Connect the assistant to a governed middleware service or MCP/tool server, not directly to the database. The assistant turns a request into a structured tool call or SQL proposal; your application validates it, binds parameters, applies authorization and tenant filters, and sends it through the database’s normal driver. The database still parses, optimizes, authorizes, and executes the query. Return bounded results together with query metadata so the assistant can explain the answer and its provenance. This design supports natural-language questions while keeping credentials, permissions, policy enforcement, and execution outside the model.
What does it mean to connect an AI assistant without replacing the query engine?
An AI assistant is an intent interpreter and coordinator. A relational database remains the system that understands SQL, chooses an execution plan, enforces database permissions, and reads or changes data. The connection is therefore an application workflow, not a replacement database engine.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe assistant may produce a reviewed function call such as find_customer_orders, or propose a SQL statement for a narrowly controlled read-only service. Middleware then decides whether that request is allowed and executes it with the vendor’s client library. The model never needs a connection string or unrestricted network access to the database.
The request path
- The user asks a question in natural language.
- The model receives a small tool catalog and relevant schema descriptions.
- The model emits a tool call with structured arguments, or a SQL proposal and parameter values.
- Application code validates the tool name, argument types, policy, tenant scope, and statement type.
- The service binds values as parameters and sends the request through the normal database driver.
- The database performs its ordinary parsing, optimization, authorization, and execution.
- Middleware limits and redacts the returned data, then sends rows, aggregates, errors, and execution metadata back to the model.
- The model writes the user-facing explanation, while your logs preserve the call and database trace for review.
What architecture should sit between the assistant and the database?
Use four layers with clear ownership. This separation prevents a prompt from becoming a database credential, a permission grant, or an execution engine.

| Layer | Responsibility | What it must not do |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant and tool schema | Interpret intent and select a narrow operation, such as schema discovery, an order lookup, or a read-only report. | Hold database passwords, decide tenant identity, or grant itself new tools. |
| Middleware validation | Allowlist tools, validate JSON arguments, bind parameters, enforce policy, apply tenant filters, and reject prohibited SQL. | Trust model text as an authorization decision. |
| Native database client | Use the vendor driver and an appropriately restricted database role to execute the approved request. | Accept unvalidated model-generated text as an administrative command. |
| Result and trace handling | Bound rows, redact sensitive fields, return useful metadata, and record an execution identifier. | Send unrestricted tables, secrets, or credentials back to the model. |
OpenAI’s documented function-calling flow describes this as a multi-step conversation between the application and the model: the application sends tools, receives a call, executes its own code, returns tool output, and requests the final response. The important boundary is that your code, not the model, owns database execution.

| Restricted text-to-SQL middleware | Highest; supports questions not represented by a fixed catalog. | Requires statement parsing, allowlists, read-only roles, parameter checks, and extensive testing. | Less endpoint work, more validation and monitoring. | Must be enforced outside the prompt and outside generated SQL assumptions. | Exploratory analytics where novel queries matter. |
| Predefined functions or semantic aliases | Limited to reviewed operations and their parameters. | Strong determinism, least-privilege roles, and straightforward auditing. | Requires maintaining the operation catalog as business questions change. | Each function can require tenant identity and apply a fixed filter. | Recurring, high-value questions and production workflows. |
| Governed SQL MCP or tool server | Depends on the server’s configured tools; can expose either aliases or carefully controlled SQL operations. | Centralizes tool definitions, policy, and execution routing. | One governed service to operate, with configuration and schema upkeep. | Safer when tools are custom and tenant-scoped rather than an unrestricted execute_sql. |

Restricted text-to-SQL middleware
Provide a compact schema summary, then ask the model for SQL plus parameter values. The service should parse the statement, reject DDL and DML in read-only mode, bind every value, apply a read-only database role, and cap execution and result size. This is the most adaptable option, but arbitrary SQL creates the largest prompt-injection and validation surface. OpenAI’s SQL guidance presents this trade-off: flexible middleware can forward SQL to a database, but should use read-only permissions when arbitrary generated SQL is accepted.
Predefined functions and semantic aliases
Expose operations such as find_customer_orders(customer_id, date_from, date_to) or monthly_revenue(region, month). Each operation maps to a reviewed, parameterized SELECT statement and runs under a least-privilege role. EDB’s Postgres AI examples use read-only schema-search and query tools and reviewed semantic aliases, which makes the model choose among known operations instead of regenerating business logic for every request.
Governed MCP or tool servers
A governed server keeps the model’s reasoning separate from execution. Azure SQL’s SQL MCP Server is an example of routing access through defined tools. Google Cloud guidance recommends static allowlists, action-selector patterns, and custom tools when unrestricted SQL execution could reveal another tenant’s rows. MCP is a transport and tool interface; it does not make an unsafe query safe by itself. The server still needs the same authorization, parameter, and logging controls as any other middleware.
How do you build the connection step by step?
Start with a read-only use case and a narrow result contract. Add flexibility only after policy, traces, and recovery behavior are working.

- Choose one user outcome. Define the question the first tool answers, its required inputs, maximum result size, and fields that may be returned. Avoid beginning with a general-purpose database console.
- Create a service identity. Store connection secrets in your application’s secret manager, not in system prompts, tool descriptions, or conversation state. Give the database role only the schemas, tables, views, and operations required for the first tool.
- Publish a compact schema description. Include table and column meanings, relationships, allowed filters, units, and known business definitions. Do not expose every internal table simply because the model can read metadata.
- Define the tool contract. Specify the exact tool name, argument types, required fields, enumerated values, and output shape. A function should describe an action the service can enforce, not an instruction such as “do anything the user asks.”
- Validate before execution. Check that the tool is allowlisted, arguments conform to the schema, dates and identifiers are valid, and requested fields are permitted. For SQL proposals, parse the statement and reject prohibited verbs, multiple statements, comments used to bypass checks, and references outside the allowlist.
- Bind all values. Pass user-supplied values through driver parameters. Never concatenate a name, identifier, date, sort direction, or limit into SQL text. If a database driver cannot parameterize an identifier, map the user’s choice to a server-side allowlist instead.
- Apply identity and tenant policy. Obtain the authenticated user, role, and tenant from the session or gateway. Add the tenant predicate or invoke a tenant-scoped function in middleware; do not ask the model to remember which tenant it may access.
- Execute through the native driver. Use the database’s normal connection pool, transaction behavior, timeouts, and cancellation facilities. The database should remain responsible for planning and enforcing its permissions.
- Shape the result. Enforce row and byte limits, redact secrets and unnecessary personal data, and return aggregates when full rows are not needed. Include an execution identifier, source operation, row count, and any truncation indicator.
- Complete the model loop. Send the tool result to the model as tool output. The assistant can then explain the result, state assumptions, and identify that a response was limited or filtered.
- Record a reproducible trace. Log the authenticated principal, tenant, tool name, validated arguments, redacted SQL, permission context, latency, row count, and database execution identifier. Protect logs as carefully as the data they describe.
- Test failure paths. Exercise malformed arguments, an unauthorized table, a cross-tenant identifier, an oversized result, a timeout, a database error, and a prompt that tries to redefine the tool. Confirm that each case fails closed and produces a useful, non-sensitive message.
An illustrative tool contract
A contract can be as explicit as the following (the exact syntax depends on your model API):
{ "name": "find_customer_orders", "arguments": { "customer_id": "string", "date_from": "ISO date", "date_to": "ISO date", "limit": "integer, maximum 100" } }
The model may request a customer and date range, but middleware should still verify that the customer belongs to the authenticated tenant, clamp the limit, and use a parameterized statement. The contract is an interface; it is not a substitute for server-side checks.
How does the assistant-to-database conversation work?
The model normally does not receive rows in the first response. It receives the available tools and decides whether one is appropriate. Your application executes the call and sends a second message containing the tool output, after which the model produces the natural-language answer.
Tool call versus SQL proposal
A tool call has a stable name and typed arguments, so the application can route it without interpreting free-form prose. A SQL proposal is more flexible, but it must be treated as untrusted input until a SQL parser, policy engine, and database role approve it. In both cases, the model’s explanation is downstream of the actual database result; it is not evidence that the query was correct.
What to return to the model
- The rows or aggregate values needed to answer the question.
- A clear indication when results were truncated, filtered, or empty.
- The operation name and execution identifier for provenance.
- Relevant assumptions, such as a date range or timezone selected by the application.
- A safe error category, without passwords, internal stack traces, or unredacted sensitive values.
How do you secure an AI database connection?
Security comes from ordinary application and database controls applied at the model boundary. Prompts and retrieved documents are inputs, not authorization systems.
Use least privilege and read-only defaults
Start with a role that can execute only approved reads. Microsoft Fabric’s Ask mode is read-only by default, and write-capable modes require explicit permissions or approval. Microsoft also documents that Copilot in SQL Server Management Studio runs under the connected user’s permissions and does not elevate them; your own middleware should preserve the same principle.

Keep policy outside the prompt
Google Cloud’s security guidance says to treat end-user input and data fetched from external sources as untrusted. A sentence in a system prompt cannot reliably stop a retrieved document from asking the model to reveal another customer’s rows. Keep table, column, operation, and tenant allowlists in application code or a policy service, then enforce them before the driver is called.
Parameterize and inspect statements
Microsoft’s database-agent tutorial requires parameterized values and checks generated SQL for prohibited content. Apply both controls: bind every value through the driver, and inspect the resulting statement or abstract syntax tree for disallowed verbs, schemas, functions, and multiple statements. A read-only role limits damage if validation misses something, but it does not prevent confidential reads.
Recommended Free Tools
Isolate tenants from model decisions
Derive tenant identity from the authenticated session, token, or gateway. Pass it to a tenant-scoped function or add it as a server-side predicate. Never let the model choose a tenant ID merely because a user included one in a prompt. Google Cloud specifically warns that prompt instructions alone are insufficient for multi-tenant isolation.
Protect returned data
Limit rows, columns, and bytes before sending anything to the model. Redact credentials, access tokens, payment details, and fields that are not needed for the answer. A model does not need unrestricted row access to summarize a count or total.
How should production systems handle writes?
Keep DML and DDL disabled for the default assistant path. A write workflow should be a separate tool with a separate permission, an explicit confirmation step, and an audit record of who approved the exact statement or change preview.
For an exceptional write, show the affected records or a safe summary, identify the operation and tenant, require confirmation from an authorized user, and execute through a role that cannot perform unrelated writes. Record the approver, timestamp, parameters, and resulting transaction identifier. Microsoft Fabric’s write-permission model and SSMS’s non-elevation behavior illustrate why write access must be explicit rather than inferred from a conversational request.

How do you improve query correctness?
A syntactically valid query can still answer the wrong business question. Firebase SQL Connect documentation warns that AI-generated schemas, operations, seed data, and code must be validated before production use; Microsoft likewise notes that generated queries may not be completely accurate.
Give the model useful metadata
Describe relationships, units, null behavior, status meanings, and time zones, not just column names. Mark sensitive columns and identify the approved source for each metric. If two tables contain similarly named fields, explain which one represents the business concept the tool exposes.
Add a dry run or plan check
Where the database supports it, run an explain or dry-run step before execution. Compare referenced schemas, estimated scope, and policy flags with the request. Reject a query that scans an unapproved table, omits a required tenant predicate, or exceeds a configured cost or row limit.
Promote recurring questions to reviewed operations
When a question is high-value or repeated, replace regenerated SQL with a reviewed alias or stored operation. The model then selects a known query and supplies parameters, reducing semantic drift and making changes reviewable. EDB’s semantic-alias approach is designed for this deterministic layer.
Return assumptions and provenance
Include the source operation, filters, execution time, row count, and any aggregation definition in tool output. The assistant can state what it actually ran instead of implying that it inspected the entire database. Keep the exact or redacted SQL in the operator trace so an engineer can reproduce a disputed answer.
What are the common failure modes and fixes?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The assistant invents a table or column. | Schema context is incomplete or stale. | Refresh approved metadata, include relationships and definitions, and reject unknown identifiers before execution. |
| A request returns another tenant’s rows. | Tenant scope was left to prompt instructions or model-generated SQL. | Derive tenant identity from authentication and enforce it in a server-side function or predicate. |
| The model asks to drop or update data. | Unrestricted SQL or an overly broad tool was exposed. | Disable DDL/DML in the default role, allowlist statement types, and create a separately approved write workflow. |
| Results are too large or reveal secrets. | No output shaping or field policy. | Apply column, row, byte, and time limits; redact before the model receives the result. |
| The answer sounds plausible but is wrong. | Ambiguous business definitions, incorrect joins, or generated SQL semantics. | Add schema descriptions, dry-run checks, reviewed aliases, and traces that expose assumptions and source tables. |
| An error exposes infrastructure details. | Raw database exceptions were passed through. | Map errors to safe categories for the model and retain full diagnostics only in protected logs. |
| A prompt or document changes the assistant’s rules. | Untrusted content was treated as an instruction. | Keep tool and permission policy in code, delimit retrieved content, and validate every call independently. |
How do vendor examples map to this design?
Product documentation illustrates the same separation even when the names differ:
Best Value
- OpenAI API: Function calling supplies the model-to-application loop; the application remains responsible for database execution.
- Azure SQL: SQL MCP Server provides a governed interface that routes access through configured tools.
- Google Cloud SQL: Security guidance covers static allowlists, custom tools, action selectors, and tenant isolation for agents.
- Firebase SQL Connect: AI assistance can generate schemas, GraphQL operations, seed data, and typed SDKs, with MCP support for development workflows; generated output must be validated before production.
- EDB Postgres AI Database: Read-only semantic tools and reviewed aliases provide a deterministic layer over PostgreSQL.
These examples are implementation choices, not a reason to bypass the database driver. In every case, the durable controls are the same: least privilege, server-side validation, tenant enforcement, bounded results, and an auditable execution trace.
Is connecting an assistant this way actually replacing the database engine?
No. The assistant replaces only the manual translation from a natural-language request to an approved operation. The database still performs parsing, optimization, authorization, concurrency and transaction handling, and execution. A well-designed middleware layer makes that boundary visible: the model proposes intent, application code enforces policy, and the database remains the authoritative query engine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need MCP to let an AI assistant query SQL?
No. A conventional application service that exposes function-calling tools can implement the same boundary. MCP is useful when you want a standard, governed tool interface shared by multiple assistants, but it does not remove the need for authorization, parameter binding, tenant checks, and logging.
What database permissions should the assistant’s service account have?
Begin with a dedicated read-only role limited to approved schemas, views, and functions. Do not reuse an administrator credential or grant broad table access merely to simplify schema discovery; add a separately controlled role only for an explicitly approved write workflow.
Should the assistant receive the full SQL statement in its answer?
Return enough metadata to explain the operation and its filters, but redact identifiers or literals that could expose secrets or personal data. Keep the exact statement, bound parameters, and execution identifier in protected operator logs so an authorized person can reproduce the call.
What happens when the database schema changes?
A tool contract or semantic alias can fail safely when a referenced object disappears, provided middleware validates identifiers and reports a typed error. Treat schema changes as interface changes: update metadata and reviewed operations, run regression tests for common questions, and deploy the assistant-facing change only after the database migration is complete.
