There is no universally cheapest, fastest, or smartest LLM provider. The defensible choice comes from measuring the models and endpoints against your own workload, then weighting effective cost, tail latency, quality, reliability, and governance according to what your product needs. A useful comparison normalizes model class, prompt and completion tokens, context size, region, concurrency, service tier, caching, tool calls, and retries. It reports both cost per completed request and cost per successful task, latency percentiles rather than a single average, and quality scores from a fixed, versioned test set.
What is the right way to compare LLM providers?
Build a workload-specific scorecard instead of copying a public leaderboard. Select representative tasks, freeze the variables that affect results, run repeated trials under realistic load, and publish the raw measurements before calculating a weighted score. This prevents a low token rate from hiding poor completion quality or a good median response time from hiding severe tail latency.

A weighted total can help make a decision, but it should never replace the underlying measurements.
Which variables must be identical before a provider comparison?
Most apparent provider differences are confounded by different prompts, token mixes, regions, or service tiers. Freeze the following variables for every endpoint, and record them with each test run.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Model identity: use exact model IDs and versions, not labels such as “large” or “fast.” Record release dates and whether an endpoint is a provider-hosted model or a managed deployment.
- Prompt and output limits: keep system instructions, user inputs, tool definitions, temperature (or the closest equivalent), top-p settings, stop conditions, and maximum output tokens constant.
- Context: use the same document set, ordering, truncation policy, and context-window assumptions. A model that accepts a larger context may incur a different cost and latency profile.
- Region and processing mode: test comparable geographic endpoints and note residency or regional-processing premiums. Do not mix a local endpoint with a cross-region route.
- Concurrency: run both a low-concurrency interactive test and a load test that reflects production. Rate limits and queueing can dominate p95 and p99 latency.
- Cache state: distinguish cold requests, warm prefix caches, and cache writes. A cached prompt is not equivalent to a first-time prompt.
- Tools and retries: hold tool definitions and tool-call opportunities constant. Log every retry, timeout, moderation intervention, and fallback; otherwise a provider that fails more often can look artificially cheap.
- Software path: record SDK version, API version, streaming setting, HTTP client, timeout, and connection reuse. These details can change first-chunk and total-response measurements.
How do I calculate total LLM cost per request?
Start with actual usage, not the maximum context or output allowance. For each request, calculate input-token cost and output-token cost from the provider’s published rates, then add every charge required to produce a usable result.
Base request cost = (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExtend that equation with cache writes and reads, storage, grounding or search calls, map lookups, tool executions, moderation, image or audio units, retries, orchestration, egress, and any provisioned capacity. Keep one line item per charge so a pricing change can be audited without rerunning the whole analysis.
Use actual input and output distributions
Measure the token distribution for your workload rather than substituting one average. Report at least median and high-percentile input and output tokens, because a small number of long prompts can dominate monthly spend. Separate fixed system-prefix tokens from variable user content when a provider offers prefix caching.
Include unsuccessful attempts
Cost per request hides failures. Compute cost per successful task as total spend for all attempts divided by the number of tasks that meet your acceptance rubric. Include retries and fallback calls in the numerator. If a response is rejected for schema errors or factual failures, its tokens still cost money.
Account for processing modes and commitments
Provider pricing pages expose different economics for interactive, asynchronous, cached, and committed capacity. OpenAI’s current pricing documentation lists separate input, output, cached-input, cache-write, and processing-mode rates per million tokens; eligible regional-processing endpoints for models released on or after March 5, 2026 carry a 10% uplift. Treat that uplift as conditional on the exact model and endpoint, not as a universal surcharge.

Anthropic’s pricing documentation states that its Batch API gives a 50% discount on both input and output tokens for asynchronous large-volume processing. Google documents Standard, Flex, Priority, Batch, and caching modes; the operational trade-offs are summarized below. Amazon Bedrock separates on-demand input and output rates and bills provisioned throughput as model units by the hour and month.
| Mode or mechanism | Documented economics | Latency or operational implication |
|---|---|---|
| Google Standard | Full price | Seconds-to-minutes latency target |
| Google Flex | 50% discount | 1–15 minute target; unsuitable for interactive requests |
| Google Priority | 75% to 100% more than Standard | Seconds-level target for workloads that pay for faster service |
| Google Batch | 50% discount | May take up to 24 hours |
| Google context caching | 90% discount before prorated storage charges | Faster time to first token after the cache is usable; storage is billed separately |
| Anthropic Batch API | 50% discount on input and output tokens | Asynchronous processing; measure completion delay separately from interactive latency |
| OpenAI regional processing | 10% uplift for eligible models released on or after March 5, 2026 | Regional-processing eligibility depends on model and endpoint |
| Amazon Bedrock on-demand | Input and output token rates are separate | Usage-priced requests; region and selected model determine the rate |
| Amazon Bedrock provisioned throughput | Model units billed by the hour and month | Predictable capacity, but commitment cost remains during idle periods |
Google’s Gemini pricing documentation also separates free, paid, and enterprise tiers, documents context caching, and lists separate charges for grounding with Google Search and Maps. Add those grounding calls to the request cost whenever your benchmark enables them.
Worked cost check
Amazon Web Services gives a worked Bedrock example in which 11,000 input tokens and 4,000 output tokens total $0.184 under the stated region and model assumptions. Use it as a sanity check for unit conversion, not as a general Bedrock price: your model, region, and rates may differ.
How should I measure LLM latency?
Measure the user-visible timeline, not just provider-reported processing time. For streaming APIs, record time to first token or first chunk, inter-token speed, and total response time. For non-streaming APIs, record request start to complete response, while still capturing queue and connection setup if they affect the user.

Report percentiles, not one average
Publish p50, p95, and p99 for first-chunk latency and total response time. The median describes a typical request; p95 and p99 reveal the tail that drives timeouts, abandoned sessions, and capacity planning. Include timeout and error rates alongside these percentiles. A provider with a fast median but a high p99 may require more aggressive fallbacks or longer client timeouts.
Separate model speed from queueing
Run a low-concurrency baseline to estimate intrinsic service speed, then increase concurrency until you reach the load expected in production. Plot latency against concurrent requests and token output length. Record rate-limit responses and backoff delays rather than silently removing those trials.

Make streaming comparisons fair
Use the same streaming setting and count the first non-empty chunk consistently. Some endpoints emit metadata before text; define whether that counts and apply the rule to every provider. Report median output tokens per second (or inter-token time) for responses that actually complete, plus a separate completion rate.
How do I test output quality fairly?
Quality is task-specific. A general intelligence ranking cannot tell you which model extracts fields correctly from your documents or follows your application’s schema. Build a fixed, versioned test set of 5–20 representative tasks at minimum, expanding it when your product has several distinct workloads.

- Generation: evaluate factual support, style constraints, and usefulness against a defined brief.
- Extraction: check every required field, normalization rule, and handling of missing values.
- Classification: report precision, recall, and confusion by important classes rather than one aggregate accuracy.
- Coding: run tests or static checks on generated code; do not grade code by appearance alone.
- Reasoning: use problems with verifiable answers and score the final result, not an unverifiable chain of thought.
- Long-context work: vary document length and the location of relevant evidence to expose retrieval and position effects.
Freeze the rubric
Score factual correctness, completeness, instruction following, schema validity, safety or refusal behavior, and human preference where automated checks are insufficient. Keep examples, pass thresholds, and adjudication rules unchanged across providers. Store the exact prompt, model ID, response, tool trace, token counts, and evaluator result so a later model update can be compared with the same baseline.
Use independent checks for factual tasks
When answers depend on a supplied source, verify claims against that source rather than rewarding fluent wording. For structured output, parse the response and count invalid JSON, missing keys, wrong types, and extra text. A response that reads well but cannot enter your database is a failed task.
What should a provider comparison scorecard contain?
Show raw values first. A weighted score is useful only after readers can see what was measured and under which conditions.
| Axis | Measurements to publish | Important qualifiers |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Input and output rates; median and p95 tokens; cost per request; cost per successful task; monthly scenario | Cache state, batch or priority mode, grounding, retries, storage, region, and commitments |
| Latency | First token/chunk p50/p95/p99; inter-token speed; total response p50/p95/p99 | Streaming setting, output length, concurrency, queueing, timeout policy |
| Quality | Task-level pass rate and rubric subscores | Versioned test set, evaluator method, sample size, and confidence intervals where practical |
| Reliability | Timeouts, HTTP errors, rate limits, retries, malformed outputs, successful-task rate | Client retry policy and fallback behavior |
| Context | Supported context limit and observed quality at each tested length | Exact model version; limits can differ by endpoint or tier |
| Data and governance | Retention and training-use terms, residency options, compliance scope | Verify the contract and region you will actually use |
| Operations | Quota, batching, caching, tooling, observability, and deployment choices | Document constraints that could block production rollout |
Artificial Analysis currently compares more than 500 endpoints and exposes cost per task, an intelligence index, median tokens per second, median first-chunk latency, total response time, context window, and provider/model identity. It is useful for discovering candidates and forming hypotheses, but your own controlled tests should decide the final ranking because public workloads and traffic conditions may not match yours.

How do I run a reproducible comparison?
- Define the decision. Write the product constraint in measurable terms, such as “at least 97% valid structured outputs, p95 first token under 800 ms, and the lowest cost per successful task.”
- Select candidates. Choose comparable model classes and record exact IDs, endpoint regions, available tiers, context limits, and pricing dates.
- Assemble the test set. Sample real, de-identified tasks across generation, extraction, classification, coding, reasoning, and long-context work as applicable. Keep a hidden holdout set to detect tuning to the benchmark.
- Freeze requests. Store system prompts, templates, tool schemas, generation controls, maximum output tokens, timeout, and retry settings in version control.
- Warm and cold paths. Run separate trials for uncached requests, cache writes, and cache hits when a provider supports them. Do not combine their costs or latency distributions.
- Run repeated trials. Use enough repetitions to stabilize p95 and p99, and test both realistic concurrency and a low-load baseline. Randomize provider order to reduce time-of-day bias.
- Capture complete telemetry. Log timestamps for request start, first chunk, every chunk if needed, completion, retries, errors, token counts, cache events, tool calls, and evaluator outcomes.
- Calculate economics. Apply the rate card active on the test date to actual tokens and all ancillary charges. Produce both per-request and per-successful-task figures, then model monthly volume scenarios.
- Evaluate quality. Run deterministic checks first, followed by blinded human review for qualities that automation cannot judge. Keep the rubric and adjudication process fixed.
- Publish raw and weighted results. Explain weights, thresholds, exclusions, and uncertainty. Re-run when a model version, region, rate card, contract, or workload changes.
Is OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, or Bedrock better for my workload?
No provider wins for every workload. Compare the exact endpoint and operating mode you would deploy, then choose according to the constraint that can actually break your product.
When cost dominates
Test realistic input/output mixes and cache hit rates. Asynchronous jobs may benefit from documented batch discounts, while a low-latency application may spend more for priority service. Include storage, grounding, retries, and idle provisioned capacity before declaring a winner.
When latency dominates
Prioritize first-token p95 for conversational interfaces and total completion p95 for blocking workflows. Check tail behavior at production concurrency; a fast laboratory result is not enough if quotas create queueing.
When quality dominates
Use acceptance tests tied to business risk. A model that is slightly more expensive but avoids manual review or failed downstream actions can have a lower cost per successful task.
Recommended Free Tools
When governance dominates
Verify retention, training-use policy, regional processing, compliance scope, and contractual controls for the selected region and plan. Do not infer these terms from a model’s public reputation or from another provider’s defaults.
Should I use a direct API or Amazon Bedrock?
A direct provider API can offer the newest model features and a simpler path to provider-specific controls. A managed marketplace layer can consolidate identity, billing, regional deployment, and access to multiple model families, but it adds another rate card, quota boundary, and operational dependency.
Best Value
Measure both paths if you are deciding between them. Hold the model, region, prompt, and client behavior constant, then compare added network hops, token accounting, logging, data controls, rate limits, and support obligations. For Bedrock specifically, include the distinction between on-demand token billing and provisioned-throughput model-unit charges in the scenario model.
What common mistakes invalidate an LLM comparison?
- Comparing different model classes: a small fast model versus a frontier reasoning model is a product choice, not a like-for-like price test.
- Using list price alone: input/output mix, cache hits, batch eligibility, retries, and failed tasks can reverse the ranking.
- Reporting only averages: averages hide the p95 and p99 delays users experience during bursts.
- Changing prompts per provider: provider-specific prompt tuning may be useful in production, but disclose it and run a separate apples-to-apples test.
- Ignoring output length: longer answers cost more and take longer; cap or normalize output requirements.
- Testing one example per task: one lucky prompt cannot estimate quality or variance. Use a versioned set and a holdout.
- Dropping failures: exclude neither timeouts nor malformed outputs from the denominator. They are part of reliability and cost per success.
- Mixing cache states: cold and cached requests have different rates and latency distributions.
- Overlooking geography: regional availability and processing premiums can alter both price and compliance suitability.
- Treating a public leaderboard as a verdict: external measurements are directional; your data and acceptance criteria are decisive.
How should I turn measurements into a decision?
Set hard gates before weighting. For example, reject any endpoint below your minimum valid-output rate or above your maximum p95 latency, then rank the survivors by cost per successful task. This prevents a very cheap but unusable model from winning a mathematical average.
For the remaining candidates, publish a transparent weighted score such as 40% quality, 30% cost per successful task, 20% p95 latency, and 10% reliability—but change those weights to match your product. A call-center assistant may weight first-token latency and refusal behavior heavily; overnight document processing may favor batch economics and throughput. Revisit the weights when traffic, risk, or user expectations change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many requests do I need for a reliable LLM benchmark?
There is no universal sample count because variance differs by task and traffic pattern. Use repeated trials until p95 and p99 stabilize for each task class, and report the number of completed and failed attempts so readers can judge uncertainty.
Should I benchmark temperature at zero only?
Temperature zero can improve repeatability, but it may not represent a creative or exploratory product. Benchmark the generation settings you will actually ship, and run a separate deterministic pass when reproducibility is a requirement.
How do cache writes affect break-even volume?
A cache can reduce repeated prefix-token charges while adding write and storage costs. Calculate the break-even point from your observed prefix length, hit rate, retention period, and request frequency instead of assuming that every request will hit the cache.
What does a quality tie mean when models make different mistakes?
Inspect error severity and overlap, not just aggregate scores. Two models with the same pass rate may differ sharply in safety-critical failures, manual-review burden, or errors concentrated in a particular customer segment.
