Compare the exact phone model on four separate points: how long it gets operating-system and security updates, when that support clock starts, how quickly updates reach your region and variant, and whether you can obtain and replace important parts. Then check battery and durability information. A long software promise does not make a worn battery or damaged screen last longer, and an easy-to-repair phone may not offer the same features as a flagship. The right choice is the model whose support dates, repair route and practical trade-offs fit how long you plan to keep it.

What should I compare before buying a phone for long-term use?

Compare the exact model—not just the brand or product family—on four axes: software coverage, update delivery, repairability and physical durability. Record operating-system upgrades, security updates and feature updates separately; find the event that starts the support clock; and verify that the promise applies to the model, region and carrier version you intend to buy.

For repairability, check the route for replacing the battery and display, which spare parts are available, who is allowed to buy them, and whether repair instructions and the necessary tools are accessible. Finally, look for battery-cycle and drop, scratch, dust and water-resistance information. These checks answer different questions: software support helps keep a phone current and protected, while parts and durability affect whether it remains usable when something wears out or breaks.

  • Software: What kinds of updates are promised, and through what date?
  • Timing: From what date does support begin, and does that date apply to the version being sold?
  • Delivery: Could region, carrier or device variant change availability or timing?
  • Repair: Can you replace key parts yourself, or does the process require a professional?
  • Durability: What does the model-level information say about battery endurance and resistance to damage?

Do not treat a headline such as “seven years of support” or “repairable” as a complete comparison. The start date, type of update, delivery caveats and actual parts route determine what that headline means for a particular buyer.

How many years of updates will this phone get?

There is no single figure that answers this for every phone. Check the manufacturer’s commitment for the exact model and separate operating-system upgrades, security updates and feature updates; then note the support start date and promised end date.

Separate the kinds of updates

An operating-system upgrade moves the phone to a later major version of its operating system. A security update addresses security issues, while a feature update can add or change functionality without being the same thing as a new major OS version. A manufacturer may include some or all of these in a headline support term, so read the commitment’s scope rather than assuming “years of updates” covers every category equally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s Pixel 8 policy is one clearly specified example: Google says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of operating-system and security updates, with Feature Drops included in the Pixel 8 commitment. The support clock starts when the device first became available on the US Google Store. That is a US-store start date, not necessarily the date a particular buyer purchases a phone in another country.

Fairphone’s current support roadmap for Fairphone 5 lists at least five Android version upgrades and at least eight years of security updates. Its stated cadence is monthly security updates for about three years, followed by updates every two months from August 2026 until the end of support in August 2031. The distinction matters: an eight-year security commitment does not mean monthly releases throughout all eight years, nor does it mean eight Android version upgrades.

Understand the EU baseline separately from a brand promise

For covered products, the European Commission’s 2025 rules set a legal baseline of at least five years of operating-system updates after the last unit is placed on the EU market when the manufacturer provides security, corrective or functionality updates. This clock is tied to the last unit’s placement on the EU market, not simply to a buyer’s purchase date. It is a baseline for products in scope, not evidence that every model receives the same update cadence, arrives promptly in every region or gets every new feature.

A legal minimum and a manufacturer’s model-specific commitment are different kinds of evidence. Use the commitment applicable to the phone you plan to buy, and treat EU requirements as a relevant floor only when the product and sale fall within their scope.

When does the update-support clock start and end?

A support duration is only useful when you know the dates behind it. Record the trigger that starts the clock and the stated end date; otherwise, two phones described with the same number of years may leave different support time remaining when you buy them.

Google Pixel 8 - Unlocked Android Smartphone with Advanced Pixel Camera, 24-Hour Battery, and Powerful Security - Obsidian - 128 GB
  • Pixel 8 is the helpful phone engineered by Google; the new Google Tensor G3 chip is custom-designed with Google AI for cutting-edge photo and video features and smarter ways to help[1]
  • Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Google Pixel 8 has a fully upgraded camera with advanced image processing to reveal vivid colors and striking details; and now with Macro Focus, even the smallest subjects can become spectacular images
  • The 6.2-inch Pixel 8 Actua display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[3,4]
  • Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[5]; and it charges faster than ever[6]

Look for wording such as first availability in a named store or market, first sale in a region, or a period measured from the last unit being placed on a market. Do not silently substitute the phone’s launch date, your purchase date or the date a retailer clears its stock. If the manufacturer’s commitment does not make the trigger clear, the remaining support period for an older or used unit is not established by a duration alone.

Before buying old stock or a used phone, check the exact model’s official support page, the current security-patch level on the device, and the support end date. A phone might still be inside its promised window yet already be behind on updates; a seller’s description of it as “supported” does not establish that the installed software is current.

Will updates arrive on time for my region and phone variant?

A published commitment does not guarantee that every buyer receives an update on the same day. Google says rollout can be gradual and can depend on the carrier and device, so verify the policy and current update status for the precise regional and carrier variant you intend to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the model’s support documentation for your market rather than relying on a global product-page headline. Confirm the model identifier or variant on the listing, particularly when buying an imported phone, and compare it with the manufacturer’s regional support information. If the seller cannot identify the variant, you cannot confidently establish that the published commitment or delivery timing applies to that unit.

For a used device, inspect its current security-patch level before purchase where possible. This is a snapshot of what is installed, not a substitute for an end date: use both pieces of information to judge whether support is current and how much of the commitment remains.

How can I check whether a phone is repairable in practice?

Look beyond a repairability slogan or score. Find out which parts are sold, whether the battery and screen can be replaced by an owner or only by a professional, what tools and fasteners a repair requires, and whether repair instructions and software are available.

Check the parts and repair route

Start with the battery and display because each can affect whether you keep using a phone after wear or accidental damage. Establish whether the manufacturer or an authorized parts channel sells each part to end users, or whether access is restricted to professional repairers. A part listed as available is not necessarily a practical self-repair option if it is limited to a service channel, requires tools you do not have, or has no accessible instructions.

Check the repair documentation and requirements before deciding that a device is suitable for do-it-yourself work. Note the disassembly depth, fastener type, tools required and whether software is needed after a repair. If the maker’s materials do not establish who can buy the component or how it is fitted, record that as unknown rather than assuming that a replacement is straightforward.

Use the EU label and EPREL record when they apply

For a phone sold in the EU after 20 June 2025, save or photograph its energy label and open the model’s EPREL record. Compare the repairability class and index, disassembly depth, fastener and tool scores, spare-parts score, repair-information score, minimum update duration and commercial guarantee. The record presents these fields at model level, which can help distinguish a concrete repair route from a general brand claim.

Do not mistake a score or listing for proof that a particular part is available to you today. Check the part itself, its eligible buyer, delivery timing and repair instructions. Under the European Commission’s 2025 rules for covered models, key parts must be available for seven years after end of sales, and critical spare-part delivery is required within five to ten working days. The required availability does not, by itself, establish that every part is sold directly to consumers; verify whether the part is restricted to professional repairers.

Can I replace the battery, and how long should it last?

Check both the replacement route and any battery-endurance information. A phone can have long software support yet become inconvenient to use if its battery degrades and replacement is inaccessible or difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For covered EU models, the European Commission’s 2025 rules require a battery to retain at least 80% of its initial capacity after 800 charge cycles. Treat this as a regulated minimum for models in scope, not as a promise that every individual battery will deliver the same lifespan or remain at that capacity under every person’s usage and charging conditions.

Pair the cycle criterion with the repair information: can an owner replace the battery, is a professional required, and can the needed part be obtained? If a label or EPREL record is available, compare its battery and repair information at model level. If it is not, do not infer an equivalent rating from a general claim about durability.

What durability information should I compare?

Use available model-level information about drop, scratch, dust and water resistance alongside battery and repair data. These characteristics describe different risks: resistance can help with some forms of everyday exposure, but it does not remove the possibility of a damaged screen, worn battery or repair need.

For covered EU phones, the 2025 rules require information on drop, scratch, dust and water resistance to appear with the relevant product information. Where an EU energy label and EPREL record are available, use them to compare these details for the model rather than assuming that similar-looking phones have identical ratings. The supplied information does not establish a universal durability result for phones outside the rules’ scope, so treat absent information as unknown.

How do the Pixel 8 and Fairphone 5 commitments compare?

The two examples illustrate why a buyer should compare both the number of years and what the number covers. Their published commitments are not directly interchangeable: Google’s Pixel clock is anchored to first US Google Store availability, while Fairphone’s roadmap specifies Android upgrades, a security-update cadence and an end date.

Comparison point Google Pixel 8 Fairphone 5 EU baseline for covered models
Operating-system updates Seven years of OS updates, as described in Google’s policy for Pixel 8 and later phones; Pixel 8 commitment includes Android OS upgrades and Feature Drops. At least five Android version upgrades, according to Fairphone’s current support roadmap. At least five years of OS updates after the last unit is placed on the EU market, when the manufacturer provides security, corrective or functionality updates.
Security updates Seven years, under the Pixel 8 and later policy. At least eight years, with monthly updates for about three years, then bi-monthly updates from August 2026 through the stated August 2031 end of support. At least five years of OS updates under the stated qualifying conditions; the cited baseline does not establish a specific security-update cadence.
Support clock Starts when the phone first became available on the US Google Store. The roadmap gives an end of support in August 2031; a separate start trigger is not stated in the cited roadmap. Measured from placement of the last unit on the EU market.
Update delivery caveat Google says rollout can be gradual and depend on carrier and device. Not stated in the cited roadmap. The legal baseline does not establish a model’s rollout schedule or regional delivery date.
Battery and display replacement route Not stated in the cited update policy. Not stated in the cited support roadmap. For covered models, check the model’s label and EPREL record for repair information; part access can depend on whether a component is restricted to professional repairers.
Spare parts and repair documentation Not stated in the cited update policy. Not stated in the cited support roadmap. Key parts for covered models must be available for seven years after end of sales, with critical spare-part delivery within five to ten working days; verify access and repair information for the specific part.
Battery-cycle criterion Not stated in the cited update policy. Not stated in the cited support roadmap. For covered models, at least 800 charge cycles while retaining 80% of initial capacity.
Drop, scratch, dust and water information Not stated in the cited update policy. Not stated in the cited support roadmap. Information is required for covered models; compare the model-level label or EPREL record.
Commercial guarantee or warranty terms Not stated in the cited update policy. Not stated in the cited support roadmap. The EPREL record includes commercial-guarantee information; its specific terms are model-level.

“Not stated” means the cited update policy or support roadmap does not establish that repair or durability detail; it does not establish that no repair option exists. Check the relevant model-level repair information before treating an update commitment as a complete long-term-use comparison.

What trade-offs matter most when choosing?

The best fit depends on which failure would make you replace a phone sooner. A longer update term can be valuable if software support is your priority, but it does not ensure an inexpensive repair. A highly repairable model can make part replacement more practical, but it may have fewer high-end features. A legal minimum can set a floor without guaranteeing rapid updates or every new feature.

  • If security support is your priority: compare the promised end date and clock trigger, then verify the regional variant’s current patch level.
  • If you keep phones until the battery wears: compare cycle information, battery replacement access and the expected parts route.
  • If you want to repair the phone yourself: check that parts are sold to end users, and inspect tools, fasteners, instructions and software requirements.
  • If you are buying used or old stock: check the remaining support period and installed patch level, rather than relying on the original launch promise.
  • If you are buying in the EU: use the label and EPREL record when available, but verify the specific part and buyer eligibility rather than assuming every repair is direct-to-consumer.

What should I verify before paying?

Use this checklist for the exact listing and unit. If a seller or manufacturer cannot establish an item, treat it as unknown and decide whether that uncertainty is acceptable for your expected ownership period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact model and variant. Record the model name or identifier, region and carrier version; avoid applying a product-family promise to an unverified variant.
  2. Write down each update commitment. Separate OS upgrades, security updates and feature updates, and capture the stated duration and end date.
  3. Find the clock trigger. Determine whether the period begins at first availability in a named store or market, the last unit’s placement on a market, or another stated event.
  4. Check current status. For old stock or a used phone, compare its installed security-patch level with the model’s official support information.
  5. Verify delivery qualifications. Check whether carrier, device or regional rollout conditions apply to the unit you plan to buy.
  6. Trace the battery and display repair routes. Find out who can buy each part, who can replace it, and what tools, instructions or software the repair requires.
  7. Check durability and parts information. Where applicable, save the EU label and review the model’s EPREL record for the repairability fields, battery-cycle criterion and durability information.
  8. Read the warranty or commercial guarantee separately. Note the actual model-level terms rather than assuming that a repairability score or update promise describes warranty coverage.

Once these details are in hand, compare the remaining support time and repair route against the period you expect to own the phone. A device that looks best on one headline measure may not be the strongest long-term choice if the other measure you rely on is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an EU repairability label guarantee that a nearby shop can fix my phone?

No. The label and EPREL record provide model-level repair information, but they do not establish that a qualified repairer is available near you. Check local service availability separately if you would rely on professional repair.

Does a phone’s commercial guarantee mean repairs will be free?

Not necessarily. A commercial guarantee is a separate set of terms, and its duration, coverage and exclusions need to be read for the specific model. Do not treat a guarantee field or a repairability score as a statement that every repair is covered.

Can a battery still need replacement before it reaches 800 charge cycles?

Yes. The EU criterion for covered models is a regulated minimum under specified conditions, not a prediction for each owner’s battery. Actual wear and the point at which a battery becomes inconvenient can vary with use.
