To control music without reopening your Galaxy Z Fold8, start playback, fold the phone, wake the 5.5-inch Cover Display, and use the music app’s on-screen controls. If the app is no longer visible, swipe down from the top of the Cover Display and use the Android media-player card in notifications or Quick Settings. For smoother handoff between displays, turn on Settings > Advanced features > Continue apps on Cover screen. The exact buttons shown—such as play, pause, skip, scrubbing and output selection—depend on the music app’s media-session support and your One UI revision.

What is the quickest way to control music on the Galaxy Z Fold8 cover screen?

The practical method has two control surfaces. The first is the music app itself, left open on the outer display after you fold the phone. The second is the system media-player card, which is available from notifications or Quick Settings even when the app is not currently on screen.

  1. Open Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music or another compatible player and start a track.
  2. Fold the phone and wake the Cover Display.
  3. If the player remains open, tap its play/pause, previous, next, seek or output controls.
  4. If it does not remain open, swipe down from the top edge and operate the media-player card.

That fallback card is the most consistent way to pause, resume or skip when the app does not continue across the fold. Samsung describes the Cover Display as a surface for quick interactions, while a current Galaxy Z Fold8 review specifically notes that it can be used to find a track on a streaming service.

Why does the Fold8 have two ways to control playback?

Folding changes which display is active, but it does not inherently stop the Android media session created by your player. A compatible app can stay available on the 5.5-inch Cover Display; otherwise, Android can expose the session through its notification media controls.

The app surface

When the player remains open, you get the controls designed by that service. Depending on the app, that may include a large play/pause button, previous and next track, a progress scrubber, queue access, repeat or shuffle and an output selector. The layout and even the presence of individual buttons are app-specific.

The system media-player card

The notification card is generated from the app’s Android media session. It normally offers the transport actions the app publishes, such as pause, resume and skip; some apps also expose seeking, a device picker or other actions. Because it is a system surface, it remains useful when the full player is not visible, but it cannot display controls the app has not published.

What should I set up before folding the phone?

A short preparation check prevents most playback-control problems.

  • Start a track first. The media card is generally created only after the app has an active playback session.
  • Allow the player’s notifications. Android uses the notification area to present the media card. If notifications are blocked, the card may not be available.
  • Enable app continuation. Turn on Continue apps on Cover screen if you want a compatible player to remain open when you fold.
  • Wake the outer display. The controls cannot be used until the Cover Display is awake.
  • Choose your audio route. Playback can use the phone’s speakers, Bluetooth equipment or USB-C audio. The Fold8 has no built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The current Fold8 software context is Android 17 with One UI 9 in the published review, and Samsung’s support listing includes Android 17 user-manual files, including a September 2026 revision. Menu wording can therefore differ slightly from an older screenshot or another One UI update.

How do I keep a music app open after folding?

Use Samsung’s app-continuation setting before you begin playback or while the phone is unfolded.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Select Continue apps on Cover screen.
  4. Enable the setting and make sure the music app is included among compatible apps, if your software presents an app list.
  5. Start playback, then fold the phone and wake the Cover Display.

Samsung describes this feature as allowing compatible apps to remain open on the Cover Display. Compatibility is not universal, so a player may still close or hand off to a different surface when the hinge is closed. When that happens, use the media-player card rather than repeatedly reopening the app.

How do I control playback from the music app on the outer display?

If the app remains open, the interaction is similar to using the player on the main display, only in a smaller layout.

  1. Wake the Cover Display after folding.
  2. Look for the player that was active before you folded. If another screen is shown, return to the app from the Cover Display’s app interface.
  3. Tap the large play or pause control to stop or resume the current track.
  4. Use previous or next to move through the queue. Some services require a second tap on previous to restart a track before moving to the prior item.
  5. Drag the progress bar when the app exposes a scrubber. Small screens make precise seeking difficult, so use short movements and confirm the elapsed-time indicator.
  6. Open the app’s output control if you need to move audio to a Bluetooth device, USB-C accessory or the phone speaker.

The Fold8’s cover screen is intended for quick interactions rather than the expansive view of the 7.6-inch main display. Browsing a long library or editing a queue may still be easier after unfolding, while basic transport controls are suited to the outer screen.

How do I use the notification media-player card?

The card is the fallback when the music app is not visible after folding. It works when the player has an active Android media session and its notifications are permitted.

  1. Wake the Cover Display.
  2. Swipe down from the top edge to open notifications and Quick Settings.
  3. Locate the media-player card for the app that is playing.
  4. Tap play/pause, previous or next. If a seek bar is shown, drag it to another point in the track.
  5. Use the output or device button, when present, to select an available audio destination.
  6. Swipe the panel away when finished; playback continues according to the action you selected.

Not every card contains every action. The app decides which media-session commands it publishes, and One UI can change the card’s arrangement between revisions. Treat the card as the reliable common denominator, not as a promise that every service will expose an identical set of buttons.

Which controls can appear on the Fold8 cover screen?

The following table shows the common actions and the conditions that determine whether each appears.

Control Where it may appear What determines availability
Play or pause Music app and media-player card Usually available while the app has an active media session.
Previous or next track Music app and media-player card Shown only when the app publishes skip commands.
Progress scrubber Often in the full app; sometimes in the media card Depends on the app exposing seek information and controls.
Audio-output selector App, media card or both Depends on the app and the audio devices currently connected.
Queue, shuffle or repeat Usually the full app Service-specific; the system card may omit these actions.

Because Samsung has not published a complete app-by-app matrix for the standard Fold8, the safest expectation is functional rather than identical: a supported player can remain open, and an active media session can provide system controls.

How do Spotify, YouTube Music and Apple Music differ on the Cover Display?

All three can be used as examples of players that may expose playback controls, but their exact Cover Display behavior is not guaranteed to be the same. The deciding factors are whether the app remains open through Continue apps on Cover screen and which commands its Android media session publishes.

If the app stays open

You will see that service’s own outer-screen layout. One app may offer a prominent scrubber and output picker, while another may prioritize album art and only show transport buttons. Use the controls that are visible rather than looking for a Samsung-defined arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the app closes or is not foregrounded

Open the notification shade and use the media-player card. Resume playback once inside the app if necessary, then check the card again. This approach avoids assuming that a particular service supports seamless app continuation.

If an action is missing

A missing skip, seek or output button usually means the app did not publish that command to Android at that moment. It is not evidence that the Fold8’s Cover Display cannot perform the action in every player.

Why are my music controls missing after I fold the Galaxy Z Fold8?

Work through the symptoms below in order, starting with an active playback session.

Symptom Likely cause Recovery
The music app disappears when folded. App continuation is off or the app is not compatible. Enable Settings > Advanced features > Continue apps on Cover screen. If it still closes, use the notification media card.
No media-player card appears. Playback has not started, or the app’s notifications are blocked. Resume a track in the app, permit its notifications, then swipe down from the top of the Cover Display again.
The card appears but has only limited buttons. The app’s media session does not publish additional commands. Open the full app for queue, shuffle, repeat or other service-specific functions.
The card controls a different player. Another app has the active media session. Stop or pause the other player, start the intended app again and reopen the media panel.
Controls respond but audio comes from the wrong device. The current output route is different from the one you expected. Use the output selector in the app or media card and choose the connected speaker, headphones or phone audio.
Buttons or labels do not match a guide. One UI or the music app has changed its layout. Look for equivalent play, skip, seek and output actions; Samsung’s Android 17 manuals include revisions that may differ from older instructions.

What audio devices can I use while controlling playback from the cover screen?

Control location and audio destination are separate. You can operate the player on the Cover Display while sound comes from the phone, a wireless accessory or a USB-C connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Audio route What you need Important limitation
Fold8 speakers Nothing extra Playback uses the phone’s built-in speakers.
Bluetooth earbuds or speaker Paired Bluetooth audio device The output picker must show the connected device before you select it.
USB-C headphones USB-C headphones They use the phone’s USB-C port.
3.5 mm wired headphones USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio adapter plus headphones The Fold8 has no built-in 3.5 mm jack.

What Hi-Fi describes wired Apple Music listening through a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter and also notes USB-C audio support. None of these accessories is required for Cover Display controls; they only change where the sound is heard.

Does the Fold8’s Flex mode panel provide the same music controls?

Related Samsung foldable guidance describes a Flex mode panel with media playback, volume and brightness controls, but that guidance is written for the Fold8 Ultra. It should not be treated as proof that every standard Galaxy Z Fold8 app exposes the same panel or buttons.

For the standard Fold8, rely on the two documented surfaces: the compatible app left open on the Cover Display and the notification media-player card. If a Flex-style panel appears on your software, regard it as an additional convenience rather than a guaranteed compatibility layer.

What does the Fold8’s display setup mean for music control?

The current Fold8 configuration pairs a 5.5-inch Cover Display with a 7.6-inch main display. Samsung’s mobile specialist characterizes the outer screen as suited to quick responses and short-form interactions, while the larger inner screen is intended for immersive tasks such as browsing and streaming.

That division explains the most efficient workflow: use the Cover Display for transport actions and quick track selection, then unfold when you need to browse a large catalog, inspect a queue or make detailed changes inside the app. Folding is not a requirement for playback; it simply lets you keep routine controls on the outside.

What should I do if playback stops entirely?

First distinguish a missing control from a stopped session. If the app is visible, tap play and wait for the track to resume before opening the notification panel. If the app is not visible, reopen it on the Cover Display, start the track once, then fold again and check for the media card.

If playback stops whenever the phone folds, the player may not support app continuation on your current software. Leave Continue apps on Cover screen enabled, but use the card as the normal control path rather than expecting the app window to persist.

How should I use the Cover Display day to day?

  • For a quick pause: wake the outer screen and tap the visible play/pause control, or open the media card if the app is not there.
  • For skipping: use next or previous wherever the app exposes those commands; the card may provide fewer options than the full player.
  • For finding another track: use the app on the Cover Display when it remains open; unfold for a broader library view.
  • For changing headphones or speakers: open the output selector in the app or media card and confirm the destination.
  • For inconsistent behavior: restart playback in the app, verify notifications, and then return to the card.

This approach keeps the outer display focused on the controls it handles best while preserving the full player on the inner display when more detailed navigation is needed.

Which Fold8 software details matter when following instructions?

Samsung’s support listing identifies the Fold8 model as SM-F971B and includes Android 17 user-manual files, with a revision dated September 2026. A current review describes the handset as running Android 17 with One UI 9. If your phone uses a different update, the setting names, panel layout or icon positions may differ even though the underlying workflow remains the same.

When an on-screen label does not exactly match these instructions, look for the equivalent options under Advanced features, notifications or the media controls panel. Do not infer that a control is unavailable solely because its icon moved after an update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will every music app show a media-player card on the Fold8?

No. The card depends on an active Android media session and notification access. Apps that do not publish media-session commands, or whose notifications are blocked, may not provide a usable card.

Does the Fold8 Ultra Flex panel guarantee the same controls on the regular Fold8?

No. The related Flex-panel guidance is written for the Fold8 Ultra and cannot establish identical behavior on the standard Fold8. Use the app surface or notification media card as the dependable methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use wired headphones while controlling playback from the outer screen?

Yes, but the Fold8 has no 3.5 mm headphone jack. Use USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter; the audio accessory does not change where the playback controls appear.

Why do the button names change after a Fold8 update?

Samsung’s Android 17 manuals include revisions, and music apps can redesign their media controls independently. Match the function—play, skip, seek or output—rather than relying on an older icon position.
