC without selecting Base can route the transfer away from the wallet or service you intended. Always verify the network in the send screen and in the receiving service’s instructions.
Funding USDC but no gas asset
An agent may hold the payment asset yet fail when an ERC-20 transfer needs ETH for gas. Check whether the planned action submits an on-chain transfer and keep an appropriate ETH balance on Base.
Assuming an on-chain transfer is instant
Coinbase states that transfers from Coinbase are on-chain and not instant. Schedule automated work with enough time for the balance to arrive, and have the agent detect a confirmed balance before attempting payment.

A natural-language request can be manipulated by untrusted content. Keep payment policy in explicit controls, restrict action providers and require a human preview for transactions that exceed the agent’s routine limits.

A large balance increases the impact of a compromised key, bad destination or prompt injection. Fund only the task-sized amount and use session and transaction caps where available.
Best Value
Assuming every API accepts x402
x402 applies to services that implement the protocol. Confirm that the endpoint advertises x402, supports Base and accepts the asset your wallet holds before treating it as an agent-payment target.
What should I check before moving from a prototype to production?
Production readiness is less about the wallet address than about repeatable controls around it. Confirm that the selected infrastructure exposes the limits, isolation and transaction review your risk model requires. If a feature is advertised but its availability or terms are unclear, verify access before committing application architecture to it.
- Document the wallet owner, operator and recovery process.
- Store the wallet address and network as separate configuration values so a network change cannot be hidden by an unchanged address.
- Define approved destinations and reject transactions outside that list when your tooling permits it.
- Alert on unusual amounts, repeated failures, unexpected assets or requests from unapproved services.
- Keep enough ETH for required gas but avoid treating a large ETH reserve as harmless working capital.
- Review agent prompts, retrieved content and tool responses as untrusted inputs.
- Reconcile wallet activity with your service logs and preserve records for accounting and tax reporting.
Coinbase’s Agentic Wallets, AgentKit and Base MCP solve different parts of the integration problem; none removes the need to decide what the agent may spend and how a transaction is approved. A Base smart wallet with a small USDC balance is sufficient for a carefully supervised first payment, while larger or autonomous deployments need explicit policy and monitoring.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Coinbase account required to fund a Base smart wallet?
No single funding route establishes that requirement. Coinbase Onramp and transfers from Coinbase are documented options, but the wallet can also receive a transfer from another wallet; the sender still has to choose Base and verify the address.
Can an agent pay any API with USDC once the wallet is funded?
No. The endpoint must implement x402 or another compatible payment flow, support Base and accept the asset you are sending. A funded wallet by itself does not make a conventional unpaid API payable.
Do I need a hardware wallet for this workflow?
The documented setup is software-based: the Base app, USDC funding and agent software. Hardware wallets are optional adjacent security products, not a stated requirement for creating or funding the agent wallet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What records should I keep for agent payments?
Keep purchase confirmations, transfer details, transaction hashes, timestamps, asset and network, amount, destination and the service or task that triggered each payment. Coinbase notes that reporting rules differ by country, so use those records with the requirements that apply where you live or operate.
