You can turn an OctoPrint-managed 3D printer into a useful smart-home device without replacing its firmware. Home Assistant’s native OctoPrint integration can show print state, progress, temperatures, estimated completion, controls and a configured camera; automations can then notify you, change lights or reconnect the printer after an OctoPrint restart. A separate OctoPrint discovery plugin can publish status over MQTT, provided you run an MQTT broker and the required plugins.

The five ideas below are deliberately different: a live printer dashboard, finish and error scenes, an in-dashboard camera, restart recovery, and MQTT-discovered progress sensors. Use the native integration for the simplest supported path, or MQTT when your existing OctoPrint setup already depends on that ecosystem.

What do I need before connecting a 3D printer to Home Assistant?

Your printer needs a working OctoPrint server that Home Assistant can reach on your local network. You also need a Home Assistant installation and the OctoPrint connection details requested by the integration. The exact entities Home Assistant creates depend on what your OctoPrint instance reports and how the printer is configured.

There are two documented approaches:

  • Native OctoPrint integration: Home Assistant polls OctoPrint locally and exposes job, printer, temperature, control and (when configured) camera entities.
  • MQTT discovery plugin: an OctoPrint plugin publishes status and progress to an MQTT broker, where Home Assistant discovers the entities. This requires OctoPrint-MQTT, the Home Assistant Discovery plugin and a working MQTT service.

Do not install both paths blindly. Running both can create duplicate sensors with different names and update behavior. Decide whether you want the native integration’s direct polling or an MQTT-based setup that fits an MQTT-centered installation.

How do I build a 3D-printer dashboard in Home Assistant?

Start with the native OctoPrint integration. It is the most direct way to see whether a job is printing, how far it has progressed and whether temperatures are ready, all from one Home Assistant view.

1. Add OctoPrint and identify its entities

  1. In Home Assistant, open Settings, choose Devices & services, select Add integration, and search for OctoPrint.
  2. Enter the OctoPrint connection information requested by the setup flow and finish the configuration.
  3. Open the resulting OctoPrint device and note the entity names. Entity IDs are generated from your installation, so use the IDs shown in your system rather than copying someone else’s.

The integration can provide a binary sensor indicating that the printer is printing and another for print errors. Job and printer sensors may include current state, completion percentage, estimated finish time, current file name, actual nozzle temperature, target nozzle temperature, actual bed temperature and target bed temperature.

2. Arrange the dashboard around decisions

Put the information you check most often at the top: printing or idle state, completion percentage, estimated finish time and the current file. A second row can show nozzle and bed temperatures as actual-versus-target pairs. Keep pause, resume and stop controls in a separate card so an accidental tap is less likely while you are only checking status.

Use conditional cards to make problems visible. For example, show the print-error binary sensor prominently when it is on, and hide temperature controls when no printer is connected. A history graph for progress and temperatures can help you spot a stalled job, but it should be treated as a diagnostic view rather than a guarantee that every failure will be detected.

Can Home Assistant tell me when a 3D print finishes or fails?

Yes. Use the OctoPrint state exposed by Home Assistant as a trigger, then choose a notification, a light scene or both as the action. A finish notification is an automation you build; it is not a separate built-in “finished print” feature.

Finish notification pattern

The printing binary sensor normally changes from on while a job is active to off when printing stops. Because stopping can also mean canceling or an error, combine that transition with the job state or error sensor so your message distinguishes a normal completion from a problem.

alias: Notify when the print is no longer running
trigger:
  - platform: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.octoprint_printing
    from: "on"
    to: "off"
condition: []
action:
  - service: notify.mobile_app_your_phone
    data:
      title: "OctoPrint job stopped"
message: "Check the OctoPrint state and error sensor."
mode: single

Replace the example entity and notification service with the names in your installation. To make this a “finished” alert rather than a generic stop alert, add a condition that the print-error sensor is off and, where available, that the job state reports completion. Include the current file name and completion percentage in the message so you can identify the job without opening the dashboard.

Error lighting scene

Create a second automation whose trigger is the print-error binary sensor changing to on. Its action can turn a chosen light red, flash a lamp briefly, or activate a scene that is visible from another room. Add a separate action to restore the previous lighting when the error sensor clears; otherwise an alert color can remain indefinitely.

For a quieter setup, use the estimated finish-time sensor to send a reminder before the job should end, then let the actual state transition deliver the final alert. Estimated times are predictions from OctoPrint, so treat them as scheduling aids rather than deadlines.

How can I put the OctoPrint camera in my smart-home dashboard?

Home Assistant can display the camera feed that OctoPrint is configured to use. The camera must first work in OctoPrint; adding a webcam to your network does not automatically create a Home Assistant camera entity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the camera at the OctoPrint side

  1. Set up a supported camera in OctoPrint and confirm that its live view works there.
  2. Record the camera stream details OctoPrint uses, such as its MJPEG stream address when applicable.
  3. Reload or reconfigure the Home Assistant OctoPrint integration if the camera entity does not appear immediately.

Add the resulting camera entity to a picture-entity or picture-glance card on the printer dashboard. Keep the feed near the progress and temperature cards so you can check a first layer or a suspected failure without switching applications.

The OctoPrint Home Assistant discovery plugin has an important limitation: its MQTT discovery does not automatically expose the camera. If you choose the MQTT route, configure the camera separately using the MJPEG camera method described for your setup. Camera compatibility varies by OctoPrint configuration, so verify the stream before relying on it for unattended monitoring.

How do I reconnect a printer after an OctoPrint server restart?

Home Assistant documents an octoprint.printer_connect action that asks OctoPrint to connect to the printer again. You can call it when an OctoPrint-related sensor becomes available after a server restart, but it is a connection-recovery aid—not a promise that a disrupted job will resume safely.

Build the recovery automation

  1. Choose a sensor that becomes unavailable when the OctoPrint server disappears, such as the printing sensor created by the integration.
  2. Create a state trigger for that entity changing from unavailable back to an available state, or use the availability transition your installation actually reports.
  3. Call the documented octoprint.printer_connect action.
  4. After the action, check the printer connection state and error sensor. Notify yourself if the connection remains unavailable.
alias: Ask OctoPrint to reconnect after restart
description: Illustrative entity names; use the IDs in your installation.
trigger:
  - platform: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.octoprint_printing
    from: "unavailable"
action:
  - service: octoprint.printer_connect
mode: single

Test the trigger with the printer idle before relying on it during a long job. A server restart, USB disconnect, printer power loss or firmware fault can produce different states. Reconnecting OctoPrint does not restart heaters, clear a mechanical fault or automatically resume an interrupted print; inspect the machine before taking any further action.

How can MQTT discovery publish printer progress sensors?

MQTT discovery is useful when your smart home already uses MQTT as its event bus. The OctoPrint Home Assistant discovery plugin describes publishing printer status and printing/progress sensors through MQTT, while Home Assistant’s MQTT integration requires an MQTT broker.

Required components

  • An MQTT broker reachable by both Home Assistant and OctoPrint. Home Assistant documentation recommends a private, self-managed broker setup such as the Mosquitto broker app.
  • The OctoPrint-MQTT plugin, configured to connect to that broker.
  • The OctoPrint Home Assistant Discovery plugin, with discovery enabled.
  • Matching credentials, host, port and topic settings on both sides.

Typical setup sequence

  1. Install and configure the MQTT integration in Home Assistant, then verify that the broker is connected.
  2. Install OctoPrint-MQTT and enter the broker address and authentication details.
  3. Install the Home Assistant Discovery plugin in OctoPrint and enable its discovery publishing.
  4. Restart or reload the relevant OctoPrint plugins, then watch Home Assistant’s MQTT device list for the discovered printer.
  5. Confirm that status and progress values change during a short test print before building automations around them.

The plugin listing reports a last release of August 6, 2023, after its registration on June 14, 2020. Check its current maintenance status and compatibility with your OctoPrint and Home Assistant versions before making it the foundation of a new installation. MQTT is described as local push, while the native integration uses local polling; those are implementation differences, not proof that one is universally faster or more reliable.

Which connection method should I choose: native OctoPrint or MQTT discovery?

Choose the native integration unless you already have a reason to standardize on MQTT. MQTT discovery adds flexibility for an MQTT-based home but also adds a broker and plugin compatibility to maintain.

Consideration Native Home Assistant OctoPrint integration OctoPrint Home Assistant discovery plugin
Core dependency Reachable OctoPrint server and the integration’s connection credentials OctoPrint-MQTT, discovery plugin and a working Home Assistant MQTT broker
Update model Local polling of OctoPrint Local MQTT push as described by the plugin
Typical data Printing and error sensors, job progress, estimated finish, file name, temperatures, pause/resume/stop and temperature targets Printer status plus printing and progress sensors published through MQTT
Camera Available when a camera is configured in OctoPrint Not automatically exposed by MQTT discovery; configure the camera separately
Maintenance concern Fewer moving parts inside Home Assistant Broker operation and plugin compatibility, including the plugin’s reported 2023-08-06 last release

These approaches can coexist for testing, but duplicate entities make dashboards and automations harder to manage. If you migrate from one to the other, disable the old integration or rename devices deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can go wrong, and how do I troubleshoot it?

  • No OctoPrint device appears: confirm that Home Assistant can reach the OctoPrint host on the local network and that the credentials are correct. Check the integration’s setup error before changing printer settings.
  • Progress is missing: inspect the device’s entity list. Some entities depend on OctoPrint’s reported state and may not be created for every configuration.
  • The camera is absent: verify the stream in OctoPrint first. MQTT discovery alone does not import it, and an unsupported or misconfigured stream will remain unavailable in Home Assistant.
  • Reconnect automation loops: add a condition or cooldown so repeated availability changes do not call the connect action continuously. Investigate USB, power and firmware faults instead of treating retries as a repair.
  • MQTT entities never appear: check broker connectivity, credentials, discovery enablement and topic configuration on both plugins. Review broker logs for authentication or topic errors.
  • A control causes an unsafe result: pause, resume, stop and temperature-target controls affect a physical machine. Restrict access to trusted users and keep a physical emergency-stop procedure available.

A power-monitoring smart plug can be added later to observe the printer’s electricity use, but it is not a safety device. Never cut power to a printer during a job as an automatic “recovery” strategy, and verify the plug and printer are electrically compatible before using one for monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my 3D-printer model need a Home Assistant integration of its own?

Not when the printer is operated through a reachable OctoPrint server. Home Assistant communicates with OctoPrint, so model-specific support is largely determined by what OctoPrint exposes; the exact sensors and controls can still vary by setup.

Will the reconnect automation resume a print that was interrupted?

No. The documented action requests a printer connection from OctoPrint. It does not verify the physical cause of the interruption or authorize an automatic resume, which could be unsafe after a layer shift, power event or cooled build plate.

Why do MQTT-discovered sensors update differently from native sensors?

The native integration polls OctoPrint locally, while the discovery plugin publishes MQTT messages when values change. Timing, retained messages and broker availability can therefore affect what Home Assistant displays, even on the same local network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the dashboard controls when I am away from home?

The documented setup is local, and remote access introduces additional security and availability considerations. If you expose Home Assistant remotely, protect accounts with strong authentication and limit printer-control permissions rather than publishing OctoPrint directly to the internet.
