The best cloud security platform is not the one with the longest feature list. Choose the product that covers your actual cloud services and workloads, detects and can contain attacks while they run, and fits your identity, development, operations and incident-response tools with acceptable permissions and cost. Compare those three dimensions separately—coverage, runtime protection and integration—then validate the scores in a proof of concept using your own accounts and workloads. A platform that only checks configuration or scans container images cannot be treated as equivalent to one that observes live processes, correlates exposure with identity and vulnerability, and supports response actions.

What do cloud security platforms actually combine?

Cloud security products increasingly use the term cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) for a set of controls that spans the software life cycle, from code and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) through deployed workloads and runtime response. The label is useful only if you inspect the individual capabilities behind it.

  • Cloud security posture management (CSPM) checks cloud configuration, compliance settings and exposure.
  • Cloud workload protection platform (CWPP) protects virtual machines (VMs), containers and other running workloads against vulnerabilities and attacks.
  • Kubernetes security posture management (KSPM) evaluates clusters, nodes, workloads and Kubernetes settings.
  • Cloud infrastructure entitlement management (CIEM) analyzes identities, permissions and excessive privilege.
  • Data security posture management (DSPM) maps sensitive data, access and risky data stores.
  • Vulnerability management identifies exploitable software and cloud assets.
  • Application, code and IaC scanning finds defects before deployment in source, dependencies, container images, registries and templates.
  • Cloud detection and response adds detections, investigation context and actions after suspicious activity begins.

A CNAPP is valuable when it correlates these signals. For example, a public storage bucket, an overprivileged workload identity and a vulnerable image should be presented as one attack path when they can combine into a realistic breach—not as three unrelated dashboard findings. Tenable describes this cross-layer correlation across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud (GCP), including identity, workload, configuration, data and runtime context.

How should you compare cloud and service coverage?

Start with an inventory of the exact providers, regions, accounts and managed services you operate. Record support per service family rather than accepting a single “multicloud” check mark.

Coverage area Questions to ask Evidence to request
Cloud providers Are AWS, Azure and GCP supported in the editions you can buy? Are your commercial, sovereign and government-cloud regions included? Current service matrix, region list and release dates for newly added services.
Managed services Are the databases, object stores, queues, serverless services, API gateways and managed Kubernetes products you use evaluated? Named resource types, supported API versions and examples of findings for each service.
Workloads Are VMs, containers, Kubernetes control planes and nodes, serverless functions and host operating systems covered? Deployment diagrams showing agentless and agent-based options, sensor requirements and blind spots.
Security domains Does the package include CSPM, CWPP, KSPM, CIEM, DSPM, vulnerability, code and IaC scanning, and cloud detection and response? Plan-by-plan feature matrix; mark features that require separate licenses or add-ons.
Compliance Which benchmarks and regulations are mapped, and can controls be customized? Sample report, control identifiers, exception workflow and evidence-retention period.

Check whether collection is agentless, agent-based or both. Agentless API scans are quick to deploy and avoid software on hosts, but they cannot see every process or kernel event. Agents or sensors provide deeper workload telemetry and response, at the cost of deployment, upgrades, permissions and possible performance impact. Confirm data residency, encrypted transport, tenant isolation and whether a sensor can operate in disconnected or restricted regions.

Elastic documents both agentless and agent-based CSPM for AWS, GCP and Azure, with evaluations documented as running every 24 hours. That schedule may be adequate for posture drift but is not a substitute for live runtime monitoring or event-driven detection. Ask how quickly a newly created resource appears, when a corrected finding closes, and whether urgent changes can trigger an on-demand scan.

How do you evaluate runtime protection?

Runtime protection answers what happens after deployment. Score detection, prevention and response for every workload type, and require a clear path from an alert to the vulnerable image, misconfiguration, identity or attack path that enabled it.

Runtime dimension What to verify
Workload breadth VMs, containers, Kubernetes nodes and pods, serverless functions, hosts and managed services relevant to your estate.
Telemetry Process launches, file and network activity, identity use, container escapes, Kubernetes audit events and cloud-control-plane actions.
Detection Behavioral analytics in addition to signatures; exploit, malware, credential-abuse and anomalous-identity detections; tuning controls that reduce noise.
Prevention Policy enforcement, blocking, admission controls, isolation or kill actions, with a documented fail-open or fail-closed behavior.
Response Quarantine, disable credentials, stop a workload, open a ticket, run a playbook or send an enriched event to a security orchestration system.
Context Links from a runtime alert to image digest, package vulnerability, exposed resource, identity entitlement, owner and attack path.
Linux visibility Whether eBPF or an equivalent kernel-observation method is used, what kernel versions are supported and what overhead or blind spots exist.

OWASP identifies eBPF as a modern way to observe Linux-kernel activity for runtime protection. Treat it as an implementation detail to validate, not a guarantee of quality: ask what events are collected, how they are filtered, and whether the sensor works on your managed Kubernetes and host images.

A platform that scans images or configuration but never observes live processes is not equivalent to one that can detect and contain an active attack. In a proof of concept, include a privileged container, an exposed storage resource, a deliberately vulnerable image and a serverless function. Obtain written approval, use nonproduction data and define the expected alert and rollback action before creating each condition.

Tenable’s 2025 Cloud Security Risk Report names a “toxic cloud trilogy”: 29% of organizations still face publicly exposed workloads that are critically vulnerable and highly privileged. The figure is a finding from that report, not a universal measurement of every environment; use it to justify testing the interaction among exposure, vulnerability and privilege rather than counting isolated checks.

Which integrations matter in day-to-day operations?

Evaluate integrations in the order an incident and a software change move through your organization. A connector that merely exports a finding is less useful than one that preserves asset, identity and ownership context and can take a controlled action.

Integration layer Questions for the vendor and your administrators
Cloud accounts and APIs How are accounts enrolled? Which read and write permissions are requested? Are organization-level roles, private endpoints, rate limits and API retries supported?
Identity providers and entitlement systems Can the platform map users, groups, service principals and workload identities across clouds? Does it show effective privilege, not only attached policies?
CI/CD and IaC Can scans run on pull requests and pipeline stages? Are secrets, dependencies, images and Terraform or other templates covered? Can a policy block deployment with an explainable result?
Kubernetes and registries Are clusters, admission controllers, nodes and image registries integrated? Is the image digest retained when an alert reaches operations?
SIEM and SOAR What is event latency and schema stability? Are deduplication, severity, attack-path context and bidirectional response actions supported?
Ticketing and chat Can ownership, service, due date and evidence be synchronized? Are updates and closures returned to the platform without creating duplicate tickets?
Asset and vulnerability systems Can findings be reconciled with an existing inventory and scanner? Are identifiers, package versions, cloud resource IDs and exceptions preserved?
Endpoint and network security Can an alert pivot to host, firewall, proxy or endpoint telemetry, and can a response action be coordinated without conflicting policies?

Measure setup time, permissions, event latency, API quotas, failure handling and the quality of exported context. Ask for a sample event and verify that a responder can identify the affected account, resource, identity, owner and recommended action without opening several unrelated consoles.

Microsoft states that Defender for Cloud provides native CSPM for Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, threat protection across those platforms, and integration with the Defender XDR portal and Microsoft Security ecosystem. FortiCNAPP is documented as integrating with the Fortinet Security Fabric. Tenable emphasizes CI/CD integration and correlation across security layers. These are vendor descriptions, so validate the connectors, licensing and response permissions in your own tenant.

How do you build a weighted comparison scorecard?

Use a weighted scorecard that reflects business risk, not a universal ranking. Give each criterion a score such as 0 (absent), 1 (partial), 2 (meets requirements) or 3 (strong evidence), record the source and test date, then multiply by your chosen weight. The percentages below are an illustrative starting point; change them when your threat model or operating model differs.

Shift-left controls 10% IaC, source, dependency, image, registry and CI/CD scans before deployment.
Integration fit 10% Clouds, identity provider, SIEM/SOAR, ticketing, registries and existing security stack.
Operations 5% Permissions, agents, sensors, data residency, APIs, upgrades and response workflows.
Commercial fit 5% Included features, plan boundaries, usage meter, retention and support terms.

Do not award a high score for a capability that exists only in a roadmap or a demo tenant. Record edition, region, date, prerequisites and whether the function is generally available. Keep separate scores for prevention and visibility: a product may detect an event but lack a safe blocking action, or offer blocking only for selected workload types.

How should you run a proof of concept?

A short, controlled proof of concept (PoC) should test your highest-risk paths and operational workload rather than reproduce a vendor slide deck.

  1. Define scope and success criteria. Select representative AWS, Azure and/or GCP accounts, regions, clusters, VM images, registries and serverless functions. Write expected findings, maximum acceptable alert latency, required context and approved response actions.
  2. Inventory permissions and data flow. Review every role, API scope, sensor privilege, egress destination, retention period and data-residency setting. Start read-only where possible, then enable a narrowly scoped response role for one test account.
  3. Establish a clean baseline. Capture existing vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, identities, owners and ticket queues so you can distinguish newly discovered issues from duplicates.
  4. Exercise posture and shift-left controls. Introduce a known IaC error, public storage exposure, excessive entitlement and vulnerable package in a disposable branch or account. Check finding accuracy, policy explanations, pull-request feedback and deployment-gate behavior.
  5. Exercise runtime detection. Use the approved privileged container, vulnerable image and serverless test. Generate benign simulations of suspicious process, network and identity behavior; record detection time, enrichment, false positives and sensor overhead.
  6. Test response and recovery. Trigger ticket creation, SIEM/SOAR forwarding, credential disablement, workload isolation or policy blocking only where approved. Verify rollback, audit logs, ownership updates and behavior when an API call fails.
  7. Test scale and failure modes. Add accounts, clusters and high-volume logs until you reach a realistic load. Observe API throttling, queue delay, duplicate events, regional outages, sensor upgrades and scan backlogs.
  8. Score with evidence. Attach screenshots, exported events, timestamps, permission reviews and operator notes to each score. Mark unsupported services and manual workarounds explicitly instead of averaging them away.

What do the leading platform profiles show?

The following profiles describe positioning and documented capabilities, not independent performance rankings. Feature availability and packaging can change, so verify the current plan matrix, supported services and integration documentation before purchase.

Microsoft Defender for Cloud

Microsoft positions Defender for Cloud as a CNAPP with CSPM, CWPP, DevSecOps and multicloud coverage. Its documented protection plans include servers, containers, resource management, App Service and other workload types, with integration into the Defender XDR portal and broader Microsoft Security ecosystem. It is a logical shortlist candidate when your operations already use Microsoft identity, endpoint, SIEM or XDR workflows. Confirm which AWS and GCP protections, connectors and response actions are included in the selected plan rather than assuming parity with Azure.

Tenable Cloud Security

Tenable emphasizes exposure-path prioritization and correlation of configuration, identity, data and runtime behavior across AWS, Azure and GCP. Its materials also highlight CI/CD integration and cross-layer context. During evaluation, test whether the attack-path view reflects your identities, owners, vulnerabilities and compensating controls, and determine which runtime sensors and response functions are licensed.

Elastic CSPM

Elastic documents agentless and agent-based CSPM for AWS, GCP and Azure, with CIS-aligned evaluation and a 24-hour evaluation cycle. This can suit teams that already operate Elastic for search, analytics or security workflows and want posture findings in that environment. A daily posture cycle should be measured separately from runtime detection: ask what produces near-real-time alerts, what requires an agent and how quickly a corrected configuration is reflected.

FortiCNAPP

FortiCNAPP is described as combining CSPM, KSPM, CIEM, CWPP, application and IaC security, runtime detection and compliance mapping, with Fortinet Security Fabric integration. It may fit organizations standardizing on that fabric for network and security controls. Verify cloud-provider depth, Kubernetes versions, sensor deployment, API permissions and whether the response actions you need are available in your geographic region and plan.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do multicloud, region and deployment details change the decision?

“Multicloud” does not mean identical coverage everywhere. For each provider, document account or subscription enrollment, organization hierarchy, private connectivity, supported regions, government-cloud availability, API endpoints, data residency and local support. A feature available in a commercial region may be absent or delayed in a regulated environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare onboarding models as well. Organization-level read roles can discover resources quickly but may be unacceptable to a least-privilege team; per-account roles reduce blast radius but increase administration. Agentless discovery lowers deployment friction, while agents and eBPF sensors improve runtime visibility but add lifecycle work. Include upgrade ownership, kernel and operating-system compatibility, proxy requirements and behavior during sensor outage in your operational score.

How should plans, usage and operating effort affect cost?

Cloud security pricing is often split by protected resource, workload, data volume, scan frequency, user, connector or retention. A low entry price can exclude runtime prevention, CI/CD gates, advanced identity analytics, government regions or response actions. Request a bill of materials for your measured inventory and a second estimate for growth, not just a per-feature list.

  • Separate included CSPM checks from paid CWPP, KSPM, CIEM, DSPM, runtime and response functions.
  • Ask whether development scans, registry images, ephemeral workloads and inactive assets count toward usage.
  • Price storage and retention for raw telemetry, findings, audit logs and exported events.
  • Include engineering time for role design, sensor rollout, policy tuning, exception review and ticket integration.
  • Confirm support tiers, implementation services, renewal terms and what happens when an account exceeds its allowance.

Do not compare a vendor’s promotional or sample estimate with a recurring production bill. Tie every commercial assumption to the edition, region, resource count and measurement period in your scorecard.

What comparison mistakes should you avoid?

  • Counting checks instead of coverage. Ten thousand posture rules do not help if your managed database, serverless runtime or government region is unsupported.
  • Calling image scanning runtime protection. Image and IaC findings occur before deployment; they do not show what a running process is doing.
  • Accepting “integrates with” without testing. A logo may represent one-way export, a partner connector or a separately licensed module. Verify permissions, latency and bidirectional actions.
  • Ignoring identity context. A critical vulnerability is more urgent when an exposed workload has a highly privileged identity; require effective-entitlement analysis.
  • Testing only a clean demo account. Include inherited policies, exceptions, noisy logs, duplicate assets, ephemeral workloads and failed API calls.
  • Mixing editions and regions. Record plan, cloud, region and date for every score so an apparent feature gap is not a packaging mismatch—or vice versa.
  • Automating blocking too early. Start with alerts and approvals, tune false positives, then enable narrowly scoped prevention with a rollback path.
  • Forgetting ownership. Findings without service owner, identity, resource ID and due-date context become another queue that security must triage manually.

Which platform profile fits which environment?

Use your scorecard rather than a universal winner. A Microsoft-centered security operation may value Defender for Cloud’s XDR and Microsoft Security integration; a team prioritizing exposure-path analysis across three major clouds may investigate Tenable Cloud Security; an Elastic deployment may favor Elastic CSPM’s agentless and agent-based posture options; and a Fortinet-heavy network may benefit from FortiCNAPP’s Security Fabric connection. Those are starting hypotheses, not substitutes for testing service coverage, runtime depth, permissions, latency and plan boundaries in your environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The decision is defensible when another administrator can reproduce the scores, see the evidence and understand the trade-offs. Revisit the comparison after major cloud-service launches, architecture changes, new regulations or a material incident; coverage and packaging are moving targets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one CNAPP replace every cloud-native security tool?

Usually not immediately. Cloud-provider controls, endpoint agents, identity governance, data-loss prevention and specialized application scanners may still provide unique telemetry or response; map overlaps and keep the tool that supplies required evidence or control until the replacement is proven.

How often should cloud posture evaluations run?

The right interval follows change velocity and risk. Daily evaluation can detect drift in many environments, but internet-facing or highly dynamic resources may need event-driven checks or on-demand scans, while runtime detections should operate continuously.

What permissions should a cloud security PoC receive?

Begin with documented read-only roles covering inventory, configuration, identity and logs. Add narrowly scoped write permissions only for an approved test account, record every action, and verify that disabling the connector or sensor immediately removes response authority.

Do agentless scans reveal attacks inside a running container?

No. API-based posture collection can identify configuration and resource relationships but generally cannot observe process, kernel or network behavior inside the workload; that visibility requires an appropriate runtime sensor or equivalent telemetry.
