The simplest way to use an LLM running on an Android phone from a computer is to run the phone app’s LAN server. Put both devices on the same private Wi-Fi network, load a model on the phone, set the server password, and open the address shown by the app with /ui appended. For scripts and desktop clients, use the same address with /v1 as the OpenAI-compatible API base.

If you need a development workflow instead of a ready-made server, run llama.cpp in Termux without root, or use USB debugging and ADB to install an app and transfer model files. The phone still needs an HTTP server for browser or API access; ADB by itself is an installation and file-transfer channel, not a chat interface.

What is the quickest way to access an Android phone’s local LLM from a computer?

Use an Android local-LLM app with a LAN-server feature. This avoids compiling software and gives you two computer-side entry points: a browser interface at the app’s /ui address and an OpenAI-compatible API at its /v1 base URL. The phone performs inference locally while the computer supplies the screen, keyboard, scripts or compatible client.

Pocket LLM documents this arrangement: its selected on-device model can be exposed to another device on the same private network, and the same server provides an OpenAI-compatible API. Its web interface requires a password of at least eight characters. Treat the displayed address, port and password requirement as authoritative for your installed app version.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What the connection does and does not do

  • The model weights and generation run on the Android phone.
  • The computer sends prompts and receives responses over the local network.
  • An internet connection is not required after the app, model and any needed packages are already on the phone.
  • The computer does not gain control of the phone’s screen or files merely by opening the chat page.
  • A command-line runtime such as llama-cli is not automatically a network service; you must add an HTTP-serving layer or use an app that includes one.

What do I need before connecting?

Phone and computer

  • An Android phone capable of running the chosen quantized model with enough free memory for the model, runtime overhead and context.
  • A computer with a modern browser, or software that can call an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  • Both devices connected to the same private Wi-Fi network for the LAN method. Guest networks often isolate clients, so the phone may be unable to reach the computer even when both show the same Wi-Fi name.
  • A model already downloaded into the Android app. Model format and storage location depend on the app; GGUF is the format used by the documented llama.cpp workflow.

Credentials and network details

When the app asks for a web-UI password, create a strong password of at least eight characters and save it. Note the complete address shown after starting the server, including the phone’s private IP address and port. Do not substitute the computer’s address, a public IP address or a remembered port from another session.

When a cable is useful

A USB-C data cable, not a charge-only cable, is useful for enabling USB debugging, installing an APK, moving a large model and collecting logs. A cable is optional for ordinary LAN chat once the app and model are installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I connect through an Android app’s LAN server?

  1. Join one private network. Connect the phone and computer to the same home or office Wi-Fi. Turn off a VPN temporarily if it changes routing or blocks local-device traffic.
  2. Load the model on the phone. Open the local-LLM app and select a model that fits the phone’s available memory. Wait until loading finishes before starting the server.
  3. Open the LAN-server control. The label varies by app, but it is normally in a server, sharing or settings screen. Select the option that exposes the currently selected on-device model.
  4. Set the web password. Enter a strong password meeting the app’s minimum; Pocket LLM specifies eight or more characters. Save the setting before starting the service.
  5. Start the server. Keep the app open until it reports that the service is listening. Copy the exact host address and port displayed on screen.
  6. Open the browser interface. On the computer, enter the displayed address followed by /ui, for example http://192.168.1.42:PORT/ui. Replace the example host and port with the values shown by your phone; do not copy the example literally.
  7. Sign in and test. Enter the server password, send a short prompt and confirm that tokens stream back. A successful response proves network reachability, model loading and inference are all working.
  8. Stop the service when finished. Ending the LAN server prevents other devices on the same network from using it and reduces battery and heat.

What should I enter in the browser?

Use the phone URL supplied by the app, not an app-store address or the phone’s Bluetooth name. The /ui suffix selects the browser client. If the app already displays a URL ending in /ui, use it unchanged.

Why does the address use a private IP?

Addresses such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x identify devices inside a local network. They normally work only while the phone and computer remain connected to that network, which limits exposure compared with publishing the service on the internet.

How do I use the phone model from a script or desktop client?

Use the same server’s OpenAI-compatible base URL. If the app displays http://192.168.1.42:8080, the API base is that host with /v1 appended: http://192.168.1.42:8080/v1. A compatible tool can then send chat-completion requests to the server instead of to a cloud provider.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Test the endpoint with curl

The exact authentication header, if any, is app-specific. Some servers protect the web UI with a password while exposing API authentication settings separately, so check the app’s server screen before adding credentials. A basic request shape is:

curl http://PHONE_IP:PORT/v1/chat/completions
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json'
  -d '{"model":"MODEL_ID","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Write one sentence about local inference."}]}'

Replace PHONE_IP, PORT and MODEL_ID with values supplied by the app. If the server requires authentication, add the method it documents rather than guessing a bearer token. A JSON response containing an assistant message confirms that the computer can use the phone as a local model endpoint.

Configure a compatible client

  1. Find the client’s provider, custom endpoint or OpenAI-compatible settings.
  2. Set the base URL to the phone address ending in /v1; do not append /chat/completions unless the client specifically asks for a full route.
  3. Enter the model identifier shown by the server.
  4. Supply the app’s required key or password in the client’s authentication field, if the app provides one.
  5. Send a short test prompt before importing a large workflow.

Because the endpoint is local, cloud account keys are not inherently required. A client may still insist on a non-empty key field for compatibility; use the local server’s documented value or a dummy value only when the server explicitly ignores that field.

Can I run llama.cpp on the phone and use it from a PC?

Yes. The official Android guidance for llama.cpp describes both an Android Studio binding and a Termux route. Termux runs llama.cpp without root and is useful when you want command-line control, but a plain command-line process serves the phone terminal only. To reach it from a computer, add a network server or choose an Android app that wraps the runtime with an HTTP interface.

Build the Termux runtime

  1. Install Termux from a trusted, current source and open it on the phone.
  2. Update its package indexes and installed packages with the update commands appropriate to your Termux release.
  3. Install the build tools required by the current llama.cpp Android instructions, including Git and CMake; install the Android support library when the instructions for your build require it.
  4. Clone or otherwise obtain the llama.cpp source, then configure and build it with CMake. A typical build pattern is cmake -B build followed by cmake --build build --config Release; use the project’s current Android instructions if options differ.
  5. Copy a GGUF model into the Termux home directory. Keeping the file there avoids many Android storage-permission and path problems and follows llama.cpp’s documented recommendation.
  6. Run llama-cli against the model. For example, ./build/bin/llama-cli -m ~/model.gguf -c 2048 uses a deliberately conservative context size; adjust the binary path and model filename to your build.

Package names, build flags and binary locations can change between llama.cpp revisions and Termux packages. If a command fails, use the current Android page for the exact option rather than copying a command from an older tutorial.

Why start with a small context?

Context memory is in addition to the model’s weights and runtime buffers. A large context can create a sudden memory spike, causing Android to kill the process or terminate the Termux session. Start with a conservative value, verify stability, then increase it in small steps while watching free memory and temperature.

Turning a CLI into a network service

The CLI is ideal for checking that the model loads and generating text locally. It does not, by itself, provide a browser page or OpenAI-compatible endpoint. To connect from a computer, run a llama.cpp server component or place the model behind an Android application that listens on the phone’s private IP and port. Configure that service with authentication and keep it limited to the private network.

How do USB debugging and ADB fit into the setup?

ADB is the practical path for installation, transfer and debugging. It does not replace the LAN server. A phone-side app or HTTP process must still listen for requests if the computer is meant to chat through a browser or API.

Enable and verify ADB

  1. On Android, open the device’s software-information page, tap the build-number entry repeatedly until Developer options are enabled, then turn on USB debugging.
  2. Install Android SDK Platform-Tools on the computer.
  3. Connect the phone with a USB-C data cable and accept the phone’s authorization prompt.
  4. Run adb devices. The phone should appear with an authorized status; an unauthorized entry means the prompt was not accepted.

Install an APK and transfer a model

For a custom MLC LLM application or another development build, install the package with adb install path/to/app.apk. A generic model transfer is adb push path/to/model.gguf /sdcard/Download/, after which the app must be given access to that location. Follow the app’s documented model directory and configuration requirements; some runtimes copy weights into app-specific storage instead.

ADB is especially useful when a model is several gigabytes, when Wi-Fi transfer is unreliable, or when you need log output during development. Once the model is installed and the phone-side server is running, switch to the LAN address for normal computer use.

Which connection method should I choose?

Method Best for Computer access Main trade-off
LAN-server Android app Browser chat, scripts and compatible desktop clients /ui and OpenAI-compatible /v1 Least setup, but you depend on the app’s server and model controls
Termux plus llama.cpp Command-line experimentation and runtime control CLI directly; add a separate HTTP server for remote use Requires packages, compilation, file paths and memory tuning
USB/ADB APK installation, large model transfer and logs Not a chat endpoint by itself Requires Developer options, authorization and a data cable
Android Studio llama.cpp binding Building a custom Android application Whatever network interface your app implements More engineering work, with control over loading and token streaming
MLC LLM Android SDK Packaging a mobile-GPU application with explicit configuration Requires an app-level server that you implement or enable Model configuration includes path, model ID, estimated VRAM and context or prefill overrides

Choose the LAN app when the goal is simply to type on a computer. Choose Termux or a native SDK when you need control over model loading, formats, performance settings or application behavior. Use ADB alongside either route for setup and diagnostics.

How do memory, model size and speed affect the connection?

A network connection does not make the phone more powerful. The phone must hold the quantized model, its key-value cache, runtime buffers and Android overhead. Select a model that fits available RAM and, where applicable, GPU memory. MLC exposes estimated VRAM and context or prefill controls; llama.cpp exposes context settings that directly affect memory pressure.

  • Start with a smaller quantized model when the phone has limited memory.
  • Use a shorter context until the service is stable.
  • Close other memory-heavy apps before loading the model.
  • Keep the phone cool and connected to reliable power during long generations.
  • Expect speed to vary with the phone’s SoC, thermal state, quantization, context length and runtime.

There is no single cross-device tokens-per-second figure that applies to every Android phone and model. Treat any speed estimate as a measurement for a specific device, model, context and thermal condition, not as a guarantee for your setup.

What are the native Android runtime choices?

llama.cpp Android binding

The Android Studio binding parses GGUF metadata, loads the model through the inference engine and streams generated tokens. It is appropriate when you are writing an Android application and want llama.cpp behavior inside your own UI or service.

MLC LLM

MLC LLM supplies an Android SDK and packaging flow. Its model configuration can specify a model path, model ID, estimated VRAM, optional bundled weights and context or prefill overrides. A physical phone is required for meaningful mobile-GPU acceleration testing; an emulator should not be treated as a representative performance target.

Google’s Android inference stack

Google’s MediaPipe LLM Inference page describes fully on-device Android inference but marks that API maintenance-only and recommends LiteRT-LM for new Android work. For a new project, check the current maintenance status and migration guidance before committing to MediaPipe-specific code.

How do I troubleshoot a computer that cannot reach the phone?

The browser says the page cannot be reached

  • Confirm both devices are on the same private network, not merely networks with similar names.
  • Check that the LAN server is still running and that the model remains loaded.
  • Copy the exact IP address and port shown by the app. Do not reuse an old address; phones can receive a different private IP after reconnecting.
  • Type the correct path: /ui for the browser and the app’s documented /v1 base for API clients.
  • Temporarily disable client isolation, restrictive firewall rules or a VPN that blocks local traffic, then restore the protection that you still need.
  • Prevent Android battery restrictions from stopping the app in the background. Some devices suspend network services when the screen is locked or the app is idle.

The page opens but generation fails

  • Test with a short prompt to separate server connectivity from model-memory problems.
  • Verify that the model finished loading and that the selected model identifier matches the API request.
  • Lower the context size and close other apps if the process exits or Android reports low memory.
  • Check the app’s authentication setting. A web password does not necessarily describe the API authentication header.

ADB shows no device

  • Use a known-good USB-C data cable; charge-only cables cannot carry ADB traffic.
  • Reconnect the cable and accept the USB-debugging authorization dialog on the phone.
  • Install or update Android SDK Platform-Tools and run adb devices again.
  • On a computer that requires it, fix USB permissions or drivers before repeating the command.

Termux closes during loading

Reduce the context size, choose a smaller quantized model, close background apps and keep the model in the Termux home directory. A termination during generation usually indicates memory pressure rather than a Wi-Fi problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I secure a phone-hosted model server?

Keep the listener on the private network and use the app’s password protection. Do not port-forward the phone’s server directly to the public internet, and do not assume that an obscure port is security. Anyone who can reach an unauthenticated endpoint may be able to submit prompts, consume battery and memory, or inspect generated content.

  • Use a strong password meeting the app’s minimum; Pocket LLM documents eight characters or more for its web UI.
  • Stop the server when you are not using it.
  • Use a firewall or a private, authenticated tunnel if you need access from outside the home LAN.
  • Review the client list and router settings when using shared or guest networks.
  • Avoid sending confidential prompts until you understand where the app stores conversations and logs.

What is a reliable first-session checklist?

  1. Install the Android app or runtime and download a model that fits the phone.
  2. Connect phone and computer to the same private Wi-Fi.
  3. Load the model and wait for the ready state.
  4. Set the web password and start the LAN server.
  5. Open the displayed /ui address and send a short test prompt.
  6. Record the displayed host, port and model ID for the client you plan to use.
  7. Test the /v1 endpoint with a small request before configuring a larger application.
  8. If the service is unstable, lower context and model size before changing network settings.
  9. Stop the server and disable unnecessary background permissions when finished.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a cloud API key to use the phone’s local model?

No cloud account is inherently required for a LAN-only endpoint because inference happens on the phone. A particular desktop client may still require a value in its API-key field, so follow the phone server’s authentication instructions rather than assuming a provider key is valid.

Can more than one computer connect to the same Android server?

The LAN-server design is intended to expose the selected model to another device on the same private network, so additional devices can generally reach the displayed address if the app and router permit it. Each connected client shares the phone’s memory, compute capacity and server limits.

Why does my phone’s address change after I reconnect to Wi-Fi?

Most home routers assign private addresses dynamically. If the phone reconnects, reboots or changes networks, it may receive a different address; always copy the current host and port from the running app instead of bookmarking an old URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is port-forwarding a phone LLM server safe?

Direct port-forwarding exposes the service beyond your private network and is not recommended for an unauthenticated model endpoint. For remote access, use a properly authenticated private tunnel or VPN and retain the server’s password and firewall controls.
