To connect Spotify in ChatGPT, start a chat and mention Spotify, or open ChatGPT’s app directory and select Spotify if it is available. Choose Connect, sign in to the Spotify account you want to use, review the authorization screen, and approve the requested access. After that, you can ask for songs, artists, albums, playlists, podcast episodes, or recommendations. The connection is optional: you can disconnect it later, and changing ChatGPT’s app-permission setting is separate from revoking Spotify’s authorization.
Menu names and availability can differ by plan, country, account, workspace, model, and ChatGPT interface. The same Spotify account can also be used with other assistants, but each assistant has its own connection and permission controls.

The quickest method is to mention Spotify in a new conversation. If ChatGPT supports the Spotify app for your account, it will prompt you to connect it. You can also add it from the app area in Settings or from the plus/More menu, depending on the interface you see.
- Open ChatGPT and start a new conversation. Use the account and workspace where you intend to use Spotify.
- Invoke Spotify. Type “Spotify” in your prompt, select Spotify from the plus or More menu, or open Settings > Apps (called Plugins in some older interfaces) and choose Spotify. Labels can vary by account and rollout.
- Select Connect. ChatGPT will send you to Spotify’s sign-in and authorization page.
- Sign in to the intended Spotify account. Check the username or account identity before continuing. If a browser is already signed in to another account, log out or use a private window so you do not authorize the wrong profile.
- Read the authorization screen. Review every service and permission listed by Spotify. Approve only if the requested access matches what you expect.
- Return to ChatGPT and invoke Spotify again. Mention Spotify in your request, select it from the app picker, or use the supported app surface. The first successful connection normally remains available for later chats until you disconnect or reconnect it.
Spotify described the ChatGPT connection as opt-in in its October 6, 2025 announcement: you can connect or disconnect it at any time. A connection does not silently authorize every Spotify account you own; it applies to the account you selected during the provider sign-in flow.

What should I type after connecting?
Use a request that states the result you want and any constraints. For example:
- “Spotify, recommend mellow instrumental music for reading.”
- “Find albums by [artist] released in the 1990s on Spotify.”
- “Suggest a 30-minute playlist for a high-energy workout.”
- “Show podcast episodes about home networking from the last year.”
If ChatGPT does not recognize Spotify, explicitly select it from the app picker rather than relying on a natural-language mention. A workspace administrator, account role, model, or regional rollout can prevent the app from appearing.

What can the Spotify integration do?
Spotify says the ChatGPT integration can surface songs, artists, albums, playlists, and podcast episodes, and can produce recommendations from a mood, theme, or topic. The result may be a set of suggestions or a Spotify destination rather than a new playlist saved automatically to your library, so ask for the action you want and watch for a confirmation or open-in-Spotify control.
Recommendations from a prompt
Describe the listener, context, and boundaries instead of only naming a genre. “Acoustic songs for a quiet dinner, no explicit lyrics, under four minutes” gives the assistant more useful criteria than “make a playlist.” You can refine the result in the same conversation by asking for fewer tracks, a different era, or a different energy level.
Free and Premium behavior
Spotify reports that Free users can draw from catalog playlists such as Discover Weekly and New Music Friday. Premium users can turn more elaborate prompts into a fresh personalized selection. The exact controls and output can change by market and account, so a Free account may not expose every personalization or playback option shown in examples for Premium listeners.
Does ChatGPT play music?
The documented ChatGPT capability focuses on finding Spotify content and generating recommendations. Whether a result opens directly in Spotify, presents a preview, or offers another hand-off depends on the current app surface and account. Do not assume that a recommendation has started playback or been saved until Spotify shows that state.

What permissions does Spotify need in ChatGPT?
There are two separate permission layers. Spotify’s own authorization screen grants access to the selected Spotify account. ChatGPT’s app-permission control governs how the assistant may use an already-authorized connection. The second layer does not create a new Spotify authorization.

What should I check on Spotify’s consent screen?
- Account identity: Confirm the displayed Spotify profile is the one containing the playlists, listening history, or Premium status you expect.
- Requested services: Read each item instead of approving reflexively. If a request appears unrelated to the feature you intend to use, stop and investigate before continuing.
- Scope and purpose: Consider whether you need recommendations only, or whether you also want actions such as saving results or opening them in Spotify where supported.
- Workspace context: On a managed ChatGPT workspace, an administrator may restrict connected apps or require approval.
OpenAI advises choosing the account that already contains the information you need and reviewing permissions before approval. If you authorize the wrong account, reconnecting is usually safer than trying to work around mixed profiles.
How do ChatGPT’s app-permission modes work?
ChatGPT can offer several permission modes for a connected app. The labels and available choices depend on the account and app, but OpenAI lists four common levels:
- Always ask: ChatGPT requests confirmation whenever it wants to use the connection.
- Allow read actions: It can retrieve permitted information without asking each time, while actions that change data still require approval or may be blocked.
- Allow low-risk actions: It can perform a defined set of lower-risk operations automatically; higher-risk operations can still require confirmation.
- Allow all actions: Available only for eligible connections, this gives the broadest automation scope and can still be limited by policy or a required confirmation.
These modes are convenience and confirmation controls, not substitutes for Spotify’s consent screen. OpenAI explicitly states that app permissions do not grant an app new access. A more permissive ChatGPT setting therefore cannot add Spotify capabilities that were not authorized by Spotify, and a restrictive setting cannot by itself revoke the provider connection.

Use Always ask when you are testing the integration, sharing a workspace, or unsure what an action will do. Allow read actions is a practical compromise for discovering music while keeping changes to saved content behind a confirmation. Use broader modes only when you understand the actions the app supports and trust the account and workspace in which it runs.
Higher-risk actions may still trigger a confirmation prompt or be denied even under a broad setting. Workspace policies can override personal preferences, so a missing option is not necessarily a software failure.

How do I change the connected Spotify account?
Use the connection’s settings rather than authorizing a second account in the same chat.
- Open ChatGPT Settings.
- Choose Apps or Plugins, then select Spotify.
- Open the connected account’s settings or its more-options menu.
- Select Reconnect if that option is shown.
- Complete Spotify’s sign-in flow with the account you actually want, and review any newly requested permissions.
- Return to ChatGPT and test with a request that depends on the selected account, such as asking for one of its known playlists.
Reconnect is useful when a browser session keeps selecting an old account, when your Premium status changed, or when Spotify requests updated permissions. If Reconnect is unavailable, disconnect the existing connection first and then connect again.

How do I disconnect Spotify from ChatGPT?
Disconnecting stops future use of that connected account by ChatGPT, but it is not the same as deleting your ChatGPT data.
- Open Settings in ChatGPT.
- Select Apps or Plugins.
- Choose Spotify and open the connected account’s settings or more-options menu.
- Select Disconnect and confirm if prompted.
OpenAI says disconnecting one account leaves other connected accounts active. It also does not automatically delete existing conversations, saved files, or memories. If you need those records removed, use the separate deletion controls for the relevant conversation, memory, file, or account.
For a complete revocation, check Spotify’s own account-management controls as well. ChatGPT’s disconnect action ends the assistant-side connection; Spotify’s provider-side account controls determine whether previously granted third-party authorization remains listed there.
How does Spotify in ChatGPT compare with Spotify in Claude?
Both integrations connect an assistant to Spotify, but the published feature descriptions differ. Spotify’s ChatGPT announcement emphasizes discovery and recommendations; its Claude announcement describes a wider set of listener actions, including previews, saving results, playback in Claude, opening results in Spotify, and Spotify Connect device switching.

These are not interchangeable permissions. Authorizing Spotify in one assistant does not automatically authorize it in the other, and disconnecting one does not disconnect the other.

Availability is conditional, so first determine whether the issue is account eligibility or a failed sign-in.
Spotify does not appear in the app list
- Check that you are using the intended ChatGPT plan, model, account role, and workspace.
- Confirm that the integration is available in your country and language.
- Ask a workspace administrator whether connected apps are restricted or require approval.
- Try a new conversation and the plus/More menu; an app may be available through one interface surface before another.
- Sign out and back in only after recording which Spotify account you intend to authorize.
The wrong Spotify account opens
Sign out of Spotify in the authorization browser session, then reconnect. A private browser window can prevent an existing cookie from silently selecting another profile. After reconnecting, test with account-specific content rather than a generic recommendation.
The consent flow fails or loops
- Cancel the flow and restart it from ChatGPT’s connected-app settings.
- Check whether your workspace requires administrator approval.
- Review whether the Spotify account has the required service or regional availability.
- Disable conflicting browser extensions temporarily, especially those that block pop-ups or cross-site redirects.
- If a new permission request appears, read it again instead of repeatedly approving an unexpected scope.
The app connects but does not perform an action
Confirm that the action is documented for your assistant and account. Read-only discovery may work while saving, playback, or device switching is unavailable. A ChatGPT app-permission mode, a workspace policy, or a confirmation requirement can also block an action that the provider supports in principle.
What should I do before granting access?
A short review prevents most account and privacy mistakes:
- Use the Spotify profile that contains the playlists and listening context you want the assistant to use.
- Read the provider authorization page and take a screenshot or note of unusual permissions before approving.
- Start with Always ask or Allow read actions while you learn the integration.
- Avoid connecting a personal Spotify account inside a shared workspace unless the workspace’s data policy permits it.
- Do not paste passwords, recovery codes, or payment details into a chat; authentication belongs on Spotify’s sign-in page.
- When finished, disconnect the app and separately remove chats, memories, or files if you want those records gone.
Spotify reported more than 2,000 compatible devices in its 2025 and 2026 announcements, but device compatibility does not mean every device can be controlled from every assistant. Treat device switching as an assistant- and account-specific feature.
Can ChatGPT create a Spotify playlist from a prompt?
It can generate a personalized selection from an elaborate prompt for eligible Premium users, while Free users can use catalog-based sources such as Discover Weekly and New Music Friday. Whether the result is saved as a playlist, shown as recommendations, or opened in Spotify depends on the current integration and the action you approve.
For the most predictable result, specify the mood, activity, language, era, artists to include or exclude, approximate duration, and whether explicit tracks are acceptable. Then confirm the final save or open action in Spotify rather than assuming that displaying a list changed your library.
