Connect one service at a time through the AI provider’s official connector, grant only the permissions needed for a specific task, and start by asking it to find or summarize something harmless. Don’t enable edits, messages, sharing, deletion, or purchases until you need them—and keep approval prompts on for those actions. A connector generally works with the access of the account you authorize, so choosing the right account and checking its permissions matters as much as the AI settings.
What can an AI connector do—and what can it access?
A connector links an AI assistant to a service such as cloud storage, email, a calendar, or a work application. Depending on the connector, the assistant may search or summarize information, or perform supported actions such as creating or editing content. The exact capabilities depend on the provider, connected service, permissions granted, account, plan, and interface.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConnecting a service does not necessarily mean the assistant can read or change everything in it. OpenAI says connected apps cannot access files the connected account itself cannot open. Anthropic says its connectors inherit a user’s permissions in the source service: someone who cannot access a file, channel, or record there cannot access it through Claude. Microsoft describes Copilot connectors as using source-service permissions rather than keeping a separate copy of connected data.
Those boundaries are useful, but they are not a substitute for limiting access. An authorized account may have broad access, and a custom connector using shared credentials may reach everything those credentials can reach. Also consider where retrieved information appears: Microsoft notes that responses containing connected data remain in conversation history until that history is deleted.

How do you decide what permissions to grant?
Start with the task, not the list of permissions on the consent screen. Identify the specific information the assistant needs and the actions it must take. Then grant the narrowest available access that can complete that task.
Separate the source, operation, and approver
- Source: Name the specific service and, where possible, the folder, calendar, repository, or project involved.
- Operation: Decide whether the task requires searching, reading, drafting, editing, sending, sharing, deleting, or another action. “Help with email” is too broad; “find messages about a meeting and summarize them” is clearer.
- Approver: Decide which person must review an action before it affects another person, changes access, or causes a consequential or destructive result.
OAuth guidance in RFC 6749 says a client “SHOULD request access tokens with the minimal scope necessary.” In practical terms, if a connector offers separate read and write permissions, don’t grant write access just to search or summarize. If it offers only broad access, weigh that limitation before connecting an account containing sensitive or unrelated material.

- Read access allows retrieval or searching of information the account can access.
- Write access may allow creating, editing, or deleting content, depending on the connector.
- External-action access may allow sending messages, sharing files, changing permissions, or taking other actions outside the assistant conversation.
These categories are a way to assess risk, not a promise that every provider presents them as separate switches. Review the actual consent screen and the provider’s connector settings. OpenAI’s app settings distinguish read access from lower- and higher-risk actions, with examples including sending messages; creating, editing, or deleting files; changing access settings; making purchases; and sharing sensitive information.
How do you connect an assistant without giving it too much access?
Use the provider’s official connector flow, authorize the account that already has the required access, and test a read-only task before enabling actions. The labels and available controls vary by provider and service, so follow the consent and settings screens shown for your account rather than assuming every interface is identical.

- Write down the task and its boundaries. Specify the service, the material needed, the operations allowed, and the actions that must wait for human approval.
- Choose an official connector. Prefer the AI provider’s built-in or documented connection route. If considering a custom connector, first establish who operates and hosts it, how it authenticates, and how it handles data. Anthropic warns that custom connectors may be unverified; connect only when you trust the operator and understand the access involved.
- Select the account with the intended access. Check the account shown during authorization. A personal account will not provide access to work-only files, and authorizing the wrong account can expose a different set of material than you intend. For Microsoft Copilot, personal Microsoft accounts must match the OneDrive or Outlook account used by Copilot. Google services require explicit account connection and consent.
- Read the consent screen before accepting. Note which service and account are being connected and what permissions or scopes are requested. If the permissions appear broader than the task requires, pause rather than treating consent as a routine click.
- Start with a harmless, read-only test. Ask the assistant to find or summarize a known, non-sensitive file. Confirm that it retrieves the expected material and does not make a change. Avoid using sensitive data as the first test.
- Check the access boundary. Ask for an item the account is allowed to access, then verify that an item outside the account’s access is not revealed. Do not treat a prompt telling the AI to refuse as a security boundary: the service itself must enforce access.
- Test actions as drafts first. If the task might send, edit, share, or delete something, ask for a proposed action or draft and inspect it without execution. Enable action permissions only if the task requires them, and retain a confirmation step before the action is carried out.
- Review the connection after setup. Check the provider’s connected-app or account controls and the source service’s authorized-app controls. Remove permissions that are not needed for the workflow.
Which safety controls matter most for ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot?
Across the three services, the shared starting point is source-account permissions: connect the right account and do not assume the assistant can access material the account cannot. Their documented details differ, and availability can depend on the account, provider, plan, region, workspace, administrator, or interface.
| Assistant | Documented permission or connection behavior | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Connected apps cannot access files the connected account cannot open. App settings distinguish read access from lower- and higher-risk actions; connected apps can search and summarize content and may take supported actions, sometimes with approval. | Review the account and requested permissions during authorization. In app settings, check read access and which actions require approval. |
| Claude | Connectors inherit each user’s permissions in the source service. A custom connector using a shared credential can reach whatever that credential can access. Remote MCP guidance describes OAuth-based permission grants and revocation by disconnecting in Claude or the third-party service. | Be especially cautious with shared credentials. Confirm who operates a custom connector and review the tool’s behavior and permissions. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Connectors use source-service permissions and do not store a separate copy of connected data. Responses containing connected data remain in conversation history until deleted. Personal Microsoft accounts must match the OneDrive or Outlook account used by Copilot; Google services require explicit connection and consent. | Verify the connected account and consider whether connected information in conversation history should be retained or deleted. |
This comparison describes the documented behaviors above, not a guarantee that every connector has the same controls or is available to every user. Before connecting a particular app, check the permission screen and account-specific settings you actually see.

When should you require approval before an AI takes action?
Keep a human confirmation step for actions that affect other people, change access, destroy information, or have financial consequences. Approval prompts reduce the chance that a mistaken interpretation or manipulated instruction turns into an external action.
- Messages and other external communication: Review the recipient, content, and attachments before sending.
- File changes: Inspect edits before saving, especially if they overwrite existing work or modify shared material.
- Sharing and permission changes: Verify who will gain access and to which resource.
- Deletion: Confirm the exact item and whether recovery is possible before authorizing removal.
- Purchases or other financial actions: Review the amount, recipient, and terms independently before confirmation.
OpenAI documents approval requirements for some connected-app actions, but support and prompts may vary. OWASP recommends splitting read and write operations and requiring approval for sensitive, destructive, or external actions. Microsoft’s AI identity guidance likewise recommends fresh approval for high-risk operations. Treat any available approval prompt as a meaningful checkpoint, not as a reason to grant unnecessary permissions.

How can documents or connector tools manipulate an AI?
Content retrieved from a file, email, web page, issue, or connector tool may contain instructions aimed at manipulating the assistant. A document could, for example, tell an AI to ignore its prior instructions or send information elsewhere. Treat retrieved content as data to assess, not as authority to grant access or perform an action.
Anthropic warns that malicious MCP servers may inject hidden instructions and that a tool’s behavior can change after approval. This is why trusting a connector requires more than recognizing its name: check its operator and the permissions it requests, and be alert to changes in behavior. Avoid unverified custom servers unless you can assess their operator, hosting, authentication, and data handling.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Prompts alone cannot enforce access control. OWASP’s guidance is to minimize what a model can access or do so that manipulation or mistakes have less opportunity to cause harm. Authorization should be enforced by the connected service or backend, not by an instruction such as “never show confidential files.” Narrow access, separate read and write abilities when possible, and require approval for consequential actions.
How should you handle connector credentials and tokens?
Use delegated, narrowly scoped authorization where available rather than putting a password or long-lived credential into a prompt. OAuth allows a user to grant specific permissions without giving the connector their password. If a workflow requires credentials for a custom tool, limit what they can access and how long they remain valid.

- Prefer short-lived, task-scoped tokens over credentials that remain valid indefinitely.
- Use a distinct agent identity where possible rather than sharing a person’s broad access.
- Separate read credentials or tools from write credentials or tools when supported.
- Never paste long-lived tokens into prompts, documents, or tool descriptions.
- For shared credentials, restrict the credential’s access to only the material and operations the workflow needs.
Microsoft recommends unique agent identities, scoped short-lived tokens, restricted tool permissions, and fresh approval for high-risk operations. These controls limit the damage if a credential is exposed or a tool is misused; they do not remove the need to review the connector itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you disconnect a connector and revoke its access?
Disconnect the account through the AI provider and, where available, remove the corresponding authorization from the source service as well. Disconnecting an app in one place may not revoke the provider-side authorization in the other, so check both sides rather than assuming a single switch ends access.
- In the AI assistant’s connected-app or connector settings, disconnect the service or account you no longer need.
- In the source service’s authorized-app or security controls, revoke the corresponding third-party access if it remains listed.
- Remove unused permissions or scopes and revoke or rotate credentials associated with custom tools.
- Review workspace or provider approvals if the connection was authorized by an administrator or used across a team.
- Delete conversation history containing connected data if you no longer want those responses retained there. Microsoft specifically notes that responses with connected data remain in conversation history until deleted.
Anthropic says remote MCP access can be revoked by disconnecting in Claude or in the third-party service. For sensitive workflows, verify the connection is gone from both the assistant and provider side, and do not leave dormant credentials active merely because the connector is no longer being used.
What should you do if a connector asks for broad access?
Pause and decide whether the task justifies that reach. If the assistant needs to summarize one folder but the connector requests broad access to an entire account, consider a narrower account or credential, a supported read-only option, or a smaller source scope. If none is available, the remaining choice is whether the broader access is acceptable for the information held in that account.
Best Value
- Check whether the request is for the correct service and account.
- Look for separate read and write controls or more narrowly scoped access.
- For custom integrations, ask whether a dedicated identity or restricted credential can be used.
- Decline the connection if you cannot identify the operator or understand why the requested access is needed.
Do not rely on the assistant promising not to use permissions it has already been granted. The safer boundary is a permission the service enforces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI assistant read files I haven’t shared with my account?
The documented connectors described here inherit the access of the connected source account; they are not supposed to make an inaccessible file readable just because an assistant asks for it. If a file is unexpectedly exposed, disconnect the connector and review the source service’s access settings and authorized apps.
Does disconnecting an AI app delete information it already summarized?
Disconnecting stops the connection’s future access but does not necessarily erase information already present in chat history. Check the assistant’s conversation deletion controls and the source provider’s data-handling terms for the relevant account and service.
Is a custom MCP connector safe if it uses OAuth?
OAuth avoids handing the connector your password and can grant specific permissions, but it does not establish that the server operator is trustworthy or that its behavior will remain unchanged. Assess the operator and requested access, and keep approval requirements for consequential actions.
Should I connect my work account or my personal account?
Use the account that already has access to the material needed for the task, while accounting for everything else that account can access. For Microsoft Copilot, the personal Microsoft account needs to match the OneDrive or Outlook account used by Copilot; Google services require explicit connection and consent.
