Connect the television’s HDMI ARC or eARC socket to the TV/eARC port on the KEF LS60 Wireless Primary Speaker, select the TV source, enable HDMI-CEC, and set the television and streaming apps to PCM. That combination is KEF’s preferred setup and avoids the most common silent-output problem: televisions often default to Dolby Digital, which can produce no sound through the LS60.

If HDMI will not establish a connection, use a TOSLINK optical cable to the LS60 optical input and keep the TV output on PCM. For picture-and-sound timing problems, adjust the television’s lip-sync or video-delay control; avoid Bluetooth for TV viewing because codec delay is inherent. The sections below give the exact wiring, settings, LED meanings, and recovery sequence for each failure mode.

What do I need before connecting the TV?

You need the LS60 Wireless pair powered on, the KEF Connect app available for support or connection testing if required, and one of the following cable paths:

  • Preferred: an HDMI cable from the TV’s socket labeled ARC or eARC to the TV/eARC input on the LS60 Wireless Primary Speaker.
  • Fallback: a TOSLINK optical cable from the television’s optical audio output to the LS60 optical input.

Only the Primary Speaker receives the television cable. The other speaker remains connected as the LS60 stereo partner. Confirm that both speakers have power, neither is muted, and the speaker set you intend to use is selected before troubleshooting the TV connection.

Television menus differ by manufacturer. Look for settings named HDMI-CEC, ARC, eARC, Digital audio output, Audio format, Lip sync, or Video delay. CEC can have a manufacturer-specific name; for example, some televisions call it Anynet+ or Simplink.

How do I connect the TV to the LS60 with HDMI ARC or eARC?

HDMI ARC/eARC is the primary path because it carries the TV-audio handshake and allows compatible TV control through HDMI-CEC. Follow this order so the television and speakers negotiate the connection cleanly.

  1. Find the correct TV socket. Use the HDMI port specifically labeled ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input may carry picture into the TV but will not return television sound to the speakers.
  2. Connect the LS60. Plug the other end into the TV/eARC port on the LS60 Wireless Primary Speaker. The LS60 manual labels this speaker input as the eARC input, even when your television calls its socket ARC.
  3. Seat both ends firmly. Push the plugs fully into their sockets. A partially inserted plug can leave the television visible to the speakers but prevent audio from passing.
  4. Turn on HDMI-CEC. In the television’s settings, enable HDMI-CEC. The label varies by brand; names such as Anynet+ and Simplink refer to the same general control system.
  5. Select the TV source on the LS60. Use the LS60 remote or control in the KEF system to choose the TV input rather than another source.
  6. Set digital audio to PCM. In the TV’s sound menu, choose PCM for digital or HDMI audio output. Also inspect the audio-format option inside each streaming app you use, because an app can select Dolby Digital independently of the television’s global setting.
  7. Play a known-good source. Start a broadcast or app program, raise the LS60 volume, and verify that the TV is not muted. If the primary LED indicates a connection problem, use the decision sequence below instead of repeatedly changing unrelated sound settings.

When ARC/eARC is working, the LS60 should switch to TV mode and the television can usually send volume commands through CEC. Exact remote behavior depends on the TV’s CEC implementation; the essential requirement is that CEC and ARC/eARC are both enabled.

Should the TV use PCM or Dolby Digital?

Choose PCM first. KEF identifies PCM as the safest documented format for HDMI troubleshooting and for optical playback, while Dolby Digital is often the television default that results in silence through the LS60.

PCM and Dolby Digital are not interchangeable labels for the same setting. PCM asks the TV or app to send uncompressed audio that the LS60 can accept directly. Dolby Digital sends an encoded stream; if the television, app, or current connection does not complete the expected handshake, the speakers may remain silent even though everything appears connected.

Set PCM at both levels

  • Television level: open the TV’s digital-audio-output or HDMI-audio menu and select PCM.
  • App level: open the sound or playback options in the streaming app and choose PCM or the app’s stereo/compatible option when available. Apps such as Netflix or Disney+ can expose their own audio choice.

After changing the format, stop and restart playback. If the TV still reports an external audio device but no sound comes out, continue with the cable and power-cycle checks rather than switching back to Dolby Digital.

Why is there no sound through HDMI ARC or eARC?

Use the LED state to identify whether the problem is a missing HDMI connection, a partial CEC connection, or an audio-format failure. Work through the following branches in order.

A blinking light-blue primary LED means no HDMI connection

A blinking light-blue LED indicates that the LS60 has not found the TV connection. Confirm that the cable is in the television’s ARC/eARC socket, not an ordinary HDMI socket, and that the plug is fully seated at both ends. If the TV has several HDMI ports, move the cable to the one explicitly marked ARC or eARC and select the TV source again.

A pulsing light-blue LED means CEC is present but ARC is not

A pulsing light-blue LED indicates that control signaling is present but the audio-return channel has not been established. Reopen the television settings and turn HDMI-CEC on, then retry the connection. If CEC was already enabled, switch it off, restart the TV, enable it again, and select the LS60 TV source after the television has finished booting.

The connection appears active but the speakers remain silent

  1. Set the TV digital-audio output to PCM.
  2. Set the streaming app’s audio option to PCM or its compatible stereo setting.
  3. Replace the HDMI cable with another known-good cable and repeat the ARC/eARC connection.
  4. Power-cycle the television: unplug its power cable, wait about 10–15 seconds, plug it back in, and retry playback.

KEF documents optical as the fallback when HDMI still fails. If optical also produces no sound, verify PCM again and try another optical cable before returning to HDMI.

What do the LS60 Wireless TV LEDs mean?

The Primary Speaker’s light-blue LED gives a quick status indication for the TV input:

LED state Meaning Next action
Solid light blue TV mode is active Check the TV’s PCM setting, app audio setting, mute state, and volume if no sound is heard.
Pulsing light blue Connecting to a TV; CEC is present but ARC may not be established Enable or re-enable HDMI-CEC, confirm the ARC/eARC port, and retry.
Blinking light blue No TV connection found Reseat the cable, verify the TV’s ARC/eARC socket, and replace the cable if necessary.

The LED describes the connection state, not whether the television is currently playing a program. A solid light-blue indicator with silence therefore points you toward audio format, mute, source, or volume checks rather than cable detection.

Can I use optical instead of HDMI?

Yes. Optical is KEF’s documented fallback when HDMI ARC/eARC cannot be established. Connect a TOSLINK cable from the TV’s optical output to the LS60 optical input, select the optical source on the speakers, and leave the television’s digital-audio output set to PCM.

Optical setup

  1. Remove the protective caps from both ends of the TOSLINK cable, if present.
  2. Insert one end into the TV’s optical audio-out socket and the other into the LS60 optical input on the Primary Speaker.
  3. Select the optical input on the LS60.
  4. Set the television’s digital output to PCM and begin playback.

If there is no optical sound, confirm that PCM is still selected, try another optical cable, and check that the TV is sending audio rather than only routing sound to its internal speakers. If optical works but HDMI does not, you can continue using optical while replacing the HDMI cable or investigating the television’s ARC settings.

What is the difference between HDMI ARC/eARC and optical?

Both connections can deliver TV audio to the LS60, but they behave differently during setup and control.

Consideration HDMI ARC/eARC TOSLINK optical
Role in KEF’s instructions Preferred primary TV path Documented fallback when HDMI fails
TV control through CEC Supports the HDMI-CEC handshake when the TV has CEC enabled Does not provide HDMI-CEC control signaling
Audio handshake Uses the ARC/eARC return-channel handshake between the TV and LS60 Uses a direct optical audio feed without that HDMI handshake
Setup complexity Requires the correct ARC/eARC socket, CEC, source selection, and PCM Requires the optical sockets, optical source selection, and PCM
Common failure points Wrong HDMI port, loose or defective cable, disabled CEC, or failed ARC negotiation Wrong optical source, damaged cable, or a TV output format other than PCM
Best use Normal installation when ARC/eARC works and TV control is useful Practical recovery path when HDMI cannot be made reliable

The television must expose a usable PCM output for either troubleshooting path. Optical avoids HDMI’s ARC handshake, but it also gives up HDMI-CEC control and the associated TV-control behavior.

How do I fix TV picture and sound being out of sync?

Open the television’s audio menu and adjust its video-delay, audio-delay, or lip-sync control until speech matches the actors’ mouths. Make small changes while watching a familiar scene, because the correct value depends on the TV’s processing and the source.

Prefer HDMI ARC/eARC or optical for television playback. KEF warns that Bluetooth has inherent delay in its codec, so Bluetooth is a poor choice when synchronized dialogue matters. Switching from Bluetooth to a wired TV input often removes the largest source of delay; if a small offset remains, use the TV’s synchronization control rather than changing speaker volume or repeatedly reconnecting the cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check when there is no sound at all?

When the LED and cabling look normal, check the complete playback chain instead of assuming the TV is at fault.

  • Confirm both LS60 speakers are powered.
  • Make sure neither speaker is muted and that the volume is high enough to hear.
  • Verify that the correct LS60 speaker set is selected in the control interface.
  • Select the source that matches the cable: TV for HDMI, or optical for TOSLINK.
  • Confirm the TV itself is not muted and is set to the external audio output.
  • Set the TV and the active app to PCM.
  • Try a different program or app to determine whether the silence is limited to one source.

If these checks do not restore audio, replace or reseat the HDMI or optical cable, then power-cycle the TV for about 10–15 seconds as described above. Persistent failures should be escalated through the Support function in the KEF Connect App.

How do I stop streaming dropouts?

Streaming interruptions are usually network-related rather than an ARC or optical wiring fault. Start with the speaker connection test in KEF Connect, then reduce conditions that compete with the speakers for Wi-Fi capacity.

Reduce wireless congestion

  • Move the speakers or router to reduce physical interference.
  • Reduce other heavy network activity while testing playback.
  • Lower streaming quality temporarily to see whether a lower data rate remains stable.
  • Minimize nearby wireless interference where practical.

Use a wired network path

If wireless dropouts continue, connect the speakers’ internet port to the router. Run the connection test again and repeat the same stream. This does not change the TV’s HDMI or optical wiring; it stabilizes the network path used by streaming services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I replace the cable or contact support?

Replace the HDMI cable when it is loose, visibly damaged, or fails after you have confirmed the television’s ARC/eARC port and PCM setting. A different cable is also a useful diagnostic because KEF specifically recommends changing the HDMI cable during no-sound troubleshooting.

Use optical temporarily when HDMI remains unreliable, provided the TV can output PCM. Contact KEF Support through the KEF Connect App when neither wired input produces sound after checking the source, mute, volume, CEC, PCM, cable seating, replacement cable, and TV power cycle. Include the LED state and the exact input you tested; those details distinguish a missing connection from an audio-format problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the LS60 use the TV’s ordinary HDMI input for audio return?

No. The cable must be connected to the television’s ARC or eARC socket. A standard HDMI socket may accept video devices but does not provide the audio-return channel the LS60 needs for TV sound.

Why does one streaming app work while another is silent?

Streaming apps can apply their own audio-format selection instead of following the television’s global choice. Open the silent app’s playback or audio menu and select PCM or its compatible stereo option, then restart the program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will optical preserve the TV remote’s HDMI control functions?

No. Optical carries the audio signal but not HDMI-CEC control signaling. If volume and power control through the TV remote matter, restore HDMI ARC/eARC and enable CEC.

What information should I give KEF Support?

Report whether the Primary Speaker LED is solid, pulsing, or blinking light blue; identify whether you tested HDMI, optical, or both; and state that PCM, cable replacement, and a 10–15-second TV power cycle were tried. That information helps support distinguish connection negotiation from audio-format and playback issues.
