Use Screen Time on iPhone to set daily app limits or scheduled Downtime, and Digital Wellbeing on Android to set daily app timers or schedule Focus mode. An allowance limits how long an app or category can be used; a focus window pauses selected apps during a chosen period. The controls differ in what happens when a limit is reached and how you make exceptions, so choose the control that fits the job—not just the one with “focus” in its name.

Menu labels and availability can vary by operating-system version, Android device maker, account type, and family setup. Apple documents its newer Screen Time Schedule and Time Allowances for iOS 27 or later; Android’s Google-documented steps may differ on some devices.

Which control should I use: a daily limit or a focus schedule?

Use a daily limit when you want to meter total time in an app or category. Use a scheduled restriction when you want certain apps unavailable during a particular window, such as work, study, dinner, or bedtime.

The distinction matters because a daily allowance and a focus window solve different problems. A 30-minute daily allowance can run out at any time of day; a two-hour focus period is tied to a schedule, not a fixed amount of use. You can combine them where your phone offers both: for example, set a daily limit for social apps and schedule a separate block for study time.

  • iPhone daily use: Screen Time App Limits. Apple describes these as daily time limits for app use.
  • iPhone scheduled availability: Downtime, or Screen Time Schedule on supported newer software.
  • Android daily use: Digital Wellbeing App timers.
  • Android scheduled availability: Digital Wellbeing Focus mode. Bedtime mode is a separate option for overnight routines.

Before setting anything, decide whether your goal is to cap use, make selected apps unavailable for a block of time, or do both. A timer is a poor substitute for a schedule if you want the restriction to begin at a particular hour: it only limits the day’s total use. Conversely, a focus schedule does not set a total daily allowance. Choosing the right control first makes it easier to understand why an app is blocked—or why it is still available—later.

How do I set app limits on iPhone?

Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits. Add a limit, choose one or more categories or individual apps, then set the daily allowance. If Screen Time activity is not enabled, turn on App & Website Activity when prompted.

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time. If necessary, turn on App & Website Activity.
  2. Tap App Limits > Add Limit.
  3. Select an app category to limit the category, or open a category and select specific apps. You can select more than one item.
  4. Tap Next, choose the amount of time allowed, and use Customize Days if you want different limits on different days.
  5. Review which apps and categories are selected, then save the limit.

A category limit is useful when you want one rule for a group of apps; selecting individual apps gives more precise control. Check the selection before saving, especially if a category contains an app you need for work, navigation, health, or family communication.

For example, a category-wide rule can make sense when your aim is to reduce time across a group such as social apps. If only one app is the concern, open its category and choose that app rather than limiting every app in the group. When your routine changes across the week, use Customize Days to assign different amounts on different days instead of creating a schedule that does not match the goal.

What happens when the iPhone limit is reached?

App Limits are daily limits, not scheduled windows. Screen Time also has controls for which apps remain available during restrictions; use Always Allowed to preserve essential apps and contacts. The exact prompt and enforcement can depend on the restriction and settings in use, so check the device’s Screen Time options rather than assuming every limit behaves like a full block.

Apple Support describes App Limits as a way to “control how much time you spend in apps by setting daily time limits.” That describes the allowance, not a fixed period of the day: a limit can be used up whenever the app time accumulates. If you need a firm unavailable period, set up Downtime separately and decide whether Block at Downtime should be enabled.

How do I schedule Downtime on iPhone?

Use Settings > Screen Time > Downtime to set a recurring period or start a restriction immediately. Downtime limits availability during the chosen hours, while Always Allowed determines which apps and contacts can remain usable.

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time > Downtime.
  2. Choose to turn Downtime on immediately or schedule it to recur.
  3. For a recurring schedule, select Every Day or Customize Days, then set the start and end times.
  4. Open Always Allowed and check that essential apps and contacts remain available during restricted periods.
  5. Choose whether to enable Block at Downtime. When it is on, restricted apps cannot be opened; when it is off, Screen Time gives a reminder and lets the user continue.

Plan exceptions before relying on Downtime. Apple says calls, messages, and apps selected as allowed remain available during Downtime. Consider whether the person using the phone needs access to emergency communication, navigation, health tools, work apps, or family contacts, and make the appropriate selections in Always Allowed.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

This is a meaningful choice, not just a setup detail. Block at Downtime is the option for a stricter restriction; with it off, the user can continue after seeing a reminder. Always Allowed is the companion control for access that should remain possible even when other apps are restricted. Review both controls whenever the schedule changes, particularly if the phone is used for work, health, navigation, or contact with family.

What are Screen Time Schedule and Time Allowances?

Apple’s newer Screen Time documentation describes named schedule windows—such as work, dinner, or evening—and selected allowance categories within those windows. Time Allowances can apply to categories including Entertainment, Games, and Social Media, and can also use a daily total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These newer features require iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or visionOS 27 or later across the relevant Apple devices, according to Apple’s documentation. If the options are missing, first check the device’s software version; do not assume the older Downtime and App Limits menus have the same scheduling capabilities.

The named windows help distinguish a time-based restriction from a usage allowance. A work or dinner window describes when the schedule applies; the selected allowance categories describe what time can be used within the applicable setup. If you only need a recurring block, the established Downtime control remains the relevant path on versions without the newer Schedule feature.

How do I set app timers on Android?

Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > App timers, choose an app, set its daily allowance, and tap OK. Google says that when the timer runs out, the app closes and its icon dims; timers reset at midnight.

  1. Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing. The usage chart can show screen time, app use, unlocks, and notifications.
  2. Tap App timers.
  3. Choose the app you want to limit.
  4. Set the allowed time and tap OK.
  5. Repeat for any other apps that need separate daily allowances.

App timers are suited to a per-app daily budget. Google notes that some work or school accounts may not support them. If App timers are unavailable, the account type or device-specific software may be the reason; the exact options can vary across Android devices.

Use the Digital Wellbeing chart as a starting point if you are unsure which app needs a timer: it includes screen time, unlocks, and notifications, alongside app-use information. The chart helps you inspect activity; the timer is the setting that imposes the daily allowance. Google Android Help explains that once time runs out, “the app closes and its icon dims.” Timers reset at midnight, so an exhausted allowance is not a permanent block.

How do I schedule Focus mode on Android?

Use Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode to select apps to pause, then turn the mode on or set it to start automatically. While Focus mode is active, selected apps cannot be used and their notifications are suppressed.

  2. Select the apps you want paused during the focus period.
  3. Turn Focus mode on immediately, or choose the scheduling option shown on your device and set the recurring period.
  4. To temporarily use a paused app, choose Take a break and select the offered break period.

Google’s steps and labels may differ by device. If Focus mode does not appear in the expected place, search Settings for “Digital Wellbeing” or “Focus mode”; a device maker may organize the controls differently.

To block apps during a focus session, make sure each distracting app is selected in Focus mode and that the mode is actually active. An app timer alone does not create that scheduled block: it meters daily usage, while Focus mode pauses selected apps and suppresses their notifications during the active period. Take a break is intended as a temporary exception; if you need an app to remain accessible every time, reconsider whether it belongs in the paused-app selection.

When should I use Android Bedtime mode?

Bedtime mode is intended for overnight routines rather than an ordinary work or study block. Depending on the device and configuration, it can be scheduled by time or while the phone is charging, and can change display behavior such as grayscale, dark screen, dimmed wallpaper, or dark theme.

Choose Bedtime mode when the goal is an overnight routine and display changes are useful. For a daytime class, work period, or study session, Focus mode is the more directly relevant control because it pauses the apps you select and suppresses their notifications during the focus block.

How do iPhone and Android differ when a limit is reached?

The clearest difference is that the controls enforce limits in different ways: iPhone Downtime can either block restricted apps or allow continued use with a reminder, while Android’s app timer closes and dims the timed app. Android Focus mode pauses selected apps and suppresses their notifications during the active period.

Need iPhone Android
Daily app or category allowance Screen Time > App Limits; choose categories or individual apps Digital Wellbeing > App timers; set a daily allowance for an app
Scheduled restricted period Screen Time > Downtime; newer Screen Time Schedule features require iOS 27 or later Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode; select apps and turn on or schedule the mode
What happens at the limit With Block at Downtime on, restricted apps cannot be opened; with it off, a reminder appears and use can continue At an app timer limit, the app closes and its icon dims; the timer resets at midnight
Exceptions Always Allowed can preserve selected apps and contacts Take a break temporarily unpauses apps during Focus mode
Overnight routine Downtime can be scheduled for set hours Bedtime mode supports overnight scheduling, including by time or while charging

Neither platform’s labels should be assumed to match another phone exactly. Apple’s newer named schedules and allowance categories are version-dependent; Android settings can vary by manufacturer, and some work or school accounts may not support app timers.

Think of the differences along three axes. First, App Limits and App timers set daily amounts, whereas Downtime and Focus mode govern availability during selected hours. Second, their enforcement differs: Android’s timer closes and dims the app at the allowance, but iPhone’s Downtime behavior depends on Block at Downtime. Third, the exception model differs: iPhone can keep selected apps and contacts available with Always Allowed, while Android Focus mode offers a temporary Take a break. These distinctions matter when you are deciding whether a setting will merely remind someone, stop access, or let an essential contact method remain usable.

There is no single universal menu path for every phone. Apple’s newer Schedule and Time Allowances depend on the software version, Android manufacturers can arrange settings differently, and account type can affect whether an Android timer is supported. If a control is missing, check the version and account setup before assuming the phone cannot offer a similar option.

How can I limit a child’s screen time?

Both platforms provide family-management routes for a child’s device: Apple documents Screen Time management through Family Sharing, while Google documents supervised accounts and Family Link-related controls, including child-device schedules and restrictions. Use the family controls associated with the child’s account and device rather than treating a child’s phone as an unmanaged adult device.

On a child’s iPhone

Apple’s Family Sharing setup can be used to manage a child’s Screen Time, including app limits and scheduled restrictions. After configuring limits, review Always Allowed so the child can still reach the apps and contacts needed for safety and ordinary family communication.

On a child’s Android device

Google’s family documentation covers supervised accounts and child-device schedules, including restriction and downtime-style planning. Available controls depend on the account and device setup, so follow the options presented for that supervised account.

Families managing devices on both platforms may also consider a cross-platform parental-control app if native family tools do not meet their needs. Check current support for both the parent’s and child’s devices and the controls included before choosing one; the built-in settings above do not require separate software.

For either platform, start with the native family-management route tied to the child’s account. Apple’s documented path uses Family Sharing and child Screen Time controls; Google’s uses supervised accounts and Family Link-related options. The names and available scheduling controls are not interchangeable, so check the options for the actual parent and child account configuration rather than assuming the same menu appears on both platforms. Once rules are set, confirm that essential communication remains available and that the schedule matches the child’s routine.

What should I check if a limit or schedule does not work?

First verify that the right control is enabled and that the selected apps, categories, days, and hours match what you intended. Then check version, device, and account constraints, because the same menu name or capability is not guaranteed across all phones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The iPhone option is missing: Check the iOS version. Apple’s newer Screen Time Schedule and Time Allowances require iOS 27 or later; older versions may show the established App Limits and Downtime controls instead.
  • An iPhone app is unavailable when it should be: Review the selected categories and apps under App Limits, the active Downtime hours, and Always Allowed. Confirm whether Block at Downtime is on if you expect a hard block.
  • An Android timer is unavailable: Google says some work or school accounts may not support app timers. Device makers can also vary the settings layout.
  • An Android app is still receiving interruptions during a study block: Confirm that the app was selected in Focus mode and that Focus mode is active. App timers and Focus mode have different purposes; the timer is a daily allowance, while Focus mode pauses selected apps and suppresses their notifications.
  • A schedule runs on the wrong days or hours: Reopen the schedule and check the start and end times, selected days, and whether it is scheduled or only turned on immediately.
  • An essential app is blocked: On iPhone, review Always Allowed. On Android Focus mode, use Take a break for temporary access if available, then adjust the selected paused apps if the exception needs to be permanent.

Also check that you chose the right kind of rule. If a restriction starts at a set time, review the scheduled window and active days. If an app stops working after a certain amount of use, check the daily allowance and remember that Android timers reset at midnight. If notifications are the problem rather than app access itself, verify that the selected app is paused under Android Focus mode; the documented notification suppression applies to Focus mode, not merely to the daily App timer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do app limits turn off notifications too?

A daily timer and a focus block are not interchangeable. Google specifically documents notification suppression for Android Focus mode; its App timer guidance describes the app closing and its icon dimming when time runs out.

Can I use different app limits on weekdays and weekends?

On iPhone, App Limits includes Customize Days, so you can set different daily amounts for different days. Android’s documented App timers flow sets an app’s daily allowance; scheduling a focus window is a separate Digital Wellbeing control.

Can a child’s screen-time rules be managed from a parent’s device?

Apple documents managing a child’s Screen Time through Family Sharing, and Google documents supervised accounts and Family Link-related controls. The exact setup depends on the child’s account and device, so use the platform’s family-management path rather than relying only on settings made on the child’s phone.

How do I block apps during Focus mode on Android?

Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode, select the apps to pause, then turn Focus mode on or set its schedule. Selected apps cannot be used and their notifications are suppressed while the mode is active. Use Take a break for temporary access.

Why can’t I find App timers on my Android phone?

Google notes that some work or school accounts may not support App timers, and Android settings can vary by device maker. Check the account type and look for Digital Wellbeing in Settings; labels and placement may differ.

What is the difference between iPhone Downtime and App Limits?

App Limits meter daily use for selected apps or categories. Downtime restricts availability during chosen hours. With Block at Downtime enabled, restricted apps cannot be opened; with it off, Screen Time shows a reminder and use can continue.

Does Android Focus mode work like an app timer?

No. An App timer sets a daily allowance for an app and resets at midnight. Focus mode pauses selected apps and suppresses their notifications during an active focus period; Take a break temporarily unpauses them.

The Bottom Line

For a daily allowance, use iPhone Screen Time App Limits or Android Digital Wellbeing App timers. For a scheduled block, use iPhone Downtime or Android Focus mode, then configure exceptions before relying on the restriction. Check software version, device, and account details if a menu or feature is missing.
