Compare OpenAI and Anthropic APIs with a workload model, not a single headline rate. Keep request volume, input and output tokens, cache behavior, processing mode, context tier, geography, tool use, retries and time period constant. Then calculate each provider’s monthly bill and divide it by successful tasks rather than requests. This approach shows whether a lower token price survives your real cache-hit rate, batch mix, failure rate and compliance requirements. Anthropic’s published Claude Sonnet 4.6 rates, for example, are $3 input and $15 output per million tokens for standard global processing, versus $1.50 and $7.50 for global batch processing. OpenAI publishes separate input, output, cached-input, cache-write and processing-mode prices, plus a documented 10% uplift for eligible regional-processing and FedRAMP endpoints. The cheaper API is the one that delivers your required quality and throughput at the lowest cost per completed task.

What should I measure before comparing the two APIs?

Start with an observed workload snapshot. A price sheet is useful only after every provider is evaluated against the same traffic, token distribution and success criteria.

  • Requests: record monthly volume, daily peaks and the share of synchronous versus asynchronous jobs.
  • Tokens: capture median and p95 input and output tokens. Averages alone can hide long prompts that trigger a higher context tier or output cap.
  • Prompt composition: separate new input, cache-write tokens and cache-hit tokens. Measure hit rates from production logs instead of assuming that every repeated prefix is reused.
  • Model behavior: record the model, context window or tier, maximum output setting and any fallback model used after an error.
  • Outcome: define a successful task, then measure quality, latency, retries and abandonment. A request that times out or fails validation still consumes money.
  • Location and controls: note global processing, US-only inference, regional-processing or compliance endpoints, along with any tool, search or other per-call charges.

Use the same calendar period for both estimates. If one provider’s price list is effective on a different date, label the comparison date and plan to refresh it before committing a budget; model catalogs and tiers change frequently.

How do OpenAI and Anthropic publish their prices?

The providers expose different dimensions, so matching only the visible input and output numbers can produce a misleading result. OpenAI publishes prices per one million tokens with separate input, output, cached-input, cache-write and processing-mode tiers. It also documents a 10% uplift for eligible regional-processing and FedRAMP endpoints. That uplift applies to qualifying endpoint choices, not automatically to every request.

Anthropic’s list prices are denominated in US dollars per one million tokens and are effective May 27, 2026. Its documentation separates standard processing, US-only inference and batch-processing scopes. Scope is part of the price: a US-only or compliance-constrained route should be compared with the equivalent route on the other platform, not with a global rate chosen because it is cheaper.

Provider and scope Model or tier Input price per 1M tokens Output price per 1M tokens Price qualification
Anthropic standard global Claude Sonnet 4.6 $3.00 $15.00 List price effective 2026-05-27
Anthropic global batch Claude Sonnet 4.6 $1.50 $7.50 Batch-processing rate effective 2026-05-27

Those figures are a useful illustration of processing-mode savings, not a universal claim that one vendor is cheaper. The available data does not provide a directly comparable OpenAI model price, nor does it provide Anthropic cache-write or cache-hit rates. Obtain the current model-specific figures from each provider’s pricing documentation when you populate your worksheet.

How do I build a comparable monthly cost model?

Build one row per model, context tier, geography and processing mode. Keep the units explicit so a change from tokens to millions of tokens cannot silently multiply the result by a million.

  1. Record traffic. Enter monthly requests and, separately, the number of successful tasks you expect after retries and validation failures.
  2. Capture the token distribution. Add median and p95 input and output tokens. If prompts vary by route, create a row for each route rather than using one blended average.
  3. Split input tokens. For each row, allocate tokens to new input, cache writes and cache hits. The three categories should add up to the total input tokens sent.
  4. Choose comparable models. Match capability and context requirements, then record each model’s output limit. Do not pair a short-context, lower-priced model with a long-context workload it cannot accept.
  5. Separate processing modes. Apply standard rates to interactive traffic and batch rates only to jobs that can actually run asynchronously. Weight each rate by the measured share of traffic.
  6. Add scope adjustments. Apply regional-processing or compliance uplifts, US-only scope, tool charges and search charges to the rows where they occur.
  7. Model retries. Multiply tokens and charges for attempts that repeat a call. Track retries caused by rate limits, timeouts, schema failures and application-level quality checks separately.
  8. Calculate two outputs. Report total monthly spend and effective cost per successful task. The second number is the one to use when comparing architectures with different failure rates.

A practical worksheet has columns for provider, model, scope, mode, requests, input tokens, output tokens, cache writes, cache hits, input rate, output rate, fixed or tool charges, retries, total spend and successful tasks. Keep raw observations beside assumptions so you can replace an estimate with measured data later.

How should cached prompts be priced?

Cache economics depend on both the provider’s cache rates and the shape of your prompts. OpenAI describes prompt caching this way: “Prompt caching preserves that state for a reusable prefix: the unchanged tokens at the beginning of a prompt.” In other words, only a stable prefix can be reused; changing instructions or placing volatile text before the reusable material can reduce hits.

For every provider, divide input into three accounting buckets:

  • New input: tokens that have not been stored for reuse.
  • Cache writes: tokens written into a cache, where the provider charges a write rate or a minimum storage period.
  • Cache hits: reused prefix tokens billed at the provider’s cached-input rate, if that rate exists for the selected model and mode.

Do not infer Anthropic cache prices from the Sonnet standard or batch figures above; those figures cover input and output, while cache treatment is a separate line item. Likewise, do not assume an OpenAI cache hit is free. Put the documented cache-write and cached-input rates in separate cells and include cache expiry, minimum billable tokens or retention rules when the provider specifies them.

Run at least three cache scenarios: no reuse, your measured hit rate and a high-hit-rate case achievable after prompt restructuring. A cache can lower token spend while increasing write operations, storage duration or engineering complexity, so compare the complete monthly total and the latency impact of cache misses.

When does batch processing change the answer?

Batch processing can materially reduce token cost, but only for work that tolerates asynchronous completion. Treat it as a different service level, not as a discount you can apply to interactive requests.

For Claude Sonnet 4.6, Anthropic lists $3.00 per million input tokens and $15.00 per million output tokens for standard global processing. Its global batch rates are $1.50 input and $7.50 output per million tokens, both effective May 27, 2026. The batch figures halve both published token rates in this specific scope and model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate a blended bill by multiplying standard spend by the interactive share and batch spend by the batch share. For example, in a purely illustrative workload with 100 million input tokens and 20 million output tokens in a month, standard Claude Sonnet 4.6 usage would be (100 × $3) + (20 × $15) = $600. If every job qualified for global batch, the same token volume would be (100 × $1.50) + (20 × $7.50) = $300. A 70% standard and 30% batch mix would be ($600 × 0.70) + ($300 × 0.30) = $510, before retries or tool charges. These are arithmetic examples, not a forecast of your traffic.

Check whether batching changes ordering, maximum job size, completion windows, cancellation behavior or observability in your implementation. If a delayed result causes users to retry manually, the apparent token saving can disappear.

How do context length and output limits affect cost?

Context pricing must be compared with the longest prompts your application actually sends. A model may have a low short-context rate but a different rate for long-context requests, or it may reject a prompt that another model accepts.

  • Record the context tier used by each route, including the threshold that moves a request into long-context pricing.
  • Include system instructions, conversation history, retrieved documents, tool definitions and tool results in input-token counts.
  • Set an output cap that reflects the product requirement. A high cap can increase worst-case spend even when median responses are short.
  • Measure truncation and refusal rates. A nominally cheap model that cannot fit the required context may create extra summarization calls or fallback requests.

When comparing models with different context limits, calculate cost for the same retained history and retrieval policy. Otherwise, the cheaper token rate may simply reflect that more context was discarded before the request.

How should geography and compliance requirements enter the calculation?

Choose the processing location first, then compare rates within that constraint. Global, US-only, regional-processing and compliance endpoints can have different prices, availability and latency.

OpenAI documents a 10% uplift for eligible regional-processing and FedRAMP endpoints. Apply that uplift only to the qualifying OpenAI line items; do not spread it across global traffic. Anthropic’s published list separates standard processing from US-only inference and batch-processing scopes, so a US-only requirement should use the US-only figure rather than the global standard figure.

Record the endpoint and region in your worksheet, along with whether traffic can fail over to another geography. A failover plan can change expected cost if a regional outage sends requests to a higher-priced scope. Compliance also has operational costs—logging restrictions, retention controls and additional validation—that belong in a total-cost discussion even when they are not token charges.

How do I calculate cost per successful task?

Monthly spend alone rewards a system that generates many failed attempts. Use this two-part calculation:

  1. Monthly token and service spend: add input, output, cache-write, cached-input, batch or standard, regional, tool and search charges for every route, including retries.
  2. Effective cost: divide that total by the number of tasks that pass your quality and delivery criteria.

Suppose an application spends $1,200 in a month and records 95,000 successful tasks after 100,000 initial requests and their retries. Its effective cost is $1,200 ÷ 95,000 = $0.01263 per successful task, not $0.012 per request. Keep a separate success-rate column so a quality change is visible rather than hidden inside an averaged token figure.

Define success before testing: a valid structured response, a human-approved answer, a completed workflow or another measurable outcome. If tasks have different values, calculate cost per task class as well as a blended average; a cheap background classification job should not obscure an expensive support interaction.

What sensitivity tests reveal the real price risk?

After the base case, vary the assumptions most likely to move the bill. Present the results as ranges rather than a single precise forecast.

  • Traffic growth: model current volume, a moderate increase and a peak month.
  • Cache hit rate: compare no hits, measured hits and an engineered high-hit case. Include cache writes in every case.
  • Output expansion: increase output tokens to the p95 or to the maximum allowed by the product.
  • Retry rate: test normal operation and an incident scenario with elevated timeouts or schema failures.
  • Batch eligibility: move only the jobs that can tolerate asynchronous completion into the batch case.
  • Model mix: evaluate fallback and escalation routes separately rather than assigning every request the cheapest model.
  • Regional routing: apply the relevant uplift or US-only rate when compliance policy changes.

Identify the assumption with the largest dollar impact. That is where instrumentation and a small representative evaluation will save more money than negotiating a tiny change in a headline token rate.

How can I compare quality, latency and reliability when prices are close?

Published pricing pages do not provide a controlled cross-vendor benchmark of quality, latency or reliability. Make those measurements with representative prompts and the same success rubric before choosing a provider.

Build a test set that includes short and long contexts, tool calls, structured outputs, safety-sensitive cases and the failure modes seen in production. Run each candidate under the intended geography and processing mode. Record time to first token, total completion time, timeout rate, schema-valid rate, human or automated quality score and the number of retries required to finish a task.

Convert the results into operational cost. If one model needs a second call to repair malformed JSON, include both calls. If a slower model lets you use batch mode without affecting users, compare its batch cost and completion window with the interactive alternative. Keep quality scores visible beside dollars; a lower bill is not a saving if it increases review labor or missed tasks.

Which provider is cheaper for my token mix?

There is no honest universal winner without your token mix, cache behavior, processing split and endpoint requirements. The known Anthropic Sonnet 4.6 example shows that global batch can cost half the standard global token rates, while OpenAI’s pricing structure may reward cached prefixes or a different model choice; the correct result depends on the rates for the exact models and scopes you select.

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Eliminate models that cannot meet your context, output or quality requirements.
  2. For the remaining models, calculate standard, batch and mixed-mode totals with measured token distributions.
  3. Add cache, geography, tool and retry charges rather than treating them as optional extras.
  4. Rank candidates by cost per successful task, then review latency, reliability and compliance fit.
  5. Recheck the published price pages and model availability immediately before launch and at each budget review.

The winning configuration is the one that meets the workload’s outcome and policy requirements at the lowest sustainable effective cost—not the one with the lowest isolated input rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should API pricing comparisons be updated?

Refresh the worksheet whenever a model, endpoint, cache policy or processing tier changes, and at least once per budget cycle. Keep the effective date beside every rate so an old estimate cannot be mistaken for a current quote.

Should I use average or p95 tokens in the budget?

Use both: the average estimates routine spend, while p95 exposes capacity and worst-case cost for long prompts or verbose outputs. Budget a separate stress case for traffic spikes instead of hiding them inside one blended average.

How do retries alter a provider comparison?

Retries multiply token and tool charges and can erase a small headline-price advantage. Track retry causes separately, because fixing schema validation or timeout handling may reduce cost more than changing vendors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a batch discount apply to interactive requests?

Only if the provider’s batch service accepts that workload and your product can tolerate its completion behavior. Treat asynchronous eligibility, cancellation and user-visible delay as requirements before assigning any traffic the batch rate.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
