To configure SmartGuard on an Android TV, install the hide.me app, sign in with a Premium account, connect to any hide.me server, then open Settings > SmartGuard and enable the protections you want. SmartGuard works as DNS filtering inside an active hide.me VPN tunnel, so changing your television or router DNS is not required. If the menu is missing, update the Android TV app: hide.me added SmartGuard to the TV app in version 6.1.0. Keeping Settings > Auto Connect set to Enable VPN helps the filters return after a restart or network change.
What is SmartGuard on Android TV?
SmartGuard is hide.me’s DNS-based filtering feature. It uses lists of known malicious websites and advertising or tracker domains to block those destinations before the Android TV app can access them. The feature is controlled from the hide.me VPN application rather than from a separate Android TV network setting.

SmartGuard is available to Premium users. It is supported on platforms where the hide.me application runs, including Android. hide.me’s Android release notes identify version 6.1.0 as the release that added SmartGuard to the TV app in 2026. The Android TV application itself is documented as compatible with Android TV 7.0 and newer.
Because SmartGuard depends on the VPN tunnel, it is not an always-on filter when hide.me is disconnected. The TV must have an active hide.me connection for the SmartGuard rules to be used.

What do you need before configuring SmartGuard?
- An Android TV device running Android TV 7.0 or later.
- A hide.me account with Premium access, because SmartGuard is a Premium feature.
- Your hide.me login credentials.
- The current hide.me Android TV application, preferably installed from Google Play.
- A working internet connection on the TV.
If your television or streaming box cannot run Android TV 7.0 or newer, the documented Android TV procedure may not apply. Check the device’s software information before troubleshooting the app. The exact names of system menus can vary between television manufacturers, but the hide.me controls remain inside the application.
How do you install hide.me on Android TV?
Install from Google Play
- From the Android TV home screen, open the Google Play Store.
- Search for the official hide.me application and choose Install.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then open the app from the Play Store or the Android TV app row.
Google Play is the preferred installation route because Android TV handles the download and update process. If the store reports that the app is unavailable or the installation fails, use hide.me’s official Android TV APK instead of an APK from an unverified mirror.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSideload the official Android TV APK
There are two documented alternatives when Play Store installation does not work: download the official Android TV APK with Downloader, or copy the APK to a USB drive and open it with File Commander.
- Obtain the Android TV APK from hide.me’s official distribution.
- If using Downloader, install or open Downloader on the TV and use it to retrieve the APK. If using USB, copy the APK to a drive, connect the drive to the TV, and open the file with File Commander.
- When Android TV asks whether the utility may install an unknown app, grant that permission to the utility you are using. The permission is for Downloader or File Commander, not a blanket instruction to enable every source.
- Run the APK installer and accept the installation prompt.
- After installation, open hide.me and remove the APK or revoke the utility’s install permission if you no longer need sideloading.
Android TV may use different wording for the unknown-source permission. If the installer stops immediately, return to the system permission prompt and allow installation for the specific utility that launched the APK. Installing the official package and keeping the app updated also reduces the chance of a missing SmartGuard menu.
How do you sign in and connect the VPN?
- Open hide.me on the Android TV.
- Choose the sign-in option and enter your hide.me credentials.
- Accept Android’s VPN connection request if it appears.
- Connect to any hide.me server.
SmartGuard is not tied to a particular server. The current requirement is an active hide.me VPN connection, so choose any available hide.me location that meets your normal streaming or latency needs. Wait until the app reports that the VPN is connected before changing SmartGuard settings or testing a blocked site.
How do you open SmartGuard and turn on filtering?
- With the VPN connected, open the hide.me app’s main menu.
- Go to Settings > SmartGuard.
- Turn on the protections you want on the SmartGuard page.
- Review the available category controls and save or leave the page according to the app’s prompts.
SmartGuard’s controls are applied by DNS filtering. The feature checks requested domains against hide.me’s lists of known malicious websites and ad or tracker domains, so it can stop a matching request before the TV reaches the destination. A normal VPN connection can remain active even when SmartGuard options are turned off; the filtering controls and the VPN tunnel are related, but they are not the same switch.

Which SmartGuard protections can you customize?
Advertising and tracker filtering
Enable the available advertising and tracker protections when you want SmartGuard to remove requests to domains identified in hide.me’s filtering lists. DNS filtering works at the domain-request level, so it can affect a website or application that loads advertising or analytics from a matching domain. It does not guarantee that every visual advertisement or every tracking technique will disappear.
Malicious-site protection
The malicious-site list is intended to block known dangerous websites before access. This is a preventive layer, not a substitute for keeping Android TV, the hide.me app, and other installed applications updated. A newly created or unlisted domain may not appear in the list, and a blocked domain can change over time.
Optional parental categories
The SmartGuard page documents optional parental filters for categories such as gambling and adult content. Turn on the categories that match your household’s policy, then test the apps and websites your family actually uses. Category filtering can produce false positives when a legitimate service shares infrastructure with a restricted category, so use an allow entry when a trusted domain is blocked.
Custom allow and block entries
SmartGuard lets you add your own website entries to allow or block lists. Use a block entry for a domain you do not want the TV to reach, or an allow entry when a trusted service is incorrectly caught by a category or reputation list. Enter the domain carefully and test the result from the TV after the VPN is connected. A custom rule cannot help if the application is not sending its DNS requests through the active hide.me tunnel.
How do you keep SmartGuard active after restarts?
- Open hide.me and go to Settings > Auto Connect.
- Choose an action such as Enable VPN.
- Leave Auto Connect enabled and restart the TV or briefly change networks to verify the behavior.
SmartGuard requires an active tunnel, so an automatic reconnect is the practical way to preserve filtering after a television restart, a Wi-Fi interruption, or another network change. If Android TV displays a VPN permission prompt again after an update, approve it so the automatic connection can start.
Do you need to change DNS on Android TV?
No. When you use the hide.me client, manual DNS changes are not required to activate SmartGuard. The SmartGuard controls in the app select the DNS filtering behavior associated with the active hide.me connection.

Manual DNS settings are relevant only when you configure a VPN connection yourself rather than using the hide.me application. hide.me’s example public DNS values are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, but those addresses are general public DNS examples, not SmartGuard switches. Entering them on the TV or router will not turn SmartGuard on, expose its category controls, or satisfy the requirement for an active hide.me tunnel.
Avoid changing router DNS while diagnosing an app-level SmartGuard problem. Make one change at a time: first verify the hide.me connection, then verify the SmartGuard settings, and only investigate manual DNS if you are deliberately running a manually configured VPN.
How does SmartGuard differ from ordinary DNS changes?
| Question | SmartGuard in the hide.me app | Manual DNS configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it configured? | hide.me app: Settings > SmartGuard | Device, router, or manual VPN network settings |
| Does it require a hide.me tunnel? | Yes. The VPN must be actively connected. | Not necessarily; it depends on the DNS or VPN setup you choose. |
| What controls are documented? | Ad, tracker, malicious-site, parental-category, allow, and block controls, subject to the options shown in the app. | DNS server selection only; the example values 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 are not SmartGuard controls. |
| Who receives the filtering? | Traffic sent through the active hide.me connection on the Android TV. | Devices or connections that use the manually configured DNS service. |
| Is Premium required? | Yes, according to hide.me’s SmartGuard documentation. | There is no SmartGuard Premium requirement because this is a different configuration. |
This distinction explains why a router DNS edit can appear to do nothing in the hide.me app: it does not enable the feature’s lists or controls. Conversely, SmartGuard is not a router-wide policy for every device on your home network; it is tied to the hide.me connection running on the TV.
Why is the SmartGuard menu missing?
The app is older than the TV feature release
Update hide.me through Google Play and reopen it. hide.me’s Android release notes state that version 6.1.0 added SmartGuard to the TV app. If Play Store updates are unavailable, install the current official Android TV APK using the sideload procedure above.
The device is not running a supported Android TV version
Confirm that the television or streaming box uses Android TV 7.0 or newer. The documented compatibility statement applies to Android TV, not every television operating system that happens to include an app store. An unsupported operating system may not expose the TV application or its SmartGuard controls.
You are looking in the wrong application
SmartGuard is a setting inside hide.me. Open the hide.me VPN app itself rather than the Android TV network panel, a router dashboard, or a separate DNS utility. The documented path is Settings > SmartGuard.

Why does filtering appear inactive?
Confirm the tunnel first
Return to the hide.me home screen and check that it reports an active VPN connection. SmartGuard requires that connection; toggling a filter while the tunnel is disconnected does not create an independent DNS service.
Check the rule and the test target
Review the enabled categories and any custom allow entries. An allow entry can override the result you expected from a block or category list. Test a domain that you deliberately added to the block list and then test a trusted domain that should remain available. Do not infer failure from one page alone: a site may use several domains, and only the matching request is filtered.
Consider app-specific behavior
Some Android TV applications use their own networking behavior or load content from domains that are not in the known lists. SmartGuard is a DNS filter, not a full content inspection system, so it cannot promise to remove every advertisement or identify every malicious domain.
What should you do if installation is blocked?
Try Google Play first. If Play Store installation fails, confirm that the APK is the official hide.me Android TV package, then grant unknown-app installation permission to Downloader or File Commander when Android TV asks. If the permission was granted to a different utility, the installer can still be blocked because Android TV permissions are assigned per source application.
After a successful sideload, open the app and check the version. If SmartGuard is absent, update to a release that includes the TV feature; version 6.1.0 is the documented addition point. Avoid treating a generic Android-phone APK as equivalent to the Android TV package, because the documented compatibility and interface refer to the TV application.
How do you fix reconnect problems?
- Open Settings > Auto Connect in hide.me.
- Select Enable VPN or the equivalent automatic-connect action shown by the app.
- Disconnect and reconnect the TV’s network, then restart Android TV.
- Open hide.me after the restart and verify that the VPN is connected before testing SmartGuard.
If the tunnel does not reconnect, SmartGuard cannot filter requests during that period. Treat the VPN connection as the first fault to isolate; changing DNS addresses will not repair an Auto Connect failure.
Best Value
What are SmartGuard’s practical limits?
- It is a DNS-based filter, so it works with domain requests represented in its lists rather than inspecting every byte of every connection.
- It depends on an active hide.me VPN connection and therefore stops being effective for the TV when that tunnel is disconnected.
- Its coverage depends on hide.me’s known malicious, advertising, tracker, and category lists; no list can guarantee detection of every new domain.
- Parental categories and custom rules can affect access to legitimate services, so maintain an allow entry when a trusted domain is incorrectly blocked.
- It protects traffic using hide.me on the TV, not unrelated devices that happen to share the same Wi-Fi network.
hide.me states that SmartGuard follows the service’s privacy approach and that it stores no logs of the websites you visit. That is the vendor’s documented policy statement; it does not change the technical requirement for an active VPN tunnel.
How should you maintain the setup?
Keep the hide.me Android TV app current through Google Play when possible. Recheck the SmartGuard page after an app update, especially if the interface changes or a category appears to have reset. Leave Auto Connect enabled if the TV is expected to filter traffic without manual intervention after every restart.

What is the quickest configuration checklist?
- Confirm Android TV 7.0 or newer and a hide.me Premium account.

- Add custom allow or block entries carefully and test them.
- Open Settings > Auto Connect and choose Enable VPN.
- Do not change Android TV or router DNS unless you are intentionally using a manually configured VPN instead of the hide.me app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SmartGuard protect every device connected to my home router?
No. SmartGuard is attached to the hide.me VPN connection running on the Android TV. Phones, computers, and other televisions on the same Wi-Fi need their own filtering or VPN configuration.
Will SmartGuard block an advertisement inside every Android TV app?
Not necessarily. It blocks matching domain requests through DNS lists, while an app can load content from unlisted domains or combine advertising with the same domain used for ordinary content. A DNS filter cannot guarantee removal of every in-app advertisement.
Can I use SmartGuard while connected to a manually configured VPN?
The documented SmartGuard workflow uses the hide.me application and requires its active VPN connection. Manual DNS or manual VPN settings are separate configurations and do not expose the SmartGuard controls described in the app.

A category or custom block can classify a shared domain more broadly than you expect. Check the SmartGuard allow list and add the trusted domain there, then test again while the hide.me tunnel is connected.
Does SmartGuard keep working during a VPN outage?
No. Filtering depends on an active hide.me tunnel. Enabling Auto Connect reduces the time without protection after a restart or network change, but it cannot filter requests while the VPN remains disconnected.
