For the simplest setup, connect the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port to the Bose soundbar’s HDMI ARC port, then choose the soundbar as the TV’s audio output. If the TV has no ARC/eARC port, use an optical cable from the TV’s optical OUT to the soundbar’s OPTICAL IN. Most sound problems come down to the wrong port, an audio-output setting, or an ARC/CEC handshake—not a failed soundbar.
Which connection should I use: HDMI ARC/eARC or optical?
Use HDMI ARC or eARC when both the TV and soundbar have the matching ports. It carries TV audio over one HDMI cable and can also support HDMI-CEC control. Use optical if ARC/eARC is unavailable or if HDMI control compatibility is causing trouble. Bose’s setup guidance identifies optical as the alternative when a TV lacks ARC/eARC.

| Consideration | HDMI ARC/eARC | Optical |
|---|---|---|
| TV port required | A port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC | An optical digital audio output, usually labeled Optical OUT or Optical Output |
| Soundbar port | HDMI ARC | OPTICAL IN |
| TV control | Can use HDMI-CEC; control behavior and menu names vary by TV | Does not carry HDMI-CEC commands |
| Audio bandwidth and formats | eARC offers more bandwidth for advanced formats such as Dolby Atmos, according to Bose | Supports audio formats available over optical; format support depends on the TV and audio configuration |
| Compatibility considerations | CEC/ARC behavior can vary between brands; optical can bypass those HDMI-control issues | A useful alternative when ARC/CEC is unreliable |
| Extra equipment | A High Speed HDMI cable or better | An optical cable; if the TV has neither ARC/eARC nor optical output, a converter may be needed, depending on its available outputs |
ARC means Audio Return Channel: it lets the TV send audio back through an HDMI connection to the soundbar. The HDMI port matters. A regular HDMI input on the TV is not a substitute for the port marked ARC or eARC.
How do I connect a Bose soundbar to a TV with HDMI ARC or eARC?
Use a High Speed HDMI cable or better and connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI ARC port. Then set the TV to send sound to an external audio device and enable ARC/CEC if the TV requires it.

- SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
- Find the TV’s return-audio port. Look for a label such as HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC beside one of the TV’s HDMI sockets. If none is present, follow the optical setup below.
- Connect the cable. Plug one end of a High Speed HDMI cable or better into the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the other into the Bose soundbar’s HDMI ARC port. Do not use an unmarked TV HDMI port for this connection.
- Select the TV audio output. In the TV’s sound or audio menu, choose an external soundbar or receiver when that option is available. The exact wording depends on the TV manufacturer.
- Enable ARC and CEC if needed. Turn on the TV’s ARC and HDMI-CEC settings if required. CEC may have a manufacturer-specific name, so consult the TV’s manual if you cannot find it.
- Test playback. Play audio from a TV app or connected source and check that sound comes from the soundbar. Raise the soundbar volume and confirm that it is not muted.
When the setup works, the HDMI link carries TV audio to the soundbar; CEC may also allow connected devices to coordinate control. If you only need sound and ARC/CEC is being temperamental, optical is a practical fallback, though it does not carry those CEC commands.
How do I connect the soundbar with an optical cable?
Connect the TV’s optical OUT to the Bose soundbar’s OPTICAL IN, then choose the TV source on the soundbar and check the TV’s audio-output settings. Make sure the cable is connected to an output on the TV, not an optical input.
- Check for an optical output. Find the TV socket labeled Optical OUT, Optical Output, or a similar output label.
- Connect the optical cable. Run it from the TV’s optical output to OPTICAL IN on the soundbar.
- Choose the appropriate source. Select the TV source on the soundbar.
- Set the TV’s audio output. If the TV has an audio-output selection, choose the external or optical output as appropriate. Menu labels vary by manufacturer.
- Test the audio. Play TV audio and check that the soundbar is selected, powered on, unmuted, and at an audible volume.
If the TV has neither HDMI ARC/eARC nor optical output, it cannot connect directly to the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar using either of these methods, according to Bose’s setup guidance. An audio converter may be an option when the TV has only analog, coaxial, or 3.5 mm outputs, but the converter type depends on the actual TV output and soundbar input; check both devices’ ports before buying one.

Why is there no sound from my Bose soundbar?
Start with power, mute, volume, the selected source, and the physical port. Then check the TV’s output and ARC/CEC settings, reseat the cable, and restart the devices. Testing another source can show whether the problem is limited to TV audio.
Check the basic causes first
- Confirm the soundbar is powered on, not muted, and turned up.
- Verify that the soundbar is on the TV source when using TV audio.
- Try another source or app. If that works, focus on the TV connection or the particular source rather than assuming the soundbar has failed.
- Check the cable ends and ports. HDMI must connect through the TV’s ARC/eARC port; optical must run from the TV’s optical OUT to the soundbar’s OPTICAL IN.
Check the TV’s audio settings
Look in the TV’s sound menu for an external soundbar or receiver output and select it if available. For HDMI, confirm that ARC and CEC are enabled where required. TV makers use different names and menu paths for CEC, so use the TV’s own guide if the setting is not obvious.
Reseat, replace, or bypass the connection
Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. If audio remains intermittent, Bose recommends trying a different High Speed HDMI cable. If ARC/CEC still causes problems, use optical to bypass HDMI control compatibility, provided the TV and soundbar have the required optical ports.

Power-cycle and update the devices
Restart the TV, source device, and soundbar. Bose’s owner guidance specifically recommends unplugging the soundbar and optional modules for 30 seconds before reconnecting them. Check for available TV and soundbar software updates as well; if a particular app or source is the only one affected, test another before changing more settings.
Why is sound still coming from the TV speakers?
The TV may still be set to its internal speakers, or the HDMI connection may not be using ARC/eARC. Choose an external or fixed audio output in the TV menu, confirm the port and CEC settings, and reseat the HDMI cable.
- In the TV’s audio menu, turn off internal speakers or choose External/Fixed audio output, if those options are available.
- Check that the HDMI cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port—not a standard HDMI input—and the soundbar’s HDMI ARC port.
- Enable CEC and ARC if the TV requires them for soundbar routing.
- Lower the TV volume while checking whether the soundbar is playing. If routing still does not work, Bose suggests trying optical or connecting both HDMI and optical.
Connecting both cables is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that every TV will route or prioritize audio the same way. Use the TV’s output settings to select the intended path and test the result.

How do I fix poor, distorted, or missing surround sound?
First check whether the issue occurs with every source. Then confirm that the TV can output surround sound and review the audio-format and passthrough settings on both the TV and source device.

- Test a different TV app or source. A problem limited to one input or app may come from that source’s audio settings.
- Reduce the volume on a connected source device if its output is contributing to distortion.
- Check whether the TV is configured to output surround sound and whether the source device is set to a compatible audio-output or passthrough mode.
- When using TV audio, inspect the detected format in the Bose app. Bose lists LPCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, and AAC among the formats that may appear.
A detected format is useful diagnostic information, not proof that every TV, app, connection, or soundbar setup supports every listed format. If the format differs from what you expect, compare the TV and source device’s output and passthrough settings with the capabilities of the devices in your setup.

Adjust the TV’s or soundbar’s Audio Delay or Lip Sync control until the dialogue matches the picture. Bose says a small processing delay is usually responsible for a sound-and-picture mismatch.

- Change the timing gradually while playing dialogue or other content where the mismatch is easy to notice.
- Keep the setting that best aligns speech with the picture; return it toward its original value if the adjustment makes synchronization worse.
Because the control may be on either device, check both menus if you cannot find it on the first one. The available label and adjustment range depend on the device.
What should I check before replacing a cable or soundbar?
Confirm the connection type and port labels before replacing anything. For intermittent ARC audio, a different High Speed HDMI cable is a reasonable test; for persistent ARC/CEC compatibility trouble, optical can help isolate the connection path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any HDMI port on my TV to connect a Bose soundbar?
No. The TV socket must be labeled ARC or eARC for the HDMI return-audio connection. A standard HDMI input does not provide that TV-to-soundbar return path.
Will an optical cable let my TV remote control the Bose soundbar?
Optical carries audio but not HDMI-CEC commands. If you rely on CEC-based control, HDMI ARC/eARC is the connection to try when both devices support it.
What does it mean if the Bose app shows LPCM or Dolby Digital?
It identifies a format detected for the TV audio path. Bose also lists Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, and AAC as formats that may appear; the format you see depends on the TV and source output configuration.
Can I connect a TV with only a headphone or analog output?
Possibly, using an audio converter, but the correct device depends on the TV’s output and the soundbar’s available input. Bose owner guidance describes converters for analog, coaxial, or 3.5 mm-only TV outputs; check the exact port types before choosing one.
